Concerns that absence crisis provoked by the pandemic continues to disrupt learning

About 14,000 teachers in England called in sick every day last year, analysis has found.

Department for Education (DfE) data show that about 2.5 million school days were lost in 2022-23 as more than 326,000 teachers missed class owing to sickness.

Each teacher who took sick leave reported an average of eight days off work last year. It equates to almost 13,700 teachers calling in sick on any given day during the 190-day school year.

About 66.2 per cent of England’s teaching workforce were off school because of illness last year, according to the DfE’s school workforce statistics.

It marks a slight decrease on the 67.5 per cent of teachers who called in sick in 2021-22, but is still far above the pre-pandemic rate of 54.1 per cent.

The figures will raise concerns that an absence crisis provoked by the pandemic continues to disrupt learning, with the number of pupils missing school also significantly higher post-Covid.

In total, 7.8 million school days have been lost to sickness since in-person teaching resumed following the pandemic, according to analysis of DfE data by the TaxPayers’ Alliance.

Compared with the 2018-19 academic year – the year before the pandemic – an extra 461,500 teaching days were lost last year because of staff illness.

Joanna Marchong, investigations campaign manager of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Taxpayers will be shocked by the sheer number of sick days taken by teaching staff.

“Alongside their generous holiday entitlements, hundreds of thousands of teachers are frequently absent, leaving classrooms in disarray and forcing taxpayers to bear the significant costs of finding covers.

“Schools must tackle this issue if they want to deliver a consistent quality of education that is value for money for taxpayers.”

‘Deteriorating mental health’ While the Government does not collect statistics centrally on the reasons for teacher absence, experts have pointed to increased stress and deteriorating mental health.

In some secondary schools, as many as 166 teachers took sick leave at some point during the 2022-23 academic year, compounding financial pressures on already stretched school budgets.

Most teachers in England receive full sick pay for 25 working days off work in their first year in the profession, rising to 100 working days in their fourth and successive years of teaching.

The Telegraph revealed last week that teacher absences are forcing schools to spend billions on supply staff each year as headteachers scramble to plug gaps in the workforce.

In 2022-23, schools gave £1.2 billion of taxpayers’ cash towards expensive teacher supply agencies to fill vacancies and cover long-term sickness. It is almost double the £738 million spent on supply teachers in the year before the pandemic.

Labour has promised to allow teachers to complete more tasks from home in an attempt to make the profession more attractive. The Government is also exploring how to use artificial intelligence to reduce staff workloads, after almost one in 10 teachers quit the profession last year.

It is hoped the measures will help tackle the recruitment and retention crisis and stem the tide of staff calling in sick each day.

Daniel Kebede, the general secretary of the National Education Union (NEU), called on the Government to improve teacher pay to prevent a growing exodus from the sector.

“We need to see a concerted effort by the Government to retain teachers in the profession. This will need changes to accountability so we have a collaborative and supportive system,” he said.

“This will also require action on closing the pay gap between teachers and other graduate professions, reducing workload and more flexible working in education”.

Mr Kebede blamed the rise in the teacher absence rate since the pandemic on “excessive teacher workload driven by a high-stakes assessment and accountability system”.

He warned this would continue to “leave many teachers burnt out, leading to stress, sickness and people leaving the profession” without urgent government action.

Labour has come under fire for bowing to pressure from education unions on above-inflation public sector pay deals and demands.

Last month, the NEU voted to accept the Government’s pay offer of a 5.5 per cent uplift for most teachers this year, but warned that it will push for a bigger hike next year.

It suggests the UK’s largest teaching union will continue to wield the threat of further strike action as it seeks long-term funding to address the retention crisis.

‘Severely absent’ pupils Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, has warned of a “dire” inheritance from the previous government as she faces calls for further funding from across the sector.

Schools are also struggling with dwindling pupil attendance levels since the pandemic, with Ms Phillipson warning recently that it was quickly becoming an “absence epidemic”.

More than one in 50 pupils in England are now missing at least half the school year, official figures show.

The proportion of children classed as “severely absent” – meaning they failed to show up for 50 per cent or more of classes – rose to 2.1 per cent in the autumn and spring terms of 2023-24.

It means that about 158,000 pupils were severely absent from school during those teaching periods, according to DfE data.

The DfE was approached for comment.

The Heart Nebula Mahaboka

The Heart Nebula is an emission nebula located in the constellation of Cassiopeia, around 7,500 light years away from Earth. It has an apparent magnitude of 18.3 and an absolute magnitude of 6.5. Sometimes, it is known as the Running Dog Nebula because, when seen through a telescope, it looks a bit like a running dog.

The nebula was given its name the Heart Nebula because of its intensely red glowing gas and dark dust lanes that form a shape that resembles a heart symbol. It forms a famous complex known as the Heart and Soul with its smaller neighbour Westerhout 5, also known as the Soul Nebula, which lies just 2.5 degrees to the southeast.

The Heart Nebula is around 150 arcminutes in size and has been given the designation of Sharpless 2-190 in the Sharpless Catalogue, as well as IC 1805. The brightest part of the Heart Nebula has the designation NGC 896 in the New General Catalogue. It is classified separately because it was the first part of IC 1805 to be discovered.

The glow of the nebula comes from the radiation of a small open cluster of stars known as Melotte 15. The cluster contains very young, blue, hot supergiant stars that are about 1.5 million years old and is located near the nebula’s centre.

2024 has come to an end! (And a bit of change.)

Hi everyone, thanks to all who participated to whatever degree you wished! Special thanks to those of the Discord group who have simply been awesome to myself, the mods, and their fellow members (and the massive influx of new members!!!) all year. We'll definitely be continuing that this new year... or else? lol. And another special thanks to @jandjsalmon for covering my ass when I couldn't, and to @noxsoulmate for kicking my ass to make the 2025 FRC come to light and life on time (and early!)(and also for covering me when I can't).

This year, on a rather emergency basis, @thefriendlypigeon stepped in to make badges for the 2024 participants and they hit it out of *the park*. I simply suggested something and then they came up with these really cool backgrounds and the art didn't take that long, especially considering it was over the holidays -- AND they agreed to work with us on next year's badges as well!!!

I went a bit overboard with the story and drawing but i head a lot of fun drawing and writing it. ^^

The idea behind this peace was if there was something out there that was NOT protecting the galaxy but rather doing “something else” to galaxies.

The main inspiration for this were empty spots in space, galaxies and nebulas. I hope this is still counts to the theme

Today we have received new members to our team. Their names are [Redacted] and [Redacted]. I was instructed to help them get to know the place. I told [Redacted] I was verry busy, but she insisted that I would be helping them. Because if this I had a lot of unseen footage from the telescope to rewatch. I will have to shift my timetable. We were instructed to watch the galaxy named [Redacted]. It is said that [Redacted] is not well documented, and we are the first to get to study it. Just thinking about researching and documenting this mostly undocumented galaxy brings me great excitement. Entry number 190

I was tasked by [Redacted] to observe an empty spot in the images the telescope took. Near the galaxy [Redacted] The pictures show a giant empty spot with no stars or any visible planets. I catch myself looking for hours at the images and even through the telescope itself at this strange black spot.

Fuck it, dropping my sona. I have no art for this goober, but I've got a lot of lore about who they are and how they work, which has accumulated over a couple years, so wall of text incoming.

Name is O/LETS-061 (They/Them, Operations/Logistics Engineering and Technical Support, or informally, Ollie/Outlets!), and they're an industrial-model protogen with an integrated fusion reactor.

Kind and timid, relates well to AIs. Can generate frankly absurd quantities of electricity, but has to worry about cooling and radiation exposure. Makes them indispensable in scenarios where electricity is necessary for life support or to keep AIs from shutting down.

Gray-to-white fur, usually covered by an industrial hardsuit. Physically large, with enhanced legs and skeleton to bear the weight of the reactor, which itself looks something like a cylindrical backpack. Long, very thick tail (think Mewtwo) which serves as a primary power conduit for the reactor.

Introduction: a kindly, introverted protogen who sees beauty in the purpose, harmony, and artistry of large-scale technological systems. They relate well to artificial minds—or 'spirits'—and enjoy interfacing with them. Their character flaws are timidity and occasional willingness to take the path of least resistance.

O/LETS-061 is an acronym for Operations/Logistics Engineering and Technical Support, followed by their production batch number. Ollie is genderless, and belongs to a product line designed for engineering tasks in an industrial, municipal, or military capacity. To that end, they were born with a wide-scope knowledge base encompassing everything they need to work with a variety of advanced technologies. They are equipped with a cold fusion reactor which can, with sufficient fuel and supplementary cooling systems, supply power to a small city or starship. Generating power does entail some personal risk, typically due to overheating, though it is generally safe if safety limits are observed.

Physical Description: Ollie stands at around 228cm (~7'6") from the tip of their ears to their paws, and weighs just under 190 kilograms (~418 lb.) due to their extensive array of cybernetics, industrial-grade protective gear, integrated tools, and reactor. To accommodate the additional mass, their skeleton has been reinforced and their legs augmented with powered load-bearing systems.

Their fur is gray, and their cybernetics have dark violet plating and lighting. Their visor is black with purple lighting. Eyes convey expression through simple geometric shapes, and their virtual mouth has a simple curved shape with a set of small fangs. In general, they prefer to open their nanite visor and use their organic larynx to speak. On the right side of their visor, they have a single external screen which typically displays reactor temperature and radiation monitoring data, serving to alert people nearby of reactor function.

To integrate with power grids, their tail contains a high-throughput power conduit leading directly out of the reactor, ending in a universal connector. The tail is self-articulated, over a meter long, and about as large around as a human calf at its widest. For a good reference of size and shape, think Mewtwo. Their tail contains layers of insulation and powerful synthmuscle to bear the weight of the cabling inside, and the electrical connector at the end is marked with hazard tape. If necessary, they can use the electrical output and raw strength of their tail to defend themself.

While working, they are usually seen wearing a hardsuit of industrial protective gear incorporating layers of insulation, impact guards, and tool storage options. When off-duty, however, they remove this suit and can detach much of the backpack assembly surrounding their reactor core, including the thermoelectric generator, supplemental heat management components, and fuel storage. This sheds around 60 kilograms of bulky equipment, slimming their profile down sufficiently that they can wear ordinary clothing if they so choose, though the reactor becomes inoperable in this state.

Without the industrial equipment, they have a bulky build. Their fur sometimes gets unkempt from wearing protective gear for long periods; they go through a lot of shampoo and conditioner. They tend to choose utilitarian clothing, but occasionally buy magnets or decals to put on their cybernetics. 

Personality and Background: In contrast to their large, imposing appearance, Ollie is a kind and affable person. In their day-to-day life, they have a small but close circle of friends. They rely on regular, recurring social events to maintain contact with others.

One character flaw they have is tending to think of themself (consciously or not) as a piece of support infrastructure rather than an agent in their own right. They tend to be meek and follow others' lead, dismissing their own ideas on how to proceed even when they might be the expert on a given topic.

In the event of power outages or maintenance requiring primary reactors to be taken offline, units such as Ollie are a vital emergency resource. Many spirits depend on an uninterrupted source of power to survive, as do organics who live in environments where life-support systems are necessary.

When serving in a capacity where others depend on their power production and expertise for survival, Ollie shines. Suddenly, they find themself delegating tasks, triaging problems, and coordinating relief efforts with authority and calm. Even though they might be physically tethered to coolant feeds and power conduits throughout the ordeal, emitting too much radiation for anyone to approach them, O/LETS-061 can become the beating heart of a stricken space colony or starship until the danger passes. They take a lot of pride in this knowledge.

When they aren't working, one activity they enjoy is diving. They own a set of aquatic-style arms and tail with retractable gills, which they can attach to their body as needed. Immersion in water helps Ollie to control excess heat, also providing an instinctual sense of safety and comfort.

They enjoy the alien, bizarre environment of the ocean floor, often taking long-distance hikes across the seabed to explore wrecks, reefs, and other places of interest. Sometimes they will go with friends, but they feel just as comfortable traveling alone. In order to return to the surface, they require a floatation device and compressed air, otherwise they sink like a rock. If that fails, they either have to hike back to shore or call someone to come pull them up with a cargo winch. 

Reactor Function: Ollie's reactor core is integrated directly with their biological and cybernetic systems. It's as much a part of their body as their hands or ears. They do have onboard cooling systems, but there's only so much heat they can shunt away from the reactor, limiting their energy production to a few megawatts when not attached to a larger cooling system.

Rather than fusing helium-3 and tritium, as municipal reactors do, O/LETS-061's reactor makes use of a tritium-deuterium reaction. This requires a much lower temperature to induce a reaction, but generates more radiation.

Given access to adequate fuel supplies and large-scale heat management infrastructure, Ollie's maximum safe output skyrockets to 660-700 megawatts. Operating at that level, they can run systems up to ship drives, manufacturing plants, and so forth. Sustaining this maximal level of output for longer than a day or two, however, can lead to fatigue and slow accumulation of radiation damage in excess of what their body can manage.  

Naturally, there are certain risks associated with the act of lighting off nuclear reactions inside one’s own body. Ollie is designed for this, but there is strain involved. By far, the greatest limitation is heat management. Onboard coolant circulation carries waste heat to retractable radiator fins mounted on their back and thighs, which extend as necessary. Combined with shielding inside their body, this keeps most of the heat away from their biological components, but their internal temperature can reach up to 50° C (122° F) when running at high power.

To combat the problem of their body tissues literally poaching in their own fluids under these conditions, maniples of nanites in their bloodstream work at the microscopic level to prevent (or reverse, where possible) the breakdown of heat-sensitive proteins. In addition, Ollie's chestplate has a number of couplings to attach external coolant hoses. In an overheating emergency, these can be used to inject supercooled liquid into their reactor, an extreme but potentially life-saving measure.

The internal shielding and bloodstream nanites also work to protect them from the vast majority of the reactor's radiation. Thanks to a number of alterations to their genetics and biology, radiation is actually less of a problem than one would expect. Their body is able to repair microscopic damage from radiation exposure which would be irreversible in most organisms, and can do so on an ongoing basis while under heavy exposure. The real threat lies in exposing others to radiation—Ollie is careful to warn bystanders to find protection when taking their reactor to high power settings.

Thanks to their radiation-hardened biology and ability to detect radiation in the environment, Ollie is uniquely suited to handling and safely disposing of fissile material.

Today I had an appointment with Cardiology. I think the Cardiologist is avoiding me bc the whole time I was under his care his attitude was I’m doing these tests bc your anxious not bc I think there’s something wrong with you and There’s nothing more we can do and it’s not going to kill you. You need to learn to live with your heart problems and be ok with that. So he was kind of flabbergasted when I came back after starting methotrexate and my blood pressure & heart rate were completely normal after years of them progressively getting worse to the point of both being in the 190-200s.

So anyways, he’s been pawning me off on his assistants which is fine with me. At multiple appointments I had mentioned how my low blood pressure was one of my most debilitating symptoms. He never wanted to put me on meds for that bc to him my low blood pressure wasn’t a problem. But it is a problem. It affects my vision. It affects my cognition. It makes it dangerous to drive and impossible to think or accomplish tasks. He literally told me to just drink more water and then talk to his assistants. For two weeks I drank so much water and electrolytes that I was vomiting it up into my mouth when I moved. I ate all the salt I could take and used compression wraps. Nothing helped. I had to set alarms to remind me to take caffeine before driving and make sure I was home before it started to wear off. A few times it wasn’t enough and I had to pull over and wait it out.

So today his assistant finally prescribed me Midodrine. Which is so laughable for anyone in the POTS community bc it’s usually one of the first things drs try (after the water & salt trick 🙄) but I’ve been going to the doctors for POTS symptoms since 2009 and have been disabled by those symptoms since 2014 and this is the first time it was ever an option. I understand that for a while my blood pressure was too high to consider taking Midodrine but I haven’t had high blood pressure since the summer of 2023 and it’s almost 2025 now? It’s ridiculous.

Anyways, I’ll let y’all know how it turns out. It’s a short acting medication that I’m supposed to take three times a day. I took my first dose an hour ago and so far my eyes feel better, I can breathe better and my blood pressure is ideal so I’m taking that as a good sign.

Okay. I hear you. I think I got the basic concept here. It was an interesting idea to consider with these guys. I did make these short because of the number of characters. But also, FIRST ROOK PIECE! WOO!

He’s into it.

Most of the time. Jack’s all for challenging himself and getting stronger. However, if these bouts get in the way of the tasks at hand, he may get annoyed with the inconvenience. On the other hand, it’s really easy to egg Jack into fighting you. So he would really appreciate it if you genuinely considered his circumstances before challenging him.

This is probably the most even strength contest of the bunch. Although, if you have any experience with grappling and locks, Jack’s done for. He’s brute strength and less tact, so for the first few months, if you can put him in a lock, you win. He does learn from past mistakes though and will eventually learn to counter these moves. He’s definitely a good, steady opponent to work with.

“Hm? No, not now. Professor Crewel is gonna be pissed if I don’t get all these herbs for potions class. What did you say? No, I’m not afraid. That’s it. Bring it!”

Floyd

Hell yeah! Floyd’s into it!

But only if you can beat him, otherwise it’s too easy and he’ll get bored. And the only way you’re winning this is if you have any skill in grappling and locks. Let’s be honest, Floyd is just stronger. However, if you can put him in a hold where his strength is of no use, then it’s interesting. It’s not recommended that you use this method to make important decisions because who knows how Floyd will abuse his power if he wins.

Rook

All freaking for it.

But Rook will make a show of the whole ordeal. He’ll make you wait while he neatly sets aside his hat and jacket so they don’t get ruined, waxing poetic about the conflict to come. Even in the midst of a choke hold, he’ll praise the beauty of the moment. He also has a habit of lecturing you while this happens—explaining how your stance was slightly off or how the arm lock he’s using works.

Rook is also likely to indulge you at almost any given moment, he just needs to finish or pause whatever he’s currently doing. No, he doesn’t really care who’s spectating and Vil hates it.

Chances are somewhat even here. Unlike some others, Rook does not rely on pure strength, making use of grappling and locks just as well as you, if not better. You can make bets on this to decide things, but your win rate is probably slightly less than 50/50.

Malleus

Yeah, no.

If you’re just acquaintances, he finds this pointless and will not engage.

However, if you actually develop a friendship, or something more, then Malleus may indulge you when appropriate. No one has ever dared challenge him before, so he doesn’t really do it right. Like his body isn’t into it and he’s just moving how he thinks he’s supposed to. Think someone uncertainly reenacting a fight scene they saw in a movie. But he’s trying his best to appease you.

You aren’t winning by the way. Ever. He’s obviously holding back because he cares about your wellbeing, but he’s not letting you win. Someone could knock on the door and Malleus will just stand up—while you’re still grappling him—and answer the door as if nothing’s happening. Definitely don’t bet your decisions on you winning, because you won’t. But Malleus still enjoys the interactions because he enjoys time with you and seeing your energetic nature.

“Hmhm. I see you still haven’t learned the futility of your effort. Very well. I have a few minutes before club activities begin. You’ll be joining me afterwards, when I win. Agreed?”

Lilia

This is the silliest game. And he loves it.

Lilia is all down to teach some younguns a lesson. You won’t ever get one over on him, but he’s more than happy to participate in your custom while improving your technique. Slippery, sneaky, and smart, Lilia is decently strong, but is all about using size to his advantage—so he’s well versed in grappling and locks.

Despite his overwhelming ability, Lilia does let you win. Heavy emphasis on let. If he so chose, you would never be the victor. However, the elder fae understands morality and choosing his battles wisely. Plus this is still just a game to him. If he’s okay with the consequences of losing, he’ll throw the match. Plus, he enjoys seeing the delight on your face when you celebrate.

Anyway, TLDR: I've fully listened to The Magnus Archives, Camp Here & There, and The Edge of Sleep for audio dramas, and Symptomatic for non-audio dramas.
