The Warrior Code: The Code of Kits & Queens

Clan law may not be the wordy, twisty mess we see in modern government, but each entry into the code is a series of decrees centered around a specific theme. Each code individually is referred to by its name, while the warrior code as a whole may be referred to as simply "the code". There is a story behind all new laws, but the origins of the Code of Kits & Queens may be one of the saddest.

Code Origins: The Tale of Thornheart

Once upon a time, there was a LynxClan artisan we called Flamewing. The tasks of an artisan are many, but Flamewing in particular loved to trade goods with the other Clans. She had an eye for deals and was a skilled diplomat. She frequently engaged in trade with a WheatClan artisan by the name of Swiftleap. The problem was, she engaged in more than trade.

Flamewing hid her pregnancy for as long as she could, unsure how to explain it to LynxClan. She had no mate, and she could not convince a tom in her Clan to be an honor sire for her. When the Clan realized Flamewing was pregnant, they demanded to know who her sire was; it was custom at that time to make sure honor sires within the Clan did not cross too close to other relations, as the Clans had some understanding that fresh blood made healthy kits. When no one came forward as a sire, LynxClan hosted a trial and forced Flamewing to reveal the name of her sire.

Flamewing had four kits under the eyes of watchful codekeepers. Sure enough, each kit looked like Swiftleap. LynxClan feared the children would have loyalties to WheatClan and foil LynxClan plans. In their xenophobic fear and anger, with Flamewing's guilty verdict after her trial, LynxClan slaughtered all four kits and gave the mother a dishonor title; Thornheart, a name that suggested a sort of painful love that brought ruin in its wake.

In StarClan's fury at the death of four innocent lives, they stole four lives from the LynxClan leader, Petalstar, and ordered her to make amends for her wickedness if she wished to join StarClan one day. With that, the Code of Kits & Queens was born.

The Decrees within the Code of Kits & Queens

Under the Code of Kits & Queens, a kit cannot be harmed. It is the duty of the Clans to protect all kits, regardless of their origins. A kit cannot be thrown out of their Clan solely for being half-Clan or as punishment to their parents. A kit's actions are their own and must be judged accordingly. A kit cannot be harmed in combat and any kits in danger must be rescued to the best of the cat's ability. No one can stand to the side and let a kit die.

Since the simple knowledge of being half-Clan can endanger a kit, the Clan cannot question a queen as to the identity of her sire; her kits are to be treated as pure-blood Clan cats. This privilege is extended to toms who bring kits into the Clan. A queen without a mate may be suspected by her Clanmates, but there is a good chance she isn't breaking the code thanks to honor-siring. A molly can mate with a tom outside the Clan for the sake of diversity and bringing new life to the Clan. They aren't supposed to have romantic ties with these sires, but it's become a more respected choice over the moons. Often mollies will pick wandering loners and kittypets, but sometimes they make deals with toms from other Clans, hoping their children inherit the tom's skills.

Kits and nursing queens are some of the first to eat every day. They require more consistent meals than older and stronger cats, and must be cared for. This was always tradition, but after Thornheart, it was put into code.

Kit-snatching was officially outlawed with this code, although it is hard to investigate certain instances of kit-snatching since the code also prevents the questioning of a kit's origins. In the past, in times of need, the Clans would snatch kits from nursing loners, kittypets, even one another. Wars were waged over these kits, but it also established a strong tradition of adoption within the Clans. If a codekeeper was to investigate kit-snatching, someone would have to come forward with a report of losing their kits.

At the end of the day, the focus of this code is to protect the lives of all kits that grow under the protection of the Clans.

So here’s an AU no one probably cares to hear. Thanks to Twitter and there being a warriors ship vote toll there I fell down the Fireheart x Morningflower ship and I’ve been thinking of an AU.

I also did a family tree and I’m gonna explain a few things

Instead of Thunderclan fireheart is raised in Windclan. Jake asks Nutmeg to let him take their two kits; Rusty and Princess; to Windclan for they hold a special destiny and she agrees. He meets Tallstar and asks for him to raise the two kits in the clan. Rusty is named Emberkit and Princess is named Softkit.

Emberheart and Morningflower are together and they have Gorsepaw, Quailkit and Storkkit in their first litter. Then later have Leafpool and Squirrelflight.

Brightheart ended up leaving Thunderclan after the dog attack that killed Swiftpaw and where she was renamed Lostface by Bluestar(what happens in the books). She didn’t like that Bluestar pratically acted the way she did and joined Windclan where her and Cloudtail get together. Instead of Whitewing it’s Swiftleap; named after Swiftpaw.

I also wanted to do something different and split up the Po3. Jaykit is the son of Feathertail and Crowfeather. I decided to switch the au where it was Stormfur who died in the mountains instead of Feathertail. But Feathertail and Nightcloud decide to leave to join the tribe together.

Hollykit and Breezekit are the kits of Squirrelflight and Crowfeather who are together. Lionkit was found as an orphaned and is being raised by Mothwing in Riverclan. He has two proud medicine cat mommas.

I honestly didn’t know what to do and who to make the parents of Ivypool and Dovewing so I made it Harespring because well it’s my AU.

I gave Scourge a mate and kit because why not. Raven was just a placeholder name and I might change it but I’m keeping their kits name as Dragonfly.

Softheart was with Cloudrunner instead of Cloudrunner being with Morningflower because well she’s with Emberheart(Fireheart). He dies anyway in my rewrite and Softheart gets together with Ashfoot and raise Crowfeather and Cloudkit together. Ashfoot and Deadfoot were mates but drifted apart after the death of their kits which left only Crowkit alive.

I’ve always HC Kestrelflight, Harespring and Heathertail as siblings. Being born to Onewhisker and Whitetail. Onewhisker still had kits with Smoke and the same happened where he abandoned them leaving Smoke to teach her two remaining kits; Darktail and Lynxfrost; to hate the clans.

Heyyyyyyy I finished! Only three more ships to go! Anyway, @cappuccino-bear asked for SandLeaf, an anon who has Not Read Longstar AU asked for the “crackship” LongPrincess, and another anon asked for Bombay!Squirrelflight/Snowkit!

In the first AU, Sandstorm and Firestar had an agreement - she wanted kits, and he wanted heirs. They did care about each other, but when Firestar was slain in the Great Battle, saving his clanmates and deputy, half her grief was faked. And when she had Sparkkit and Yellowkit, the clan began to pressure her kits to be the next Firestar! When a vision hit her, to find a lost clan, she waited until nightfall, and with Whitestar’s caring goodbye, headed out with her nearly six moons kits. She met the cat that would become Leafstar, and the two found Skyclan together. They later have Sunnypool, and when the clans reunite, Whitestar is the first to greet her warmly, and transfers that warmth and love to the cat that his apprentice-daughter-hero loves.

In the second AU, Firepaw is nearly a year old when he joins up, and Darkstripe is the one to challenge him. Longtail eventually tracks Fireheart back to his home, and sees what may be the most beautiful cat ever - and a kittypet, the Brat’s sibling to boot! When Fireheart returns, he and Longtail have a conversation about visiting strange kittypets, but Longtail I promised her I’d check in sometimes! Or she’ll storm into Thunderclan and fight Bluestar! When Fireheart catches an illness, Longtail agrees after a definitely unneeded convincing, to tell the kittypet not to invade Thunderclan. They hit it off, the motherly looking cat switching between sweet and fierce, and Longtail stumbling over his words. Their relationship remains secret until Princess gives birth, and she demands to raise her kits with their father. Besides, she wants to meet that apprentice of his who fought off those dogs, Swiftleap! Firestar is torn between appalled and delighted.

In the last AU, Snowkit is dropped into the yard of a twoleg who takes care of fancy breed cats that didn’t measure up to standards. This includes a deaf elderly savannah cat named Comet, who teaches him cat sign, and a Bombay with white spotting named Shadow. The three bond, and the younger pair fall hard for each other. When Comet passes of old age, a few moons after meeting Snowfall (who insisted on the name change) and Shadow’s first litter, the couple decide to find his mother, and begin an adventure. Brackenfur is the one to find them, catching Shadow on the edge of Thunderclan territory. He spits a warning, but the dark molly chirps brightly at him Oh is this Thunderclan? She thumps her feet, and another cat emerges with two kittens, a strangely familiar scent in his nose. It takes him a moment, but the white tom beats him to it, flapping his feet around his face, and it hits. Snowkit - little lost Snowkit!? The molly chirps again, oh! Oh, you’re Him! You’re the kind one! Snowfall told me about you! Brackenfur cries out as he approaches, and the two rub heads. After a short reunion, Brackenfur leads Snowkit - Snowfall - back to camp, calling out Everyone! Speckletail!!!!! Mistlefrost! Goldenflower! Lionstar!!! Fireheart! Look! Look! Speckletail lays eyes on her missing-dead-gone kit, and screams, her swift run drawing the deaf tom’s attention. His eyes widen, and a single slurred word comes out. MUMMA!! They collide in a mess of fur and tears and unbridled joy, with Mistlefrost practically knocking them both over, as an equally teary Lionstar and Goldenflower greet the molly his lost brother brought home. Snowfall peels himself out from under his mother and sister, and gestures, the molly brightening. Oh, hello! You must be his family! I am too! This drags the pile apart, and she continues. I’m Shadow! And these are our kits! Speckletail nearly collapses, caught be Fireheart who finally makes it through the crowd. Cometkit, Specklekit! Come meet your family. Tearily, Speckletail crouches down, the little white and golden kits immediately purring against her. Thunderclan is stunned and overjoyed to see their lost clanmate home, with family as well. Shadow is named Shadowflight, for her adventurous spirit, and when the clans leave, Speckletail leaves with them, after helping Shadowflight and Snowfall take the elders to the twoleg who loved them. He coos like a queen as he scoops the honorable elders up, and chirps childish greetings at the returned pair. In the new territory, Snowfall and Shadowflight have their second litter, and look to a bright future. Cometnose is mostly deaf, and Lionfur is deaf in one ear, but neither are called cripples, only fine warriors in the same vein as their father.

Whew! That last one had the Muse throttling me to write, but anyway enjoy!

lichennose -> fumchoop (moss seemed a fine substitution for lichen, given he was named for his fur texture as a kitten) bramblefoot -> bayabpwyyarr quailflight -> hrrufafa (used rock pigeon instead of quail because it fits her personality more than pigu, songbird, or the birds of prey options- also I love the word hrru haha) galepaw, galestone -> hwoopwyr, hwoobon (since he's named after the moonstone, id be curious to see if 'bon' is in the word for moonstone- if not, his name would use whatever form of stone is in moonstone) longpounce -> prrafu (this one was tricky... I believe a more direct translation of prrafu would be "quickjump" or "swiftleap" but oh well) mudthistle -> sslopnak (is there another word for dangerous/slippery mud?) cicadastorm -> kbkbkrraka (another tricky one, I went for kbkb because I felt it captures the vibe of a cicada)

I love these!! Everyone's creativity is blowing me away!

I've made a couple more vocab words for you, you can choose to change the names you've chosen or not-- the sweet thing about Clanmew is that because it's working with the idea of a translator making conscious choices in what the name will become, they can be translated in a way that's not direct but maintains the vibe, y'know?

Lichens

I have realized that I really need to translate a bunch of these, they are actually super important to an ecosystem and any culture that regularly navigates in a forest would have multiple names for these. For now though, here's three;

Beard Lichens = "Fekfik" A fluffy type of lichen that will probably fit the 'scraggly' vibe of your guy

Xanthoria parietina = Yellow Lichen = Aweewa A hardy, yellow lichen that grows very easily, sometimes called 'shore lichen' because it can set up shop anywhere. Yellow + Bloom = Aweewa.

Candelariella reflexa = Eggyolk Lichen = Ssufik This one is actually really important; this species pops up where animals are regularly laying their marks because it LOVES nitrogen. "Ssufik" is also the general word for "Marker" because of this. Mark an area regularly and eggyolk lichen will start growing there.

Etc

Coturnix coturnix = European Quail = "Wipiwik"

Cirsium vulgare = Bull Thistle = "Kessak"

Deep, dangerous mud that will not hold your weight = "Sslyywp"

Cicadetta montana = New Forest Cicada = "Rre'ef".

I went and got this one for you; I'm sure your fanclan isn't set up in England since this is the only cicada they even have there, but it's an interesting story. They used to be widespread but are now so rare that it's got researchers jumping whenever they hear a possible report. The song is pretty hard for humans to hear and a lot more subdued than other cicadas.

It's also out of range for where BB takes place and ergo Base Clanmew, but hey, figured it was interesting enough to include for you.

So, Forest of Secrets, Cloudkit, Ahskit and Fernkit go on their little hunting trip, and are attacked by a fox. Fireheart and Cinderpaw are too late and they are all killed.

Ooooh boy that’s gonna be awful for the clan lol.

I mean it’s awful for Brindleface and Whitestorm obviously, because AshFern are their kits. i’d even hazard that Whitestorm wants to confort her and never ends their relationship, which means he won’t go with Willowpelt, and SorrelRainSoot are never born, either. (unless, like I saw people theorize, Whitestorm sired Brindleface’s litter but isn’t the father, she just didn’t want to reveal the real dad)

And lemme tell you that no Sorreltail and no Ferncloud mean a lot less kits in this clan.

But let’s keep things where we are right now, aka Forest of Secrets. Princess cuts all ties with her brother after he tells her Cloudkit died because of him (because obviously he will feel guilty).

Three kits dead. Fireheart made deputy after midnight. Bluestar becoming crazy. All of it is seen as bad omens. Mousefur, Speckletail and the others stage a coup. Bluestar is forced to step down and become an elder as Bluefur. She doesn’t go without a fight and accidentally dies (slamming her head against a wall of her den or something).

Whitestorm was against the whole thing, but he is a senior warrior and popular, so when Mousefur becomes Mousestar, he accepts to become deputy, because both halves of the clan need to reconcile. Fireheart is exiled.

Then like in my au where Tigerclaw did kill Bluestar and exiled Fireheart, Fireheart goes and basically does everything Tigerclaw did for Shadowclan, except he does it out of the goodness of his heart, and also Starclan does chose him, it’s not a faked-by-Jaggedtooth-sign. The fact he filled the niche means Tigerclaw cannot and so Tigerclaw is killed by Scourge when he asks for help and we don’t hear about them anymore. That means no TigerSasha and no HawkMoth.

On the Thunder Front, however, things change.

Mousestar doesn’t spiral down like Bluestar. Mousestar comes back during the fire. She saves Yellowfang, because her clan needs a senior medcat, and discards Bramblekit, because he’s the son of a traitor, but later pretends to his family that she couldn’t save him and tried her best. Tawnypaw won’t leave to Shadowclan anyway because her dad’s not there and also dead, but now she’s got the other incentive that she doesn’t want to leave her mother alone.

Anyway before we get to Tawnypaw leaving or staying, we’ve got Snowkit. Swiftpaw saves him and Mousestar makes him a warrior under the name of Swiftleap because he JUMPED so HIGH you don’t get it he shouldn’t even be allowed to jump so high anyway let’s get moving. Swiftleap saves Snowkit.

The situation is not great numbers-wise because they’ve got only two apprentices (ThornBright) and two kits (Tawny and Snow). Dustpelt and Sandstorm are... well, encouraged to get together, and since neither’s canon mate is in the clan (one is Shadowclan’s leader, the other is long dead) they get along quite well actually. They have two kits: Redkit and Patchkit (Redtail was Dustpelt’s mentor, Patchpelt died in the fire...), Redkit is pale ginger like his mother and Patchkit is basically her father’s spitting image.

So anyway later, with no Cloudtail in sight, Brightheart and Swiftleap get together, Thorn goes with Tawny and Snow will later get with Patchkit/heart. The dating pool mends itself despite Firestar, Graystripe, CloudAshFern dead or exiled.

Firestar goes to revive Skyclan alone. When he comes back, he comes back with Leafdapple, Sharpclaw having become Sharpstar, become Starclan realized the three kin of his kin would never happen if Cloudkit was dead and Firestar had no kits. So they sent a dream message to Leafdapple to convince her to leave Skyclan behind and go with Firestar. Shadowclan accepts her because whatever they already took in rogues and loners and took back in exiled warriors so one more, one less...

Squirrelflight and er... not Leafpool because their mother’s name’s already Leafdapple, then... Barkkit/Barkpool idk are born from FireDapple.

Did I mention that Stormfur was killed by Bone? Well with only three apprentices instead of five to jump on him he had the time to kill one before dying...

Squirrelpaw, Tawnypelt, Crowpaw and Feathertail go to find Midnight. Mudfur dies without an apprentice. CInderpelt dies without an apprentice. Barkpool and Crowfeather do leave the clans but Littlecloud doesnt’ die before way after so Barkpool actually steps down from medcatship, raises her kits, while one of Tallpoppy’s kits is raised to become medicine cat (let’s say Toadfoot, as I dont remember him having kits).

Mousewhisker is shoe-horned into becoming Thunderclan’s new medcat, and Willowshine is trained as soon as she’s of age by Littecloud and Barkface. There are no PoppyMoleCinderHoney since Sorreltail was never born. Whitestorm retires between PoT and OotS, replaced by Tawnypelt (who had three kits at the same time as in canon but with Thornclaw).

In fact, all the cats that didn’t have kits before and are still thunderborn (Hazeltail mainly because a lot of the others are never born... except if we give Ferncloud’s kits to DustSand but then there are other logistic problem such as Sandstorm never becoming a permaqueen, not the right temper for that) so all those cats find mates and get kits because with no Ferncloud, no Sorreltail, no Cloudtail and no Firestar, let’s simply say there are a lot less cats in Thunderclan.

Tawnypelt becomes Tawnystar after the Great Battle, in which Mousestar dies. She names Tigerheart as her deputy and, without the whole ��Dovewing thinks I’m a god and also we both broke the warrior code and never suffered any consequences” I imagine he’s much more sufferable.

The Three end up being Hollyleaf (with no vilain arc as there’s no Ashfur and no pretending to be Squilf’s kits part), Lionblaze and Jayfeather. They kick the Dark Forest’s arse and Firestar dies in the Great Storm instead of the Great Battle because no Hawkfrost and no Brambleclaw to make him want to kill Firestar in the first place. The new leader is Snowbird because why not.

Darktail cannot take over the clans because they are all being ruled in a great way. Alderheart is born in Shadowclan from Squirrelflight and Ratscar and finds Violetshine and Twigbranch next to the Thunderpath. Needletail didn’t come with you and Leafdapple died because of a fox without being reunited to the rest of her family.

There’s no impostor, no Bramblefake nor Tawnyfake nor anything. No Ashfur, no Bramblestar, no SquirrelBramble? No reason to have any of it.

The clans live happily ever after.

I think I'm going to change some character names, some of them don't fit the characters very well or don't really interest me as much as they did when I first wrote them down, and I don't like using canon names or reusing suffixes for too many cats at one time, so it's renaming time!

Here's a list of characters who are up for name changes! I might not change all of these, but I at least want to get some ideas down to decide whether I really want to or not. These are a f ew of my ideas for each character, and I am also very open to suggestions!

If your Swiftpaw had lived through Starless what would his warrior name have been AND do you think he'd have eventually been totally corrupted by Firefall had he not died so young?

Yes, if Swiftpaw had lived he'd 100% be under Firefall's paw. Firefall is really manipulative and when we get to that part in the story you'll see Firefall is really happy to set his son's anger at Bluestar on fire.

As for a name I COULD BE CONVINCED OF SWIFTHAWK but also I like Swiftfall after dear old dad or Swiftleap.

An easy-going tom who can usually be found chatting with Swiftleap by the river waiting for fish to come by. Some consider him lazy, but the sheer amount of fish he can bring back says that he just has good technique.
