#Kerala : Union Minister Suresh Gopi Targets Media ; Accuses It Of Misleading Public’s Perception About The Film Industry ; Rocked By Sexual Harassment Allegations

Union Minister Suresh Gopi has lashed out at the media, accusing it of misleading the public’s perception about the film industry regarding the recent allegations of sexual harassment against actors and directors.

The actor-politician termed the allegations as “food” for the media and said they were welcome to make money out of it.

The Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Tourism, however, said they should not try to destroy such a huge industry like cinema.

He was responding to reporters’ queries over the recent allegations of sexual harassment and abuse against various directors and actors, including Communist Party of India-Marxist MLA M Mukesh.

“This is all food for you, is what I understand. You can use it to make money. (There is) no problem with that. But these issues are before the court, and it has the intelligence and logic to arrive at a decision regarding them.

“You (media) are not only making people fight each other for your own gains, you are also misleading public perception. The complaints are in the form of allegations at the moment. What are you telling people? Are you the court? You are not. The court will decide. Let the court decide,” Gopi said.

His response came a day after the Yuva Morcha organised a march towards the residence of Mukesh in Kollam.

The publication of the Justice K Hema Committee report on harassment and abuse in the Malayalam film industry has opened a can of worms with several female actors stepping forward with disturbing accounts of the mistreatment they faced at the hands of their various male counterparts.

Amid these allegations, the government announced the establishment of a seven-member special investigation team to probe the allegations made in the wake of the Hema Committee report being published.

Following that more complaints surfaced against various actors and directors.

Earlier, What caused uproar was the much-awaited Justice Hema Committee report on harassment faced by women in Malayalam cinema industry has recorded explosive accounts of harassment, exploitation and ill-treatment of female professionals, and has alleged that a “criminal gang” was controlling the industry where unyielding women are squeezed out.

The report by the Justice Hema Committee, constituted by the Kerala government after the 2017 actress assault case has revealed instances of harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam cinema industry, prompting calls for action against the guilty.

The panel report also alleged there was a “power nexus” consisting of a handful of producers, directors, actors and production controllers.

The Kerala government constituted the panel after the 2017 actress assault case involving actor Dileep to study issues of sexual harassment and gender inequality in Malayalam cinema.

Ground Report : Prime Minister Narendra Modi Visits Landslides Ravaged Wayanad , Takes Aerial Survey Meets Victims ; Shashi Tharoor Says Would Have Been Better If He Had Gone Earlier

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the landslide-devastated areas of Wayanad district in Kerala and trekked through the disaster-stricken Chooralmala to get a firsthand view of the destruction caused by the July 30 landslides.

Modi also visited one of the relief camps, which is home to many of those displaced in the massive landslides, and interacted with some of the survivors, including two children who lost their loved ones in the disaster that has claimed over 200 lives.

Modi arrived in the hill district by helicopter from Kannur airport. He walked through the affected regions to assess the damage.

Later, the Prime Minister visited the camp at Meppadi around 2.30 pm and spent nearly half an hour there, interacting with some of the survivors.

He spoke to them, heard their concerns and needs, and tried to comfort them, according to visuals shown on TV channels.

Modi placed his hands on the heads and shoulders of the victims as they broke into tears while recounting their ordeal to the PM.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a review meeting with officials regarding the landslide-affected area in Wayanad. Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, CM Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Minister Suresh Gopi are also present.

Prior to landing in Kalpetta, Modi conducted an aerial survey of the landslide-ravaged areas of Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Punchirimattam hamlets aboard an Indian Air Force helicopter.

On PM Modi’s visit to landslide-hit Wayanad, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor quoted by ANI said , “It would have been better if he had gone earlier and seen the conditions on the ground as some of us have done…I hope that with PM Modi’s visit, the government will now make it a point to actually go ahead and declare this a national disaster so that the appropriate level of assistance can follow”

Union Minister Suresh Gopi described former PM Indira Gandhi as the “mother of India” and late Congress Chief Minister K Karunakaran as a “courageous administrator”.

The comment by Gopi is sure to rankle the BJP which has been been very critical of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and have slammed her for imposing emergency in 1975.

The BJP leader also called Karnuakaran and Marxist veteran E K Nayanar as his “political gurus”.

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) sole Lok Sabha MP from Kerala, earlier took charge as the Minister of State (MoS) in the Ministry of Tourism . Soon after assuming the office, Gopi said he would have to study the tourism ministry and the terrain of the country to be able to do justice to his role.
