new zine i made on a whim because i got annoyed once again

"can you even breathe?" no i can't, actually. my body functions without air or oxygen. it's magic. i'm just build different.

yes, i can breathe in a mask. they filter the air to keep me and others safe from covid + other viruses. ideally, I would workout without a mask. but i roller skate indoors, around a lot of people. maybe if we were all making the safer choice to mask in closed and crowded spaces, we could consider it safe-ish to unmask for indoors sports, but we're not even close.

"i could neveeeeeeer" i know! i haven't seen you try! :)

"omg are you sick? you better not get me sick!" says the person without a mask?? hello?? how do you know for sure you're not sick?

"oh you're not? why are you wearing this then?" because i would like to... keep not being sick

helmet, gloves, kneepads: good! safe! smart! mandatory even

high quality mask: unnecessary. why? don't care

the risky sport enjoyer's logic about protective gear meant to keep your body and health safe

advice break: i find that duckbill style masks are easier to breathe in. they touch my face less so they are more comfortable to sweat in.

i personally can genuinely breathe just as good with my mask on. but even if it did bother me a little, 1) it is a small discomfort compared to getting sick or getting someone else sick, 2) it's my choice and none of your business. why are people so bothered?

constant questioning

isolation

people ignoring me

people only talking to me about my mask and then getting defensive why i answer questions they asked

nobody else making any effort to keep us safe...

this makes it hard to participate in sports while masking, sometimes. not the mask itself.

some people do find it difficult to breathe in a mask during physical exercise. if everyone else was consistently masking in other contexts (parties, shipping, on the bus...) then there would be less risks to spread viruses and these people could unmask in the gym, if clean air (using filters and purifiers) was a priority... but not enough people care.

I was really excited to find some zines in French. It was the second language of my home growing up and I while I don't speak or write it well, I miss getting to read/think in it.

July is Zine Month so consider getting a head start and supporting some of these creators by printing out their beautiful zines!

First zine trade and some really awsome zines!

I have no idea how to make a zine review, but first I want to thank Axl for trading zines with me, they are so cool and adorable, I will try to write a little bit about every each one of them.

SOCIAL IMPOSTOR - It's intersting how our brains like to make random thoughts about ourselves. I like the use of colored pencils and the way it was printed gives a nice tactile feel to it. I think it has individual highlights and markings made with the coloring pencils, but I am not sure.

SEASONS OF PORTLAND - I don't want to spoil this one because it has a whole mood from the idea of time passing and the changing seasons to the memories and life that comes with it. Not sure if I can be as vague as I was but I almost cried when I read it and it's a really lovely zine.

I CAN FEEL MY NAILS - If I can describe this zine in a word that will be "abstract", but in the best way. I also feel my nails and when I don't wear nail polish it's like a crime against my personality. It's also a mood based zine that I don't want to spoil.

THE PEOPLE PLEASER - This zine also hit me, as a fellow people pleaser I still struggle with the idea that I should give some of my time and my energy to myself because we also deserve to say yes and show that side of the brain that always wants everyone to be happy that we should be happy first so we can help anyone else. This zine has two sides with like two faces of the same coin, if you will. I love the drawing on the cover (/covers but the second one stays secret untill you read the zine lol) it's really pretty and it looks amazing and it gives a nice contrast with the realistic-ish side of the cover and the doodly little ones from inside the zine.

~~~~~ *** ~~~~~ For the two french ones I had in plan to read them a couple of times because, turns out, my french level is not as high as I thought. Still super happy to have them (thank you Axl, you rock).

Changer de taf has some things that do not apply to my country and I might not understand without a good search in that area, but most of the things mentioned in the zine are about work struggles like dumb salaries, the fact that the employer asks for experience for entry-level jobs as well which is silly. (It's been a while since I've read the zine with a clean mind and I am sorry if I said stuff that are remotely not in the zine, I am really sorry about that). - i will totally come back to add or edit this part because I want to make sure I didn't said random stuff about it. Still highly recommned it, even as someone who struggles a little to read french as the a third language (my forth language I know is even worse so at least I know I am not that bad at french lol).

SELF CARE D'HIVER totally inspired me to just chill for a while, lay back and just enjoy life and be an actor in my life and let things happen while I sit with legs up on the desk and take a sip from a warm tea or my favorile hot chocolate. That's a thing I always forget when I get too overwhelmed and this zine (which stayed on my desk for a long while with Changer the taf) with a little tiny glimpse towards it while stressing out at work and life in general, it made me just get back into that mindset of "I don't feel like getting stressed or anxious today" and that's a lovely reminder that everyone needs from time to time. Really not a fan of winter, but this zine has a little bit of the winter magic within the pages and that's really wonderfull and a zine I'll be adressing to every year for Christmas, or all winter or just apply it in summer and make a snow man made with ice cubes or i don't know, whatermelons? I guess that might work lol. Anyways, the vibe still applies to every season.

30 days to start making zines / a list of quick daily tasks to get into zine making

i tried a lot of "30 days challenge to [blank]" when i was a teen. they claimed to help you get into a habit. never worked for me, i've heard the science was junk but also the habits in question were rarely fun anyway.

i wanted to take a fun twist on those and make a list of tiny tasks you can do over the course of a month to get into zine making. when you want to commit to a project, making contact with it regularly is the goal! not necessarily achieving big steps in said project every day.

so here's my take on a zine making calendar! each day has a small task that can take a few minutes to however long you have and want to put into it. by the end you'll only have made one or two minizines if you only follow the list

i have a printable version available here, you could cut each strip of paper, fold them leaving only the number visible, and store them in a jar or envelope to pull your surprise task of the day over the 30 days
