it's wild how ships that used to be common back in the day are the kind of ships that will get you harassed and/or suibated.

dustfern, swiftbright... i've even seen people against brackensorrel and i had to explain that sorreltail wasn't even a child at the start of new prophecy, let alone when brackenfur took interest in her.

Brightsong and Swiftbird become mates! Absolutely no one is surprised.

Smallstar Climbs, panting, up the meeting ledge. Calling the clan to him once he got his breath back.

"Smokekit, come up."

He does so.

"You will be known as Smokepaw, and Cinderpelt will mentor you."

The young tom nods solemnly. Every cat knows he had wanted to be a mediator. No one speaks up about it though.

Cinderpelt, a medicine cat forced into the role, approaches Smokepaw and touches their noses together. Her pelt is crawling. She hates this.

"Scoriakit, come up."

He comes up, face steely after seeing his brother being essentially shoved in the medicine den.

"You will be known as Scoriapaw, and your mentor will be Heartface."

Heartface comes up to touch their noses.

"Sterlingkit come up."

She does so, looking a bit droopy.

"You are now going to be known as Sterlingpaw, and your mentor will be Katnisstuft."

She comes up and touches their noses together.

"Slatekit, come up."

He comes up, ears flat.

"You are now Slatepaw, and your mentor will be Longtail."

Longtail comes up to touch their noses.

Sloepaw announces she is actually a molly and will be using she/her only now. Everyone is accepting of this.

Crookedjaw and Brindleface become mates.

A Driftclan apprentice asks to join the clan. She explains that after a recent flood she dosent feel safe so close to the water aymore. Petuniapaw is accepted into the clan and Smallstar takes her as his apprentice.

Very curious how the "Why can't they just be friends? We need more friendships in wc!" argument tends to pops up almost exclusively when discussion queer ships, but practically never when it comes to stuff like hmmm JayBriar? SwiftBright? Or MinnowMouse?

Yes that's part of it! The initial inspiration came from the MAP Let Me Make You Proud hosted by Star Animations on YouTube! Then I realized the symbolism of having Cloudpaw rebuild the lost clan after Cloudstar led them away from the forest

Aw, how heart-warming.. Check out this drawing of Brightheart and Starclan Swiftpaw done by @noxvoca. The artist didn’t intend for this to be ship art, they imagine that Swiftpaw likes to watch over Brightheart and her family from Starclan. I, for one, really like this concept. I can totally see Swiftpaw being a cool ‘uncle type’ character to Brightheart’s kits. Maybe since Brightheart’s first litter only consisted of Whitekit (AKA Whitewing), Swiftpaw helped her to watch Whitekit. Swiftpaw died super young so I feel watching over Brightheart’s kits helped him feel as if he were alive again. I can definitely imagine him stirring up mischief with the kits like sneaking out of camp or pranking the elders. Swiftpaw always acted like a trouble maker who was very daring. Something I did want to discuss however is the SwiftBright ship. Some people prefer it over CloudBright as Swiftpaw knew Brightheart longer. The two of them seemed extremely close, Brightpaw agreed without hesitation to help Swiftpaw find out what was living at Snakerocks. Brightpaw never seemed particularly close with Cloudpaw, she only seemed really interested in Swiftpaw. Even after his death, she speaks very fondly of him and seems genuinely hurt that he passed. Typically he died saving her as he kept the dogs from continually attacking her. She described him as fighting like “all of Lionclan”. In the Secret of the Clans field guide, we get a short story written in the perspective of Brightheart called “Brightheart Speaks: The Death of Swiftpaw”. We get very critical insight into what exactly happened at Snakerocks and how both Brightpaw & Swiftpaw felt. It could very much be argued that the pair had romantic feelings for each other, or at least that Swiftpaw had feelings for Brightpaw. Warriors doesn’t usually have cats of different genders that are friends. My personal take is I see Swiftpaw & Brightheart as friends and I ship Cloudtail X Brightheart. But, I want to know what YOU think. Do you ship Brightheart and Swiftpaw? Or Do you believe them to be just friends? Do you think it was a one-sided crush on Swiftpaw’s part? Do you think they would have ended up together if Swiftpaw had lived? Do you think Swiftpaw watches Brightheart from Starclan? Who will Brightheart choose once she joins Starclan? The SwiftBright cousin thing is actually a double retcon because we didn't know Lionheart was the father of Frostfur's kits in the books either. As was typical of a lot of first arc queens until Goldenflower and Tigerstar, the sire of the litter was unknown

the wild thing is when i was reading the first arc when i was a kid i'm pretty sure i headcanoned lionheart and goldenflower as siblings AND headcanoned lionheart being the father of cinder, bracken, thorn, and bright

i also headcanoned mousefur and runningwind as siblings and that one-eye and halftail were mates

my 10 year old brain was just giga braining i guess

sexuality/gender headcanon: never thought about it before. first thing to pop into my head is transmasc and aro/ace and i like that for him, so uh, that I guess?

rating out of 10: 7/10, there's not that much there but i gotta give it to him the guy makes for some great animations so that definitely factors in

fav thing about them: concise but incredibly impactful character arc for what is basically a background character to whom things happen offscreen. congrats of having one of the coolest deaths in the series, pal

least fav thing about them: i don't think there is anything to Actively Dislike about swiftpaw if i'm being honest, so again probably the fact that he's inherently not a very deep character. not necessarily a fault mind you, just limits my attachment a bit.

when i first started liking them: when he died LOL

favourite moment: i feel like this is self-explanatory

fav ship: n/a, don't think he ever really interacts with any unrelated cats in his age group. besides cloudtail i suppose, but uh, i don't ship them.

fav platonic relationship: brightheart! his apprentice/mentor relationship with longtail is also great, at least fanon-wise.

ship i hate: swiftbright.... they are cousins, sorry. i normally wouldn't feel to mention obviously gross non-canon stuff here but feel like this is a weirdly understated fact considering it's probably the most common instance i see of people accidentally shipping closely related cats.

prefer canon or fanon?: fanon! people have gotten some really cool things out of swiftpaw.

random headcanon: i like to think he grew up very close with his cousins cinderpelt/brackenfur/brightheart/thornclaw, due to being a similar age and not having any littermates of his own besides the deceased and dubiously-canon lynxkit. i also like to think he is named after the bird rather than the adjective, but doesn't tell people that because your prefix being a compliment is cool.

unpopular opinion: he shouldn't "have lived". listen, it feels mean to say that about any character who dies prematurely (just as a young adult in swift's case actually, since his ceremony was overdue), and i've seen swiftpaw lives aus that are really cool, but speaking canon-wise? swiftpaw's death IS swiftpaw's character, and if he'd survived happily he'd most likely be a boring background character who dies between books, or something. swiftpaw died for conflict and tragedy thank u swiftpaw

Funny thing about the Swiftbright ship is that they literally only interact in ONE scene in the whole main series. They don’t even exchange any dialogue in that scene. Just Brightpaw nudging him out of the den because he’s sulking.

Ikr, meanwhile Bright and Cloud interact several times and it is implied they are super close prior to the dog attack

I also find it funny how now because of retcons Swiftpaw is Brightheart’s first cousin so that ship began to sink quite quickly when that information came out lol

how I feel: swiftpaw was...kind of a dick when he was alive LOL. obviously that came from growing up and being groomed to be one of tigerclaw’s supporters, but he really was a brat. I do think that he was justified in being mad about cloudtail becoming a warrior, but I think that he should have had an honest discussion w bluestar himself (not that blue was in her right mind). I think she would have respected him more if he came to her directly instead of trying to prove his worth (not saying she would make him a warrior, but she would probably not be as harsh towards him) otp: you know I’m not rlly the greatest fan of swiftbright (they’re cousins lol) but I like to think he had a small crush on sandpaw while they trained together bc she’s the cool older girl who can totally kick his ass, also part of the reason why he doesn’t like fireheart lolplatonic otp: swift/bright, swift/thorn
