allergies are acting up so I’m wide awake but I’m thinking about how Mia Winters got to connections again and I’m feeling so sick
#///#okay here me out#Ethan and Mia meet when they’re undergrads in uni#study diff fields etc etc#they properly meet at a party and they realise they have like one class together idk idk#I forget I think Ethan does tech stuff or smthn but maybe he was testing around#I think Mia very much was going into the direction of biochemistry (obvious I know)#but i think she’d wanna be a microbiologist— would fit into the virus thing#and she’s a person who genuinely wants to help others I feel so 👩🍳#anyways— when Mia is still finishing up her studies or maybe in the middle of it idk how long this feild takes#I just know she’d be the best in her class#anyways— connections finds her and she starts interning#like they have her do relatively normal things#and the. slowly push her until her morals fall apart#that’s a way I can see it happening naturally#bc why else would she keep this a secret from those she loves ?#the fact that she hid this tells that she understands deep down she is doing something wrong#and then it was too late to fix it all#I think the reason I’m so pissed abt the dlc is the fact that they could have expanded on Mia’s character#the mistakes she continuously makes#hiding secrets- lying- etc#she could have changed for rose- her daughter#or she could have learned to change#sooo much wasted potential it’s sad#kinda like Luis actually they might be similar in their pasts💭

This theme(/trope, motif, etc) shows up in a few diff fics but this is the one that's re-crossed my path lmao, so you get the quote from this fic.
But like., the theme of agents being trained/conditioned to respond to (obey) their handler's voice? and/or certain code phrases, distress words, etc. and like. lmao. Q taking advantage of it to Prove A Point lol
anyway here's the quote
But not inexperienced, and certainly not incompetent. Not even at this, so seemingly far out from Q's usual arena - Q wields the staff with ease, his body loose and fluid and James wants to take him through his paces, wants to put Q through a senior field agent’s obstacle course to see what else the man is hiding up his sleeves, to study how he compensates for his weaknesses. Q is not a field agent but James doesn’t doubt he’d be very, very good at disabling the obstructions set before him, that brilliant mind ever his greatest asset. “Status, Bond,” Q suddenly says, and James catches his eyes, their gazes locking; there’s a snap of command in Q’s voice, a tone pitched to draw attention and one agents are practically conditioned to listen to, except this time it’s accompanied by a lightning quick thrust of the staff aimed at James’ solar plexus.
Part 4 of Traceability, Observations in Three Steps by blackidyll
anyway I love it bc *gestures at the recurring motifs of this blog* well. you know me lmao. But also it speaks to that like. deep trust & rapport that Q & Bond have developed between them. literally this is working dog & his handler behavior. There's another fic I can't remember off the top of my head but it has a moment when Q is. trying to hack sth or other? And Bond wants them to leave. But Q tells him wait, and Bond pov narration has sth like about how Q is using that voice he on comms which means he's working with additional intel than Bond has so Bond has to trust his Quartermaster's judgment on this.
There's also another fic where they're doing like a carnival shooting game and they're p evenly matched, and then Q casually drops Bond's code word to mean danger which breaks Bond's focus on the game lol..
anyway I eat this shit right up

OKAY SO HES STILL NOT PETER FROM THE BIBLE BUTTTT XJDJD
last time i updated you was at the party, I think. HE INVITED ME TO A PARTY after walking me home (a longer route) AND THE BOTTLE AND STUFF BHT DIDNT SAY A WORD TO ME. He didn’t flirt at ALL, barely even spoke to me. he said hi and that was it. literally. i was SO UPSET
but turns out i have mutual friends with two of his housemates and i was PISSED so i spent all my time talking to them and didn’t let myself be alone for even a second (bc i didn’t wanna seem boring idk i was doing the most in my tipsy petty moment) and we actually bonded over a lot. ANYWAYS.
SO you know how me and hat hoodie met bc we would study for our summer exams from opening till closing? WE FINALLY FINISHED OUR EXAMS and campus was SO FUN. literally everyone was at patties etc and guess what. still. NO FLIRTING. i was sad but accepted it bc he’s very hot and things don’t usually go my way 😭
anyways so fast forward like another week and we’re at this field on campus. im gonna send you a pic privately but it’s this HUGE field. i just googled a lacrosse field and it looks similar? like it’s HUGE. a HUGEEE piece of land that looks onto our campus (it’s so pretty) and it opens up during summer and people basically camp out 24/7 once classes end. it’s rhe BESTTT vibe durint the summer like there are 837383 speakers and there’s a diff game going on in every corner of the field. and different music from each speaker but it’s somehow never overwhelming. like one corner will be playing football and the next will be playing netball and everyone always brings ice cream and stuff and you just move around to different spots all day. there’s no “friendship” groups, like everyone just mixes. it’s so fun.
anyways i went to the rap corner bc i wanted their ice lollies (my friend said they had the strawberry ones) and I didn’t see HE WAS THERE but he was and he handed me the ice lolly and our hands touched and girlll there was a SIZZLE. but I was still mad so I acted nonchalant but he started talking and i was fed up like I don’t wanna go in circles of him flirting with me then giving me absolutely nothing for a week, and then talking to me again? but I was tipsy and the ice lolly (i just realised u guys say popsicle) (omg my adhd is really showing in this ask sorry im usually more contained) anyways the ice lolly was nice and I was buzzed so my anger fizzled and we started talking. he never gave me an excuse or a reason but I was drunk so I didn’t really care. but we like cleared the air kinda
all of my friends went home a few days later but I wanted to stay until our lease ended bc i don’t like going home and if im paying rent for the whole year (until mid august) i wanna use it yk? but all of my friends are gone and campus is kinda lonely (apart from the field) without them so his friend group/housemates kinda adopted me and I hung out with them EVERY DAY. their fifth housemate went home for the summer and I stayed in his room one night (clean sheets and his room has a lock so I felt chill) (off campus houses in the uk usually don’t have locks unless u add them in) omg j i almost died knowing he was next door.
i got up to pee at 2am & at the same time he got up to get water and I swear TIL THE DAY I DIE ill believe he just heard me get up and made up an excuse but anyway. we were talking and it was so LATE AND HE LIDNDJSKSKKSSKS I WENT TO THE KITCHEN TO SEE HIM after I peed bc he looked good (shirtless and boxers) AHDBDSNS AND WE WERE TAKKINF DOR A LITTLE BIT AND ONE THING LED TO ANOTHER AND HE KISSED ME
and this was only my 3rd kiss so I was kinda shy BUT AHDHDHDSBSJS I WAS DYINGGGGG but it started getting deeper and i thought he wanted it to lead to sex and I didn’t so i pulled away and he didn’t complain or really say anything ab it and apparently it took me too long to open my eyes after so he’s been making fun of me since then bc apparently I was dazed DNDNS ANYWAYS
HE WAS SMILING SO MUCH. he ended up going home to see his sister before she goes on some camp thing so there was a break and we didn’t talk during it (kinda weird I was overthinking it sm) but he came back and we’ve been kissing & I’m still hanging out with the house (who are like my main friend group at this point) and it hasn’t led to anywhere else (we haven’t had sex) (we won’t be having sex) and IDK what he wants, if it’s just a summer thing or not. i don’t think he has feelings for me and I don’t think he’s catching them but I do think he likes me as a friend bc he rlly likes my company and is always laughing but I think he mainly just likes making out with me which im not complaining but yeah. maybe it’s just fwb for him but I am CRUSHINGGGGGG hard hard
THIS WAS SO LONG IM SORRY I NEED TO TELL U THE CHERRY MOMENT NEXT
-🤍
the way i am gasped, gagged and gaping at this.
the kisses.... the SNEAKING OUT to kiss you... why is this giving secret lover..... i'm so seated.
i cannot wait for this to unfold more. AS FOR WHAT HE WANTS- idk but i'd keep feeling it out for more kissies 😚

Your takes on Rishi Sunak read exactly like you're a tory if you were British 😳 yes he's poc, yes he's the first poc to be pm in this country, but that means fuck all when his policies are going to affect much of the persons of colour in this country negatively. But wow its a huge moment because representation Matters?
This is what happens when you think the entire world revolves around you and your country 😭
I literally responded to the post from the perspective of someone who lives in a POC country 😐 you cannot assume that just bc someone is a POC they will automatically care about the poor + POC. If that was the case, my country and many other countries similar would not be suffering the way we are … we would not have over 60%+ of our population living in poverty, shitty education policies etc.
Also, assuming that he should just care about POC bc he is a POC is just another form of identity politics + populism (or wanting a populist president). The EXACT SAME THING YALL SHAME MODI, BOLSONARO, TRUMP etc + their voters for 🥲 obvs not as extreme, but still identity politics.
People in general are individualistic and selfish… their own interests will always come first. If you think ANY politician … no matter the party is diff … I’m calling indoctrination 😭 you’re out here fighting for your l*ftist besties and your besties are out here dining with your ‘enemies’.
Also, when did I say representation matters? I literally LOL bc it’s such a ???? Who would have ever presumed that we would have such a full circle moment lmao???? I personally don’t care about representation, I care about the most qualified and appropriate person having the job - once again stemming from the issues in MY COUNTRY!! Y’all always want to compare the west to the global south but now it’s problem when we do it? Let’s not act like y’all don’t come to our countries and talk about how ‘cheap’ stuff is here etc. without taking into consideration OUR lived experiences.
Also, wtf should I not be impressed by his academic credentials ?? It’s impressive af … especially considering that almost all of my leaders are liberation leaders, who have no qualifications for their position. Which in turn has resulted in rolling blackouts, lack of water, high unemployment, unequal affirmative action policies (in a sense that it’s created an elite group of POC rather than helping the majority), and a failing education system with a 30% pass rate.
So yes, education does not equate to worth, but having people who actually studied something relating to their field and getting the job had me SHOOK bc the conversation is such a contrast to what’s happening in my COUNTRY. But I once again forgot, I have no right to talk from the perspective of my country 😭👍🏽👍🏽 the entire world revolves around your country!! My bad <33
Tho, one thing that has pissed me off (I didn’t think it would bc im not the most in tune with my Indian culture or religion), is how anti-Hindu are lot of these posts calling Rishi out are. But yeah … your identity politics is selective yeah? 😵💫oh and how can I forgot, people that aren’t from the west have no right to feel attacked when people demonize them 😔👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 we just need to agree to however ppl treat us bc our politicans are poc 👍🏽👍🏽

Welps here we go! New Vegas School Headcannons lol,
If anyone wants to add onto these they’re welcome too ^^ these are just my ideas on how schools might work in the wasteland
Most schools in the wasteland are small and non centralized. They’re either small private schools that people pay to go to or are informal schools run by volunteer staff (usually other parents). These schools teach basic literacy and arithmetic skills and vocational skills, and some other subject works if it’s a private school with more resources.
Most kids in the wasteland (especially kids who live in small towns/farms or kids whose families can’t afford formal schooling) are homeschooled by their families or go to an informal school.
The Followers of the Apocalypse first started to open widespread schools across the wasteland as they expanded their facilities. These schools were structured to teach core subjects such as science, math, literature and history and also have a strong emphasis in self exploration/interest based study. All of the schools are either free or very cheap because they’re geared towards the average wastelander. A lot of Followers schools (such as ones in facilities like Mormon Fort) also teach literacy and vocational skills for adults.
The first Followers school was opened at their headquarters in Boneyard, nowadays it’s a university/research facility/hospital. Most of the followers in Mormon Fort studied there. Anyone can become a follower, but in order to do research in a specific field or do medical practice they need to train and get certification for it. Mormon Fort does a fast tracked version of this training for medical practice because they’re so short staffed in their hospital.
The school in Mormon Fort is a giant tent where several scheduled classes take place such as schooling for diff age groups of kids, classes for adults, training/briefing sessions for the followers, etc. It’s either located in Mormon Fort or just outside of it, so the school doesn’t disrupt the hospital.
Outer Vegas/Freeside also has their own private school but it’s a little costly so only wealthier residents attend it. Yes, this adds to the class tensions in the city.
The NCR started making their own public school system as a response to the Followers schools and as a way to ‘unify’ the country education-wise. It’s modelled after Pre-War schools and yeah. It’s pretty biased in the NCR’s favor gfhjsdj what did we expect.
These schools are more prevalent in the cities and in larger towns though the NCR is trying to expand them into the rural communities.
The NCR also tries to rapidly expand their school system by taking over private schools and making them public schools instead. The good thing about this is that the school is free to attend now. The bad thing is y’know. Propaganda. Also I feel like the NCR would overextend themselves with this and the schools wouldn’t have many resources/funding.
A lot of people in the NCR still homeschool or informally teach their kids so attendance at their public schools isn’t great. The government is debating making attendance mandatory.
The school in New Canaan is a private Christian School. As you’d expect gsdfg
Larger towns like Primm have their own small private schools and small towns like Goodsprings have informal schools.
In Jacobstown they’re thinking about opening a small informal school for supermutants who want to learn other skills/subjects.
The Legion doesn’t have schooling persay? It’s more like Caesar has these “temples” modelled after Roman ones that “teach” kids his ideology. These are run by those priestesses they mentioned in the cut content. It’s meant to be how he makes sure the next generation of the places he conquered is loyal to the legion. Attendance is mandatory. Libraries and schools are very controlled to make sure that the Legion is the only “reliable” source of info people deep in its territory have. So basically it’s all just. Blatant Propaganda.
The small size of the Enclave and Brotherhood meant that it was easy to have kids in their own small school. These classes were pretty much like pre-war classes with a militaristic edge to them. Teens would be trained in combat/power armor training. Kids in classes were also expected to ‘chip in’/help the organization by helping with distribution, propaganda, etc.
A lot of pre-war ghouls started the first proper schools in the wasteland as a means of keeping info alive.

So lost on what I want my degree to be, I want it to be lucrative and be able to work from sometimes.
The good thing about the American College system is that you will have at least two years to try to figure this out. While you take your core classes and talk to people and other majors and your professors you might start to get an idea of what you’d like to do.
I’ll also say that unless you want to be a doctor, surgeon, engineer or working computer science etc. your major probably won’t matter that much and even some software engineers I know didn’t study computer science in school. They just did Boot Camps after. Since I started working in tech my senior year in college I don’t think any of my managers knew what I was majoring in And I doubt my current managers know what my degree is in.
Thanks to the pandemic, now almost any job that can be done on a computer will probably be work from home in some capacity. Even if it wasn’t advertised that way you can probably still negotiate at least one or two work from the home days with your manager (especially in tech).
Ultimately, My advice would be that you choose a major that has disciplines that can be applied to multiple fields. For example, I have a sociology degree but I work in marketing and sales at a tech company and previously worked in marketing analytics at a diff tech company. My major in sociology taught me how to do research but it also made me very good at math. So I took a lot of statistics classes which made me good with analytics and data which is very good skill to have in our current job market. I can apply the skill into many fields and could’ve even been a consultant. You really just need to know how to market your skills and yourself.

looking back at it now, i definitely went out a lot more compared to previous years LOL i had some struggles in january, and at multiple points in my life i blamed myself for being ungrateful, for seeking more when i already had so much in life compared to other people. my friends were there for me and i wouldnt have been able to live through it without them. then again, during reading break in february, i got myself into the same hot mess and i was sad about it for a week and i blamed myself for getting so attached so quickly. because of these experiences, my expectations were v low and i didnt really expect anything when i talked to jyang, what they say really is true, you get it the moment you stop seeking for it. it comes and find you (: the 3 most important that happened this year is burbur, co op job & me getting more comfortable around doggs; this is a big deal !! i actually like cuddling dogs and i feel less scared of them as long as i have some time to get used to them!! im proud of myself for making progress with my phobia! after i started my co op job, bc i didnt have a lot to do, i felt like i wasnt actively contributing to my workplace and that i was very useless. i still feel the same way now, but i think i am slowly getting used to it. thankfully, my coworkers are VERY nice and i enjoy working around them. while i did not get a different position for january, im still grateful that i got an extended placement. nonetheless, meeting with the different PIs and sumeet pointed me in the right direction of looking for nserc / volunteering opportunities when i do go back to school. AND ofc burbur! im grateful that we were able to be there for each other for the past 8 months, both the ups and downs and i am so so thankful that we’re understanding and patient with each other, as we help each other learn along the way and help each other become a better version of ourselves. this companionship is better than i have asked for and i always remind myself to focus on the important things rather than the minor inconveniences. this year, in terms of fitness goals, ive been doing really well before asia. but ever since i came back, it all went downhill and i gained back all the weight that i lost this year year LOL so in 2020, one of my biggest goal is to eat healthy again, and workout more consistently. getting a job in sept kinda interfered with my progress too, bc i was so tired after work, even when i wasnt doing anything and i stressed eat bc i felt terrible. a lot of diff factors made me feel super stressed, and the fact that i wasnt eating clean / exercising reguarly made me feel worse about the whole situation ): so in 2020, maintaining a healthy lifestyle will be one of my top priorities and gifting myself a healthy body is one of greatest things i can do for myself. this also contributed to the lack of journalling near the end of the year, it felt like bc i wasnt doing the things i was “supposed to do”, i just felt so bad whenever i couldnt tick off that particular habit whenever i fill in my trackers. but tonight, i watched this video and it talked about habits should be for awareness, not for self-hate or self-loathing. this is something that i need to keep in mind. ever since april really, the issue of leaving my house and meeting up with my friends have always stressed me in fear of dealing with passive aggressiveness with my mom lool everytime i get inviited to plans, i just get anxiety about having to tell her about it LOL and even when im out, having a msg/ call for her freaks me out in fear that she will get mad at me for being home late and etc and fifi really woke me up with her words, i should just care less LOL i need to stop caring so much about what she thinks, bc at the end of the day, this IS my life and if i never make any changes, i will never be able to grow and be independent. i think this pree much sums up all my events and emotions in 2019, the last year of the 2010s. in the next decade, a lot of things will happen as i will be in my 20s - 30s, where new opportunities will arise, and graduate uni, do my masters, find a job, maybe even marry and move out LOL the 2020s will definitely be an impt decade, but just for next year i want to:
1. understand that i am old enough to make choices, and in general, care less about what she thinks
2. at the same time, i want to appreciate and be grateful for what my mom, dad and annie have done for me; a lot of the times, i feel like i take them for granted just bc i know they will always be there for me and this is not how you should treat your biggest supporters
3. trust that everything will workout in the end, while you may not be able to envision what you career / life would be like when youre 30, you can definitely take small steps and move towards your goal
4. be mindful of what i eat and exercise regularly (4x hiit & cardio a week) ; treats & sweets in moderation; use those habit trackers for awareness, not for self-loathing / self-hate
5. create art regularly, read more and at least do 5 duolingos every week!
every year, time just seems to go by faster and faster and i feel scared at times. as i type this, theres only 8 minutes left of this decade LOL so in 2020, continue to live in the moment, be present, cherish those that are around you, and have faith that everything will come together, one piece at a time. at the same time, always rmb that you can make small changes to be a better version of yourself, whenever & however you want and this is the 1 thing that other people can’t stop you from doing!

My expectations for a good undergraduate-level education in mathematics:
Good grounding in proof techniques and an introduction to formal proofs
can be combined with a particular topic, often topology or analysis
should be very early in your studies to get the most benefit
Introduction to broad areas of mathematics
topology (nice to have before calculus since it provides another way of thinking about continuity)
analysis (complex, real, manifolds, etc.)
algebra (groups and fields at a minimum)
combinatorics or number theory or graph theory (so you're forced to deal with at least one construct that does not relate to vector spaces)
Study of more specialized kinds of calculation
calculus and diff-eq (nice to do this after/alongside analysis)
linear algebra (applied manifolds)
statistics (if you're lucky you get some measure theory here)
numerical methods, linear programming (if you feel the siren call of computer science)
The first category, I would expect your typical fresh student to take two semesters with: the first semester to internalize that there is more to mathematics than calculation and the second semester to actually learn how to write proofs. If you're already comfortable with the idea then this can be accelerated to one semester in which you're practicing the forms.
In the second and third categories, each of their four subareas can easily take two semesters of work so you're probably looking at two years (each) unless you want to get particularly aggressive. Typically students will prune more of the advanced topics from the second category if they want an applied degree or prune the third category if they want a more theoretical degree.
For a graduate-level, I'd expect to condense all of the above into three or four semesters with either the less advanced topics dropped (for those who've already studied mathematics) or some subcategories dropped (for those who haven't). Then a trailing semester to perform research.

NEET stands for National Eligibility Entrance Test. Formerly, it was known as the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT). Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), it is the qualifying exam for MBBS (Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Medicine) and BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) programs in Indian Medical and Dental colleges. The assessment of this exam is led by NTA, an autonomous association set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). The results of the exams are then provided to the Directorate General of Health Services under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and State Counseling Authorities so as to allocate the seats to the qualifying students. GUADEC Conference Summary 2018
GNOME Users and Developers Europe Conference 2018
Table of Blog Contents:
Cool Stuff from the GNOME Advisory Board Meeting
Topics From the Conference Talks
Lightning Talks
The Good Stuff: Projects from the Unconference Workshops
Advisory Board Meeting This was our first year attending GNOME’s Users and Developers Conference in Europe. Before the conference start, we were scheduled to attend the GNOME Foundation Advisory Board meeting. We were excited to meet the other board members from the community and learn about their current projects, especially to learn if there was any overlap on projects that we could collaborate together on. The other board members include representatives from: GNOME, Debian, Private Internet Access, Canonical, Endless, Red Hat, Suse, Free Software Foundation, and The Document Foundation.

^ Coolest group of people.
During this meeting, GNOME shared some of the list of upcoming conferences and projects, including:
UX Hackfest, November 2018
GNOME Asia (user focused), August 11-13 Taipei
Libre Application Summit (LAS) GNOME, Sept 6-9 Denver → Hosting this. Let’s elevate Linux apps!
Outreachy → get more people involved
FOSDEM, Feb 2019 Brussels
GUADEC (developer focused), 2019
Since Libre App Summit is in Denver, they’re hoping we can give a tour of the manufacturing space. Hopefully the space is ready to present to the public by then.
Gitlab
GNOME also talked about their switch to Gitlab. Their GNOME Director of Operations said, “..And [GNOME] did this before switching to Gitlab ‘was considered cool.’” Here is a video that GNOME and Gitlab made together about their partnership:
youtube
General
Talks of keeping a list of hackfest spaces available on a website so that developers know hackerspaces local to them. We loved this idea!
Talks to promote desktop remote work experience - Have Linux supersede in remote work capabilities.
GNOME presented their board information during the GUADEC conference as well:
youtube
Conference Talks
The talks overall were general updates about various pieces of the GNOME ecosystem, and what different individuals had been working on in the past year. Here are some talks that stood out:
The future of GTK
This status update focused on what’s coming next with GTK4 with regards to themability, app menus, new widgets, and more. There are several new widgets coming that we’re excited to try out, including the GtkPicture and GtkVideo widgets; we can definitely see a place for them providing rich graphics and animations throughout Pop!_OS, like in our installer, for example. The information about porting from GTK3 to GTK4 was also helpful, since we now maintain and ship a number of GTK3 apps in Pop!_OS.
Tests, profiling, and debugging Nautilus:
Tests help find performance issues, regressions, easier debugging, and finding memory leaks. Started by looking at sync vs async, modularity, refactoring for readability, etc.
GNOME Usage:
Interested in power management in Linux. “Batteries are efficient, but they’re not smart enough.” Usage is designed to tell its users (i.e. developers) what hardware and software is responsible for battery usage. Windows uses “Battery engine,” Android handles via kernel, and iOS also tracks it. Prospective design from Allan Day includes a chart of usage over time. [email protected]
Librehunt: A website to help you choose a Linux distro. To help users new to Linux. https://gitlab.com/aviwad/librehunt
How to take over GNOME:
GUADEC helped Tobias (of Purism) start contributing. He started working on design projects (Todo, Fractal, App Menu), and then was hired by Purism to work on Librem 5. Kind of an interesting case study.
Freedesktop-sdk, the future of Linux runtimes (Aud)
This is all about FreeDesktop.org efforts for cross-distro and cross-desktop compatibility, something that will become increasingly important as we tailor the UX of Pop!_OS while leaning on the GNOME and Open Source community for applications and tools.
Building the Libre Desktop Computer
We gave a talk about building the libre computer, explaining what a computer containing all open parts could create for the future of open source. We presented where we’re at in launching the desktop. This is our first time announcing details on the open desktop to the public. The talk is viewable on Youtube.
You can subscribe to receive updates on the open computer at: https://thel.io/
youtube
Lightning Talks
-Our UX Architect, Cassidy Blaede, presented on technical vs. social problems in app design. This is a talk that he wants to expand on for the LAS conference taking place in Denver this September.
-Daniel Foré of elementary gave a talk on thinking about “the user as your romantic partner.” Advices product designers/developers to apply dating advice when engaging their users.
-Robert Ancell shared his work on a fun robot project for kids by making a Raspberry Pi based Python IDE that runs over SSH—the UI is done entirely in the TTY, and so you can remote into the robot and do all the coding directly. It was a pretty stark contrast to the gamified code learning tools we’ve seen from other people, and really demonstrated that there are different effective approaches to teaching kids how to use these powerful tools.
-Britt gave a talk about being an audiologist PhD student using all sorts of open source software and 3D printed research parts—he mentioned that the big “med tech” companies are so proprietary that it’s common for medical students and researchers to default to open tools instead. This really validates what we’re doing with Pop!_OS and was really cool to hear straight from someone in the field.
-Robin from Endless had one of the most popular lightning talks. She presented a walkthrough of UX testing and design practices, and how those methods can and should change throughout the development cycle. She plans to present a full-length version of her talk at LAS conference in Denver, and we can’t wait to hear it!
Workshops and New Projects Derived from Conference
GTK BoF:
Following up on the GTK talk, we attended the GTK BoF and workshop. It was mostly focused on release planning and low-level implementation ideas, but still valuable. There’s some new diff-based frame redrawing and other optimizations that should be good for performance and power consumption, which is always important to us.
Multiple Displays BoF:
BoF on this topic can be found at the GUADEC Wiki. We hosted a conversation about how we can improve the multi-displayexperience in Mutter, Shell, and Settings. Some suggestions from the discussion included looking into contextual feature options that detect the type of display, for example: a projector detection could enable a “Presentation Mode,” possibly including the Do-Not-Disturb feature that we debuted in Pop!_OS. We also talked about upstreaming much of the work we’re doing in the HiDPI Daemon to Mutter itself, and we were thrilled to hear that Marco had been exploring similar work in Mutter already. We look forward to collaborating closer with the GNOME and Mutter folks in these areas.
Action Items for the team:
DavidJordan record how the current daemon works
Work with/talk to JonasAdahl about the Mutter-level things we could work on
CassidyJames research customers, synthesize data, and work with GNOME Design team on the future
Theming & Ecosystem BoF:
How do we improve user experience despite different themes, multiple apps? The goal of this talk was to discuss how to provide a predictable platform for developers to build on. Complete notes on the talk are available on the wiki.
While we track GNOME changes very closely and are constantly dogfooding the Pop! stylesheet, a proposed standardized theming API for Adwaita could deliver more guarantees about things not breaking in third-party apps and between major Pop!_OS releases. The GNOME design team wants to hear from downstreams like Ubuntu and Pop!_OS about what sorts of things we theme, and how it differs compared to Adwaita. We plan to work together to figure out the best way forward.
Some GNOME designers are also working on a new icon style that looks much more modern in visual style while not clashing so much with general popular third-party apps (like the slightly flatter Firefox, Spotify, VS Code, etc.). Incidentally, this new GNOME icon style looks much closer to Pop!_OS icons, which could lead to some interesting things in the future. Stay tuned!
Action Items for the team:
Reach out to Tobias to follow up with GNOME Design and Adwaita team.
We are looking forward to making progress on these projects with the community. We are hoping to reconnect with some folks at Libre Application Summit this September. We’ll keep you posted! In the meantime, we hope to see you at LAS!

“Transsexing is an act of healing”
again I know Hayward has delimited a scope for this (above) --
but it seems insufficient. and i don’t know how exactly we’d differentiate transgressive potentiality from regenerative animation
dysphoria / euphoria — not sure how this maps on — not all transgressive potentialities are euphoric, not every response to dysphoria is regenerative …
and dysphoria is not always localized in/on the body — obviously that’s the intensity we’re trained to see : looking in the mirror, at the jawline, which can be cut, but also the shoulders, the feet, the hands, the entire build of the body — in the latter case dysphoria is a response to what seems immutable — not ever available for healing or regeneration — a structural impossibility —
and, to speak autobiographically, i’d say too that dysphoria can act more like an absent or retroactive cause than a symptom properly speaking — as in, healing (an “act”?) might have to take place before the symptom can make it to the surface — not always as articulate as “being in the wrong body” — sometimes too it’s just “wrong” — a sense of wrongness — and sometimes even that can’t be felt as such except in retrospect —
especially if dysphoria is dissociative — it seems like that may be a more common symptom but it’s one that can only be apprehended as such when you’re not enveloped in it — not feeling real only comes out as the problem when you come to and your reality starts to lay its film out (on the eye, in the nose) — layers sift out — where before everything was muted, behind glass, etc. — dissociation is like that -- it’s less like regeneration and more like coming up for air —
i think that’s actually what Hayward means by regeneration though: regeneration of the senses — via the flesh, “meat” (???) — why meat? — dead meat, meat market, white meat (an alternative to “flesh,” which seems more specific to racialized embodiment, at least in critical discourse -- “meat” has a feminist political resonance -- men treat us like meat, therefore we’re this kind of subject: visceral corruption, fakeness and hence disposability, subject to avid devoration and just as vicious disgust-- a ripped apart, flayed, delinked, tender (smooth) or tough (muscular) object of consumption -- also the animal studies angle obviously: “trans women” the other other white meat -- in short: meat is feminizing where flesh is racializing -- trans women is in quotes bc both Jules and Torrey point out the false presumption in that term that white trans women and trans women of color necessarily share a coherent set of experiences, much less a coalescent political subjectivity) — marked out by transition —
anyway though: if dysphoria is dissociative (disabling but not in a way that’s apparent to anyone else and maybe not to yourself either: they/you just think you’re shy, or you’re overcompensating, or you’re abrasive — whatever your particular disorder/cope is) then the response to it is not quite regenerative bc regeneration presumes something cut off and i guess in dissociation you are cut off from some kind of relationality, some kind of reality — yet it doesn’t seem cut off until you’re healing (so to speak) —
i guess i just mean to appreciate Hayward’s emphasis on a kind of regeneration without wholeness (originary or teleological) — and at the same time wonder if transsexing, as a revelation of dysphoria, (maybe through euphoria: maybe just through changed conditions), puts wholeness more radically in question — bc not only can it operate without any presumption of ideal wholeness (as origin or destination) — a suspension — but it may also depart from or involute the timeline that connects origin / destination — insofar as the symptom comes out after its regeneration
i am also thinking here about Arielle Scarcella (a lesbian youtube terf / trump endorser) and how she thinks that young trans ppl trick themselves into being trans and then get dysphoria from the transition process — obviously her political aim is retrograde but dysphoria is complex -- it may not seem to exist before an alternative is lived
again i have to insist: dysphoria isn’t actually an individual symptom anyway — it’s a response to interpellation, to an unbearable form of subject formation, a refusal or inability to respond to the incitements to inhabit your assigned sex —
assignment is not anatomical but normative — a developmental projection only loosely tethered to the genital trait it claims anchorage in — only loosely in part bc the genital only rly becomes a sex organ later, after genitalization or at puberty (pick your poison)
so there is an impasse or insufficiency in modeling the individual trans body onto the individual starfish body — and to say that “regeneration” is about healing that body — this is more fully addressed in the spider article but it’s important to stress that regeneration is kind of impossible without some kind of “building-out” (as Hayward puts it) — an architectural support — a relational field — and regeneration also means exposing yourself to further damage — not just “redressing harm” but accepting (or not accepting — just putting up with, living with) a certain level of vulnerability to harm in order to move out of the unbearable —
dysphoria isn’t an individual condition and it’s also not as acute as the “cut” in the song — it may also be accretive, built up — it may be a chronic condition, or an episodic susceptibility — dissociative episodes — recurrent
as for euphoria: a diff question — futural — infinitizing — also self-evaporating — rather than reparative — euphoria associated with falseness — false pleasure, false elation, false looking forward to an increasingly abundant future — false anticipation of the endlessness of growth — a speculative mood — yet weirdly too it can be what allows you to feel your happiness at all — as in: euphoria is “wellbeing” but that’s background unless something picks it up and makes it overwhelming — sometimes you’re happy and you don’t know it — and euphoria takes you by surprise when it comes into relief — the relief of how much better it feels — an art of living that’s not just bearable but feels perfectible and extensive — (delusive or nonendless as that feeling may turn out to have been)
i suppose you could say euphoria and dysphoria exist in some kind of dialectical relationship — i don’t think that’s the logic, because they’re more intermittent (not a spiraling momentum, necessarily) — but you could say that the infinitizing tendency of euphoria confronts dysphoria not just as a corporeal (anatomical) limit but also as an external screen — that is to say, the screen of others’ perceptions — as that which defines corporeal limits —
again whiteness is crucial: as transparency, individuating possibility of infinite self-extension — all trans bodies are subject to some degree of overdetermination from without (the dysphoric overdetermination of cis criteria) — but obvs race changes how the body is sexed — so too how it’s transsexed, transspeciated
last point: transspeciation for Hayward is a condition of biochemical transfer -- Premarin, an estrogen taken from horse urine -- what this opens up for question though is the synthetic -- what kind of transfer is that? esp. when it’s supposed to be bioidentical?

The Emotionally Intelligent Investor (2012)
Develop skills like a chess master — they use gut intuition to pick a move and then check it against their rational risk framework to identify problems
We are hardwired to avoid shame and its cousin regret. Learn strategies to minimize or embrace these—like small lotto ticket positions, trimming when you are tempted to sell too early
Learn to really be happy proving yourself wrong, recognizing an error or disproving a theory, for instance be proud when you find a mistake before you lose money on it
Be careful with spreadsheets and projections - they become too real. Don’t get overly detailed
Keep a trading journal. Practice identifying your emotions as they come, which is a rare skill in itself. Track your emotions and thoughts to help you understand your risk appetite and make more balanced decisions. Track missed opportunities as well as disasters avoided. Interrogate what risk means to you over time.
You are most emotionally vulnerable on a name when you are near break even, because the emotional diff between +/- is so large.
Play is important for self-discovery — elites do it in all fields. Scrimmages, sketching, play acting
Treat “value” (contrarian, trend-reversing) and “growth” (fundamental/price trend-following) differently and use different frameworks.
Uses stop losses on stocks where a growth investing framework should be used. Only willing to take large % losses on stocks where he’s making highly contrarian bets. Asks himself regularly (weekly) whether he’s using the right playbook for each stock in book.
For value investments, set a buy-it-now price and be willing to dollar-cost average there. Also be willing to take losses, but set a timeframe over which you expect momentum to reverse. Do not dollar cost average in growth/momentum investments (ie once the name gets working for a while and has been exceeding estimates) — sell or trim down to core at the first sign of trouble
If performing well/beating expectations/expectations are for beats / >150d MA / 150d MA rising —> growth playbook. If opposite —> value.
If you can’t figure out which playbook to use (stuck in the middle?) often best to spend your time elsewhere
Speculating on a growth stock regaining momentum is dangerous!
Visualize what can go wrong - see all the ways the boulder can roll down the hill. Practice believing outlandish future scenarios (EZ breakup, USD:JPY at 100, etc)
Optimize for 70% of information - like Colin Powell says, any more than that prob means you spent too long. Uncertainty drives opportunities, embrace it!
Druckenmiller would occasionally sell his entire book to flat to reset things for him & his analysts — clean sheet of paper is very freeing
Personality assessment test —marketpsych.com/personality_test.php
Use your own fear to know when the right time to buy is. Mark Cook reasoned when he was scared other market participants were likely at least as scared as he was and therefore it was probably a good time to buy
7 questions before putting on a trade
What does current shareholder base look like? Value/anti-momentum/LT or growth/momo/ST? High SI? Does mgmt own a lot? Value won’t care as much about bad news, growth less likely to buy a miss and may even sell
What are longer term shareholders thinking and feeling?
What are the recent shareholders thinking and feeling?
Who is the potential buyer of the stock (value or growth) and what are they thinking/feeling?
What is the potential short seller thinking and feeling?
(If stock has a high SI) what are those already short thinking and feeling? Likely to cover or press?
What is management thinking and feeling?
Can be analyzed through TA, surveys, questions on calls, talking to mgmt, studying investor base changes, investor convos
Consider creative issues like the fact that quarter end is coming up and investors may not want to show a loser on the books and have to defend it to investors
Investors often act to avoid shame rather than rationally to gain — this is classic prospect theory!!
Prior resistance become support because of the association bias (buying there worked before, people will tend to buy the dip). Basically you buy breakouts because the R/R range has just flipped
Key tenets of technical analysis:
resistance, breakouts above resistance, support, and breakdowns below support. They work because they tell you at a glance average/aggregate positioning and PNL of shareholders — incredibly valuable info
Higher highs & higher lows = investors sell to realize gains but positive enough to buy back higher than before
Worsening breadth = topping market; improving breadth = bottoming. Because win:loss ratio is key to investor emotions and happiness/sadness drive risk appetite/aversion
Bull markets end when the leading stocks underperform. Eg Internet in 2000. Most exposed investors begin underperforming and reduce risk appetite
Ends of bull/bear market periods often have one last extreme leg up/down, driven by hysteria. FOMO and career risk are the dominant emotions, respectively.
Prices decline faster than they rise. “Stocks take the stairs up, elevator down”. Associates it with prospect theory where people feel a loss of Y 2x as much as a gain of Y
Use short-term overbought/oversold indicators like RSI to help with timing
Equivocal: volume often very telling around inflection points
150 day MA = rough approximation of the market’s cost basis for the stock (PC speculation: because 150 trading days = ~6 months or average current hold period)
When interviewing management, be attuned to details. Even trying not to take notes can be useful to help you focus on non-verbal communication from execs. Watch facial reactions, stress responses, face touching, eye contact — all can indicate untruths or stress. Ask questions that challenge them to admit true motivations and weaknesses. Best execs have a short term focus when things are going poorly and long term when things going well (Jobs did this). Notice if they take blame for things not in their control, avoid blame for bad decisions, dismiss legitimate risks or speak too positively about the future when NT is bad. Saying “probably/virtually/basically/fundamentally” or being overly reliant on jargon/technical mumbo-jumbo is a classic tell as well. Buying time with “great question” or “I’m glad you asked that” also notable.
When considering an investment, talk to people long/short/uninvolved and try to empathize with what each is feeling and why they are saying what they’re saying
Analyst’s job in a meeting is to learn, not to impress. Be present!
Intuition comes from pattern recognition. Experience leads to certain mental maps and patterns being formed.
Research (on sports) shows novices do better when they think through things mechanically, and experts do better when they really on feeling and intuition rather than overthinking. This is a problem for professional investors who need to be taken seriously by bosses/clients/regulators. Can be an opportunity — investors like Peter Lynch started with gut (Eg liked donuts at DNKN) but fewer operate that way now, more reliant on screening or pure quant
Pay attention when you hear a pitch and it resonates with you immediately — often a sign of something meaningful.
Focus on ST track record when evaluating short-term traders and opposite for long term investors.
Ability of chess grandmasters can’t actually see much farther into the future than weaker players—at least, it’s not what drives elite play (Kasparov). Use their gut. Great moves may come to them intuitively, but most of their playing time is spent evaluating the risk of the move.
Steps for using intuition (safely!). This is basically a soup-nuts process in itself
Only valuable when you have ample experience (retail investor investing in biotech)
Be aware of biases. Tough thing about intuition is separating the good/bad feeling from a potential positive/negative emotional bias. Biases are different from intuition and not good. Practice intuition, especially making it more explicit so it can be analyzed rationally. “I hate that stock” is diff from “I hate that setup”
Try to determine if an investment reminds you of a specific previous situation. That determines IF you can rely on gut feelings. Use pattern recognition, note similarities and differences as best as you can.
Analyze the fundamentals and risk/reward characteristics of the security.
Expose your ideas to the criticism of others. “More doubt is the last thing you want when you are in trouble”. This is also where a partner comes in handy — they know your history/experience too and can help you avoid pitfalls.
Maintain openness to changing your mind, and set tripwires. Trip wire = event that should not occur if your thesis/intuition is right.
Use the process. Chessmaster’s process is to use gut and risk evaluation in a loop, following the process iteratively until he comes up with a move he feels good about and is logically acceptable. They make the game come to them in a way that their competencies are best utilized.
Kasparov in “How Life Imitates Chess” — secret to success in most endeavors is relentless review of prior decisions and focused practice on areas that require improvement.
Example of things he looks for at cyclical bottoms (this example specifically from semis): Retail indication that demand is stabilizing or even turning positive —> Significant inventory out of the supply chain —> merger activity where large companies buying smaller ones for cash —> insider buying —> cuts to capex (lead indicator on low supply growth) —> high pessimism from market participants —> stocks not reacting badly to bad news anymore (like a quarterly miss)
Problems with the intuitive approach: randomness plays a role in investing (so focus on reviewing process, not just outcomes), intuitions go obsolete (certain patterns get arbed away over time if they really work)
Suggest pre-mortems involving visualization. Eg he owns EQIX, imagines it falling 40%, thinks about how he would feel about it and what could have caused such a decline. In this case, he thinks it’s increasing competition/pricing pressure or risky management decisions like a big acquisition. Feels better prepared to sense danger and exit decisively when the time comes, or to buy a dip more confidently. Can also help you realize you’re taking too much risk — if you can imagine a number of ways you lose 50% and that loss would make you uncomfortable taking appropriate risks in the future, you are probably sizing the position too aggressively relative to R/R. Since he recognizes as a person he most values financial freedom, he also does this with his minimum net worth — constantly imagines scenarios that would cause him to fall below the MNW he’s decided on, and adjusted the risks he’s taking accordingly. Often limits potential upside, but that’s a trade-off he’s willing to make given his personal motivations. PTJ does this (allegedly for an hour a night), picturing huge moves in oil or USD, how it would impact his portfolio and what it would mean — wants to be more prepared when unexpected news hits.
Basically his thesis is trading success requires recognizing and taking advantage of the mistakes of others. This requires empathy. Emotional intelligence is the rare skill in that it can be grown with practice as an adult.
Firms should screen for personality traits more than they do when recruiting, focusing on whether the candidate has the right temperament for that fund’s style of investing (trend-following or contrarian?).
Structural problem in funds is reliance on junior team members for idea generation and initial work when they have the least-developed gut instincts.
Investing by committee doesn’t work. Hard to get a large group to agree on something contrarian, and it’s just not able to move fast enough. Key decisions ought to be made by 1-2 people. Meetings are more useful as sounding boards than as consensus-building exercises. Group discussions often cause people to line up behind the most out-spoke — one way to combat this is having people write down their opinions/thoughts before anyone speaks.
Be on the lookout for intuition obsolescence — stop doing what doesn’t work. Losses on situations that appear very similar to past successes are a red flag for possible obsolescence.
Most firms operate as if people have an unlimited capacity to process information (respond to emails/IMs/phones, watch tickers and the news all day). Quiet thinking time allows for for reviewing prior decisions and mental simulations. It is the key to turning experience into intuition, and that requires the right environment, including cultural focus on stress reduction.
Takeaways
This book was much better than I expected from a self-published investor book with a relatively lofty name. It’s basically a really great overview of process, complete with ideas for self-reflection that can help you build your own. It’s the sort of thing you’d want to give a junior analyst on their first day in a public markets seat. I have read a little on technical analysis in the past and used it for years but this was the best explanation I’ve ever read of why it works.
It made me want to re-start keeping a journal—I kept one for years but stopped when it became too much of a time suck, and because it had gotten too much into tracking all of the day’s news rather than reasoning/feelings.
(From the intuition checklist) — May even be worth putting a step in your work/pitch process that asks — what previous situation does this most remind me of, if any? What playbook am I using here: value/growth, but also which situation am I mimicking here and is that a good thing (this is highly likely to play out similarly) or a bad thing (I’m anchoring too much)?

The Cardio Kinesiograph System
Authored by *
Abstract
The Cardio Kinesiograph System (CKinG) is a novel computerized diagnostic system incorporating a computer model of cardiac kinesis. Cardiac Kinesis (CK) is the interpretation of heart movement or electrical activity of specialized cardiac muscle cells in response to biochemical reactions. The mechanical events occurring during the cardiac cycle consist of changes in pressure in the ventricular chamber which cause(s) blood to move in and out of the ventricle [1]. The events of the cardiac cycle start with an electrical signal and proceed through excitation-contraction coupling (which involves chemical and mechanical events) to contraction of the ventricle (pressure generation) and ejection of blood (flow) into the pulmonary and systemic circulations [2]. Thus, we can characterize the cardiac cycle by tracking changes in ventricular volume (LVV), ventricular pressure (LVP), left atrial pressure (LAP) and aortic pressure (AoP) [3]. In the other hand, because electrical events always precede mechanical events in the cardiac cycle, distortions of a part or parts of the electrical signal have been used as diagnostic indicators of both electrical and mechanical dysfunctions of the heart muscle [4]. There are numerous methods and technical systems available for diagnosis or predict heart disease. However, medical errors and undesirable results [5] in these systems are reasons for a need for conventional computer-based diagnosis of heart diseases systems. The purpose of this study is to design and develop a system that can observe and analyze Kinesiographical Cardiac basted on statistical models and identifies some fundamental characteristic of heart motions.
Keywords: Cardiovascular biomechanics; Statistical analysis methods; Medical heart imaging modalities; DNA modelization in biomedical image
Introduction
Since 1950 cardiologists have studied the functions of heart moments to employ them in the diagnostics of ischemic heart disease (IHD). Indeed, changes of the movements have found their diagnostic application in this field. If blood supply to a certain area of ventricular myocardium is insufficient the con-tractions in this area diminish and even ceases. After systolic increase in ventricular pressure this area dilates and forces intercostal tissues out, causing a “bulge” wave on the record.
Cardiokymography was one of several noninvasive techniques able to detect coronary artery disease. It can qualitatively determine abnormal left ventricular motion, and, based on animal models, this can be directly related to abnormalities in the left coronary artery [7]. Nevertheless sensitivity of cardiokymography in detecting patients with ischaemic left ventricular wall motion abnormalities depended on the extent of left ventricular ischaemia [8]. Cardiokymography is no longer valid [9]. Today Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) is one of the trusted methods in the field of medicine [10]. Advances in medical imaging and image processing techniques have greatly enhanced interpretation of medical images. Computer aided diagnosis (CAD) systems based on these techniques play a vital role [11] in the early detection of cardiovascular diseases and hence reduce death rate. CAD is the most preferable method for the initial diagnosis of heart disease. The combination of Digital and Medical Image Pro-cessing, Cardiac Electrophysiology, Ventricular Pressure-Volume Technique and Phonocardiogram etc makes the CAD system more reliable and efficient. One example of the medical applications in computer aided diagnosis is the detection system for heart disease based on Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR). Cardiovascular magnetic resonance of the heart provides a potentially useful way to assess cardiac mechanical function. Besides CMR, positron emission tomography (PET), and cardiac CT are able to illustrate kinesis of cardiac muscles. Perfusion imaging with cardiac PET is used clinically to produce images of myocardial blood flow, aiding the diagnosis of coronary artery disease and the monitoring of condition of coronary circulation in response to treatment [12].
Clinical imaging in positron emission tomography (PET) is often performed using single-time-point estimates of tracer uptake or static imaging that provides a spatial map of regional tracer concentration [13]. However, dynamic cardiac techniques (e.g. PET, Myocardial perfusion imaging and Dynamic cardiac SPECT [14]) are used to estimate rate parameters activity of myocardial blood flow, and there are limited studies evaluating the role of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and cardiac PET and cardiac CT for the assessment of cardiac kinesis. Therefore, scientific communities in computational cardiovascular science [15] have contributed to developing mathematical models and algorithms to improve efficiency of cardiac safety data management in clinical trials. In this way in 2014 proposed a new method based on a mathematical model, “Fourier Transform” which calculates an amplitude parametric image for the assessment of cardiac kinetics. This image, calculated from the Cine MR images, allows the localization and quantification of abnormalities related to difference in contraction and their extent [16]. In 2015 Zakynthinaki [17] has also presented effective mathematical model of heart rate kinetics in response to movement. She made conclusion that the new model is able not only to provide important information regarding an individual’s cardiovascular condition but to also simulate and predict heart rate kinetics for any given exercise intensities. The existing models of cardiac kinetics focus mainly on amplitude images or are limited to simulation of biological transformation. The present study provides a novel mathematical model of cardiac kinesis based on visual presentation of numerical data (obtained through the cardiac kinesis) in the form of graph, with a particular focus on Human Cardio Kinesiograph Analysis. The purpose of this study was to de-sign, develop and evaluate a novel method for Kinesiograph of Cardiac for the clinical assessment of cardiac and vascular function.
Methods and Materials
The system includes the following steps:
Data collection: In order to obtain an accurate data, the Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance imaging (CMR), Cardiovascular Ultrasound or Cardiac Computed Tomography are produced better performances for detection of cardiac mobility. However, CMR is provided the most comprehensive anatomic picture for patient selection [18]. The system therefore is obtained relevant information from the CMR.
Video quality assessment: Different medical imaging methods may introduce common artifacts include image distortion, signal pileup (bright regions), and image dropout (area without signal) [19], therefore the quality assessment is an important factor at the operational level. The assessment of quality of video depends upon the type of distortion [20]. Numerous video quality assessment methods and metrics have been proposed over the past years with varying computational complexity and accuracy [21]. We utilize different forms of quality assessment methods, however the merit of these methods is often judged by assessing the quality of a set of results through lengthy user studies [22].
Motion estimation and inertial measurements: Motion estimation is the process of determining the movement of blocks between adjacent video frames (MathWorks). Efficient and accurate motion estimation is an essential component in the domains of image sequence analysis [23] and medical video processing. The estimation of motion is also important from the viewpoint of matching metric technique, which is computed the context similarity between two images. There exist several methods for motion estimation image, and video processing (e.g. pixel-based motion estimation, block-based motion estimation, optical flow method). In this study in order to increase the computational accuracy and improve efficiency in solving problem, DNA Modeling (Dawoudi, 2017) method in biomedical image matching has been proposed. The method is based on the linear mapping and the one-to-one correspondences between point features extracted from the frames and on calculating similarities in pixel values. This correspondence is determined by comparing two strings constructed from pixel values of the frames. The method uses a table called the Quarter Code table, which is the set of characters and numbers. In this table every number between 0 and 255 is translated into a unique string of four letter alphabet. Letters A,C,G,T are chosen, since they are the same as used in DNA sequences. In this way it possible to utilize tools originally programmed to DNA sequences analysis. When all pixel values of the frames (images) are converted to virtual DNA sequences, one can show the differences between two virtual DNA sequences.
Visual representation of numerical data in the form of graphs: The E-value gives a measure of the similarity of sequences. From this function we can obtain the correlation coefficient which will give us a single value of similarity. The rate of similarity between sequences (frames) is plotted as a graph and it’s appearing in the Monitor.
Experiment Results
We demonstrate the system by performing experiment 2D cardiac CMR video (Source: HBSNS library). The practical framework consists of four steps:
A. Step 1: Extract frames from cardiac mri video
The information is obtained by extracting frames from CMR imaging video. There are different tools in order to extract frames from cardiac MRI Video (e.g. Free Video to JPG Converter, VLC or Virtual Dud) (Figure 1).
B. Step 2: Adjacent frames comparisons
The difference between two adjacent frames is used to estimate motion direction and magnitude. This process has been implemented within a tool called Image Diff. The Perforce image diff tool enables researchers to compare two adjacent frames. The following represents pixels difference value (Percent Changed; Pixels) and color difference value (Percent Change; Color) between adjacent Frames (Table 1).
C. Step 3: Presenting data in graphic form
In the final step the percentage of change (pixels and color) from one value to another, between frames are plotted as a graph (Figure 2 & 3).
Results
The results show that the proposed design approach works efficiently in the Cardio Kinesis System for clinical applications of cardiovascular assessment.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the proposed Cardio Kinesiograph System (CKinG) may become a robust and efficient tool for the clinical assessment of Cardiac and Vascular function. CKinGbased Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) holds the promise of improving the diagnosis accuracy and reducing the cost.
Discussion
The developed system can be used as a prototype in the clinical sectors for the evaluation of cardiovascular diseases. However, a novel method for real time MRI of cardiac kinesis and simultaneously Kinesiographical Cardiac Analysis Based on Statistical Methods are proposed. The proposed methods may become efficient Medical Diagnostic Support tools (DSTs) for Heart Diseases.

Poo and puns: Recent representations of faecal microbiota transplants in English language news media
This post, by Carmen McLeod, Brigitte Nerlich and Rusi Jaspal, has recently been published on the Microbiology Society Blog. We reblog it here with permission.
***
Bacteria, germs, poo…these are words that normally don’t evoke images of health and happiness. The relationship between humans and bacteria is often understood as a combative one. Bacteria are an enemy that must be fought and we have been fighting them for many years. We have been fighting them in the toilets, we have been fighting them in the kitchens and we have been fighting them in hospitals. All the while bacteria have been mounting a resistance to the weaponry – such as antibiotics – we use to fight them. And so, the fight goes on.
This is still a dominant picture of bacteria. But things are changing. Bacteria have had an image make-over since the advent of probiotics and ‘good bacteria’. This more positive view has grown alongside the development of the new research field of microbiomics, which studies all the microorganisms of a given community (a ‘microbiota’) together. But of course, there are still ‘bad bacteria’ around. One of them is Clostridium difficile (or C. diff for short). This bacterium can infect the bowel and lead to serious diarrhoea. It especially affects people (mainly the elderly) who have been treated with antibiotics in hospital settings.
Here is where ‘poo’ comes in, or rather faecal microbiota transplants (FMT). This is the process of transferring stool from a healthy donor, who has a healthy gut microbiome containing good bacteria, to a recipient with a dysfunctional intestinal flora (containing bad bacteria), in order to repopulate their gut microbiome.
FMT has been used in one form or another for a long time, but has only recently made its appearance in official health care settings, especially in the treatment of otherwise intractable cases of C. diff.
Clinicians and scientists are starting to talk about FMT to journalists; journalists and science writers are picking up these stories and patients too are relating their experiences to the media. For our research, we wanted to find out more about this, get a feeling for what conversations people are having about FMT and whether this is changing the ways in which we understand the relationship between humans and bacteria.
To do this, we investigated how English-language newspapers represented FMT between 2003, when the phrase first appeared in English-language news, and 2017. From what we can ascertain, both science and the media began to follow the FMT story more closely from 2013 onwards.
In order to generate a data set of news articles on FMT, we searched for ‘fa(e)cal microbial’, ‘microbiota transplant’ and ‘stool transplant’ on the Nexis® UK news database. ‘Fa(e)cal transplant’ generated an amount suitable for qualitative analysis: 1609 articles – 1547 with duplicates removed. We then focused on ‘newspapers only’, which meant excluding trade publications, websites, magazines etc. This left 612 articles and after duplicates were removed, the remaining overall data consisted of 504 articles [December 24, 2017 search].
We studied these articles using qualitative thematic analysis, paying particular attention to certain forms of language; namely puns, wordplay, metaphor and argument structure, salient topics and events, key actors, and emerging patterns within the data, which clustered especially around the three aspects of FMT: faeces, bacteria/microbes and transplants/donation. We also examined broader themes associated with health and the gut microbiome, in order to uncover emerging social representations.
Our findings show that print media focused in particular on creating novel, mainly hopeful, social representations of faeces through wordplay and punning, side-lining issues of risk and fear. There was, of course, also hype, and future research should pay attention to evolving ‘GutHype’. In our media sample we saw controversy emerging around FMT and obesity. For example, one headline proclaimed “Bowel hope turns to crap” (Sydney MX, Australia, 06/02/2015). Autism featured as one of many hyped-up diseases that FMT is supposed to cure. One article asked “Are gut microbes really a panacea, or just overhyped?” (The Guardian, 2017), and another, in The Globe and Mail, talked about “Poo and woo woo” in a “post-truth” world.
The ‘gut reaction’ to the process of FMT is likely to be one of disgust. Throughout our corpus, this gut reaction was highlighted but also counteracted through various rhetorical strategies, namely punning, strategic use of numbers/science, contrastive storytelling, and the use of ‘but’. For example, a seminal 2013 study on FMT which triggered media attention was reported in Scientific American under the title “The S••t hits the fan!!”. The work of an FMT pioneer Australian doctor, Thomas Borody, attracted a lot of attention and reporters pointed out that his scientific papers include “such titles as Flora Power and Toying with Human Motions. But he is also deadly serious”. Another example of what we call the ‘but strategy’ is the: “The procedure is, of course, messy and odoriferous, but it’s also simplicity itself.”
We also identified changing metaphorical framings of microbes and bacteria from ‘enemies’ to ‘friends’ (“microbial miracle workers”). Additionally, readers are familiarised with FMT through the depiction of the process as being both mundane (“you can now liquidise your partner’s poo in a blender and insert it into your body at home”) and highly medicalised (“pills you pop in the mouth and swallow”).
We argue that emerging media representations have the potential to background the yuck factor and shape more positive social representations of FMT, paving the way for FMT to become a more socially acceptable procedure. Future research can build on this baseline study in order to study how social representations circulate in the wider media and public sphere, online as well as offline, and how they may change over time and differ between countries, as research into FMT progresses.
