March 20th, 2009
5am wake up. I roll out of the bottom bunk, throwing the spank tank curtain to the side. Couple of others wake up with me, but we have to keep quiet. Other guys are on different schedules due to mission timings and such. I quietly change out of my regulation PT gear and into my regulation uniform. No lights, just a headlamp with red lights. Don't want to wake others. Don't wanna draw attention from outsiders looking in. Such was the rules not spoken. Who would wanna be a target in a warzone?
I grab my battle rattle from the top bunk that protected me from possible mortar shrapnel as I slept. It was sitting next to my heavy ass duffel and A-bag that carries my chemical warfare gear. Just in case. I strap my leg holster to my right. M9 and M16 grabbed from the top bunk. M9 in holster. M16 to be slung over shoulder. I pick up my boots, upside down. Can't be too sure, so I shake them and bang them against my fist just in case the camel spider decided to do a sneak attack. Put on, strapped in, time to go.
The first smell of the morning Kirkuk air is filled with smoke from the burn pits. The open sewage that is on the other side of the mods and tents. It's early still, but just enough light to see where to go. You can hear the sounds of the mosques announce the day with the Fajr, the first of the Salah. We walk to the truck. It's time to head to The Swamp, HQ for Gator Sector.
------------------------------------------------------------
Morning brief. Intel reports. Supply convoy coming from Balad got tagged 2 hours prior. Troops in contact, no injuries. The boys were smart and saw the pressure plate wires in time. Another failed ambush. Convoy to Q-West today departing. Not me. Today, I work the Gator gate. I am not enthused.
I got an hour before changeover happens. Now's the time to run to get some food if ya want it. I wasn't hungry. I grab a black and mild from the last pack I had. I remind myself to buy more from Zo the next time he gets a package from his girl back home. One last begrudgingly bad gulp of dog shit coffee. One flick from the lighter to start the cigar. I jump onto the hood of the nearby Humvee and watch the sky wake up as I press play on my iPod. Coheed and Cambria's "In Keeping Secret Of Silent Earth: 3" - the first song that bears the album's name.
This was tradition now. This is what I did to get my head right. This is what I did 6,500 miles from home, where no one likes you. You are a target. You are at war.
The victim to our fathers' lost war...
Why am I even here, man? First, it was getting mission qual'd. Then SERE. Now here. Like, I know I was the dumbfuck that signed, but...still. Why am I here?
The restless children sit and mourn the graves of those they've never seen before...
I hope nothing happens today. Not today. Of all days. Bravo sector got lit the fuck up yesterday. Which they never get lit the fuck up. It's usually Gator. This is strange. This isn't typical TTPs for them. Something is amiss.
Will they be buried here, among the dead?
In the silent secret?
Fuck, I'm gonna think about this all god damn day until I figure it out. Was it mere coincidence? Maybe. But my fuckery sense is tingling. They don't shit where they eat. They aren't that dumb. I bet you they're trying to bring in someone through Gator. Which means overwatch. I'll need to take a look at recent new entries and coordinate with L3. Something seems off.
The pioneers - In dealing with if they march for dawn...Of will and worthy...
The boys are back from chow. It's time to load up and drive off. 12 hours of fantastic surprises await. 12 hours in the crosshairs. Happy birthday, Stephan. 24 years might just be my high score. We'll see what happens.
Man your own jackhammer!
Man your battle stations!
We'll have you dead pretty soon...

[TASK 164: FRENCH GUIANA]
There’s a masterlist below compiled of over 140+ French Guianan faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. If you want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever faceclaim or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags, @ mention us or send us a messaging linking us to your post!
THE TASK - scroll down for FC’s!
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK -  examples are linked!
Stumped for ideas? Maybe make a masterlist or graphic of your favourite faceclaims. A masterlist of names. Plot ideas or screencaps from a music video preformed by an artist. Masterlist of quotes and lyrics that can be used for starters, thread titles or tags. Guides on culture and customs.
Screencaps
RP icons [of all sizes]
Gif Pack [maybe gif icons if you wish]
PNG packs

TRIBE – The Ultimate Carnival Experience for the Greatest Show on Earth. At TRIBE, we pride ourselves on providing the Ultimate Carnival Experience in Trinidad and Tobago Carnival – one of the largest and most popular Carnivals in the world, and commonly referred to as “the greatest show on Earth”. From our humble beginnings in 2004, TRIBE’S mission has been to deliver the quintessential masquerader experience every year by matching the greatest show with the greatest service. In our inaugural year alone, we established a new standard of industry service by becoming the first all-inclusive Carnival band in Trinidad and Tobago. Since then we’ve grown from strength to strength each year, by consistently improving our already unparalleled service to always meet (but typically exceed) your increasing demands and expectations. Over a decade later, TRIBE has completely revolutionized the Carnival landscape, quickly becoming the largest Carnival band in Trinidad and Tobago and surpassing others that came long before it. In spite of such rapid growth, TRIBE never compromises quality over quantity, and we continue to perfect our product by keeping the masquerader at the fore and core of our operations. This unwavering consumer-driven mantra allows TRIBE to boast a consistent ‘sold out’ track record every year since our inception. A true industry pioneer, TRIBE always delivers from our band launch to our Las’ Lap, and we have you covered from registration to the road. Now approaching our 14th year and showing no signs of slowing down, we’re well on our way to one day earning the title of “the greatest band on Earth”, if we haven’t already.General InformationBand Leader: Dean Ackin 2018 Design Team: Monique Nobrega, Gail Cabral, Ruana Evans, Shawn Dhanraj, Solange Govia, Rhion Romany, Richard & Anthony Concepts & Designs Section Leaders Solange Govia | Anya Elias | Anya Ayoung-Chee | Sandra Hordatt | Samantha Ammon | Ruana Evans Marketing Affiliates SCORCH | Air Committee | Illusions Mas | TriniJungleJuice | Corah Ann Sylvester | BOOM Jamaica | UK TRIBE | Euphoria Carnival UK | Xaymaca Carnival (Jamaica) | ICEBOX Entertainment | The Golden Pineapple TRIBE Committee Members Andrea Deoseran . My alternative 89th Academy Awards
And so here, as I do every year, is my alternative Oscars ceremony. This is what would happen tonight if I - and I alone - stuffed the ballots and decided on all of the nomination and all of the winners. Non-English language films are accompanied by their nation of origin (in FIFA three-letter code).
89th Academy Awards – February 26, 2017 Dolby Theatre – Hollywood, Los Angeles, California Host: Jimmy Kimmel Broadcaster: ABC
Best Picture: LA LA LAND
Arrival, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Aaron Ryder, and David Linde (Paramount)
Fences, Todd Black, Scott Rudin, and Denzel Washington (Paramount)
Hell or High Water, Carla Hacken and Julie Yorn (CBS Films/Lionsgate)
La La Land, Fred Berger, Jordan Horowitz, and Marc Platt (Summit)
Moonlight, Adele Romanski, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner (A24)
O.J.: Made in America, Ezra Edelman (ESPN)
Our Little Sister (JPN), Kaoru Matsuzaki and Hijiri Taguchi (Toho Company)
The Red Turtle (FRA/BEL/JPN), Toshio Suzuki, Vincent Maraval, Pascal Caucheteux, Grégoire Sorlat, and Léon Perahia (Wild Bunch/Toho Company/ Lumière/Sony Pictures Classics)
The Salesman (IRN), Alexandre Mallet-Guy and Asghar Farhadi (Filmiran/Cohen Media Group)
Toni Erdmann (GER), Maren Ade, Jonas Dornbach, Janine Jackowski, and Michael Merkt (Komplizen Film/Sony Pictures Classics)
It’s a little disconcerting that only two major studio films are here. The mid-budget drama used to be the major studios’ bread-and-butter, and now that is gravitating ever more to the mini-majors and smaller studios. La La Land, Moonlight, O.J.: Made in America, and The Red Turtle all received 9/10 ratings from me. We essentially have a four-way tie for first, and I have to elevate one above the rest.
Some of my followers are gonna fume at my decision, but it’s La La Land for me. I approached that decision from a well-documented bias for musicals - fully aware of the film’s artistic, technical, and societal problems - the fact of the film’s cultural impact (I sometimes have a populist streak in how I see film history, and that’s a part of my personality), and personal taste (it came down to Moonlight and La La Land for me... I love both, but which movie would I not mind to waste 30 minutes on if nothing was on?).
If you ask me this question again in ten years’ time, my answer might very well change. I don’t have the luxury of hindsight right now.
Best Director
Damien Chazelle, La La Land
Michael Dudok de Wit, The Red Turtle
Ezra Edelman, O.J.: Made in America
Barry Jenkins, Moonlight
Hirokazu Koreeda, Our Little Sister
In my alternative Oscar universe, Koreeda nabs the latest of several nominations for Director, but he just can’t manage to break through in this category. It’s Jenkins for me, for crafting a story that I could not imagine having been filmed even five years ago.
Best Actor
Joel Edgerton, Loving
Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge
Ryan Gosling, La La Land
Sunny Pawar, Lion
Denzel Washington, Fences
Sunny Pawar has to hold up that first half of Lion, and he does so spectacularly. I also introduce Edgerton here as well. Garfield had a career performance in Hacksaw Ridge, and Gosling is a bit underrated. But it’s the one fellow nominated here who I would call a genuine movie star - a term that is thrown about too often these days, but I think he embodies it - in Denzel Washington. It’s a difficult performance, that, and he has perfected it to a tee.
Best Actress
Taraji P. Henson, Hidden Figures
Isabelle Huppert, Elle
Lâm Thanh Mỹ, Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass (VIE)
Ruth Negga, Loving
Emma Stone, La La Land
You’re scratching your heads on that nomination for Lâm Thanh Mỹ, I know. She gave the child performance of the year for me in a dizzying display of a range of emotions. But in the end, it’s Huppert. I sneak in Henson and Negga as well.
Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali, Moonlight
Jeff Bridges, Hell or High Water
John Goodman, 10 Cloverfield Lane
Lucas Hedges, Manchester by the Sea
Issey Ogata, Silence
Did you expect anything else?
Best Supporting Actress
Viola Davis, Fences
Naomie Harris, Moonlight
Suzu Hirose, Our Little Sister
Octavia Spencer, Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea
See above. Yet another child actress in Suzu Hirose, gets nominated... that’s three kids getting nominations in my alternative ceremony!
Best Adapted Screenplay
Park Chan-wook, The Handmaiden (KOR)
Eric Heisserer, Arrival
Barry Jenkins and Tarell McCraney, Moonlight
Hirokazu Koreeda, Our Little Sister
August Wilson, Fences (posthumous nomination)
Really, really tempted to give this to Wilson. So I hope, wherever he is, he didn’t mind this.
Best Original Screenplay
Stephen Chow, et al., The Mermaid (CHN)
Asghar Farhadi, The Salesman
Efthimis Filippou and Yorgos Lanthimos, The Lobster
Taylor Sheridan, Hell or High Water
Makoto Shinkai, Your Name (JPN)
Best Animated Feature
Kubo and the Two Strings (Laika/Focus)
Long Way North, France/Denmark (Maybe Movies/Sacrebleu Productions)
My Life as a Zucchini, Switzerland (Gébéka Films/GKIDS)
The Red Turtle, France/Belgium/Japan (Wild Bunch/Toho Company/ Lumière/Sony Pictures Classics)
Your Name, Japan (Funimation/Toho Company)
Zootopia was the second-best Disney film of the year, and it wasn’t even among the top five animated features of the year. Little-seen Long Way North and widely-seen Your Name (everywhere except North America, apparently) are in there instead. But The Red Turtle - a true transnational effort - is the best animated feature of the year.
Best Documentary Feature
I Am Not Your Negro (Velvet Film/Magnolia Pictures)
Life, Animated (A&E/The Orchard)
O.J.: Made in America (ESPN)
13th (Netflix)
Weiner (Motto Pictures/Sundance Selects)
I have to award ESPN’s ambitious 30 for 30 entry here. And it’s easily the best of the 30 for 30 films as well.
Best Foreign Language Film
Fire at Sea, Italy
The Handmaiden, South Korea
Our Little Sister, Japan
The Salesman, Iran
Toni Erdmann, Germany
Best Cinematography
Roger Deakins, Hail, Caesar!
James Laxton, Moonlight
Rodrigo Prieto, Silence
Linus Sandgren, La La Land
Bradford Young, Arrival
Best Film Editing
Tom Cross, La La Land
John Gilbert, Hacksaw Ridge
Bret Granato, Maya Mumma, and Ben Sozanski, O.J.: Made in America
Joi McMillon and Nat Sanders, Moonlight
Blu Murray, Sully
Best Original Musical
Gary Clark, Sing Street
Justin Hurwitz, La La Land
Mark Mancina, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Opetaia Foa’I, Moana
Best Original Musical is a category that must be activated by the Academy’s Music Branch, given that there are enough movie musical submitted for consideration. As I felt like there were enough movie musicals to warrant the activation of this category, I put these three films here (also, I wanted La La Land out of Original Score to preserve the category’s intent - to honor a film’s score, rather than its soundtrack). It has not been given under its current name; the last recipient of this award was Prince for Purple Rain (1984).
Best Original Score
John Debney, The Jungle Book
James Newton Howard, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Dario Marianelli, Kubo and the Two Strings
Laurent Perez Del Mar, The Red Turtle
John Williams, The BFG
Best Original Song
“Another Day of Sun”, music by Justin Hurwitz, lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, La La Land
“Audition (The Fools Who Dream)”, music by Justin Hurwitz, lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, La La Land
“Drive It Like You Stole It”, composed by Gary Clark Sing Street
“How Far I’ll Go”, composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Moana
“No Wrong Way Home”, music by Alexis Harte and JJ Wiesler, lyrics by Alexis Harte, Pearl
Yes, I have the audacity to nominate a song from a short film in here - “No Wrong Way Home” from Pearl. And “City of Stars” shouldn’t have been nominated, despite it being the earworm.
Best Costume Design
Colleen Atwood, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Madeline Fontaine, Jackie
Mary Zophres, La La Land
Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh, Love & Friendship
Dante Ferretti, Silence
Best Makeup & Hairstyling
Daniel Phillips, Florence Foster Jenkins
Jean Ann Black and Cydney Cornell, Hail, Caesar!
Eva von Bahr and Love Larson, A Man Called Ove (SWE)
Joel Harlow and Richard Alonzo, Star Trek Beyond
Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini, and Christopher Nelson, Suicide Squad
Best Production Design
Patrice Vermette and Paul Hotte, Arrival
Jess Gonchor and Nancy Haigh, Hail, Caesar!
Ryu Seong-hie, The Handmaiden
David Wasco and Sandy Reynolds-Wasco, La La Land
Guy Hendrix Dyas and Gene Serdena, Passengers
Best Sound Editing
Sylvain Bellemare, Arrival
Wylie Stateman and Renée Tondelli, Deepwater Horizon
Robert Mackenzie and Andy Wright, Hacksaw Ridge
Christopher Scarabosio and Matthew Wood, Rogue One
Alan Robert Murray and Bub Asman, Sully
Best Sound Mixing
Bernard Gariépy Strobl and Claude La Haye, Arrival
John Midgley, Tom Johnson, and Juan Peralta, Doctor Strange
Kevin O'Connell, Andy Wright, Robert Mackenzie, and Peter Grace, Hacksaw Ridge
Andy Nelson, Ai-Ling Lee, and Steve A. Morrow, La La Land
David Parker, Christopher Scarabosio, and Stuart Wilson, Rogue One
Best Visual Effects

Cheers and Goodbye, 2016!
Tumblr media
I would like to thank and bid 2016 goodbye before I move on to 2017.
2016 was a blur. I honestly do not know where ¾ of 2016 went. It felt like I  blinked then it was already fall and the year was already wrapping up. 2016 has been a very hectic year but a good year. I lived and breathed work in 2016. However, I have no regrets as my job brings me a great sense of meaning and satisfaction.  I am most likely going to be as busy in my career in 2017 but I am excited to meet every challenge.
So how did I do in 2016?
 MY AWESOME MOMENTS IN 2016!
TRAVEL TO MEXICO: I did it! After not traveling for almost 3 years the bf and I were finally able to take a vacation. We went on a 10-day cruise to Mexico where we visited 4 cities -- Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.
SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY: One of my best birthdays ever when the bf invited my family and gave me a surprise birthday party. I feel so loved and so blessed. ·
SUPER MOON: We had front row seats to view Super Moon in its brightest glory as we were sailing on our cruise. It was totally unexpected and it made our trip more memorable.:
NEW NEPHEW: I became an aunt again this year to the cutest baby ever!
CHECKED OFF MY 2016 MUST-DO LIST
GET RID OF EXCESS: It was one of my goals in 2016 to live with less and share more. I was able to donate clothes to charity. I also bought a shredder and shred unneeded documents.
EXPLORE MORE·  Aside from our international travel, we went on  a few local trips such as an afternoon at Half Moon Bay on New Year’s Day, Summer BBQ at Wildcat Canyon and a beautiful day by the ocean in Pacifica.·  I also stumbled upon great neighborhood discoveries such as coffee and donuts at a pretty garden in SF,  Oakland’s Temescal Alley, Cat Town Cafe and visits to Jack London Square in Oakland. *Checked off “travel,”  “go on a cruise” and “explore more.”
MUSEUM VISITS: I visited 5 museums this year (and joined SFMOMA as a member) --  Contemporary Jewish Museum, SF Museum of Modern Art, Palace of the Legion of Honor, Beach Chalet and Pacific Pinball Museum.
NEW COUCH:  I finally caved in and bought a new couch  to replace the one that my cat shredded to pieces!
NEW CAMERA:   I  bought a Sony Mirrorless A6000 camera because my poor old Nikon broke while I was in Mexico! I loved and still miss my  Nikon J1 but I am getting to know and like my new camera.  I think that my photography skills have improved since I started blogging 3 years ago! :)
DRINK MORE WATER/NO MORE CHINESE DELIVERY AND PASTA: These were the only three items that I was able to follow on my health list. I have never drank this much water in my life after the bf bought a water dispenser. Hot or cold water 24/7 and I love it! I stopped cooking pasta at home. It is more of a treat whenever we go out to eat. And no more sodium-laden chow mein, honey-walnut shrimp, etc as yummy as they were!
LOVE, FAITH, FAMILY AND FRIENDSHIPS
FAITH AND FAMILY· My church attendance in 2016 was not perfect but it was close enough. I went to church almost every Sunday and had lunch with my family after church almost every Sunday. These two were my most important items on my list in 2016 and I glad that I did it. I will continue to do so every year.
LOVE· Plenty of fun date nights with the bf.  Growing stronger and older together. 10 years together this year! It is such a blessing to find my life’s partner and continue to be happy together.
BFF: 2016 and years past were fun because of BFF. We both have an adventurous spirit and  appreciate simple joys. Lots of lunch dates with her and a couple of museum visits despite not seeing each other the entire summer.
FRIENDSHIPS: Girls’ Day at my house again after not having them over for almost 8 years! And another year of our Girls Holiday Dinner. ·New friendships with Bonnie and Kai, and delicious shared eats with friends like Karen and Jax.
THE UGLY
Trump’s election to presidency. I usually do not write anything political in nature or anything negative on my blog but this blog is my personal and safe space of expression. Election day was a very sad day for me. I am scared for my country and the world. I pray for peace despite the differences in people’s political views.
MORE HAPPY THINGS
I do not want to end on such horrible note so let me continue on with kind and bright things. Here are some of my favorite moments. They are like  happy snapshots that are embedded in my memory:
Walked on leaves of different colors in my neighborhood after the rain one early fall morning
Watching “Legent of Tarzan” with the bf under the stars on a outdoor movie duirng our cruise after swimming in the pool.
Visit to Gingerbread House with BFF.·
Her birthday which was May in October at SFMOMA
Donut and coffee
Sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge with the bf
A cozy Thanksgiving with friends
A beautiful day in December ·
Took lots of holiday pictures starting in December. ·
Took a couple of days off and park myself in the living room to stare at the tree and take in the magic.
As always, I am thankful for the blessings that 2016 has brought: my healthy parents in their old age, loving family, new baby nephew, friends for life and new friendships, abundant feasts that we share with those who have no easy access to nourishing meals, warm home,  kind co-workers and a fulfilling career, health, happiness, beautiful changing of the seasons shared with BFF, the freedom of expression and worship, and simple joys.
Thank you, 2016! Welcome, 2017!
(Picture was taken on our cruise ship one decadent afternoon of drinking bubblies and reading chicklit  while at sea -- November 2016)
And a very talented artist painted an art work of this picture @peintre-stephane ! See his beautiful work here.
