#TBT to this past September 14 kicking off @culturestrike ‘s first #ArtistPowerSummit with 21 artists and cultural workers from LA, Milwaukee, Chicago, and Ohio. We’ve been working on an artist curriculum, frameworks, and concepts about cultural strategy/power, how to work with movement organizations, and our roles as artist for the past couple of years. This Sept. we tested it with a full day session. And to me, it was beautiful to see a room full of artists, and cultural organizers engaging with it. And close out with a panel featuring @poppyrepublic @tazzystar @tia.oso and Lylliam Posadas - all leading powerful cultural work in reprojustice, representation in entertainment, #qtpoc issues, equity, repatriation, and many other intersections... Often time we only see the final product. But here in these photos you see the intentional carving of time to test, prototype, bring a range of participants , and get thorough feedback from artists of color. It’s important to show the journey of what is taking to arrive to a set of final curriculum/trainings/frameworks that is due for 2020- it takes labor, it takes resources, and takes care. I want to remind us that we are not the first to be doing this- we are part of a lineage and ecosystem of creative communities of color who have been creating these tools and many other frameworks. If we want lasting and meaningful social change, we need a thriving cultural sector with authentic powerful and complex storytelling, and this requires artist of color leadership, continue investment in artists, and an arsenal of tools and resources. And I am excited that through #ArtistPowerSummit we can add to this cultural sector and continue creating space for artists to gather, connect, and engage with resources we have to offer - specifically for #undocumented #poc #qtpoc artists . This weekend, after an incredible reading, Am reminded how I am energized by good people in a room -this is why people go to church, mosque, temple. Language powered by intention and energy Sparks folks, re-energizes their power. And in the best cases, inspires them that they have the power inside themselves to be amazing and achieve the things that bring them joy and provide nourishment to themselves and the people they love. This is why I am an artist, and this is why I am a writer. The best poets writers artists thinkers are always the ones that make me feel like I can do whatever I want because they are so free with their gifts, their skill, the abundant energy. Yesterday I went to a reading that was perfect for the 40 days of self, a reminder that even though you might be doing something to improve yourself, do not forget to take the time to Find spaces that spark your energy and re-charge you for for the life you want to be living. On August 9th, 2014, Mike Brown was shot by the police in Ferguson, Missouri. In the past year we've seen an important movement blossom and build, centering black people and forcing others community of colors to confront what it means to be in solidarity and in community. This album is mixtape of movement songs created by South Asian, Asian Americans and Black musicians/activists in the past few years. Mishthi Music is a site that primarily focuses on sharing South Asian American music and we feel strongly that to truly culture shift values, we need to use arts, music and pop culture. This mixtape is our little contribution as Desi Americans to this movement that is centering #BlackLivesMatter and pushing for racial justice.
