I feel like Tae’s FS is currently dealing with issues related to self-doubt and potentially being overlooked by others. It’s like no one is recognising the amount of effort that they are putting into their work and life in general. It seems like the best advice right now for them is to focus on self-recognition instead of needing it from others. To acknowledge their own successes instead of asking others for the acknowledgement. There may be temporary setbacks but nothing that they won’t be able to overcome. They may need to reassess their expectations for what they need from others around them and understand why it is that they need confirmation. Inner reflection, overcoming stepbacks. Thoughts about Otae

I agree with the assessment that Tae was an underdeveloped character. This frustrates me a lot because I feel she’d a lot of potential. As for the hate, I think it's because there’s a dissonance between fan expectations, given her importance to the Yorozuya, and the relevance she actually had in the series. I also think part of the problem is that Sorachi relied on an archetype to create her character that was already getting old.

Like Shinpachi, Tae is the normal girl in the main cast. We’re initially introduced to her as an orphan in charge of raising her younger brother, burdened by her father's debts, who works hard and wants to save her family's dojo at all costs. This is a good start, and her willpower is admirable. However, these plot elements are almost immediately relegated in favor of something else: her love life.

Initially, I'd say she was going to be Gintoki's main love interest, which changed with the introduction of Kondou and Kyuubei. It's not that I don't like romance (quite the opposite), but it's noticeable that a good portion of Tae's appearances revolved around that love triangle. While people know it's comedy and that she's justified in beating up Kondou, it doesn't help her character to constantly be in that situation (I talked more about kontae here).

When it wasn't about her love life, Tae's role usually fell to being the heart of the Yorozuya, the emotional support, representing the place they can return to. This is evidently very important to Gintoki, Shinpachi and Kagura, but offers very little development for Tae. Her goal of saving the dojo is forgotten until it returns in Beam Saber arc, arc which not only puts her on the back burner, but isn't even relevant in the long run.

I think Sorachi didn't know what to do with her. He tried to give Tae important roles but failed spectacularly. An example of this is when he decided to make her one of the 4 Devas, only to do nothing with her again. Even her title of Queen of Kabukicho isn’t unique to her but shared with Kagura. However, I would say the worst offender was definitely Farewell Shinsengumi arc, in which Tae went with the rest to do absolutely nothing.

Going back to the dissonance between expectations and reality, I would first like to mention that a character's combat ability isn't everything, just because they’re strong doesn't automatically make them good or vice versa. However, it’s frustrating when we’re told that a character is strong and logically should be, but in the end isn’t. I also don't want to say that it's wrong that she needs help (everyone does at some point), but her self-sufficiency comes into question if she needs help so often.

Silver Soul arc is another example of this situation. She’d no role in that arc and had to be saved twice, first by Kyuubei and then by a net after a Shinra guy had captured her. Imagine if she’d used her hairpin to stab the alien instead. It would’ve been a great way to reestablish her character themes that she’s a strong, brave, feminine woman.

In short, I wish Sorachi had tried harder with Tae. I think it would’ve been fitting to make her older at the beginning of the series, so that she’d her own life and dreams she’d to sacrifice to raise Shinpachi and save the dojo that she'll pursue later. Also show her role as a leader, both with the Snack Smile girls and as a Deva of Kabukicho (as well as having her own title) and demonstrate that she’s skilled with the naginata. Basically, focus less on her love life and her role with the Yorozuya, and give more importance to her character's attributes. She’d a lot of potential and it feels like it was never reached.

Like suddenly there is so much of videos popping up with Jimin and Lee saeon in same places and similar dresses. And also he was there with jikook during their whiteday dinner date. So now Jimin and saeon are dating....For fvck sake they are friends....Others can hangout with their friends but when Jimin does it he is dating that person, like really???? Ykw now they say that the person seen in the billboard dropping in who mv is saeon itseems. People have made comparison photo too. And what irks me more is seeing ex-jkkrs saying saeon suits jm more than jk and jk can go and fvck tae and do fs with him to satisfy the toads. Many people don't seem to understand that all those books, fanfics, video analysis etc portraying JM as the villain is fueling more hate towards him. It's reached a point where it's no longer just tkkrs saying certain things. Even Jinkookers have started using same tkkrs' narratives and started claiming JM is forcing fs on JK.

When JM went to lolla to visit Jhope, tkkrs were saying he's going there to "steal Jhope's spotlight and he's a leech and attention seeker". Jhope solos just picked that narrative and used it and were hating on JM. Suga solos were saying same things when he visited Suga's concert in US, Tae solos were saying same things when he visited Tae's fanmeet. Damn, Jin solos were also saying that cause he used jinmin selfie on weverse.

You see how narratives that tkkrs started about him is getting wildly used against him? The narrative and hate is spreading and more and more people are actually starting to think of JM as some worst human.

There are more and more people talking exactly like tkkrs now.

That's why that book issue is pissing off. JM has done nothing to deserve all the hate he gets.

More controversial take, but I don’t even think vmins relationship is all that special. It’s based on being same age friends and Jimins babying of Tae but there is no real substance there, at least not on Jimins part. Army hype up the relationship to a ridiculous degree, obsessively so, but take away the affection and what is there? It’s much more obvious they didn’t spend much time together in chapter 2, and I really want people to know that’s okay and it’s normal. People drift and come back together and the love remains, but to me it highlighted how their bond doesn’t extend much outside of work, where as it is so obvious Jikook share life together.

I know the show isn’t a hard launch of Jikooks relationship (whatever it is) but it isn’t not a hard launch. I mean the enlistment should have done that, shocked people to the core but nope, so the show is it. To me it’s them saying we’re close, deal with it, in a way in which we haven’t seen before. Like jkks know they are but Army at large ignore it, and although they still do, they are showing us them. They said that themselves so I know that’s the point. You can see it so clearly it’s impossible to ignore, highlighted even more by Tae’s presence.

Blogger stormy answered an ask earlier about FS in the show and if it’s present, it’s the ot7 mentions. And whilst I don’t think those mentions are forced, that is so true imo. The notion of the ot7 bond is what keeps BTS going, but I think chapter 2 did give them a much needed break, and time apart, again absolutely normal. These are young men, they need space to live their own lives. But the mention of others was sweet, Jimin calling Joon seeing as he was the only huyng not in MS at the time. It’s probably like calling your dad lol. Joon being the only one who turned to see Golden live counts for something in terms of namkooks relationship. Still though, it proves my thoughts and I think Goldy has said this before, that Jimin is the glue that holds them together for the most part. They all love him lots and he’s their centre I think, he tends to do the most ot7 FS (not a negative). It’s no wonder sometimes JK gets hurt in the process (not always on purpose aka the teasing), but man’s got him some alone time with Jimin and book Tae is there. Must have been frustrating. And for him saying it was better with Tae there, he literally followed what Jimin said first. But that’s the ot7, I don’t actually think they were serious, and obviously wanted to be alone, as it was meant to be for the two of them.

I just love the intimacy and domesticity they have, it’s so natural to them, like breathing, I’ve been in a relationship for 8 years and it reminds me of myself and my partner, of when you’re in your own world (we have no kids so have that freedom to be just us), they leave no room for others, and if they do it’s minimal. Although busy chapter 2 will have allowed them time to be them, no group work or content, no members breathing down their throats or trying to separate them. Just time for them, and it shows.

thank you for your thoughts anon and I agree, the show highlighted jikook's 'chemistry' as even the teasers called it😂I thought the same about vmin for a while (few years lol). I don't necessarily trust that when I see people hype something up between members that it's because something is actually there. I think it's more that those people want vmin to be soulmates (forever) so they will keep insisting on that. which I can sympathise with because if after the military jikook were less close, it would hurt me a lot (not afraid to admit that lol) cause I'm invested in their (first of all) close friendship so I would be delulu about it for a while for sure. but in terms of dynamics, I think from around 2016/2017 is when the vminkook dynamic changed and it was when jikook became closer. I do think everyone in bts loves jimin the most though and like you said he is the glue in that respect. jimin always wanted jk tho even just in the sense that some people like having their person (even as just friends, there's two people at my work who def come as a duo of friends and one is a woman married with kids, the other is guy in a long term relationship with his boyfriend, not saying that jikook are this but just saying that as an example that certain people like to have a partner like that and I get this vibe from jikook that they like having a 'partner'). Tae is going to become a hermitttttt! He is not going to leave his home at all wanting to be at home with his person all the time. He may even take a break from his usual activities or go on a little hiatus, especially when the due date is near. He would rely on his family a lot for support and may also rely on them, talk to them and ask them for advice. The pregnancy may even make him go back home or his parents could..move nearby if they don’t already live nearby. He would try to make his partner feel very grounded and he may go on waaaayyy too many shopping trips! OMG he would shop so much, even without his partner lol. He would want to know EVERYTHING, he would go to all of the doctor appointments and even request more appointments than needed, just to be on the safe side?! He would watch all of the videos keep track of everything, but all of the baby bump diaries, and keep a countdown too!  He would love the baby bump so much, very likely to sing to the baby bump every day before bed as well. I just see all of the love overflowing from his heart. All the love <3

hello! I read your Tae meta from last year and just wanted to say it was great and really gets to the bottom of the problems with how Sorachi handled Otae. My (unasked for ;)) two cents is that I think he was going for GinTae endgame but then changed his mind somewhere before Lesson 238 which I read as his way of giving a 'this is how it would happen but I'm not going to do it' resolution for GinTae. And it's fine to drop the romance but knowing he's not going to make any couples endgame and 1/2

Hi! First of all, thanks for reading and taking your time to send this to me, I really like hearing other people's thoughts! I hope you don't mind that I combined both asks, given that they've points in common and I already had a draft of the one I received a while ago 🙈 This made me realize that I hadn't thought about it too much before… Even if I've talked about this topic with other people before, usually, the conversation ends with us agreeing and moving on to other topics lol so I think this is the first time I'm analyzing it. I'll try to do it from both the characters' perspective and Sorachi's intentions as the story's author. Before continuing, I want to clarify that my intention isn't to convince anyone to stop liking it, I just wanted to explore this topic and wow, did I explore it, because it ended up being much longer than expected 😂

That said, I think one of the biggest reasons why many of us thought Tae was going to be Gintoki's main love interest is because of the setup. Tae is the first woman from the main cast to appear in the series, and her dilemma kickstarts the story and allows for the formation of the Yorozuya as we know it. Moreover, she's Shinpachi's older sister and also develops a strong bond with Kagura, so it was expected that she would also develop a strong romantic bond with Gintoki, connecting her to the main trio of Gintama.

However, as I mentioned in the previous post, things started to change with the introduction of Kyuubei, which solidified the Kondo-Tae-Kyuubei love triangle, and then with the introduction of Tsukuyo. I watched a video by Abbie Emmons titled "7 Deadly Romance MISTAKES Writers Make ❌ avoid these chemistry killers!" to help identify some points in the relationship between Gintoki and Tae, although I must mention that I don't think these were mistakes on Sorachi's part, quite the opposite, they were very conscious decisions. I won't go point by point; instead, I'll summarize the intent of the message.

Half of the video is about the development of intimacy between two characters. I think most of us can appreciate that at least until the Benizakura arc, it was clear that Sorachi still had in mind to develop the relationship between Gintoki and Tae romantically because they'd a scene where they were alone, had time to talk, and showed that they cared a lot for each other. However, as the series progresses, we stop seeing these kinds of scenes between them, as well as scenes where they're seen thinking about each other or having physical contact.

And although at the beginning of the series Tae participated more actively in the Yorozuya dynamics, after the introduction of Kyuubei, they're seen spending most of their time together, even when they're with the others. Tae remains an honorary member of the Yorozuya until the end, but it's clear that Sorachi wanted her to represent stability, emotional support, the place they can return to that will welcome them with a smile. So, even though Gintoki and Tae still care a lot for each other, their interactions will continue to be framed within the context of the Yorozuya for the rest of the series.

That said, I couldn't say exactly when Sorachi stopped considering a romantic relationship between them. I'd to look up chapter 238 because I didn't remember what it was about lol (for reference, it's the one where they're at a stall and there're only speech bubbles, in which other characters who look like Gintoki and Tae confess they're in love), and I think your interpretation is certainly interesting. The placement also makes sense, which is shortly after the arc introducing Tsukuyo, and it also follows the trend of other characters being the ones who tease them, and not themselves.

The other half of the video is about how the characters' relationships with the rest of the cast are shown. It's highlighted that there needs to be an emotional reaction from a character to the idea of the other being interested in someone else, something Sorachi showed in many different ways but not with Gintoki and Tae. In her case, at most, she was shown getting annoyed at Sacchan, but only when she was provoked first. When it came to Tsukuyo, there was no reaction. Similarly, Gintoki has no reaction when Kyuubei or Kondo demonstrate their love interest.

The last point of the video, but not less important, is when characters have more romantic chemistry with other characters. In Tsukuyo's case, I think Sorachi was already a more experienced writer who knew his characters better and knew what his story needed. In particular, I think he wanted Gintoki to have someone close with whom he could relate but who wasn't directly connected to his past, among other things. And as I mentioned before, most of Tae's emotional energy in the series is with Kyuubei, followed by Kondo.

But why Sorachi didn't continue developing Gintoki and Tae's relationship romantically? The most obvious reason is simply because he didn't want to lol, but the explanation behind this, I think, is due to two main reasons. The first is that he wanted to keep the relationships within the Yorozuya platonic, and since Tae is an honorary member of the Yorozuya, it felt wrong to establish that there were romantic feelings involved. By comparison, it would be like confirming a relationship between Kagura and Shinpachi. And yes, Sorachi did some ship-teasing more than once between them too, but at the end of the day, he chose not to pursue it, and I think maintaining the familiarity is a cause.

The other reason is that as he wrote the story, he realized that Gintoki and Tae didn't fit well together. Tae can give Gintoki a sense of stability, but what can he offer her? Tae clearly values stability as well, hard work, having money. But Gintoki, due to his circumstances, doesn't meet those standards. If you think about it, the only two occasions when Tae unequivocally showed interest in Gintoki were when he lost his memory (Memory Loss arc) and when Hijikata was in his body (Soul Switch arc). Two occasions where Gintoki wasn't himself. But she liked that he seemed more serious and diligent, which implies that Tae's type is different.

It's also worth mentioning that Gintoki isn't shown making the same gestures towards Tae that Kondo or Kyuubei, the other two characters who are canonically in love with her (which is why I think they're a good benchmark) do. For example, while Sorachi chooses to show Gintoki teasing Tae about her breast size, in contrast, he shows Kondo buying her a kimono that will look good on her regardless, you know, like a supportive partner would. Even with all this, I understand that het shippers might've felt uncomfortable with the idea of pairing Tae with Kondo, and the other viable option was Gintoki. I think Sorachi was also aware of this, which is why he decided to develop Kondo and Tae's relationship in the final arcs.

While we're at it, I prefer kyuutae by faaar. As I've also expressed before, although I think Kondo is a great character, his persistence doesn't sit well with me. But whether it was due to heteronormativity or because Sorachi identified with him as a fellow gorilla, it's clear to me that he decided to emphasize Kondo and Tae's relationship much more. Even when gintsu and kyuutae were stagnating, he continued developing kontae as much as he could (probably because he'd already done the heavy lifting with the other two ships, tbf).

Sorachi didn't plan many things in his story, which I think is both a strength and a weakness. One of the things that reflect this is, for example, that Hasegawa was originally going to be part of the Yorozuya, an idea he later abandoned, but the remnant of Hasegawa's presence in the series remained. In the same way, I think his initial idea was to pair Gintoki with Tae, but eventually, he didn't. It seems that he also had the idea at the beginning to end the series with certain couples, but later decided to leave an open ending in that sense, although some of his inclinations were clearer than others.

I've seen people say there're subtle hints throughout Gintama that they fell in love, and while I don't want to say those interpretations are wrong, I think Sorachi is quite straightforward when it comes to these kinds of things. Even with unrequited loves, like (apparently) in the case of Katsura and Ikumatsu, he showed that there was love. However, in the case of Gintoki and Tae, during the 15 years he wrote the manga, he didn't, probably because he felt it no longer fit the story after a certain point. That said, I think their relationship works just fine without the need for any labels.

Yes, JM flew to SK from France, but you also have to consider that was pre-planned. Which is also thoughtful and meaningful, but it’s different than what we understand transpired between Tkk.

I’ve previously said spontaneity is something that Tkk have in common, which is partially a reason why I think the above was able to take place, which is more of an indication of the type of relationship they have where they’re willing to do social things on the fly if asked.

Tkkrs acting like this is a “gotcha!” moment is not unlike Jkkrs acting when Jikook do something favorable, so this argument is kind of a moot point to me.

Wow that riled people up. I'm a Tae biased tkkr so believe me there was no insinuation there. You can find multiple such examples of each member doing fs for the fans on stage.

Neither am I spreading misinfo since I never said it was shown on the main camera. People's assumption is that "he wanted to ensure it's not on camera"...well ...how do we know that??...can be the absolute opposite...like I said it's very much possible that he was hoping the camera would focus on them because it would be cute. Most artists look at the small monitor on stage to see what the main cam is focussing on especially since it was his turn to sing. The logical conclusion is he would be hoping the cam would pan on him.
