What of the individual that defines themselves by their country?

And what of the country that betrays that individual’s identity?

I find myself looking in the mirror, not finding in my eyes the reflection of colours I have grown to protect as my own—colours upon which I built my character, my persona, my beliefs and morals and habits—my heritage.

I find myself looking back at my country, its colours lost in a war it hasn’t fought. The threads of its flags burned by winds born from the weight of despair under the feet of a people whose faith is in tatters.

Rivers of tears flow down my face as I defend the colours of my country. But when I turn my head to check if it’s got my back, my eyes meet colours they do not recognise—the colours of a country that I do not know. I discover that my country has changed its colours, the colours of my heritage, the colours of the blood that courses through my veins—no longer are they my colours.

ماذا عن الشخص اللذي يعرّف عن نفسه ببلاده؟

و ماذا عن البلاد التي تخون هويته؟

أرى نفسي و لا أرى شبهٌ بالألوان التي امتثلت بها شخصيتي و طقوسي و عاداتي و افكاري.

أرى بلادٌ قد خسرت ألوانها في حربٍ لا تحارب فيها. احترقت خيوط أعلامها في رياحٌ هبت من تحت اقدام شعبٍ قد اهتزّت همته.

تتدفق من عيني انهار دموع و أنا أدافع عن ألوان بلادي، فألفت رأسي و أنظر إلى الوراء، و تقابلني ألوانٍ لا اعرفها؛ ألوان بلادٍ مختلفة. فقامت بلادي بحرق ألوانها، ألوان وطني، ألواني أنا.
