SATURDAY NIGHT MUSIC CLUB #78
Superdrag - I'm Expanding My Mind
There's just something about this record...  "Head Trip In Every Key", barely known beyond the band's loyal fan base is the follow up to their hit record "Regretfully Yours" which featured the single "Sucked Out".  If you were alive in the late 90's, you heard it on the radio a bunch, trust me.
While I really like "Regretfully Yours", this record to me holds more water.  While its undoubtedly missing the "radio ready hit single", it has more depth; a solemn sadness so sincere that I can't help but instantly feel for the guy.  There are more upbeat tunes on the record, but this is one that spoke to me most tonight.  I'd also recommend from the same record, "Hellbent", "Do The Vampire", "Amphetamine", "The Art of Dying", & "Annetichrist".
Hope everyone's having a great weekend!  I had a lot of fun on Friday watching the movie with those of you that joined in our little pow-wow.  We ran up those comment numbers, didn't we now?  I'll be playing the show next Friday, but let's invite some more folks into our h'little club next time and see if we can't bring Tumblr down in a fiery binary blaze along with the cyber roof hanging oh so delicately atop our heads.
Also thank you for your kind words and feedback on my latest batch of covers.  I have a lot of fun with them, and it was nice to honor some old friends in the meantime.  I'm really looking forward to this coming week and the festivities of FBR15... Should be a week for the ages!
-----------
Anyways, take a listen to this tune and enjoy something you may not have heard.
Eskimo kisses.

INKtober day 20! My theme: drawing the covers of my favorite records... today, a power-pop masterpiece:
Superdrag - Head Trip in Every Key - 1998
There's two sad things here: one, younger kids today have never heard of (or heard) Superdrag, and two, even if you are aware of them (from their 1996 radio hit "Sucked Out", probably), chances are you may have never heard anything from this record, or subsequent records either. It's a real shame, because Superdrag is a damn fine band!
Why didn't you hear anything from this record? I have no idea. A band that leaned towards a retro sound didn't fit in amongst bands like, you know, CREED. Why listen to something good when you can listen to "My Own Prison" a million times?
(To be fair, while I don't like Creed, I can appreciate the fact that some people do.)
Anyway. This record is amazing. They took all the money their record company would give them and decided to make a very Beatles-esque record, which wasn't a very popular idea at the time. And while the record was a flop and Elektra Records would eventually drop the band, we're all the better for John Davis and company giving us these 13 fantastic songs.
Art note: I'm pretty happy with the pencil shading on her face... I like how the face is rendered by the rest of her is pretty stark.
Favorite track: Shuck & Jive... but I can't find a good link for you, so here's my second favorite track, Sold You An Alibi

did you know that one of the best rock bands of the 90's is straight out of my grossly understated hometown of knoxville, tn?! SUPERDRAG! [no, not supergrass, superdrag (common mistake i made for years)]! the name may not ring as clear in your minds but this band will always be relevant in mine.
isn't "sucked out" the greatest jaded song ever? the whole album regretfully yours is on spotify and you better believe i'm listening to it right now.

Superdrag - Unprepared
On another day Any other day We'd open our eyes You'd be alive
Today's first song on shuffle made me cry in the car on the way to work today.
The past week has been tough for me and unimaginably tougher for some people I care about deeply.
This is Superdrag at their best. Even though the lyrical climax is so devastatingly heartbreaking, it stil comes across as positive and celebratory.
