Reposting some tags from the lovely @wyvernity because it's stuff I've really been wanting to talk about and this is the perfect chance :)

Fair warning: I was going to try and post some relevant context (esp on the dragon cousins) before I dug into this..... but then that devolved from one simple post to several long detailed ones, half of which are still in drafts. And frankly, I really want to post this right now!! Therefore, I'm going to leave this link and this link as supplemental reading, and if you have any questions, the comments/my dms are wide open :)

This actually had me doing a double-take because I haven't even been able to write about this yet, but Lance's/Lyra's "overworked Champion who's secretly a menace but pretends to be a good role model while smiling for the camera because if they don't they might have a crisis over their life choices" vs Clair's/Silver's "child prodigy raised to reflect well on their family turned resentful outcast who becomes a gym leader to spite their family's legacy and eventually nutures their respective communities in a way their families couldn't have ever managed" parallels truly do run deep >_>

Anywaysss, you're absolutely right that Silver would have an easier time talking to Clair, not just for the reasons listed (even though you're absolutely spot-on, I don't even need to elaborate on that part because you got it so right), but because Clair isn't afraid to kick Silver's ass when he needs it. Lance tries his best, he really does, but he doesn't always push Silver out of his comfort zone enough for fear of scaring him off. I think I mentioned it in the original tags, but Lance didn't really have any freedom growing up. like. at all. and he recognizes that Silver may have had a similar upbringing, so he tries to give Silver the space to speak up when he wants. Only problem being, Silver is a stubborn brat who would rather die than admit to being a Human Being and wanting Normal Human Things so he just bottles everything up instead. That's when Clair swoops in to roughhouse and trade insults, knock him down a peg or several if he needs, then force a hot chocolate in his hands and wrestle him down for a nice long heart-to-heart. Unsurprisingly, he responds much better to such a direct approach than being treated like he's a flight-risk. Both Lance and Clair are his biggest cheerleaders, but Clair's better at dealing with Silver sometimes because Clair is Silver.

So in the personal canon Lance is about 32ish at the start of HGSS? In his early-mid thirties at least. He joined the E4 at about 20 while running from his "duty" to the Dragon Clan, which was a huge at the time because everyone expected him to replace his grandfather as the clan's next elder. So for him to just up and leave like that? It left the whole clan in hysterics. For Lance, it was a semi-desperate attempt to escape the both the responsibility that had been looming for his shoulders since childhood and the guilt of benefiting from a system that had left his cousin in the dust and severely strained their relationship (this'll and more Lance backstory stuff will be expanded on in the future). However, it left him without any kind of real goal except for training his pokemon and doing League stuff. Then like seven entire years later when he's finally starting to question what he's doing with his life, the previous champion retires without warning (explained below vvv). Since the next League tournament is coming up soon, Lance is offered the title if no challengers manage to beat him. There is one person that comes close but forfeits at the last minute (which is a whole different thing that has to do with Red/Blue's story, but basically, a forfeit equals a win for the opponent) so he becomes Champion completely uncontested and throws himself into the position before he can spiral any longer.

Long story short, by the time Silver rolls around, Lance is deeply in need of a break and also a chance to reassess what he wants to do. Even if he didn't already have complicated feelings on fatherhood (might expand on this more during his headcanon post but basically his dad was badly disabled in a dragon taming accident and couldn't really raise him as a result) and if Silver actually wanted him to take on that role, he recognizes he isn't in a space to give Silver the full support that becoming a surrogate parent would entail. It's not until Silver's been living with him for a while and Lance is retired that he starts to genuinely entertain the idea of calling Silver family even though the kid's functionally been adopted since they nabbed him off the streets like a stray cat.

This is true to an extent, but I should mention that in personal canon, Lance actually had no idea what was going on with Giovanni. See, the Pokemon League as a whole is way more like a sports organization than any kind of government/enforcement institution, so they don't necessarily have the same power or access to information that something like the International Police would. To make matters worse, the extent of what the E4/gym leaders can do depended heavily on the champion (who depended on the higher-ups above them, and so on), and the previous champion was an extremely passive person. Yeah, they probably could have helped out with the Rocket situation since it was all over the news, they just kinda... didn't. Nor did they bother policing their gym leaders very closely.

Overall, the chain of events goes: E4 tensions are high behind the scenes due to clashing between the champion and Agatha (who is a highly driven person and despises the current champion as a result, which in turn affects how Lance handles matters as champion. side note but Lance and Agatha's relationship is so so important to me and I can't wait to dive into it at some point) -> Agatha resigns publicly and aggressively, causing media outbursts and a massive PR maneuver from the Pokemon League to save face -> Giovanni's involvement with Team Rocket becomes public after their fallout, causing another media blowout, and this time, the League makes the champion take the fall -> pressure from both inside and outside the League makes the champion resign -> Lance takes up the mantle.

Lance does greatly regret the fact that he could've done something if the circumstances were different, but instead of dwelling on the past, he uses this opportunity to shift his priorities. He's not done running from his personal problems yet (that would be too easy! :D ), but there's plenty of work to be done in restoring the Pokemon League's reputation, repairing trust within the Indigo League itself while also hiring new gym leaders/E4 members, and reworking the Indigo League's ladder of responsibilities.

Also, he absolutely got his ears yelled off by multiple parties for how he handled the Lake of Rage incident. No matter how capable he is nor how great his experience working with the Interpol, there was no good reason for him to charge headfirst into an enemy base with no backup/barely alerting the proper authorities. More than that, he let some random kid follow him inside only to immediately lose track of her (just the one---he kinda "forgot" to mention Silver's appearance). Even he can admit he was in the wrong on many fronts, but realizing what was going on with the Magikarp left him pissed and the Rockets happened to be a convenient outlet...

Silver doesn't need another father. He's already got one of those, technically, but the man turned out to be a weak, cowardly bastard who couldn't face his own problems let alone raise a child. The way he sees it, there's no need to set himself for more disappointment. He's got a roof over his head and food to eat, and that's far more than he could ever depend on in the last... however many years he'd been living on the streets. Lance and Clair are annoying as hell, but while he's training in the Dragon Den, he doesn't exactly have much room to complain. Not out loud, anyways.

Lance doesn't particularly want to be a dad either. He's already got too much responsibility on his plate as Champion, and this kid clearly needs so much more emotional support than he feels like he can provide. Simply convincing him to move into his guest room was enough of a struggle, and it only really worked because Lance had promised Silver he could "earn" his keep. What the hell is up with that, anyways? He's not sure what Silver's past looks like, and he's not about to go prying, but the bare minimum he can do is make sure he doesn't have to rough it out in the woods anymore. At least Clair seems to be having fun training him...

Clair is more than ready to be an aunt. The other two refuse to admit to caring for each other, but unlike them, she's not afraid of something as stupid as her emotions. The brat's slowly but surely been mellowing out during his training, and her idiot cousin has actually been taking care of himself for once in order to be a "good example." Silver has even caught on to calling Lance "old man" like she does, on account of those ugly-ass reading glasses the all-mighty Champion has to wear, and she couldn't be prouder. Best part is, she doesn't have to spend a dime except to treat the kid every so often! That's a win in her book if ever there was one.

dragon and history nerd raihan x art and pokemon battling nerd leon. thoughts?

Thank you for the ask!! I have a lot of thoughts on these two, SPECIFICALLY in the realm of their interests outside of battling (even though with Leon I think that can get a bit muddled). But I'll put them under a read more since it might get long >:3c

With Raihan, once I started looking into him as a character more, I found his fascination and love of history in the canon parts of the story (which to me always fall in the game and manga, as the anime does deviate and seem to have its own canon), and clearly he has a reverence and interest in Galarian history, despite battling in the tapestry vault. I've always pictured him as the sleeper intellect of the group, where it's obvious with someone like Sonia, but Raihan rolls up to the function listing off Galarian history facts like it's a Top 10 video. Honing in on that, I personally think Raihan's an architectural nerd kind of guy, where he's interested in Galar's historical castles, buildings, their style changes through the eras, ect. And of course this guy is the Dragon Type guy to end all Dragon Type guys. I don't think anyone who isn't locked in on every single aspect of how they work would also be able to manipulate the weather like that, while also giving other gym leaders, notably Kabu, help and recommendations on other Pokemon that aren't Dragon Types (they're Tor-colleagues!!). How that looks has been warped by my many hours of fic reading and talking with @beammeupbroadway about the subject, but I genuinely think he's interested mainly in two aspects: 1. the preservation of Dragon Type habitats in Galar and 2. ethical breeding and raising of Dragon Types for rehabilitation, training, or release into the wild. Raihan prides himself on the care and upkeep of his dragons, spending a lot of his free time dedicated to further research of that topic, all so he can keep up to date with it. I'm also a pretty big proponent of Raihan being the kind of guy who lets his Pokemon free roam around his living space, as it's also their space, and therefore it's a very dragon type friendly place.

Also, I know the ask says that Leon is the art nerd, but I genuinely think that's more Raihain, though I think Leon has an appreciation for it (I'll get into that). Raihan's thing is partly to do with his love of history and architecture, which turned into a deep appreciation and understanding of art, and Galarian artistic movements, while also being the selfie/Pokegram guy. As an example:

The back of his League Card made me laugh the first time I read it, because I do think he takes very stereotypical artsy pictures, uploads them, and confuses people because I don't think people quite get the vision or reference he's making.

For Leon, battling nerd goes way beyond just being on the pitch. I think canon has my back for that, with the Battle Tower, the two tournaments he's organized, and just his general love of the sport of it all. And, for once, I will credit the anime with showcasing that, where his battle with Ash was one of the few times I think it got Leon's characterization pretty well. More than that, Leon to me found his love of battling early, adapts easily, and at least always seems eager to watch a match, if not participate himself. I know Twilight Wings shows Hop watching reruns of matches, but I think Leon would as well. Sometimes his own, but often older matches, when they were first being recorded. Depending on how far back Mustard was Champion, some of those old matches (though Pokemon tech has always been something I'm iffy about in the timeline, and have been since I was a young kid). It's something he's genuinely hype about, and something he loves, to the point his experiences with Rose and being Champion couldn't kill that for him, and it's part of why I love him as a character. Cycling back to the art thing, I don't personally see Leon as an art nerd exactly, but I think he appreciates art. Kind of guy to like weird pieces of art in a museum and get weirdly attached to them. Museum dates between the two is just Raihan telling Leon why a painting is historically significant, and Leon staring at it like he's rewiring his brain. But, if you ask my opinion on his other big hobby, I think he's an avid reader. As Champion I don't think he had time for it, and I have a whole other tangent I'll save about my thoughts on his education, but I think he loves reading. If it's in book form, the topic could almost not matter, he would probably read it if it's well written.

How this all comes together? Both of them as a couple? First off, I don't think they stop talking, ever. They say goodnight, snuggle in bed, but one of them is still rattling on about whatever thing is stuck in their brain until sleep takes them. Second, when I think of them in my mind palace, they're always partaking in their hobbies together. Raihan is cleaning his dragons, caring for them, Leon is right there helping him, learning all that he can about it. Leon is working out his latest battle line up for whatever he wants to test out, Raihan is the guinea pig, happily, each and every single time. They're sitting in the sun, Leon reading his book and Raihan is posting his latest batch of pictures. Together, I think they have a lot of angst potential, but at the end of the day I think they settle into life where once they figure out how to channel all of the years of being made to be rivals and opposite the other, they come together in a harmony that works. I always picture them on very secluded dates, Raihan dragging Leon out to check on the dragon nests, or Leon begging Raihan to go get lost with him, or in those museums looking at old shit because why not? They have the time, each other, and they've spent years getting to know the other in battle, why not give the same energy and determination in life?

Honestly, going further in on this, my headcanon for Raihan, when he stops being a gym leader, is that he becomes a History Professor of some flavor. That isn't original, but I agree with it full stop. And I think Leon keeps up his battling facilities until it stops being fun for him, whenever that is. And they support the other, and it's nice to think about <3

Reading reviews of the Argonautica on Goodreads was so funny because wdym y'all are mad at the Argonauts for -checks notes- being afraid of scary things and -reads further- missing their home??

Being a sailor is already objectively one of the worst things you can be considering how indifferent, hostile and inhospitable the ocean is to human life but then you add the fact that almost NONE of the Argonauts were career seamen anyway (some, like Atalanta, may have never even seen the sea before) and that a lot of them were kings or princes, noblemen who generally didn't do a lot of hard labour in the day to day and like, of course they're going to be miserable confined to a ship day in, day out, in uncharted waters with none of the luxuries or pastimes they've grown accustomed to??

I know people generally regard Book 3 as where things "get good" because that's where Medea is introduced but Book 3's catharsis only works because it's the result of months and months of endless open water, brief scraps of reprieve and trials to GET to Colchis in the first place. Sorry the story called "the Voyage of the Argo" isn't an action filled campaign where all the super badass children of the gods fuck women and kill monsters ig???

Fun fact: if you take on the Paldean Gym Leaders in the objectively best order (which I didn’t in either version oh well) the genders of each pair of Kalos Gym Leader and Paldean Gym Leader are the same in each version - the first (Viola and Katy), third (Korrina and Iono), sixth (Valerie and Ryme) and seventh (Olympia and Tulip) gym leaders are female and the second (Grant and Brassius), fourth (Ramos and Kofu), fifth (Clemont and Larry) and eighth (Wulfric and Grusha) gym leaders are male. In addition, out of the five pairs of gym leaders between Kalos and Paldea where they share a type, three of them are in the same spot based on this order (Bug-type Gym Leaders Viola and Katy are first, Psychic-type Gym Leaders Olympia and Tulip are seventh and Ice-type Gym Leaders Wulfric and Grusha are eighth). And as a bonus the second gym leaders both have cool hair that matches their types well. And the Grass and Electric gym leaders are always next to each other in that order plus the Grass Gym Leaders are among the oldest gym leaders of their region (Ramos almost certainly, Brassius probably younger than Ryme and maybe Kofu) and the Electric Gym Leaders are among the youngest gym leaders of their region (Clemont is around the same age as Viola, Grant and maybe Korrina but probably the youngest between them, Iono definitely). Oh yeah also the Psychic cities both begin with A and the Electric cities both begin with L

The first fact means that both regions have an equal gender ration for their gym leaders. In addition, they both also have equal gender rations for their Elite Four members (I believe they’re the only regions where both of these are true all the time so far though I might be forgetting something. Alola and Galar automatically don’t count because Alola doesn’t have Gym Leaders and Galar doesn’t have an Elite Four. Kanto, Hoenn and Unova are also probably excluded because they all change their lineup at some point (although it doesn’t change the gender ratio in Hoenn but then they also have Tate and Lisa so that overcomplicates stuff too. It also doesn’t change the overall gender ratio in Kanto but it does change the individual ones for Gym Leaders and Elite Four members)) although only the first and third members line up if you take on the Kalos Elite Four in order. Also both regions have female champions (and the only reason the fandom doesn’t consider either to be their least favourite is because no one can remember Trace 😭 justice for Diantha, Geeta and Trace! And by that I mean from the fandom, not Game Freak. It’s not Diantha’s fault she was too busy to beat Team Flare and kick them out of Kalos for good, Geeta’s fault she decided to make her ace a Pokémon that should be sent out as soon as possible just because she loves it so much or Trace’s fault he doesn’t want to get himself and you imprisoned for starting a physical fight only to plead innocent so only the player gets locked up (yeah this is something I think RGBY era Blue would do)) and because Larry takes a spot as both a Gym Leader and a member of the Elite Four that means Kalos has a slightly more even gender ratio for its league overall but both have more women than men. Additional fun fact (yep, I love comparing Kalos and Paldea and PLZA just gives me a bigger excuse to do it) - Kalos makes you take on the Gym Leaders in order but allows you to take on the Elite Four in any order while Paldea allows you to take on the Gym Leaders in any order but makes you take on the Elite Four in order. Oh yeah also there’s a Steel-type Elite Four member in both regions and both regions end their Elite Four with a Dragon-type trainer

Time and the Deity

I am thinking of a land saved by a little boy, that saved a little boy.

Termina watched the stranger soothe the pains of another child gone, and gave him another song, another bit of magic. He acted to save. Termina's heroes were dead or dying, so the land gave them to the boy to strengthen him, to reforge a new living hero.

And he blossomed in this, collected such happiness, dragged the land back from the brink again and again and again, until he could save everyone. Until he and the land and the power shaped a deity, and did save everyone that had poured life into them.

And that deity is Termina too - it's people, their gratitude. Gratitude so divine it could cleanse a demon- or change a human into more.

But then the boy left Termina. And the deity is not known in Hyrule, not needed in Hyrule. The hero child isn't either.

Come back home, the god in mask calls. Come back to Termina. We need you. Why did you leave?

The child says nothing and ignores the call. He is looking for someone else. Someone that left him without a word.

But eventually, years later, he needs the god again- he puts the mask back on and draws a divine sword.

The enemies fall at his feet. And then his feet step over the bodies, moving back towards Termina. He cannot stop, he cannot turn the direction of home, the ranch, his wife and life there now- the god of Termina can move once more, and he is going back.

So the hero, no longer a child, cuts the godhood off him.

He can't put the mask back on, ever. If he does he will be whisked away to another world, and he won't come back. It's a beautiful world, Termina, one that he loves and is grateful to- but he chose to leave. After everything he has lost, he will not lose that too.

Kind of a rant with full offense but I genuinely despise all the hate Geeta gets as a champion. Yes her battle was a pushover. You have exactly 1 fire type which could totally be your token “overleveled starter” and she’s basically done for. But as a character? She’s not that bland— not from everyone else’s standpoints. Specifically the gym leaders.

First of all, everyone forgets she’s not even the final battle of the Victory Road storyline. Second of all, the fact that in the post game when you rematch all the gym leaders, many of them seem to react somewhat brashly thinking that you are Geeta (as far as I remember. Cause like. I think they’re supposed to have some sort of meeting I guess but Geeta sends you to take care of matters instead.) Many of them mention Geeta having a weird aura— a bewitching aura even (quote taken specifically from gym leader Tulip.) and she seems to rub a lot of the gym leaders the wrong way mentally. People seem to forget that she’s blatantly supposed to be a character shrouded in mystery but everyone and their mom wanna pin the blame on the rock flower she sends at the end of her battle for why she’s a bad champion. Y’all are focusing on the wrong material. Yes, her battle is pretty decently hyped and is a let down because yeah, she’s got a weird ass team and doesn’t use Kingambit or Glimmora’s ability the “right way” and that “Gamefreak doesn’t know how to make a good game” as if most of y’all weren’t crying at the mere concept of Arven’s whole motive for his storyline. Y’all ain’t slick.

Glimmora as her ace is genius. Not because of the battle standpoint— in that regard, it’s of course used very poorly considering it’s hazard setting gimmick. This is introducing the importance of this Pokémon and the lore of Paldea as a whole. Glimmet and Glimmora have something to do with the origins of Area Zero. The way it’s found in large abundances— the emphasis on the Pokémon in general in the endgame. It’s supposed to display it’s importance and not much else. Maybe even give way to whatever is going on in the DLC. It’s called “The Hidden Treasures Of Area Zero” for goodness sake! I firmly believe that when the DLCs come out, we will be getting some major answers to some questions. Why does she battle so carelessly? Why does she emit such a bewitching aura? Why is Nemona oblivious to this? Why is Geeta just… like that? What! Is! Geeta’s! Deal!?

Geeta is a character with so much opportunity for open speculation. She is a character we are supposed to be theorizing on. She’s a character we are supposed to be learning more about as time goes on.

But all y’all wanna focus on her easy ass battle. Hmph.

For me it's always going to be people who keep Pokémon without any thought as to their enrichment and needs. You do not need a fucking Arcanine, you live in a studio apartment and don't walk more than a block a day. You think you want a Gardevoir but are you okay with having an unknowable creature reading your thoughts every waking moment of the day? Even while you do... the nasty?

It drives me crazy because people see a Champion and think they have the time, energy, money, and space necessary to raise a Dragon type. Unless you have generational wealth, let me spell it out for you: you do not have the funds for a Dragon type. And yes! Charizard is on that list, guys! You can't even afford to feed yourself!

Laugh all you want but I'm serious. I have heard of someone who is living with a MR. MIME like it's her HUSBAND!!!! That's fucking GROSS. These are creatures that TRUST us and NEED us.

Did you know that most Ponyta prefer to be in a herd? Are you going to have the space for that? Did you know that if you don't properly care for certain fire species their flame goes out? Sure, they're cute when they're small: but unless you're a rancher or a Gym Leader... I'm sorry. You're gross to me if you think otherwise. I hate people like that.

And for the record, rat and bug Pokémon are very valuable from an ecological standpoint. They hold an extremely important niche. People like you would rather they be hunted to extinction because they're pests, not pretty. It's disgusting.
