SAINT OF THE DAY (May 8)

Peter, usually known as Peter of Tarentaise, was a Cistercian monk who served as the Archbishop of Tarentaise (as Peter II) from 1141 until his death.
He was born in 1102 on a farm near Saint-Maurice-l'Exil, not far from the Cistercian Bonnevaux Abbey.
His father often offered hospitality to the monks when they had to leave the monastery on business.
At the age of 20, he entered the Cistercian Order and convinced his family to enter along with him.
His two brothers and his father entered the religious community of Bonneveaux with him, and his sister also followed their example and became a religious.
Ten years after he entered, Peter was sent to found a new house in the Tarantaise mountains near Geneva, Switzerland.
Here, he opened a hospital that also served as a guest house for those travelling through the mountains.
He was appointed as Archbishop of Tarantaise in 1142. He wanted to decline the post and remain where he was happiest — as a Cistercian monk.
He reluctantly accepted, however, because of the urging of St. Bernard and the other monks in his order, seeing their insistence as the will of God.
On his accession to the episcopacy, he reformed the diocese and set about providing education and distributing food to the poor, a tradition called the "May Bread," which lasted until the French Revolution in 1789.
He performed many miraculous healings during that time.
It seems he was never able to banish his longing for the monastic life he left behind.
After 13 years as archbishop, he fled to a Cistercian abbey in Switzerland disguised as a lay brother and lived there for a year until he was discovered and forced by his superiors in the order to return to Tarantaise.
During the fractious rife between the anti-pope Victor and the true Pope, Alexander III, St. Peter was one of the only major voices in the Church openly supporting the claim of Pope Alexander, even against the emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
Recognizing his courage, loyalty and holiness, Pope Alexander III thought him to be the ideal peacemaker between King Louis VII of France and Henry II of England.
He died of an illness on 14 September 1174, shortly after meeting and unsuccessfully trying to reconcile the two kings.
He was canonized by Pope Celestine III on 10 May 1191.

Hi! Happy birthday!!

I could talk about my cat all day, but let's have cows instead! The lady in the foreground is of the Abondance breed, and the one in the middle ground is a Tarentaise (also called Tarine). These breeds originate from the french Alps, in the valleys of the same names. They are "rustic" breeds, able to graze the high pastures of the Alps in the summer. (The white peaks in the background is la chaîne du Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps!)
A cow of these breeds produces about 5000 kg of milk per year on average. This milk is rich in fat and protein, which makes it perfect for making regional cheeses such as Beaufort, Reblochon, or tomme d'Abondance. Some cheeses, like Beaufort, have a "summer" version made entirely from summer milk collected from cows in those high pastures . Because the flora up there is so different, the cheese has a different taste!
Hi friend! Thank you for the good wishes and the fantastic photo and facts! I am extremely pleased to learn about these delightful cow breeds and their season-specific cheese!
Question: have you tried the summer cheese alongside the regular cheese and if so can you taste the difference? Wait, I know your job involves cows but does it also involve cheese tasting???
Also, the photo is displaying properly now, but I need you to know that this is what happened when I went into my inbox on mobile:

Not sensitive or abusive cows!! Gasp! 🤣
Anyway, thank you again for this supremely lovely message.

Savoie Olympique 1992 por Jean-Marc Frybourg Por Flickr: During the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville, Savoie, France (in the French Alps), many additional passenger trains were organized for the event. Here is one of them. It is a Satolas – Savoie Olympique shuttle. It served the Lyon Satolas “Saint Exupéry” airport - Albertville - Bourg-Saint-Maurice line. The picture was shot in Landry, on the Altbervtille to Bourg-Saint-Maurice line, also called the Tarentaise line. Tarentaise is the name of the upper Isère River valley. Landry is the last station before the end of the line. The usual itinerary starts from Lyon however for the Olympic Games, the additional shuttles started from the airport. These shuttles were push-pull trains. The locomotive is one of the ubiquitous French “BB Jacquemin”. This one, the BB-25240, belongs to the dual voltage 25200 class subseries. The village in the background is Bellentre, which belongs to The La Plagne Tarentaise town community, a major ski resort. It sits right above the “Nationale 90” highway, a road often blocked by traffic jams on winter vacation weekends, as this is the main itinerary to the many ski resorts in the area. Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans, France (No. 3)
The Isère's course measures 286 kilometers (178 miles) and runs through a wide variety of landscapes: from its source near the Italian border in the western Alps, it crosses the Pays de Savoie and the Tarentaise Valley, cuts between the Chartreuse and Belledonne mountain ranges, follows the Vercors Massif, passes through the Dauphiné province, and finally meets with the Rhône at the foot of the Vivarais.
The Isère initially merges with one of the Rhône's diversion canals, built for navigational purposes, at Pont-de-l'Isère. At the southern tip of La Roche-de-Glun (a commune on an island formed by the canal), the Isère Dam drains part of the water back into the Rhône and permits the Isère to continue its course alone until it passes through the Bourg-lès-Valence Dam and reaches its final junction with the Rhône.
