another random thing that stands out to me rewatching Steven Universe as an adult:
throughout the show there's this clear Vibe that Steven has inherited some big magical destiny, right? and it makes sense narratively: he's the son of Rose Quartz, leader of the rebellion, now being raised by her friends who were the last remaining survivors of an interstellar war. he's like a human child in most ways, except he has magical powers that start to become more obvious as he's getting older. no one like him has ever existed before. it's a big deal. raising him and figuring out how he's going to grow is its own unique challenge, because nobody knows what to expect. so of course there's this magical destiny vibe, given all that.
What's interesting to me, though, is that this magical destiny is in no way literally, physically present in the story, it's just something everyone kinda feels. Like, there's not some ancient prophecy about a half-gem, half-human savior. He's not the Chosen One in any literal sense, he just happens to give off Chosen One vibes. And I say that's interesting because it means that the fact he was kinda raised with this Chosen One vibe is completely a decision everyone around him made, for better or for worse. And the show is aware of this, because the weight of Rose's legacy and everyone's expectations of him is a constant theme, and as Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl all grow and develop, they also realize the downsides of them putting those expectations on a child. Like, Steven spends his whole childhood being told about how great Rose was, and how because he's inherited her gem he will probably inherit her powers - and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Imagine how awful things could have been if Steven had no exposure to the Gems and no knowledge of what they were or how they worked, and then his powers started coming in? It was hard enough even when he was surrounded by the most qualified Gem Experts on Earth. But being primed for all of this "you're going to have your mother's magical powers" stuff put a heavy weight on his shoulders, and then the fact that nobody else quite knew how his abilities worked meant he was constantly faced with the adults in his life looking to him with concern because they didn't know what was happening with him. That's gotta leave an impression on a kid - and, well, throughout the show and especially in SU Future we definitely see that it does.
I like the way the show handles the pressure that's put on him, and the fact that everyone is just... trying their best in a completely unprecedented situation. Nobody knows what to do or how to raise this kid, and that inevitably causes problems but everyone is trying. And Steven can feel that everyone is trying without knowing what to do and he just wants to help and not be a burden and none of his caretakers have said that he's a burden but he can feel everyone's confusion and concern and the expectations he's not living up to and he cares so much, about everyone, about everything. He's in an extremely unique position that grants him opportunities to help that nobody else has, and he feels like he's failing everyone if he can't fulfill that, and in the end it never should have been his job to fix things but somebody had to try. Somebody had to try, and he was one of the only people with the ability to stop the Diamonds, stop the war, stop the lies, stop his world and everyone on it from being destroyed... and he was just a kid.

Suddenly thinking of a mostly mute Bucky.
After decades of being trained to only speak when spoken to (and still being punished for speaking at all more often than not) and enduring an unspeakable amount of brain damage, Bucky doesn’t speak much. At first, Steve is nothing but heartbroken for his friend. He remembers the days before the war when Bucky would talk and talk, telling Steve all sorts of stories like they had no end. And when he sang… It was like heaven to Steve’s ears, hearing problems be damned. Of course, Bucky got quieter during the war, but he wasn’t anywhere near as silent as he is now. (Hell, he doesn’t even make any noise while walking now. It’s a little unnerving and Steve has been jump scared in his own home more times than he’d care to admit.)
Steve is nothing but adaptable and supportive, though. For a while, he simply communicates with Bucky via interpreting his looks and gestures alone. He slips up and misunderstands Bucky every now and then, but they get along so much better than they reasonably should this way. No one else understands how they do it so easily. When Steve’s asked, he just shrugs and says, “I’ve known him since I was six.”
It isn’t too long though before Steve reveals that he’s learned some sign language to teach Bucky. To give him his voice back, in a way. Bucky picks it up with little issue. After learning the basics, the first thing he signs to Steve is, “Punk.” Steve is so surprised that he laughs. And laughs and laughs. By the time he’s got himself under control, he’s treated to the sight of one of Bucky’s rare smiles, warm and full of affection.
It takes a while, but the next time Steve sees that smile is when he and Bucky are alone in Steve’s bedroom, sitting on his bed. They’re close, so close. The air is thick with a tension that’s always existed between them, ready to burst now. Bucky’s eyes are trained on Steve’s lips and he keeps signing one thing, over and over. “I love you. I love you. I love you.” When they kiss, it’s everything Steve could’ve dreamed of and his heart soars when he hears Bucky make a sound, a soft little moan. When they finally part, Bucky’s smiling so brightly that Steve is helpless to fight back a smile of his own.
“Love…you,” Bucky whispers. It’s so quiet even Steve’s heightened hearing hardly picks it up. If his heart was soaring before, now it is singing.
“I love you, too,” he whispers back, reverent and so, so fucking grateful.

Oh my god I figured it out.
When people say "we need more morally grey characters" and then immediately turn around and accuse morally grey characters of being evil, I think that is directly equivalent to the amount of screentime they have.
Like, people LOVE the characters in Arcane despite none of them being pure people, but people are quick to hate on characters like Ford Pines or Rose Quartz despite them doing similar things because we barely get to know them.
When those people say "we need more morally grey characters," they just mean they want a chance to get to love them.
No no I have proof.
The Pines Twins are pretty equal to each other in different ways about the crimes they've committed and how good they are doing it, but people adore Stan and hate Ford because Stan gets two full seasons of screentime whereas Ford only gets BARELY half a season.
We don't know him as well, and by the time we meet him we already love Stan, so hearing about him shutting the curtains or the "remember our childhood dream? Go live it out without me while doing this thing I need you to do," makes people MUCH quicker to jump to Stan's defense, which online QUICKLY turns to "I hate Ford so much" rather than a genuine conversation about the presented conflict at hand.
Or take anyone in SU. All the main characters make a pretty big bad decision at some point- Pearl left Steven to drop, Amethyst shapeshifted into Rose, ect- but we do forgive them because we love those guys and we have gotten to know them.
But Rose is dead. We can't get to know her and have to piece together who she was through other's retellings of her. The only time we see Rose as herself is in Steven's tape, and even then, her message to him is scripted. So when we find out Rose is Pink, and we see everyone fall apart, instead of trying to understand why she'd do this, people instead jump to "she betrayed everyone, I hate her."
Not saying this is an invalid way to write morally grey characters (please don't stop doing it this way actually), but I AM saying that fandom should be more aware of this from a psychological perspective.
Something to think about.

Im watching Steven Universe for the first time and like. You all lied. This show is amazing. The characters are great, the storytelling is fascinating, and the way it handles moral questions is really thoughtful and interesting. Im really upset at what tumblr and the internet more broadly did to steven universe.

Pov: you tell Marc and Jake that they actually look really cute with their glasses and so they start wearing them more often. And you call them and Steven cute whenever they do wear them.

My dearest apologies once more, Mr. Walker, Marc still hasn’t gotten over the whole…incident with the Flagsmashers. He’svery stubborn.
Once again, deepest and sincerest apologies. I…I’ll clean up the mess.
Oh, and Jake says hi. He’s a fan.
Just killed a man. Left him in front of the tower, mind cleaning it up for me, ‘captain’?

Which best describes the ship you're currently most obsessed with?
it doesn't have to accurately describe the ship, just the descriptor you think is the most fitting. all gendered language is there to preserve the meme and should be read as gender neutral. please reblog for a greater sample size. if you are equally obsessed with multiple ships or currently not obsessed with any, just pick a ship you enjoy (if you don't like any ships, the dynamic you think sounds the most entertaining)
edit: if multiple fit perfectly, chose the aspect you like best about the ship
