Fantasy Month :Yokai Monsters 100 Monsters

For this review we shall look at a spooky fantasy film that looks at Japanese folklore ,Yokai Monsters:100 Monsters

in this 1968 film,Reimon Tajimaya (Takashi Kanda ) is a landownere who plans down to tear down a tenement as well as a shrine to make room for a brothel,but he and his henchmen are doomed cause he refused to do a ritual to keep away the Yokai

So this is the first in a trilogy of Yokai Monster movies and I think I will have to check out the other films (AS well as two reboots by Takashi Miike ,but apparently those films also toss in characters from Daimajin and Teito Monogatari so I'm gonna have to see installments of those series before I see those two ) cause this film was mostly fun

Now its not perfect ,will be honest I didnt care about the people in the tenament and Tajimaya's henchmen are just evil .Honestly my favorite character was Tajimaya's childlike adult son Shinkichi who befriends one of the Yokai that is an umbrella monster and Tajimaya himself was wonderfully hateable as a villain .As a result I did find the film dull in places

However anytime the Yokai were involved the film came alive ,brought to life through costumes,makeup and puppetry.The one I found the most terrifying is the giant laughing splitmouthed lady face ,though other highlights are the viscerally disturbing faceless people ,the adorable umbrella monster and the genuinely impressive long necked woman (I legit am puzzled how they did that effect in 1968) .I also am just a big fan of supernatural comeuppances so these evil bad guys getting driven mad by monsters is fun .The final scene is also just a hoot

Its not perfect,but it was fun.The monsters made it worth it
