Trend Hedge Funds Falter as Nimble Macro Funds Capitalize on Market Volatility
LONDON, June 13 – A deepening divide has emerged in hedge fund performance this year, highlighting the challenges faced by algorithm-based trend-following funds amid unpredictable market shifts, especially in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s erratic policy decisions.
Systematic hedge funds—which rely on algorithms to follow prolonged market trends—have recorded steep losses. According to a client note from Societe Generale reviewed by Reuters, such funds are down over 11% through May 2025. Major global players like Systematica, Transtrend, and Aspect Capital, which collectively manage nearly $30 billion, have seen declines of 18.5%, 16.3%, and 15% respectively.
These losses contrast sharply with the 7% gains posted by discretionary macro funds, which rely on active human decision-making to navigate volatile markets. “Trend funds have been whipsawed and haven’t been able to latch onto any consistent trend,” said Gwyn Roberts of PivotalPath. “Each time they begin to follow a movement, the market quickly reverses.”
The turbulence has been particularly pronounced in assets like U.S. Treasuries, the Australian dollar, Japanese bonds, and coffee, which SocGen identified as major pain points for trend-followers. For example, European stocks surged 10% early in the year but dropped 20% in just two weeks after Trump's April 2 "Liberation Day" tariff announcement. U.S. equities faced similar volatility.
Macro Funds Take the Lead
In contrast, discretionary macro funds have benefited from this erratic environment. Rokos Capital Management has posted returns of 9.5%, EDL Capital is up 24%, and Brevan Howard’s Alpha Strategies returned 4.32%, though its main fund dipped 2.12%.
Historically, macro funds have had the edge. Since 2001, they’ve averaged 9.6% annual returns, compared to 7.2% for managed futures traders like trend funds. “Managed futures act as a defensive allocation,” noted Roberts. “They typically shine when other strategies falter, but that hasn't been the case this year.”
Multi-Strategy Funds Cushion Losses
Some hedge fund managers are balancing losses in trend strategies with gains elsewhere. For instance, Man Group’s AHL Alpha Programme is down 10.6% this year, but its multi-strategy fund is up 5.4%. Similarly, AQR Capital Management’s Apex Fund gained 10.6% through May, and even its alternative trend strategy Helix defied the sector slump with a 7% gain—though it flattened out in May.
Graham Capital Management reported nearly 9% returns in its Multi-Alpha Opportunity Fund, offsetting an 8.7% drop in its Tactical Trend fund. Founder Ken Tropin emphasized the importance of staying the course: “When trends reverse violently, it usually doesn’t pay to overreact and abandon models that have long-term track records.”
Outlook
According to Adam Singleton, CIO of Solutions at Man Group, May brought mixed outcomes even for discretionary macro strategies. While bets on rising stocks, the euro, and yen paid off, certain relative fixed-income trades led to setbacks.
As markets remain volatile and reactive to political and economic developments, fund managers who can quickly pivot may continue to outperform those relying on static, trend-following algorithms.

WEEK 12 Reflection
week 12 Young Lords - Pussy Riot
Since I was a child I have been influenced by politics by my foster family who is involved in politics and take me to political events such as marches, political campaigns and other activities that instilled in me many of the things that I know now. things that I partly agree with and others that I don't. More than anything from my family I learned to respect the opinion of the opponent, "el opositor" "los de derecha” I remember that they said / Inclusive my mother, someone with whom I have lived for eight years and who "does not like much politics "you have her ideologies and they are very similar to my familys. says" somos de derecha" There are things that I express better in spanish and sound so much better, so if i say sentences in spanish, thats my explanation. Seria una irionia decir que estoy encontra del capitalismo, ya que vivo en un pais capitalista el cual me beneficia, pero tambien soy fan del socialismo y de muchas de sus ideologias. soooo, I am in place where I find benefits from both and I can't really say “ i am this or that” or “I am so against this or that” i Believe that everything depends and that we shouldn't be so absolute in the things we believe. Figures like Che Guevara are so familiar to me, “ revolution, socialism, communism, capitalism, etc” that I grew up hearing and I am no expert in these stuff, but these are things that are so imporatnt to know, so that people have a say and fight for the type of system they want. Sometimes its a bit confusing to me based on the relationships that many countries have for example, The Pussy Riot, wants President Vladimir Putin out , and in the video we observe the Protest being held are agsint Capitalism, yet I am not sure what kind of system they want it wasnt well explained, at least thats what i think. in the young lords documentary is well said that they want a socialist system, which is the one that doesnt have social classes and that production of goods is or can be owned or regulated by a community as a whole, like i said i dont consider my self an expert and I am a believer that things are mostly driven by a single word yet is more than that. Its very common to see protest like these in many latin American countries, just recently, Evo Morales, president of Bolivia resigned , and we saw this protests phenomena in many other latin countrie such as Chile, Honduras, Nicaragua in past last two years. I believe its important for the pople to demand the things they want from their Government, regardless their ideologies everyoe should have a voice and should be heard. it is okay to oppose and contradict , we all have different perspectives. One thing that really called my attention when i was watching the young lords doc. was when the young lords didnt know how to work thingd in Puerto Rico, and i believe its hard, i always say that its hard to ask and fight for things in a place one hasnt lived in or shared with experiences in such land, thats why i myself try not to involve myslef or try to impose my ideologies of what should be done in a situation or place i havce never been in. I can only speak for my own experiences. Also with the Young Lords I get the idea that they are against imperealism (I am) SIEMPRE ME A MOLESTADO LA IDEA DE UN PAIS EXTRANGERO IMPONIENDO REGLAS EN OTROS PAISES” i am in favor of having good relationships hasta ahi no mas). I know most of my posts are me just talking about the things i believe but these are the kind of stuff that comes to my mind, my thoughts are so messy i want to talk about so many things its hard for me to keep it organized. Anyways, In both documentaries I see people protesting for what they want and i like it, I like, I wish there wasnt a need to do that and that our needs and our rights didnt depend on a system that favors only some people. Me considero una persona muy humanitaria mas alla de todo de mis ideas y creencias systematicas, antes de ello deberia ponerse las necesidades del pueblo independientemente su partido politico.
Protest held in two different time periods, Both asking for rights, that should be given, without question.

Oxford Innovation District Competition Shortlist News
Allies and Morrison, Carlo Ratti Associati, Grimshaw, Hawkins Brown and Prior + Partners through to Stage Two
Wednesday 12 January 2022 – Oxford University Development, a £4bn joint venture between the University of Oxford and Legal & General Capital, today reveals the shortlist of five teams proceeding to the second stage of its international design competition for the masterplan team for its world-leading £1 billion, 190-hectare mixed-use Innovation District at Begbroke, to the north of Oxford.
The lead consultants of the shortlisted teams are: Allies and Morrison; Carlo Ratti Associati; Grimshaw; Hawkins Brown; and Prior + Partners. The shortlist was selected by the jury panel from an exceptionally strong field of 40 entries. In an extremely competitive field, all shortlisted teams scored highly against the stage 1 criteria of creative ability, problem definition, collaborative thinking, communication skills and the overall diversity and inclusivity of the team.
Anna Strongman, CEO, Oxford University Development, said:
“We were inspired by the high quality of the entries and excited by the potential of Begbroke outlined by the teams. Practices and collaborations grasped the challenge of creating a place of world leading research alongside a community calling Begbroke home. We look forward to engaging with the short-listed teams to explore ideas further in stage 2.’’
The winning design team will set the bold ambition and design intent for a project that will transform the area around the University’s Begbroke Science Park, to the north of Oxford. The project will also create a community of up to 2,000 quality homes, with new schools, public park and nature reserve.
OUD’s aspiration is to create a boundary-pushing scheme that demonstrably achieves a step-change in sustainable design, delivery, and operation. The new district will seek to attract the very best minds, while driving economic growth, improving transport connections, delivering benefits for local people, as well as enhancing the surrounding natural landscape for public access. The site will provide an exemplary new setting for the University’s world-leading science and innovation, which will help address key global challenges facing humanity – from food security and biodiversity to climate change and the urgent need to move to a zero-carbon economy.
The ambition for Begbroke is anchored by Cherwell District Council’s Local Plan Partial Review, which has identified the site for a high-quality mixed-use development, comprising a range of research & development, residential, and associated social and physical infrastructure uses, such as schools, local centres, amenity space and recreation/leisure uses, as well as excellent connectivity to the City of Oxford by sustainable means.
The first phase of the scheme will bring forward new facilities for University research, as well as providing space to incubate spin-out companies.
The competition is being managed by Colander Associates. All 40 Stage One entrants can be viewed online at: https://www.colander.co.uk/journal/begbroke-competition-entries.
