ok ok 2k25 goals intentions etc.:
daily, success threshold met at 183 days: journal, meditate, log my little habits and other countables, work out, drink 100 ounces of water, experience art, do some kind of mobility work even just a little bit of moving my butt on the foam roller, digital tidying of any kind, floss, write or work on a piece of writing even if it's not ready for writing (ykwim), no Scrolling before 10 p.m. (Intentional Posting such as this doesn't count) room re-set (a habit i had in 2023 decided i didn't need in 2024 and hugely missed once i had buried myself in a horrible pile i did not feel capable of tackling for like three months); 10k steps average for the year by 11:59 p.m. on december 31st
weekly: 5 Life Tasks Of Some Kind; try out weekly self-planning sessions although this is not a resolution because well what if i don't like it!
yearly: read 50 books; work about a thousand hours although this is not so much a "goal" as the result of me looking at my time tracking app and seeing if i can use this data to organize my life in a way that makes me feel less stressed about what is essentially my part-time job so i'm not gonna sweat the difference too much in either direction; i'm not gonna put my income goal on the internet but i do have one.
unquantified intentions: eat more vegetables/get to a place by the end of the year where i don't feel the need to resolve this again; be better about apartment tidiness maintenance tasks (an ounce of prevention...); be a more considerate and more proactive texter; keep working on showing up even when it's a little bit scary; i know i have writing as a daily goal but i'm also gonna say that an intention is to get to the end of the year feeling like i have a sense of how writing fits into my life as a regular practice instead of my historical feast or famine approach (which, to be clear, i don't think i'm ever going to be a nice normal Write Exactly 90 Minutes A Day gal.... so mostly i'm talking about avoiding the famines); keep jukeboxing; keep listening to new (generally and also to me) music; get back into/better at tarot
vibe: one other thing that came up when i was reflecting on 2024 was how much fucking time and mental energy i poured into being Totally Insane about how repulsive i am in many dimensions... this is not anything remotely new but i'm deciding now that i am over it and thus determining by executive decision that actually i am a hot fun genius and everybody awesome wants to be my friend.

Summary: Logan tasks himself with a full year of denial under a BDSM dynamic with Virgil, Remus, and Janus. Will he make it all the way to next year enduring all of their teasing? Who knows~
Read it on AO3!
A Foreword:
I am going to say this one time. This. Is. Fictional.
That means ITâS NOT REAL.
Iâm using this fic to explore what a 24/7 dynamic looks like in a FICTIONAL universe. I donât intend for this to be an accurate portrayal of BDSM and kink at all. Yes thereâs safewords, but theyâre rarely used, BECAUSE IâM WRITING ABOUT HOT FICTIONAL MEN THAT DONâT EXIST. AND I DO WHAT I WANT.
So be warned. Check the tags thoroughly before reading. I give a special warning to use of degradation and humiliation in this fic. It gets pretty intense and there wonât be a ton of written aftercare scenes. It is NOT nonconsensual, I assure you that Logan is loving every minute of whatâs being done to him and it is to be assumed that everything done happens consensually.
Again. Just wanna reiterate, this is not how real BDSM and kink dynamics work, those require intense discussion and communication which isnât seen much in this fic. Please take it at your own pace or skip chapters or donât read the thing if it makes you uncomfortable in a way you canât handle.Â
There will be content warnings with what each chapter contains in the notes beforehand, but take them to heart before reading.
If you enjoy it, thanks! Consider leaving a kudos, like, reblog, or comment!
If you donât, keep that shit to yourself!
Thank you for reading this, I hope you enjoy the story xx
New Year's Eve brought up many traditions for Logan and his partners. He was partial to reflecting on how heâd grown in the past year over a glass of wine, himself. Virgil took to sleeping in extra late so heâd be wide awake for the clock striking midnight. Remus bought fireworks of questionable legality. Janus used the holiday as an excuse to commit any sins to be atoned for come morning. In a way, this yearâs celebration would prove no different to the ones before it, but after thorough discussion from all involved parties, it would certainly be one to remember.
December 31st, 11:04 PM
âLast chance to back out, Lo.â Virgil stated as he attached the restraints to his loverâs wrists, âYouâre sure youâre still up for this?â
âFirst of all, this is hardly my last chance.â Logan countered nonchalantly, âI feel comfortable knowing if I safeword, that this will end and you all will care for me accordingly. Second of all, I am certain I want to go through with this. Not only do I want to challenge myself with this as a yearly resolution for personal growth regarding my own sexual boundaries, but also to flesh out the dynamic which weâve found ourselves in.â
âPut so eloquently for a man about to cry for mercy.â Janus hummed from beside him, stroking the exposed flesh of Logan's thighs.
âI believe I can save it at least until next week.â
âCareful, Logey-â Remus grinned from behind the tripod he was setting up, camera pointing towards his partner spread out on the bed, âOr we might just not let you come at all tonight!â
Logan shot him a look, âRemus, that is not the plan.â
âI know, I know, I just like to make you squirm.â He turned on the device, hitting the record button when he found the perfect angle to do so at, âWhy donât you recap the plan for the camera?â
After a steady breath while Virgil continued to restrain him to their bed, he turned towards the lens,
âToday is day zero of my journey through orgasm denial. I will be having one final orgasm tonight before a year of celibacy.â
âAh ah-â Janus corrected, âNot complete celibacy. We still get to play with you as much as we want.â
Logan just rolled his eyes, âCorrect. You three will be able to copulate with me as a means to your own end, but I will not be allowed to climax, myself.â
âOr touch or pleasure yourself in any way unless we allow you to.â Virgil added.
âYeah so you better enjoy this one while you can~â Remus moved to sit on the bed, scooting to be in between Loganâs legs.
On the nightstand, there was already a variety of objects waiting to be used that night. The first of which was a bottle of lube, which was promptly passed down to Remus. He grabbed Loganâs legs and threw them over his shoulders promptly, wasting no time spreading the lube over his fingers and pressing them against his hole. Being restrained, he couldnât shy away from the touch, not that he wanted to, but Remus was a bit rough with preparing him.
âWhy donât you go ahead and say all your rules while we get you ready, baby?â Virgil softly stroked his hair.
Logan sighed as two fingers were thrust into him and a hand was wrapped around his cock, Janus and Remus co-opting his pleasure.Â
âI-Iâm not allowed to come.â
âThatâs right, what else?â
âIâm not allowed to touch myself- ah!â Logan shouted as Janusâ hand twisted over his dick at the exact moment Remus forced in a third digit, âinâŚin any way that brings me pleasure~!â
âGood boy, keep going.â Janus hummed as he continued to stroke him.
âI-Iâll let my dominants, mmh, know when Iâm close.â
A wicked smile spread across Remusâ face as he spread his fingers to stretch him further, before pulling them out entirely, âYouâre gonna be so cute when youâre begging us to come and we refuse. Whatâs your last one, Lolo?â
A whine left his lips, bleeding into words, â-Iâll follow all orders given to me without argument or hesitation!â
Virgil suddenly pulled at his hair, eliciting a sharp gasp, âOnly four rules, this should be a piece of cake for you, L.â
âAnd we know how much you just adore following rules. If anything, this is a treat for you.â Janus pulled his hand away as well, leaning closer to his face to kiss his cheek, âWhat do you say when someone gives you a treat?â
Logan wanted to chase the sensation of Janusâ hand, but with an ungodly amount of self control forced himself to stay still. âThank you.â He managed.
After a bit of shifting around and stripping, they settled into their proper positions for the night. As previously discussed, Virgil would be fucking him, Remus would be riding him, and Janus would be using his mouth. He couldnât think of a better place to be than in between all his boyfriends, giving and receiving an almost incomprehensible amount of pleasure.Â
Remus was quick to straddle him, not wasting much time before slicking up his dick further and pushing it against his hole. The both of them let out moans as he took him fully, relishing the feeling of being filled again. Logan didnât typically top, so he welcomed the rare warmth wrapped around his length.
Virgil was next, spreading his legs once Remus was settled and lining up to fuck him. He could be slow and teasing when he wanted to be, but for now he slid in at a steady pace. He wanted to get to fucking him, but also make sure that Logan could feel every inch inside him. Once the tops of his thighs rested against the otherâs, he shifted forward further to share a deep kiss with Remus.Â
âHow does he feel, babe?â Virgil questioned, pressing his lips down the side of his loverâs neck.
âNot quite as big as you or Jannie, but I guess heâll be enough to get me off.â Remus returned cheekily.
Logan let out another weak moan as he felt the two of them shift. That earned a couple chuckles from his three partners.
Then, Janus knelt up by his head, âYou poor thing, I donât think you even realize what youâre getting yourself into.â He cooed, âAre you really ready for one last orgasm before a whole year of nothing but denial?
âYes, yes Master, I promise!â He said, sounding completely pitiful.
âDonât worry, darling,â Janus stroked himself a few times before pressing the head of his cock to Loganâs lips, âWeâll make sure you enjoy it.â
Logan opened his mouth for the other, who in turn slid into the warmth with a sigh. With everyone officially settled, they could begin to move.
Naturally, Remus lifted his hips up and down a few times, until he found a good angle to pleasure both himself and Logan. He ground down, holding onto Virgil for support as he did. He was never quiet in bed, proving true now even with them just beginning. Moans left his mouth as he sank down repeatedly on his length and used a hand to jerk himself off in the process.
Virgil gave a few thrusts into Logan then, savoring the way he felt around him. He adored having the man beneath him and fucking him, no matter if he wanted it sweet and tender or rough and fast. He groaned, biting his lip as he built up a steady rhythm.
âFuck, I donât know how he stays so tight with how much we fuck him.â He commented.
âBecause heâs a natural slut!â Remus added, sliding down his length once again.
âHe certainly is, why else would he want us to have this much control over him? He must need it.â Janus said, gripping Loganâs hair and thrusting down his throat.Â
Logan was in heaven. Remus clenching around him forced shocks of pleasure to course through him. Virgil picked up his pace and aimed to find his prostate with each thrust. Janus occupying his mouth made his mind float into the thick fog of subspace, making each and every sensation feel even more pleasurable than it already was. He wasnât going to last long like this.
They moved rhythmically, almost as one being. When Virgil slammed their hips together, Janus would force his cock deep into Loganâs mouth, and Remus would grind down against him repeatedly until he was seeing stars. Every touch added to his arousal, and it hardly took any time before he was itching for more.
Loganâs hand formed a loose gesture, with two fingers sticking out from his fist. It was his non-verbal sign that he was getting close.
âI can feel him leaking inside me.â Remus groaned, âCanât wait for him to fill me up!â
âSo soon? You better enjoy it.â Janus looked down at Logan still eagerly sucking him off through the feeling.
Virgil aimed directly into his prostate with every thrust, âCâmon, weâre close too baby, come for us one last time.â
Logan couldnât focus on any individual sensation with the assault on his body, all he knew was that the pressure was building fast. It could have been the way Janus was pulling at his hair, or the way Remus was riding him like his life depended on it, or the way Virgil sunk his whole length into him as he gripped his hips, but it was too much to hold back.
With a choked moan held back by the dick in his mouth, Logan toppled over the edge with wave after wave of blissful release. His muscles spasmed with the force of it, with his arms pulling at the restraints above him and vision going white from every sensation. He filled Remus, screamed around Janus and contracted around Virgil, triggering their approach to climax as well.Â
It was Remus who came next, stroking himself as he aimed for his own prostate with a final slam of his hips and riding out his orgasm as he spilled over himself and his partners. Virgil followed soon after, coming into Loganâs twitching hole and working himself through it. Janus climaxed last, rapidly thrusting into Loganâs mouth before pulling out and spilling over his face ceremoniously. The room was filled with the sounds of four panting men and the lingering smell of sex.
Remus hopped off of Logan and fell beside him, Janus following suit after glimpsing down to see his loverâs fucked out and come-covered face. He smirked, going to untie the restraints on his wrists. Virgil eased himself out of him carefully, debating whether or not to plug him up and keep him full of his seed just a little bit longer. Ultimately, he decided against it and went to grab a few things to clean up.
âYou still alive, Logie?â Remus nuzzled his head against the manâs shoulders.
âMhm.â Logan managed to get out, before a yawn overtook him, â âwas really enjoyable.â
âWeâre glad.â Janus reassured him while easing his arms down from the headboard, âLetâs take care of you now and weâll talk about what comes next tomorrow.â
As Virgil returned with some towels and water, he stopped to click off the camera recording them. Logan was cleaned by the three of them and cuddles ensued shortly after, with many words of reassurance and kisses in between.
At one point, Janus picked up their phone from the night stand and showed it to the other three, â12:06. Happy new year, my loves.â
âAnyone have any resolutions they wanna share?â Remus smiled down at Logan knowingly.
âHey, donât tease him.â Virgil chided, âThatâs what tomorrows for.â
âIt is tomorrow!â
âSleep first.â Logan sighed, snuggling deeper into the arms of his lovers.
He didnât know how to feel about the possibilities of tomorrow morning. Scared? Excited? Impossibly aroused at the thought? Yes, yes, and yes. But those were thoughts for tomorrow. For now, he would happily rest in satisfaction.Â
The rest of the year likely wouldnât provide the same respite, though.

â Stellar Collision â
A stellar collision is the coming together of two stars caused by stellar dynamics within a star cluster, or by the orbital decay of a binary star due to stellar mass loss or gravitational radiation, or by other mechanisms not yet well understood.
"One moment, she had been about to punch a CEO. The next, she was stuffed like a sausage against her partner inside of one of the many ritzy coatrooms in this banquet hall."
đ°â˘Â°âđ°â˘Â°âđ
It was a cold autumn night, and a full moon shined over painterly stratus clouds after days of rain and 3PM sunsets. Amidst the hustle and bustle of Linkon City elite night life a sleek, all black car with tinted windows and sparkling rims sped down the I-90. The driver held the wheel steady while his precious passenger did her makeup in the sun visor, applying a matte red lip.
'In 500 feet... you will arrive at your destination.'
She puckered her lips in the reflection, making a kissy face at herself; For a brief moment, the driver considered being reborn as her mirror.
"You have no idea what you're doing to my heart right now." He admitted.
"You act like you've been waiting forever."
"I have."
"It's been 84 years..." She joked in a raspy, meek voice tempered by time.
"ăăăăIt's closer to 200 by now."
"Ugh," His lovely partner closer the visor, "I hate when you speak in riddles."
"I prefer poetry."
'You have arrived.' The GPS beeped.

A tall, ash-blond man in a tailored navy suit checked stepped out of his expensive vehicle. He adjusted his star shaped cufflink while stepping around the front to the passenger side, stopping right as the door popped open to assist by opening it the rest of the way and holding out his hand to his lovely guest. Daintily, her shiny, black, ankle-strap kitten heels clicked onto the pavement, and she placed her soft palm in his grasp. Inching out of the ride with her short black dress, her escort couldn't help but notice how even under the moonlight, her thighs gleamed.
Since the valet also seemed to notice, he made sure to quickly take her midnight colored clutch under his arm before helping wrap navy blue satin around her waist in front of the guy.
Placing his lips right next to her temple, he gave her a sweet, gentle kiss on her temple. Raising his hand to smooth the fly-aways down her long, pearl pink hair.
"Um, Mister and Missăź"
"Mr. And Mrs. Seiya Shen." Seiya corrected, politely handing his keys to the valet driver, albeit focused on his task.
He tucked a loc behind her ear and whispered down, "You'll get cold, Honey Bun."
"Aww," His partner smiled at him and him only, "Thank you, Pretty Kitty."
With her arm in his and her clutch tucked, they made their way up the stone staircase littered with couples of various ages. The building looked like a medieval castle with its gray stones and wall curling ivy. Light spilled out of the entrance way, peaking between suits and cocktail dresses, and the closer they got, the closer the couple could smell seafood boiling and meat sizzling aromas wafting into the chilly air.
"Nobody here looks like they know how to cook." Seiya covertly muttered, scanning profiles to easily ID.
"Woah. Have you developed a sixth sense for that kind of thing?" Heaven teased.
"Cooking is one of my best skills."
"Followed only by your impeccable honesty."
"Thank yoăź"
"Mr. Shen!" A young man approached them from the crowd gathered at large, dark double doors.
They shared a glance: time to work.
Tonight, they were wealthy, young upstarts in the field of astronomy. Mr. and Mrs. Seiya and Celeste Shen, who had been cordially invited one of the largest in Linkon's biggest banquet hall for a gathering of some of the brightest astrophysicists in the country for their yearly summit. The glimmering chandeliers, overflowing booze, and finger foods promised an unforgettable night discussing the latest scientific papers and discoveries.
"Good evening, Mr. Hence," Seiya shook hands with a burly black man in his fifties.
His scraggly salt and pepper beard didn't hide his jolly visage. The old man seemed genuinely happy to see Seiya.
"Please, don't age me in front of such a beautiful woman," Mr. Hence said jokingly, shaking Celeste's hand, "Mr. Hence is my father."
"It's nice to see you again, Mr. Hence." She replied, giggling.
A few years back, the Hunter Association sent the duo on an espionage assignment to a mansion party they believed was a front for a drug ring, and in all the commotion they'd made a friend in Mr. Hence, a wealthy philanthropist who donated his family inheritance to education and the arts. He was a funny old man who said just about anything after a few shots of Hennessy.
âAll men are dogs. Have you considered my marriage proposal yet.â
âYouâre a man.â said Seiya, pulling their handshake apart.
âI am an old man, itâs completely different.â
âItâs worse.â Seiya agreed, firmly holding his ladyâs hand, âCan you ever say âhelloâ without courting my wife?â
âI canât help it son, I never see you courting her.â
âIâve read that your eyesight worsens as you age.â
Celeste snickered, and then elbowed her partner for making her laugh.
âIâm surprised you didnât bring a date tonight, Mr. Hence,â she said, âThereâs usually a star on your arm.â
âHave you exhausted the cosmos?â Seiya quipped, getting subtly elbowed again.
âTonight, a few of the scientists that piloted the Rover I will be in attendance. I wanted to see if any of them were as fine as I remembered. You remember I told you I almost got Mae Jemison pregnanăźâ
âThereâs nothing here for us, Darling.â said Seiya, ushering Celeste around the ridiculous old man as if in orbit. Mr. Hence laughed from his belly before rejoining them.
"Oh Iâm sure something will pique The Great Shen Duoâs interest!" Mr. Hence exclaimed, now leading the charge, âThereâs never a dull moment with you two.â
ĂâĂ
However, as the night waned on, Celeste and Seiya came up short on details any juicier than the latest sleazy, salacious gossip. An entire list of a meeting of the minds and half were there to cheat on their wives, half were there to schmooze their bosses boss while the remaining, gullible stragglers were there to actually satiate their pure appetite for astronomy.
The CEO of N.E.P.T.U.N.E had been one of those people on the Associationsâs âReid Techniqueâ radar, which meant implementing an inductive approach where each individual suspect was evaluated with respect to specific observations relating to the crime. Consequently, factual analysis relied not only on crime scene analysis, which had all taken place so far at large socialite gatherings like this but also on information learned about each suspect. Only applying factual analysis would result in establishing an estimate of a particular suspect's probable guilt or innocence based on things like opportunity and access to commit the crime, their behavior before and after the crime, their motivations and propensity to commit the crime, and evaluation of physical and circumstantial evidence.
Simply put, Mr. CEO didnât require as much analyzing as Celeste thought after their initial conversation in the front hall turned into him placing his decrepit hands demurely on the exposure of her back.
Surely he had some couth, anything she could respect about the man, because it was already on nine and countingăźIt dropped to zero at the exact same time his hands dropped to her right cheek.
As Celeste squared her shoulders planted her feet and thought about her lifeâs choices, the CEO was suddenly holding his wrist in agony followed by her suddenly whisked out of his invasive atmosphere into an inky abyss smelling of old money and white diamonds, the heavy, expensive coats muffling the commotion just on the other side of the mahogany door.
âHenry! Whatâd you learn?â She could hear Mr. Henceâs laughter in the background. He had been right, there was never a dull moment with them.
That especially couldnât be disputed now. Because Mr. Shen had pulled Mrs. Shen into a coatroom closet just in time.

"Thanks for the save." Heaven whispered, regaining her bearings by propping her chin against his navy lapel.
"He didn't know anything about Neptune."
Xavier whispered back, leaning down to his partner's ear where their communicators dangled in the star-shaped diamonds from her pretty earlobe. He wanted to nip it in frustration, even knowing it would do little for relief.
âThis might not be the best moment, but," His lips brushed the tip of her sensitive ear, and he noted how cute it was that they twitched, "You smell really good.â
And maybe it wasn't the best moment for romance but being pressed against Xavier like a warm pleat had Heaven blushing regardless.
Besides, in another moment, she had been about to punch a CEO.
Being stuffed like a sausage against her handsome partner inside of one of the many ritzy coatrooms in this banquet hall wasn't the worst outcome.
"Did you find out anything on your end?" Heaven asked somewhat dazzled, amusing Xavier.
She was dangerously cute to him when she wanted to focus on the task at hand. He leaned farther back into the coats hanging up along the wall, and Heaven followed, her body sliding into place on his.
"Nothing too interesting to report, Leader. Some old man keeps bringing up his alleged one night stand with a former NASA astronaut."Â
âYou donât believe him?â
âI believe African-American women have higher standards.â He deadpanned.
Heaven laughed but pretended to cry and sniffle, âYouâre learning. Iâm so proud of you, Partner.â
She poked his face while he continued his debrief and then Xavier finally stopped her with a playful finger bite.
Heavenâs gaze flickered from his strong jawline to his warm, blue eyes. She could feel his heart beat faster in his chest, smell his clean cologne, and even hear his breath hitch when she moved her hands beyond his chest up to his ears.
Slow, circular rubs to the earlobes had Xavier purring like a kitten. The different materials in the room buried his bubbling moans in cotton and fleece.
"Try..." Xavier's breathed hitched, "harder."
Their lips drew to each other like a gravitational pull, pressing against each other tenderly with slow, seductive movements.
Heaven kissed as though she had never done it, tentative and shyly brushing her heart over his lips like dust on the moon.
Xavier eyes popped open, excitement gleamed in them before fluttering closed.
A little smile dotted her mouth as he cupped her face, palming her blushing cheeks and leaning against her. Heaven's hands slid up his arms before settling on his shoulders, alternating between squeezing his muscles or massaging them.
Xavier followed suit, massaging their lips together, puckering his like satin against hers like silk, kissing her lips individually, then her cupids bow, even including the beauty mark on the bottom right corner of her mouth.
Each kiss break allowed space for nothing except air.
He'd craved her lips for so long.
Xavier could feel Heaven melting from the touch because he could feel himself teetering, too.
When she wrapped her arms around his neck to deepen their kiss, Xavier clutched her just as desperately, his body advancing more until Heaven was backed up through the coats on a more solid wall.
She couldn't find it in her to stop, not even for the sake of the mission, and as for Xavier, he had clocked out as soon as he saw her dress.
Heaven held the back of his head and gripped his hair. There was a hot sensation tightening her stomach that burned white hot when Xavier trailed wet, feathery kisses from her chin down her throat. When he started sucking on her pulse point and started grinding her against the wall as if unable to restrain himself any longer, Heaven nearly reached for the hem of her dress.
They had to leave this building.
"You surrounded me on all sides." He warned breathlessly, "Is it too late to surrender?"
"Yeah," Heaven moaned in his ear, "much too late."
Xavier had never telported them back to his apartment faster.

RESOLUTION
Inc: Silver, GN!Reader, Lilia (mentioned), Sebek (mentioned) Warnings: None save for a bit of post-overblot struggles WC: 2.4k Summary: It reminded him of the cottage he lived in with Lilia, and perhaps thatâs why he never tore his gaze away from it once. He wanted that halcyon paradise to be the very thing he saw each time he closed his eyes.
There once was a gallery in the Valley, tucked away in a small village that lay nestled a few miles out from Black Scale Palace. The village itself is of a slow-living sortâpeople move at their own pace, most stores close by sunset, and the most excitement it draws is a yearly festival that he attends religiously for a peaceful break. The gallery reflected this sentiment. It was only one floor with paintings done by artists within the Valley adorning its walls. Lilia sent Sebek and him, when they were both still young, to this place with the instruction of sitting still and staring at a painting for an hour without breaking focus.
It was meant to be a lesson in resilience. Sebek lasted only a few minutes before he became fidgety and annoyed. But Silver remembers it as one of the few rare instances where he didnât feel tired doing a task. He had sat before a painting of a landscape; florentis it was, with a blue, blue sky and the greenest grass heâd ever seen. There was an old brown barn at a slight angle on a hill with a bucket of flowers outside of its door, which had a window shaped like a crescent moon with a warm glow coming from within. A part of him wondered what the rest of the landscape looked like beyond just the snapshot he was granted.Â
It reminded him of the cottage he lived in with Lilia, and perhaps thatâs why he never tore his gaze away from it once. He wanted that halcyon paradise to be the very thing he saw each time he closed his eyes.
The gallery is gone now. It shut down a year after that assignment due to a lack of funding to keep it operational. He wasnât too surprised to hear this is the caseâa lot of things end with shuttered windows and padlocked doors in Briar Valley. Although the nation itself can hold steady in the international sphere, intranationally itâs a decaying cadaver of outdated beliefs and bygone days. He figures Malleus will be the one to fix it. He hopes Malleus will be the one to fix it.Â
Someone needs to.Â
With the death of the gallery, so too came the death of that painting within. A part of him mourned it for the sole reason that he wished to see it once more. That tends to be the case with things once theyâre goneâyou donât grieve for the loss, but rather for the opportunities you missed leading up to the moment.Â
Still, days continued in the end, and he soon grew from the enraptured boy to the individual he is now. The painting became a blur of colours and misinterpretations in his memory until it finally reached the point where he struggled to recall the original piece to begin with. What was the barn like, again? And the flowers? Were there clouds, or was the sky clear?Â
He hardly knew. It hardly mattered. In a realm of over-blots and grief, the angle in which an old barn leaned was the last thing on his mind.Â
___________________________
It was the summer of his third year that it did come back to him. Many things had happened in the past few months that sat heavy in his mindâthe revelation of his bloodline, the consequences of his princeâs despair, and the pending departure of the man who he actually considered his father. It had been overwhelming to the point that he felt like he could hardly breathe. He had support, of courseâthose who had gone through similar circumstances with over-blots were quick to be by his side. The reassurances were effective in nullifying most of his anxiety, but a small part still held residence in his chest, gnawing away at his mind in the night as sleep, for once in his life, evaded him.Â
Heâs standing in the cottage with a cardboard box at his feet and a faint frown on his lips. From the kitchen he can hear something rattling about before a familiar face pokes around the corner.Â
âHow many mugs does he have, seriously?âÂ
You look despondent as you hold up three ceramic mugs in each hand, causing his lips to twitch into a faint smile.Â
âFather is a bit of a collector, you know,â he hums softly as he looks back at the pictures in the box by his feet. It feels cathartic to be able to call him father in front of you; after the events of the over-blot, you knew the reality of their relationship now, and so keeping a ruse of mere friendship was pointless. âWhich is why he assigned you and me to clean up this mess. If he was here with us, heâd be trying to stop us from throwing anything out at all.âÂ
Indeed, with Lilia preoccupied at Black Scale Palace dealing with the last few Senate meetings about the incident, now is the only time you had to clean up the cottage to a degree.Â
âIâm not too sure. He seemed onboard with the clean up idea.â You come shuffling out of the kitchen with your own cardboard box which, by the clanking inside, tells him that youâve stashed away most of the ceramics. âI think heâs looking for a clean slate as well.âÂ
Silver falls silent at that comment as he sets aside a few more old books and documents. It wasnât just him who found some change in the aftermathâLilia and Sebek had experienced flips in perspectives as well. His brow furrows slightly as sunlight streams through the window with flecks of dust dancing in the rays. Each time he sets a document into the box, more of that dust rises to greet the light. âI suppose so.â
He hasnât felt tired since everything that happened despite the issues at night. In fact, he feels painfully alert as he glances towards you. Youâre shuffling the boxes around by the front door with your own focused expression, trying hard not to bump too many of the valuables.Â
âI think we should take out what we have so far. If we keep adding more, weâll end up walling ourselves in, and then weâll need to escape through the window or something.â You point out in humour as you gesture at the many boxes by your feet. He assesses the situation and then nods in agreement before closing the box of documents.Â
But he doesnât move quite yet. He can hear you opening the front door with a huff as you carry one of the boxes out to the cart beyond. His attention goes towards the sunlight, and he watches it embrace the hardwood floors he kneels on. His fingers go out to touch the spot warmed by this. He remembers many moments on this floorâfrom childhood to now. He remembers the voices of people he once knew, the scents that the passing seasons brought, and the anticipation of his fathers return whenever he went on his trips.Â
Silver withdraws his hand and picks up the cardboard box with a sigh. This too, shall pass.Â
_______________________________
Heâs greeted by the sound of cicadas screaming in the nearby trees as he emerges from the cottage. Youâre already gone, having set off for the cart ahead while he was lost in rumination on the floor. A small sigh escapes him as he follows your footsteps in the dirt. Your ability to keep moving ahead is something that he admiresâand heâs come to rely on you to tether him in place, so he doesnât keep sinking into the river of memories pulling him back. Gratitude is hard to express at times, and he wishes he could express it to you more for all that youâve done for the entirety of his family.Â
âDid you get lost?â Your voice is teasing as he emerges from the treeline. Youâre leaning against the cart with your arms crossed, your lips pulled in a small grin as you watch him approach. He smiles slightly once more before setting the box inside.Â
âSomewhat,â he replies, half in humour and half not. He pushes back the strands of his silver hair as he turns to look down the road beyond. Itâs a dirt path leading towards the nearest villageâand the second-hand store that these items are inevitably going to. The horse thatâs meant to attach to the cart grazes mindlessly on the nearby plain. This, combined with the warm air and the faint scent of flowers, creates a peaceful moment in the swirling chaos of the past few months.Â
âSomewhat?â You muse as you brush past him, nudging his side with your elbow before tossing a wry smile his way. âTry not to wander offâwe need you to be able to get the horse moving.âÂ
Silver huffs a small laugh as he watches you walk back towards the cottage. His hands come to rest on his hips as he turns back to survey the valley beyond. The rolling green hills are familiar to him, as is the tree line, and he can feel himself relaxing furtherâ
Before his gaze catches on a structure in the distance.Â
For a moment he doesnât focus on it too much, until it catches his gaze again, and he begins to pay attention to it a bit more. Itâs a large structure that looks to be dark brown in colour and leaning on an angle. His eyes narrow, then widen in surprise, and before he knows it, heâs already setting off in the direction of the abnormality.Â
Perhaps he should have waited for your return. Most certainly, he should have not left all those valuables unattended in the cart, even though only Lilia and him live out this far. But the lure of what he sees up ahead is far too great to ignore. Itâs a barn.Â
Itâs the barn.Â
He can tell as he gets closer to it. The bucket outside of the front door, which has a window shaped like a crescent moon on it. The flowers in the bucket are gone and there is no light coming from within anymore. The grass around the front porch is overgrown and there are vines now climbing up the sides. The structure itself is far more decayed as well; it leans heavily to the left, and he can see gaps between the planks of wood that comprise its body. Itâs an old, worn being, which has withstood the test of time for far too long. But it still is the very structure that he saw.
He draws to a stop a few feet away as he stares at it in disbelief. Despite the changes, florentis it still is, with a blue, blue sky and the greenest grass heâs ever seen.
âOhâŚâ he whispers to himself. Suddenly heâs a child again, sitting on a wooden bench with his friend fidgeting to his side. His fatherâs words of resilience echo in his mind and a part of him feels compelled to just stand here and stare for an hour or so, drinking in that halcyon paradise until itâs all that heâll see when he closes his eyes.Â
He once wondered what the rest of the landscape looked like beyond just the snapshot he was granted, and as he turns, he finds that lingering question finally has a response.Â
He can see the treeline and the edge of his familyâs cottage just beyond. He can see the cart, and the horse, and youâtrekking through the green, green grass towards him. You wave one hand, and he waves back, still partially in a daze as he does so.Â
âPlease donât go wandering off like that!â You call out as you approach. âI still remember you telling me about how there are bears in these woodsâyou really had me thinking you finally lost a battle with one.âÂ
âSorry,â he murmurs as he looks back to the barn once more. The sun makes it cast a long shadow down the hillside, exactly like the painting still. Itâs so surreal that his mind is still running to grasp it.Â
âAre you okay?â Your voice changes from teasing to slightly worried as you stop before him. Itâs a tone heâs become accustomed to hearing from youâworried, caring. Your eyes betray that very concern as you give him a once over. He feels that familiar need to reassure you as he nods.Â
âI am, I am.â He soothes you as his hand comes to touch your arm briefly before dropping back to his side. He doesnât wish to overstep. âI just⌠wished to come see this building for a moment.â
He doesnât elaborate, and he can see the calculating thoughts this withholding generates in your mind. âIf you tell me yours, Iâll tell you mine.âÂ
Thoughts, he realizes. Youâre talking about what heâs thinking right now. Another smile plays on his lips as he shakes his head.Â
âI just figured something out, thatâs all.âÂ
This comment is a gentle shut down towards you, and he appreciates it when you look at him for a moment longer before nodding your head. âAlright. Well, if youâre done figuring out the world's secrets, can you come help with the horse?â Another smile appears on your lips, and he feels a sense of warmth as he sees it. âIâm not ready to accept a hoof to my face just yet.âÂ
âI should really teach you how to handle horses.â He sighs softly as he gestures for you to go ahead. He hears you laugh as you turn and set off back towards the beast you seem to be struggling to tame. When he goes to follow, he pauses for a moment to look back at that barn.
A thought occurs to him then. Lilia isnât much of a painterâSilver knows this from his childhood when he would recruit his father to colour with him, and Lilia had a habit of constantly finding himself drawing outside of the lines. So, he knows for a fact that Lilia wasnât the one to paint the scene.Â
Then who painted the picture? Itâs just him and his father who live out this far. He doesnât recall ever seeing an artist's name on the painting when he was young, but perhaps the memory was too far gone to recall.Â
A faint frown plays on his lips before he turns away and begins walking once more. He supposes that, with one question resolved, there are still many more left unsolved.Â

A oneshot Best Jeanist x f! OC fic.
Just say no? I don't understand what the problem here is?
Nia glared at the phone screen before typing her response. Her friend wasn't wrong, but was missing the nuances of her current predicament.
Because I don't want to hurt his feelings?
Bubbles popped up almost instantly from Aya, indicating that the woman was typing a response.
Well do you want to fluff your "no" to be nicer, or do you want to wear jeans all day in a hot, stuffy room?
Nia threw her phone on the bed, the device landing facedown on her duvet. The sun wasn't up yet, and the city below remained muted. The city was never really quiet, but it could whisper. Her bedside lamp light cast her shadow against the wall as she pinched the bridge of her nose, trying to prepare herself for what she expected was coming.
The day was guaranteed to be a long one which would require her attention late into the evening. She was a journalist covering the Hero Billboard Chart event. Luckily journalism was a written media which permitted her comforts that TV reporters did not have. Such as wearing comfortable, cozy clothing to the event. Jeans did not sound comfortable today.
The forecast said it would be a hot day, and the event would be packed like it was every year. Jeans felt too stuffy for the day ahead. Her boyfriend would also be in attendance but, at her insistence, would not be seated near her. She had to focus on work - his presence had a history of making that difficult. Reporters were always looking for his comment on the yearly rankings. Being the former #3 hero had a way of getting noticed, moreso at hero events.
"My darling denim?" Her boyfriend appeared in the doorframe, sporting a familiar outfit of denim. "Breaking out the coat, I see." Nia smirked at the blonde who leaned casually in the doorframe. "It seems I'll be wearing sufficient denim for us both." He remarked, looking at the tights that clung to her body.
"Well, it's going to be a long day. Thought I'd wear something stretchy." Tsunagu furrowed their brow at the comment, pushing off from the doorframe to stand tall. "Denim may start stiff but quickly gets soft and pliable. Like those tights, but better." Nia continued grabbing the items she'd need to record her observations and thoughts. Voice recorded, pens, journal, tablet. Sometimes taking physical notes just made sense, other times it proved impossible. She was going to be prepared however the day turned out and write a great article about it.
"Darling," Tsunagu's voice brought Nia back to their conversation. "I can help soften the fabric for you, if you-"
"Why are you doing this?" Nia turned, annoyance prominent in her voice. "Why do you always do this when I'm covering a major story?" Tsunagu looked taken aback at her question. "Do what?" He wasn't sure what she was referring to. The offer to soften her clothing was one he gave freely - or to mend or alter any garment she desired. His quirk had made him a great hero but he took a special joy from the glee on his girlfriends face when he made something fit her just right.
"I'm always happy to change your clothing for you. Your body is the most beautiful thing to display any textile on." Nia turned her attention back to her bag, tossing another pen into it's hazardous pocket. "No, the wearing jeans thing." She opened the drawer to her beside table and tossed a pocket container of kleenex and a flashlight in, just in case. Better to be prepared.
"What wearing jeans thing?"
"You always want me to wear jeans when I'm working a big story. I like denim. I just don't love it the way you do." Tsunagu reflected on the past few stories she'd been tasked with covering. "Before I left for the opening of the new mall, you asked if I wanted to trial a pair of jeans you'd just made. The time before that you insisted I needed a jean jacket."
"It was a fall day, and denim is part of the motif."
"Why?" Nia asked, finally satisfied with her preparation for the day. She managed to get the purses' zipper closed, although she was no longer as confident in the inseam integrity. She watched as her boyfriend looked at the bulging accessory before raising a hand to it. "Why does it matter so much to you? You never care what I wear except when I'm working."
"I want to make sure I can help you quickly, if needed. I want to believe the places you're working are safe, but-" Tsunagu quickly reinforced the seam of her purse, the fabric suddenly clinging tightly shut.
"But sometimes things don't go as planned." She finished the statement for him in a sigh. Nia had never been hurt in her time as a journalist. She had, unfortunately, been in the vicinity of some villain events. With the state of the world and her job involving observing and reporting on larger events it seemed unavoidable. Villains would always try and capitalize on the media coverage that these events would naturally garnered. "I guess it was good I didn't end up covering that concert." Nia conceded, remembering how the venue had been bombed. It was an assignment initially given to her, but had been reassigned at the last minute.
Thinking about Tsunagu's frantic voicemail still made her feel terrible. She hadn't informed him of the last minute reassignment and the man had been understandably panicked when he heard the news of the explosion, unaware that she was in a different area of the city entirely.
"Denim is the fabric I'm best at working with. If something were to happen, I could help you more efficiently."
"Nothing is going to happen, Tsunagu. Who would attack a building full of heroes? There are going to be both active and retired heroes in attendance. They'd have to be crazy." Nia grabbed his hand, smiling at the blonde, jean clad man who towered over her. "You don't need to worry about helping me."
"The need to ensure your safety is sewn into my core." Tsunagu brushed a strand of stray white hair from Nia's face before pulling her into a hug. "And since I can't ensure it there, I will ensure I can assist you if something were to fray."
Nia smiled at the mans words. She hadn't expected that answer, but was warmed at the amount of care it showed. "How about this- Could you cover my bracelet in denim?" Tsunagu gently released Nia from his embrace to get a closer look at the broad band that adored her wrist. The golden color was quickly enrobed in dark blue, the fabric soft against her wrist.
"Where did you even get the fabric from?" She questioned, looking over his outfit for any missing pieces. The high collar of his coat covered his mouth, but the twinkle in his eye let her know Tsunagu was smiling. He opened his coat enough to display a missing piece of denim from over his heart.
"While I appreciate your comprimise, you're neglecting to consider one key feature, my darling denim."
"Oh? Nia questioned as she ran her finger over the soft fabric that was freshly stitched to her accessory, entranced by the feeling. Tsunagu had been right - the fabric definitely got softer over time.
"Pockets."
The idea popped into my head and would not give me peace until I wrote it down. If you enjoyed it, take a gander at my other works.

Hi Honey,
[Long post incoming, skip to P.S, if you don't have time to read through]
I am trying to get myself more organised. I am used to living in messy bedrooms and cluttered closets (to be honest, I feel more productive that way, is it problematic, I don't know) but anyways I went through your Notion template and it resonated with me, only problem I am more of a book or binder girl and I did buy a new ruled notebook for this new year, one month went by and I didn't use it at all, Can you guide me through making a planner I have searched online and they have things like monthly, yearly and weekly planners and people plan their meals and all, I want it to be effective and your Notion templates makes sense to me and I have a feeling you would understand my way of working and I would love your help.
P.S: In short can you make a guide on making an effective planner.
Not trying to butter you or anything, just wanted to say genuinely grateful your blog exists, It has helped me a lot.
hi here-for-the-extravaganza đŤśđ˝ so i hope this helps you out
MAKING AN EFFECTIVE PLANNER
buying the right planner ; for physical planners i prefer to buy planners that include lots of space for additional writing instead of just the date. yk those ones? make sure to get a binder/planner that u think is cute and has space for a to-do list, monthly overview kinda calendar etc.
if ur working from scratch with a binder you can buy a cute binder or decorate it with stickers and things of the sort. for the paper i recommend graph paper bcuz its neater in my opinion but whatever floats ur boat.
on that paper make space for the following ;
monthly calendar (with a little column for monthly goals)
weekly agenda (you can create a new agenda every week if u have the time/energy to do so) but if u dont then you can try...
writing the days of the week and beneath them were gonna try and replicate the concept of a toggle list. its basically like writing "monday" and there are little sub-tasks written below, like what u have to do on that day.
so how i'd do it, is i'd write the day of the week as a header/title. then beneath it i'd use little sticky notes (bonus points if u color coordinate) and then i'd write my tasks on the sticky notes. that way, when a new week comes i dont have to create a whole new agenda, i can simply remove the sticky notes but still keep the structured agenda if that makes sense.
reflection space (to reflect on the productivity of ur month/week/day and what u can improve on and what u can keep doing)
my thing is, if u wanna do a physical planner, whether its an already made planner or a binder, just make sure that u have SPACE for things like that.
i hope you found this helpful đ

Hi, Rose! I like how chill you're about filling your notebooks and that you're using plain ones quite a bit. Your style is very similar to mine, although you're definitely keeping journals for longer than me, so I'm thinking you might help me with my sudden nitpicker issue.
I used to keep a yearly journal (moleskine weekly with habit and media tracking + tasks) and a sketchbook. Weekly was quite valuable to me because my memory is swiss cheese most of the time and keeping some kind of archive takes the edge off it. Still, separating art and planning always felt off because I'm working as an illustrator and my thought process includes both. I also basically gave up writing as I didn't want to have more than 2 books on me when I'm out. So now I have everything put in one place and there's an infinite amount of pages for the day. The problem is I miss the structure and the option of skimming through the whole year at once (of course notebooks will be finished in just a few months if I pour all of it in there).
If you have any ideas on how you'd tackle this problem it'll be very helpful! Also, if it includes having more notebooks I'm willing to try it, I just don't even know where to start, and how to make them correspond, so I don't feel like I'm slicing my brain in half â¤ď¸
Hi! Iâm so so so sorry for the late reply! Honestly the older I get the more I find it difficult to have multiple notebooks and use them all for different things too. I do have a small sketchbook that I use for sketching and sometimes write little text on them as well. But my writing is completely in my moleskine notebooks. Sometimes when I feel for only writing with no scrapbook elements then I use a different notebook. The reason why is because I have been gifted so many notebooks throughout the years that I donât want them to keep collecting dust. As for my appointments and tracking I use mostly my phone (notes app on iPhone and the notion app). I did buy a Filofax to carry for appointments but my phone is more handy than that. As for a system, I donât have one. Sometimes when I write about certain things (such as my trans experience) I like to put a little tab/bookmark on the pages. That way I know there is something that I need to look back at or is important on a different level. I do have a commonplace journal and I use tabs/bookmarks to divide different subjects from each other. To me having a system is a bit out of touch because I donât want to drive myself crazy in order to create the perfect system. My mind has always been a mess and it reflects perfectly in my journals.

Iâm not sure how much of help I am with this. But maybe it will help you to think about it differently? Because sometimes I just pick an old journal and turn the pages and find new things and itâs random and magical. I feel like a system would ruin that experience for me. It might sound like a waste of time but I think itâs important to take your time with things like these.
If you have more questions feel free to message me! đš

self care for darker days
disclaimer: i am NOT a mental health professional. if you are struggling with your mental health, please reach out to trusted people or professionals who can support you đ¤
đ prioritise. when things get overwhelming, itâs easy to lose focus and feel youâre standing in front of an insurmountable barrier. something iâve been learning to do, which has been really helpful, is prioritise my tasks and to-dos. there are lots of methods for this that you can look into if youâre interested :-)
đ seek balance. when it's cold and dark, seek warmth and light. opening the curtains when the sun's out, layering up and stocking up on hot chocolate and herbal teas are nice little things to do! get scented candles if you're into those, or pull out your favourite cosy TV shows or books. this applies to more than just the material too; i try to evaluate my stress levels and where the stress is coming from, and balance out my life where i can (not always that simple, i know...).
đ watch out for seasonal depression. i live in the UK where it gets pretty dark and dismal in the colder seasons. sometimes depression comes around in times like these, and we need a bit more support and care than we can give ourselves. please donât be afraid to reach out for help, there are lots of resources available for exactly this. there is no shame in needing care, we as a species are supposed to care and be cared for
đ finish up projects. october-november bring with them the end of the yearly cycle for most of the earth, and are a time of rest and reflection. of course, modern life doesnât work like that for most of us, but doing little things to stay in harmony with the cyclical nature of life can be very soothing. finishing up the projects we can, preparing our homes for the cold and dark with decor and a good clear out, and making even a little time in our schedule for restorative rest and contemplation are all important things we can do to signify the end of the cycle
đ romanticise the little things. spending an evening curled up in bed with a film and a warm drink, autumn and winter scents and flavours, the crisp air and pale golden afternoon light, the crunchy leaves... as much as the colder months can be difficult, there is a lot to like, and when times are hard, even feeling a tiny bit better makes a big difference. i suppose it's a similar concept to keeping a gratitude journal in that it helps ground you and let you stay mindful of your external life, but i find that appreciating the little seasonal things feels so much nicer than scraping for things to be grateful for every day, and more helpful for me.
đ remember that the sun will rise again. sometimes the cold and dark, the pressure of the holidays, and the sense of disconnection with the world that winter can bring, feel oppressive and unending. without hammering on about cycles too much again, winter will come to a close and bring with it the spring. our bones will thaw out in the pale sun, the birds will start to nest and sing, and the first buds of leaves and flowers will unfurl. nothing lasts forever in nature, and things will always feel better. sometimes i like to write a little list of what i look forward to about the spring time, to ground myself and feel more hopeful about it

Growing into the Job, Post 380: An Email to a Friend
Alright, I think Iâm ready, I thought to myself, straightening my tie as best I could in the meager reflection of my office window. I hadnât tied one of these things in a while, nor had I worn a suit, and I was honestly glad I could manage it. I had learned not to take anything for granted these days, finding myself unable to do even the most simple things. And not just things, like, reaching up to high shelves or tasks that required physical strength. Just yesterday, I had to look at my sneakers for almost a minute before I remembered how to tie them. Stress is a bitch, right?Â
Anyway, back to the suit. The three-piece that the girls had gotten for me was a cheap, silly-little number probably made for a kid headed to his Bar Mitzvah, but theyâd had it custom tailored for me. Surprisingly, it fit my shrunk-ass self pretty well. A deep blue, with a nice light-blue shirt and dark blue tie. Something thatâd look good on camera, I was told.
I took a deep breath and tried to chuckle to myself.
It was almost 11:30, almost time for this photoshoot the girls had arranged, something that Channel 5 wanted to do before the news piece about the office expansion. It was going to be airing this weekend and they wanted some B-roll for what theyâd be airing, some still photos, maybe some quick shots for atmosphere.
All these changes that were happening were difficult to wrap my head around. My feelings on it were different day-to-day, sometimes moment-to-moment. Every time I tried to sit down and think about what was really happening something would come along and distract me, often a member of the opposite sex which were - to say the least -Â plentiful these days. On the rare occasion that I could think straight I ended up stressing myself out,Â
It felt like my business, my practice, and my livelihood had been taken out of my hands and sent on this out-of-control bullet train. Too much was happening too fast. I was worried that it was too risky, too much, and that it was all going to be a financial disaster.Â
I had to admit, though, that it was a little exciting, and that I felt kind of proud to be a part of it sometimes. This place was primed to be a major hub of health care (mostly for women) in the area, and if I let myself enjoy the ride and take comfort in trusting that the people (letâs face it, again: women) around me, it could feel pretty awesome.
The women had it all under control, and the scenery was nothing to sneeze at, either. Jesus, I was surrounded more and more each day by some of the prettiest girls on the planet, and dating the queen bee herself. Melissa was getting to be like a fucking goddess, wasnât she?
Thinking of her, there were times that I could ignore the haha existential dread of an impending gynarchy that would otherwise consume my every thought. Right now was one of those times, and as I looked at my reflection and straightened my tie once again, I steadied myself. I had been thrown off a bit earlier, after Iâd awoken on my office cot and realized Iâd been asleep since last nightâs dinner with Melissa in the breakroom. Had I been here all night? For some reason I felt I hadnât. Like, why was I in different clothes?Â
I had a rare moment where I was alone. Where I could think without being distracted. In the small window of time I had to myself before Angie came in with my suit I decided to look at some emails. Aside from the professional communications, ads and routine garbage I dealt with daily, thereâd been two things that caught my eye. One, another from that crackpot âANDRSONâ, saying something about knowing how I was being held against my will, that he was going to try to help. That one I threw right away; it made me feel sort of strangely uncomfortable, just reading it. And I figured the guy was full of shit. The second was a message from a guy I knew - a friend, Rich, a fellow geriatrician that I would see yearly at the AAG conference. He had apparently been trying to reach out to me over the weekend. Not having my phone, or the ability to text, was a bummer.
At the conference heâd ribbed me about Melissa. Even two months ago before all these extra inches sheâd cut quite the eye-popping figure among all the other attendees, and he had a good idea why Iâd hired her. Iâd also told him how Iâd been feeling back then, early in this whole thing. I figured, as a friend, he deserved to know whatâs been going on with me but as I began typing out this email, a reply to him, I slowly started feelingâŚless good. The first paragraph went fine, the second brought on a weird fluttering in my gut, an indecision. By the time I started trying to explain my condition - which to a fellow physician I could have done better - my hands had started to shake. I began to feel nauseous and, well, had to stop. It took all my will, in fact, to hover my cursor over the âsendâ button Boy, maybe I need to lay down again, I thought to myself, Iâm really stressed.Â
And then in came Angie. God did she make me nervous.
So, yeah, she brought me my suit, insisted on her morning kiss, and got a glance at this email before Iâd sent it. That had made me even more nervous, and despite her protests I asked her to leave so I could get into my clothes. God help me the woman offered to help me change; I declined as politely as I could.
As soon as sheâd left, I went back to the email...

My eyes had begun to water as I tried reading it over, and I felt a pang of a headache when Iâd actually clicked âsendâ. Jesus, maybe I need glasses finally? Something to use at the computer? It was really throwing me off. So hard to focus.
My headache, my sweaty palms and my general feeling of unease began to fade as I stood up from my desk, once the email was out into the ether. I still had a nagging feeling from some inside voice that I shouldnât have sent that email. It was like Iâd just done something wrong, that IâdâŚagain, god help me, misbehaved. Iâd been shivering, feeling a bit cold ever since Iâd gotten out of bed and worse since working at the computer, but as I set myself to getting dressed I was slowly able to ignore it.
Ok - tie: check. Jacket: check. Pants, belt, new shoes they got for me, a size freakinâ 6: check.Â
11:28 AM, right on time. Alright, I think Iâm ready. Letâs do it!

thank you again to RiF, my editor-at-large

Choosing the Right Roofing Material: Asphalt vs Metal vs Tile
The roof is one of the most essential elements when protecting a home. It is a barrier against the elements, contributes to energy efficiency, and plays a significant role in curb appeal. For homeowners in Newton, MA, selecting the right roofing material is even more critical due to the region's diverse climate, which ranges from snowy winters to humid summers and occasional coastal storms.
Understanding the differences between asphalt shingles, metal roofing, and tile roofing can help homeowners make smart investments that meet both aesthetic and functional goals. Local roofing contractors often guide clients through this process, ensuring the selected material fits the homeâs design, budget, and long-term performance expectations.
A Closer Look at the Top Roofing Option
Understanding each roofing material's strengths and weaknesses is essential. It helps homeowners make informed decisions. Choices should be based on performance, style, and long-term value.
Asphalt Shingles:Â
Asphalt shingles are by far the most common roofing material in the U.S., and for good reason. They're widely available, cost-effective, and easy to install. These shingles are made from a fiberglass base topped with asphalt and granules that protect from UV rays and weather.
Pros:
Affordability: Asphalt shingles are the most economical option, ideal for homeowners on a tighter budget who want value.
Ease of Installation: Most roofing contractors in Newton, MA, can complete an asphalt shingle project in a day or two.
Style Options: Available in a wide range of colors and textures, asphalt can mimic the look of wood or slate.
Repair-Friendly: Small roof repair tasks are often straightforward and inexpensive.
Cons:
Shorter Lifespan: Typically lasts 15â25 years, shorter than metal or tile.
Weather Impact: Severe temperature swings and high humidity, common in Newton, can accelerate granule loss and lead to early degradation.
Metal Roofing: Durable and Energy-Efficient
Modern metal roofs are sleek, stylish, and built to last. Common types include steel, aluminum, and copper, with finishes that resist corrosion and fading. Though more expensive upfront, metal roofs are seen as a long-term investment.
Pros:
Exceptional Longevity: A metal roof can last 40â70 years with proper installation.
Storm Resistance: Excellent protection against high winds, hail, and heavy snow loads common in Newton.
Energy Efficiency: Reflects sunlight, reducing cooling costs in warmer months.
Low Maintenance: Metal rarely requires extensive Roof Repair compared to asphalt.
Cons:
Higher Initial Cost: Installation can cost two to three times more than asphalt.
Noise Without Insulation: Rain or hail may be louder if proper insulation isn't added.
Tile Roofing: The Premium, Long-Lasting Option
Whether made of clay, concrete, or composite materials, tile roofs bring an old-world charm and unmatched durability. They are especially favored for architectural styles with Mediterranean, Spanish, or Southwestern influences.
Pros:
Incredible Durability: Can last over 75 years with little maintenance.
Fire and Weather Resistance: Naturally resistant to fire, rot, and insect damage.
Energy Benefits: Tiles regulate indoor temperatures, reducing energy usage yearly.
Cons:
Weight: Tile is significantly heavier than asphalt or metal. Homes in Newton may require structural upgrades to support the load.
Cost: Both material and installation costs are high, and skilled tile Roofing Contractors can be harder to find.
Fragility: Though strong overall, individual tiles can crack under foot traffic and require careful Roof Repair.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Roofing in Newton, MA
Several essential factors influence roofing choices in Newton, MA. Homeowners should evaluate climate, budget, aesthetics, material lifespan, and local building regulations.
Weather Conditions
Newton, MA, experiences snowstorms, spring rains, and summer heat. A roofing material must handle moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, and high wind loads. Metal roofs perform exceptionally well in this climate, though high-quality asphalt with proper ventilation can also hold up well.
Aesthetic Fit for Neighborhoods
The cityâs architectural diversity, from Colonial homes in historic districts to modern builds, calls for material choices that blend function with style. Asphalt shingles are versatile, while tile adds character to select home designs. Metal roofing, particularly in matte finishes, is gaining popularity for its clean lines and contemporary appeal.
Longevity vs Budget
Asphalt may be affordable now, but it will require more frequent roof repair or replacement in 15â20 years. In contrast, metal and tile have higher up-front costs but deliver decades of performance with minimal maintenance. Homeowners planning to stay in their homes long-term may see better value in premium materials.
Structural Load and Building Codes
Before opting for tile, a homeowner in Newton should consult an engineer or licensed contractor to verify if their existing structure can support the added weight. Compliance with local building codes is crucial, and reputable roofing contractors know the townâs permitting and inspection processes.
The Role of Roofing Contractors in Material Selection
Choosing the right roofing material is not just a matter of aesthetics or price. Roofing contractors serve as advisors, combining technical knowledge with local experience to help homeowners choose a lasting solution.
Contractors in Newton, MA:
Offer material samples and explain pros/cons based on real-life case studies.
Conduct roof inspections to determine structural readiness.
Provide accurate estimates for installation time, warranty, and maintenance costs.
Handle permitting and local compliance, ensuring smooth project execution.
Stand behind their work with solid warranties and timely Roof Repair services when needed.
Conclusion
There is no one-size-fits-all roofing solution. Asphalt, metal, and tile each have unique benefits and limitations. For homeowners in Newton, MA, the right choice depends on climate resilience, budget, aesthetic preference, and long-term maintenance expectations.
By partnering with trusted roofing contractors, property owners can navigate the complexities of material selection and enjoy peace of mind, knowing their roof is built to withstand New Englandâs demanding conditions with minimal future roof repairs.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. How do I know which roofing material is best for my home in Newton, MA?
It depends on your homeâs style, budget, local weather exposure, and long-term maintenance goals. A licensed roofing contractor can help assess what works best structurally and visually.
2. Are metal roofs noisy when it rains?
Not if installed correctly. Proper underlayment and insulation reduce noise significantly, making modern metal roofs no louder than asphalt shingles.
3. Can asphalt shingles withstand New England winters?
Yes, exceptionally high-quality architectural shingles. However, poor attic ventilation or improper installation can shorten their lifespan.
4. Do tile roofs need a special roof frame?
Yes. The weight of clay or concrete tiles requires a stronger roof deck. An engineer or contractor must inspect the deck before installation.
5. Is roof repair easier on asphalt, metal, or tile?
Asphalt is the easiest and least expensive to repair. Metal repairs are less frequent but may require specialized expertise. Tile repair involves replacing individual tiles and can be more complex.
6. How often should a roof be inspected in Newton, MA?
Twice a yearâonce in spring and once in fallâto catch early signs of wear and avoid costly repairs, especially after storms or snow events.

What Maintenance Does a Metal Roof Require?
Metal roofs stand out for their longevity and durability in roofing. However, they are only partially maintenance-free. Regular upkeep is essential to ensure that your investment continues to protect your home effectively.Â
Benefits of Metal Roofing
Before diving into specific maintenance tasks, it's worth noting why people choose metal roofing in the first place. Metal roofs offer several advantages:
Longevity: Metal roofs can last 50 years or more with proper care.
Durability: They resist extreme weather conditions, making them a reliable choice for various climates.
Aesthetic Appeal: Available in multiple styles and colors, metal roofs can enhance your home's appearance.
Energy Efficiency: Metal roofs reflect solar radiant heat, which can help reduce cooling costs in warm months.
Understanding these benefits highlights the importance of maintaining your metal roof to extend its life.
Common Damage to Metal Roofs
While metal roofs are built to last, they can still suffer from certain damage. Some common issues include:
Corrosion: If the protective coating of your metal roof gets scratched or damaged, it can lead to rust.
Cracks and Gaps: Seams and joints may expand or contract over time due to temperature changes, leading to potential leaks.
Debris Accumulation: Leaves, twigs, and other debris can trap moisture and lead to algae growth or other issues.
Being aware of these potential problems is the first step to effective maintenance.
Metal Roof Maintenance Tasks
1. Regular Inspections
Schedule routine inspections of your metal roof at least twice yearly, preferably in spring and fall. Look for signs of wear, including rust spots, loose seams, and debris accumulation. It's advisable to enlist the help of a professional roofing contractor.
2. Cleaning
Keeping your roof clean is essential for its longevity. Hereâs how to do it:
Remove Debris: Clear leaves, branches, and other debris to prevent moisture buildup.
Wash the Surface: Use a gentle cleaning solution and a soft-bristled brush to remove dirt and algae. Avoid using abrasive cleaners that can damage the metal surface.
Check Gutters: Ensure your gutters are clear of debris to maintain proper drainage and prevent water from pooling on your roof.
3. Trimming Overhanging Branches
To prevent potential damage, trim any overhanging branches. This action reduces the risk of branches falling on your roof during storms and minimizes debris accumulation from leaves or twigs.
4. Sealing and Caulking
Inspect the seams and joints of your metal roof for gaps or cracks. If you notice any issues, use a high-quality sealant to prevent water intrusion. Regularly check and reapply caulk as necessary to maintain the integrity of these areas.
5. Addressing Rust and Corrosion
Even the most resilient metal roofs can develop rust over time. If you spot rust:
Clean the Area: Remove any loose rust with a wire brush.
Apply a Rust Inhibitor: Use a rust-inhibiting primer to protect the affected area.
Repaint: After applying the primer, repaint the area with suitable metal roof paint to restore its protective layer.

Roof Inspection Near Me: Your Homeâs Silent Ally
The Roofâs Hidden Tale
Above every home looms a guardian we rarely pause to praiseâthe roof, a steadfast barrier against natureâs whims. It braves howling winds, pounding rain, and the slow grind of years, yet its struggles often stay out of sight until a leak or a loose tile betrays its plight. This is where a roof inspection near me steps in, lifting the veil on a story too vital to ignore. More than a chore, itâs a ritual of reverence, a way to listen to the structure that shelters your life and ensure it endures.
The growing clamor for these inspections reflects a shift in how we see our homesânot as static shells, but as living entities needing care. A small crack today could herald a collapse tomorrow, and the stakes are too high to gamble with neglect. Turning to a local expert weaves this care into your daily world, offering a chance to catch whispers of trouble before they roar. Itâs a quiet act of stewardship, preserving the crown that keeps your sanctuary whole.
Unraveling the Inspection Process
A roof inspection unfolds like a careful exploration, blending keen eyes with seasoned hands to reveal what lies above. An inspector might scale the heights or wield a drone, tracing the roofâs contours for signs of wearâshingles curling at the edges, flashing dulled by rust, or gutters choked with debris. Theyâll probe for weaknesses, from weathered seals around vents to moss staking a claim on damp slopes. Inside, the attic might confess its own secrets: stains blooming on beams or air seeping where it shouldnât.
Opting for a roof inspection near me sharpens this scrutiny with local wisdom. Someone rooted in your area knows the foes your roof facesâbe it relentless sun or sudden squallsâand tailors their search accordingly. The task might span an hour or stretch longer for sprawling roofs, but the result is a clear portrait of its health, often paired with guidance on next steps. Itâs a conversation between you and your home, spoken through the language of slate, tile, or shingle.
Seizing the Perfect Moment
Timing a roof inspection is less about waiting for disaster and more about mastering the art of foresight. After a season of ice or a barrage of storms, your roof might bear scars too subtle for untrained eyes. Booking a check before a sale can polish your homeâs appeal, assuring buyers of its strength. For those stepping into a new nest, itâs a way to greet the space with clarity, dodging the ghosts of past neglect.
The local edgeâchoosing a roof inspection near meâlends urgency and insight. An expert nearby grasps your regionâs rhythms, from humid summers that breed rot to winds that pry at seams. Acting in rhythm with these forces can turn a looming repair into a simple tweak, sparing you the weight of bigger burdens. Itâs about syncing with your homeâs pulse, making vigilance a shield rather than a scramble.
Gifts of Insight and Assurance
The rewards of a roof inspection ripple through your home, touching far more than the tiles above. It can unveil energy thievesâcracks bleeding heat or coldâeasing the strain on your finances. It might flag dangers too, like loose pieces poised to fall or gaps inviting unwanted guests, keeping your haven secure. For many, itâs a sigh of relief, a tether to the certainty that their refuge stands firm against the chaos outside.
Thereâs a practical boon as well. Insurance often smiles on proactive checks, smoothing claims when storms strike. A roof inspection near me brings this clarity close, blending convenience with a gaze shaped by your surroundings. Itâs not just upkeepâitâs a pact, fortifying your homeâs worth and your trust in its embrace. The roof may not shout for attention, but answering its silent call reaps a harvest of calm and control.
Weaving Care Into Everyday Life
Embracing roof inspections as a steady thread in your homeâs story shifts the narrative from patchwork to purpose. A yearly visit, or one after natureâs tantrums, traps trouble in its infancy, keeping minor woes from swelling into woesome costs. Itâs a promise to the future, ensuring the roof that cradles your today can weather your tomorrow. This isnât about dreading decayâitâs about building resilience, a quiet nod to the shelter you cherish.
The local linkâseeking a roof inspection near meâgrounds this pledge in relevance. An inspector who knows your corner of the world sees through its lens, from coastal mists to inland frosts, crafting care that fits. Itâs a bond, tying you to hands that understand your homeâs battles. In a whirlwind of change, this habit offers a foothold, a way to tend the guardian above with the same devotion you give the life beneath. Itâs the roofâs tale, told and retold, keeping your sanctuary strong.
