Bangladeshi female student having a seizure in shock of being beaten in University of Dhaka
It's been 240 hours. I keep watching as my country turns into those dystopian fantasies I love reading about. Except there's no happy ending, there's no epic good vs evil fight.
It's my government, my police, my law enforcement units beating and killing my fellow students without any remorse, any judgement.
I love my country. Without any kind of doubt. I have been taught patriotism since my childhood. But how can I love my people and motherland any further when all it wishes to do is to kill, kill, kill.
Tumblr media
Police throwing tear shells in University of Dhaka from tanks
We live in a dystopia. Our law enforcement is here to kill brilliant students, students that want to make changes, students who speak up about their rights, students who build drones and robots. Our mainstream media wants the police to shoot at students so they can get exciting videos.
And they can get away with it. If social media is the only centre of our voice, then they'll block our internet. If the roads are where we protest, they'll order curfew.
Tumblr media
Students attending funeral (without bodies) for the students killed by police shootings
My university wants nothing to do with us. They're above student protests, they're above having any ounce of responsibility for the death of so many of my brothers and sisters. "It's out of my control", our vice-chancellor says. And our chancellor? Well the president has had speech disorder for years now. He'll be back for convocation and cutting ribbons soon.
They'll end the curfews soon enough. They will tell us to go back to the campus they drove us out of with gunfire and tear shells. But how will we do so while we have a conscience? How can I step over the blood shed by my fellow students? How will I go back to classworks and labs and hangouts when there have been dead bodies in those streets merely weeks ago?
Tumblr media
Injured dog (presumed dead by now) at the University of Dhaka campus
But it doesn't matter. This world does not care about genocides of millions of children in Palestine. Why would it care about 500 innocent students in such a small country like Bangladesh? My country, where equal chances at jobs and education needs a bloodier movement than establishing our language. Such a primitive land, isn't it?
Tumblr media
The green is gone. It hasn't been here for such a long time. I'm sorry for being so hopeless and useless and helpless.

Ok so like…measure theory? Yeah, arguably just analysis. Probability theory? Yeah, an extension of that and part of “discrete” mathematics also. Asymptotic theory and such? I mean these are objects of study stemming from that theory. So then the basics of mathematical statistics are mathematics.
But is it okay to include econometric/statistical techniques in “math”? Are random forests math? Well what about instrumental variables? When we also study the implications of how different DGPs affect our ability to construct estimators, does that count? Is developing a specific reject/accept framework for biopharmaceutical approvals “mathematics” per se or just mathematical?

so at my job, due to covid, we have to steam clothes everytime someone tries something on. after doing it for a long time, i decided to record how long it took for me to steam clothes in the span of 5 minutes. this included shirts, jackets, and pants.
Tumblr media
after taking about 40 minutes, i turned my results into a chart. it took me an average of 47.33 secs to steam and fold clothes. IM REALLY PROUD OF THIS GUYS! IT WAS A TWO DAY PROJECT!

there’s this economist, scott cunningham, who had a BA in literature but then turned into an economics phd. he wrote a famous book on quantitative economic techniques (econometrics) called the causal mixtape. reading his story this was a huge revelation for me. his transition to The Math Side as a means of understanding material conditions and social phenomena like poverty really exemplifies for me the value *for social science* that the new quantitative era can bring.
maybe i’m too math pilled now, but econometrics really opened my eyes to the missing potential social sciences has, even quantitative social sciences. econometrics centers the question of how agents or events causally affect others, and how you can actually empirically know that. while i love my arendt and lukacs and zizek, it’s one thing to postulate a narrative, and another to prove a causal relationship. that is so much more difficult, but feels so much more rewarding to do.
this ends up involving a lot of asymptotics and statistics and coding, and granted i think a lot of economists often aren’t answering very interesting questions, but when you get a meaningful result, it’s really quite profuound. for me, that’s worth the sharp turn in economics and social sciences as of late towards mathematics and empirical work. using new mathematical formulas and data to gain deeper understanding of centuries-old debates over political economy and the like feels like what social science is meant to do.
i keep wanting to get into the recent round of social science discourse but anything i say would basically be cope. i've ended up following a lot of programmers and mathematicians and such on here. and i generally enjoy it! but i'm also aware of how much disdain many people seem to have for me for being a lowly wordcel. which, if i'm being honest, really hurts (sorry, i know that if i were a truly rational shape rotator i wouldn't let my emotions affect me). so anyway here's my cope:
-yes the social sciences are flawed
-people in these fields are working to address these issues
-statistics are in fact helpful for improving social science
-some social scientists are in fact capable of doing statistics
-there seems to be a lot of variation in rigor between disciplines, and these distinctions may not be obvious to someone coming from a completely different field
-i don't think there's a shortage of talent and capability in the social sciences, even if they're using it in suboptimal ways
-i personally believe that social science questions are interesting and worthy of research, even if they're more difficult to research accurately

Next Exam: Sampling Distributions (18.06)
I am both relieved and terrified of my sophomore year finals this year. I need so much more marks for As. ADHD has been rampant lately. I totally lost all joy in studying. Pushing through anyways...
Today's to-do: (insha'Allah)
Pray all 5 prayers F D A M I
Discrete Probability Distributions: pmf, cdf, use, pgf, mgf, mean, variance
Continuous Probability Distributions: pdf, cdf, use, mgf, mean, variance
Generating functions: pgf,pmf,cgf
Distributions function technique of finding distribution of a random variable
Distribution of minimums and maximums
Nothing is easy except for what Allah makes easy and he can make all difficult easy 🤲🏽
Hope you guys have a great time studying ~

How much maths do you think you know?
Not enough, I find everyday. For context, I started studying math more seriously like a year ago when I added it to my major. I double major in economics and applied math.
I know a decent amount of real analysis and some gentle familiarity with the basics of complex analysis, my linear algebra is my weakest subject, and I have studied a decent amount of classic basic statistical theory, asymptotic econometrics, and mathematical probability up to markov chains. I am aiming to learn more about stochastic processes like brownian motion and improve my stochastic calculus/random matrices next year.
Edit - I forgot I also took discrete math.

Rise and Grind!
Finals week got me MESSED up. But, I wrote TWO essays in my second language in 24 hours. I have 1 left. PRAY FOR ME.
I took an oral exam this morning, didn't do so hot. I think it's because I sat studying vocab for the hour before the exam and didn't sleep much last night :/ That really sucks because I REALLY need an A in this class.
Today's to-dos are finish this essay and work on the last of my stat homework. Tomorrow, I have a stat quiz at 8 am, then I have to read an entire book and answer 100+ questions about it because I left it all till last minute. :) Thursday I plan on making some study guides for my German classes, the only classes I have finals for.
I am really grinding as best I can but I can not WAIT for this semester to be over.

Settling in to the first full week of part-time grad school/full-time work. I did finally get that promotion, so Wednesday’s are my official work from home days. It’s been very nice.
I still have actual work to finish up, but taking a break now to get some stats knocked out of the way and prepare for the first quiz. Learning (re-learning) about box and whisker plots right now. This is my first semester diving right into biostats (not to be confused with biomathematics that I was obsessed with in early undergrad and really do miss quite a bit), so I’m excited but also intimidated.

So, I've been in a bit of a crunch lately so I haven't posted but here goes
Wednesday- it was an econ study day. I didn't get the bus in the morning because my mom said she could take me to campus at 10 am but she was 3 hours late due to some hang ups at work. It's not her fault and I'm not upset with her but I did lose quite a bit of study time which was frustrating. I can't do econ work at home because I didn't buy the textbook, I check it out from the library every day.
But after an hour of econ I went to finish a German test my professor soooo kindly let me finish. She is very willing to work with me and help me keep up with the work having told her about not only my disability but also the problem I was having taking 2 blocks of German. So that's amazing
At 6 I went to take my State exam that I'd been studying for. It was really a lot easier than I thought it would be! I finished in less than 30 minutes and when I got my mark it was a 94. So I'm pretty proud of myself.
Thursday- Tuesdays and Thursdays are my busy days. I actually got to campus about an hour earlier than normal so I decided to go to the libary and get the econ book. For some reason I just couldn't dig in very well so I just left and had a walk. The weather yesterday was so lovely. It was cool and cloudless and the air smelled of fall. Yesterday really was the first day of fall and I'm so happy about it.
Then I went to the 4 hour German power block. It wasn't bad, just very grammar heavy. I'm making progress in the concpets they covered tho so thats good.
Then I tried studying in the library before teaching. Still couldn't dig in. So I got some lunch and left. No need to frustrate myself if it's just not working for me.
After I got to my classroom to teach, I found out the projector was broken! In a software class! So we couldn't show what we were doing on the board! Which sucked. And thus ensued a long 2 class periods of drawing menus from the program on the white board and explaining the same concepts every time someone raised their hand. IT came and said they couldn't do anything about it so that sucks. Here's hoping its fixed by monday.
Today- It's another econ study day! My exam is today and I'm a bit behind so I'm going to study as hard as I can until 1 then just take the exam. After that it's a game of dnd and home for a relaxing weekend.
The weather again today is so lovely. Just a bit colder than yesterday so I was glad my mom took me to school so i wouldn't have to sit at the bus stop for 30 minutes waiting on the bus.
Anyway, thanks for reading!
