Someday I will draw something or craft something profound regarding the handling of Varric in this game. Today is not that day, but someday. But I still want to talk about Varric.

Survivor of three to four strokes (we're certain about three and pretty sure about the fourth), cancer survivor, chronic pain patient during the worst of the opioid epidemic, smoker for like 50+ years, three heart stents, type 2 diabetic, lymphodema, neuropathy, five million other things I can't remember at this point. This was a man who didn't think he would live past 42 and the universe decided that that was really funny and wanted to spite him. He was one of the smartest people I've ever known and had an absurdly sharp memory and five billion stories. A former radio DJ, the man liked to perform even when he didn't think he was on stage. I can chart times in my life based on what was the key health issue for my dad at the time. I am intimately familiar with our local hospital in ways I hope no one other than an employee would be.

You can begin to see where the trouble is.

For the last.... idk, ten or so years of my father's life, he was really hindered in his mobility. He could walk, but it was a struggle. We went slow, we jumped between a walker and a cane and just stubbornly hobbling through a parking lot and me helping him climb up that most insurmountable of obstacles: a sidewalk curb. And then in the game, he's alive. He's banged up and immobile, but he's "alive." And that somehow delighted and irked me. "Ah, of course!" I thought. "Bioware chickened out! They couldn't kill Varric off!"

Of course, I had thought so many times before, Dad's in the hospital again! But he'll pull through this time! He always does!

I was doing my traditional "first playthrough of a character that is like me but a little different" and playing a nonbinary character I just called Pink Haired Erika Ishii. And every time I was in the lighthouse, my loop was to talk to everyone outside, mourn the fact that I fucked up Lucanis's route and plan to do better next time, go visit Emmrich my actual romance in that route, and then do the flyby "HI DAD WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ME TODAY" into Varric's room. I played that Rook like Varric was a father figure they'd never really had-- they loved their Shadow Dragon friends, but those were siblings at best, and not fathers-- so every single little random line of advice dialogue from Varric was something that they clung to while navigating the world ending. I made fun of how he looked almost "photoshopped" in to every scene with my friends a lot.

It was so familiar. Varric called Rook "kid" a lot. I was "darlin'," in my dad's remnants of a southern drawl.

I loved the Regret Prison concept in the game. OOOOHOHOHO, YES, I thought, in my little goblin brain, the stakes are so high and we've been FULLY REMOVED from the field and have to CONFRONT shit and yessssss. For all of Veilguard's flaws, I loved the third act and basically most things that had to do with the main plot.

And then I realized the Varric reveal all of fifteen seconds before it happened.

There is so much that went into that twist hitting me like a freight train. It really was very clever writing, and there was this meta level of expectation as a long-running Bioware fan just kind of expecting things to not go the way, narratively, that I thought they should or that I wanted them to.

I've always said since Dad passed that grief is not a cycle. A cycle implies a kind of linear motion that's just not there. Grief is like a tennis ball in a tumble dryer. It bounces around sometimes with some amount of violence between acceptance and depression and bargaining and anger and sometimes it just makes a full circle in the drum... and sometimes someone turns the dryer off for a few years, only to have it start spinning up again.

It really was a good catharsis. I'm really glad to have experienced it without spoilers. It was one of the most memorable moments in a game for me in my whole life, in a game I only mostly liked, for reasons the game did not wholly intend.

RIP to a real one.

Thinking about how good the Varric being dead the whole time reveal really was. Like.

We get the trailer and we’re excited and we’re ignoring the dumbasses who think it’s Fortnite (it’s not). We get the gameplay trailer and it’s fifteen minutes of beauty. We go into it and we see Bianca die!! In front of us! And then solas stabs Varric! We’re worried! But no, they wouldn’t kill Varric off before we have the goddamn game right? But we’re scared. We’re oh so scared. Because what if they did??

But we get the game informer article and thank god. They didn’t. It confirms, right there, that we see Varric again. He’s not dead. They didn’t kill him.

And then we get the game and it’s a little weird. Like. Sometimes Varric talks and no one responds. Nobody else visits him. But he’s still there. He still talks to you. You go talk to him before every big quest. He talks about Lucanis.

And it’s the point of no return. You pick if you lose neve or Bellara. You watch Harding or davrin die. Lucanis is just passed out right? What is solas doing? That motherfucker what is he doing? Why is the statue you’re holding… Varric?

You talk to neve or Bellara and it’s about loss. It’s about responsibility. You talk to davrin or Harding and it’s about doing what it takes. It’s about choices. Is it Lucanis yet? No. But you know, now, who it is now.

He was always gone. He’s been gone the whole time (go away Sam Reich, we’re mourning our DAD). He died in our arms at the start of the game and we never got to mourn him. Solas used blood magic to fuck with our brains and denied us that ability to mourn the most beloved character of this franchise. The love of our hawke (platonic or romantic). The best friend of our inquisitor. The storyteller who has been there for us since the beginning. And then solas killed him and never let us mourn.

And how brilliant was that?

They killed him in front of us months before the game released and then did the EXACT SAME THING that solas did to rook. They told us he wasn’t actually dead look he’s perfectly fine see? He’s alive! Look he says things to you! He’s still there!

The art of Sonic X: flaws and merits

Fan warn against referencingt from Sonic X art because is often wonky. There are meme featuring the worst photograms (sometimes they cheat using in-betweens).

Yet, if you want to learn Uekawa style doing more than side or 3/4 poses, the art of Sonic X will greatly help, since it tries to imitate that style.

I would start from what looks bad -

Beware of the quills

Sonic's

Sonic was a bit complicated. He was born as 2d character for a 2D game. Not much thinking was done to make him look good in 3D. For long artists tried to figure out how Sonic was supposed to look in front view, some simply choosing a mohawk, other drawing the quills on both side.

The fact that he looks best best on side view, both in 2D and in 3D is very telling about his origins.

Three examples, Uekawa's art, Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Prime.

when Sonic was turned into a 3D character, front view pictures were still rare. every artist tried to figure out and came with different solution.

In the end, Uekawa's was the most accurate.

Shadow's

With Shadow things are really different. He was born in 3D, it was already clear how he was supposed to look like. He looks great from every side. And yet, in Sonic X they drew him weird. Is like they never saw Shadow before (it was 2005, he was around for a while), they were guessing.

On Uekawa's side view art, he looks like this, with only one quill stiking out from the far side. Some rendering from Sonic Speed simulator played with this. But on front view his head is star shaped both in 2D and in 3D

At least once they drew him correctly. They could do this always.

Things that seem bad but they're actually good referencing material

I guess many of you, looking at this though: 'No way, AoStH cursed mohawk is back!

And yet, the mistake clearly show Sonic's head structure, where his ears are placed, roughly his facial structure. Is useful if you have difficult to see the structure in Uekawa's art. Also, the size of his ears are correct in this particular frame.

I think is helping me.

Is even in front side, so rare in official art (even on SEGA's official site).

I think, although not always great, you can take some expressions as a tip.

Off model. But if you don't like the short torso, well... here a torso that looks more normal. I also like the overall smaller hands and Sonic's flatter feet, they look more manageable and more flexible.

Sonic X art is flawed, but it can be surprisling very helpful. Treat it with care, but don't fear to reference from it.

Some doodles as I try to work out/cement in my head what I want Camus to look like. He’s a half moon elven sorcerer/red dragon disciple | draconic-bloodline sorcerer of red dragon ancestry (I believe they’re also called dragonsouls?). He’s getting wings because screw whoever decided we couldn’t have them anymore after giving them to us in NWN1, and also horns and a tail because they’re cool and I can. I’ve written a few fics with him which can be found over on AO3—currently there are two each for NWN1, NWN2, and BG3.

They ended up looking yellowish, but his eyes are supposed to be pale jade (with the little golden flecks that apparently moon elves have, according to the FR wiki).

It's Lokius! I think they've given me everything I never knew I could have. It's a classic enemy to friends to lovers, built on mutual trust and respect. It's a god in love with a mortal, but the mortal in question is older than the god and also has watched his entire life because he's interested in the mechanics of his being. It's a tragedy, inherently, but it's also incredibly mundane considering the circumstances. It's two people who like each other so much, who cannot stop touching each other, and - ultimately - the entire multi-verse is saved because one guy believed that someone canonically irredeemable could be a better person. I love them so much.

H - What is your favorite source text for fandom stuff (e.g., TV shows, movies, books, anime, Western animation, etc.)?

I really like comics/books and that's where I source most of my "canon". I'm not really into the MCU movies, though now that I'm very into Loki it is my great exception. I don't base Deadpool or Spider-Man after anything in their respective movies because I don't like their approaches to the character enough to be inspired by them. I also don't read enough comics to be a true comic-canon writer, but I do like peppering my writing with little details and notes from them.

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending? 

I am truly where headcanons go to die. I don't have them (or, more realistically, everything I write is true regardless of its alignment with the source)

W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.

I really think that the way fandom writes about sex workers is not only wrong/misinformed/fetishy, but pretty universally bad. I have definitely read some half-decent ones before, but in general it's like. Oh. You don't understand how this works at all! That sucks! (I'm looking at you stripper/cam aus. I am looking at you.)

X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.

I am a sucker for barbarian AUs they are my guilty pleasure of all time. I love arranged marriage and forced proximity and all that jazz.

Yay rpg maker stuff :3. I should make more updates that aren’t just little concept doodles cause I have gotten a couple rooms to work, but eh. The game itself is still in like the getting the whole map figured out stage, then I’ll have to go through and plan where story specific events will happen, what characters appear where, major puzzles, whether or not there will be a battle system, etc etc. but I do have a lot of things down and have figured out how the program works for the most part! You guys get to see the map planning page early hehe, also the little girl character (who I still need to figure out the name of whoops—)

Anyway, these two are some main characters, Layne and Reid. I don’t wanna spoil too much about them, but they are also med school students and test subjects like Miran. Layne is the one with their hair to their right and spiky ends, Reid is the one with their hair over their left eye and a rounder style.
