Ok ok ok gonna give @cobaltbeam some major love for this commission request of my son and Tech. So much love and care went into this lovely piece and I had no doubt that Cobalt would just crush it 💯💯💯 Cobalt really sets the bar high to the toppest of tiers. Flawless execution and it the message around it means so much to us!

A little backstory under the cut:

My son is autistic and nonspeaking. My husband and I are fans of TBB and I was so ecstatic that there was quite a bit of neurodiversity represented in bad batch. My son has connected the most with a lot of Tech’s scenes (especially the flying lessons lol) and loves to watch that scene over and over again. Flash forward to a con where I met Dee Bradley Baker and requested that he sign a Tech figure box for my son and write some words of encouragement “you have an exceptional mind” based off when Tech calls his own mind exceptional I think in Season 1 or season 7 of TCW (I forget). Well he did it and then I asked Cobalt Beam to bring it to life.

Defective but effective (a Cadet Batch series)

Names:

How each of the Batchers got their name:

Spectre:

Ever since they had learned to walk and talk the batch had struggled on what to call themselves. 99 had gone over a few name ideas with them but so far nothing was working for them.

The first to pick his name was 9901.

99 had just come in to check on the boys when 01 bounded up to him with a huge grin on his face.

"Bluir Bluir, guess what!" He exclaimed bouncing up and down in excitement.

"What is it my boy?" 99 asked chuckling at his eldest's excitement.

"I finally found my name, I finally found it." He cheered.

"What is it then?" 99 asked looking at him.

"Spectre." 01 said looking at him.

"Spectre?" 99 asked looking at him curiously.

"Uh huh, we were reading a holo-novel and the word came up and I just fell in love with it." 01 said eyes gleaming with excitement.

99 smiled at him.

"It certainly suits you...my little Spectre." 99 said chuckling and ruffling Spectre's hair.

Tech:

9907 was hard at work on his latest gadget when 99 came up to him.

"Hello 07, whatcha working on?" 99 asked.

"I'm working on modifying my datapad, to boost it's signal so it can be used in all kinds of different terrains and have better range than a typical scanner." 07 said.

99 chuckled and smiled at him.

"You just love working on your tech stuff don't you?" 99 chuckled.

07 said nothing, instead he simply stared at his datapad.

"Tech.." He repeated.

He looked at 99.

"My name...can it be Tech?" 07 asked looking at 99.

If that's what you want it to be?" 99 asked kneeling down in front of the tiny cadet.

07 was quiet for a moment as he pondered the question before nodding.

"Yes, I quite like that." He said.

"Very well then...Tech." 99 said and Tech smiled at him.

Hunter:

99 was sitting in his barracks when 9902 practically charged in.

"02, I thought you were getting dinner with the others." 99 said looking up from his book in surprise.

"I will in a second, but I have something to tell you." 02 said grinning from ear to ear.

"Oh, what is it?" 99 asked.

"I finally got my name...it's Hunter." 02 told him.

"Hunter?" 99 asked looking as him

"Yeah, I was struggling with my scouting exercise today but when I thought Skitara was going to scold me he said "I'll make a Hunter out of you yet." and it just stuck with me." 02 explained.

"Well Hunter, if that's what you want then that's what your name will be." 99 said and Hunter smiled.

Wrecker:

99 was on his way to his barracks when he saw Wrecker sitting against the wall looking upset.

"03, you okay?" 99 asked looking at him.

03 shook his head.

"04's angry at me again." 03 said.

"What happened this time?" 99 asked.

"I was looking at his toy sniper but it accidentally broke and he was so angry, he said I'm a wrecker." 03 said wiping his eyes.

99 held out a hand for 03 and he took it, 99 helping him up.

"I'll have a talk with him, now Cmon let's get back, it's almost lights out." 99 said.

03 nodded and they began walking back.

As they walked 03 suddenly perked up.

"I just figured out my name...Wrecker." 03 said.

99 chuckled.

"Well if you like it." 99 chuckled and Wrecker smiled.

Cobalt:

05 was pacing around the barracks while Wrecker was sitting on the floor reading.

"You okay 05?" Wrecker asked.

"I just can't figure out what I want my name to be, I've tried a few now but none of them sound right." 05 said huffing in annoyance.

"Bluir said these things just come to you, but you just have to be patient." Wrecker said.

"I know Wrecks, but it's only me and 04 now who don't have names, it's unfair." 05 huffed sitting down next to Wrecker, crossing his arms and pouting in annoyance.

Wrecker looked at 05's blue eyes and suddenly the most spectacular idea came to him.

"What about Cobalt." Wrecker suggested.

05 looked at him in confusion.

"Cause of your eyes, you're like the only clone ever with blue eyes, why not name yourself after it." Wrecker said.

05 thought about it for a moment before a huge grin broke out on his face.

"Cobalt huh...I love it." 05 said grinning.

Wrecker was caught off guard when Cobalt suddenly tackled him in a hug.

"Thanks Wrecks." Cobalt smiled.

"No problem Cobalt." Wrecker chuckled returning the hug.

Crosshair:

The batch were all extremely nervous, they had a training exercise today which usually they wouldn't be worried about but this one was being observed by Jango Fett himself so they were seriously on edge.

Thankfully they passed the training exercise with ease.

"Those clones are quite the group 99." Jango said.

"Yes sir, I'm very proud of them." 99 nodded.

"Mind if I say hello?" Jango asked.

"Go ahead." 99 said.

Jango and 99 walked up to the batch who stood at attention as they approached.

"Boys this is Jango Fett, introduce yourselves please." 99 said.

"Clone cadet Spectre sir." Spectre said.

"Clone cadet Hunter sir." Hunter said.

"Clone cadet Wrecker sir." Wrecker said.

"Clone cadet Cobalt sir." Cobalt said.

"Clone cadet Tech sir." Tech said.

"Cadet 9904 sir." 04 said.

"You don't have a name yet?" Jango asked.

04 shook his head.

"Not yet." 04 said.

"Well a name is something that makes you unique, it's a special thing, I was watching you earlier, you're quite the marksman...I'd hate to be in your Crosshair." Jango said ruffling 04's blond hair.

This got the young clone thinking.

After chatting with Jango the batch were headed to the mess hall to grab lunch.

"That was certainly an intresting execersise, what did you think 04?" Hunter asked noticing how quiet the younger clone had been.

"Crosshair." 04 said suddenly.

The others all turned to him confused.

"The names Crosshair." 04 announced with a grin.

Bad batch Modern Au Headcannons: Road Trips Part 1

Hunter:

Hunter is responsible for driving himself, Crosshair, Omega, Batcher, Echo and Tech

Has the worst singing voice imaginable, Crosshair claims he could use it to break serial killers

Hunter is the typical American dad stereotype (much to everyones horror) on road trips

Constantly reaches for snacks, Echo tells Hunter he's going to crash doing that one day

Crosshair:

Passenger princess, grumbles the entire time (ironically he gets carsick in cars but on his motorcycle he's immune)

Usually naps most of the trip but when he's awake he typically listens to music on his phone

Will usually let Omega ramble away to him or will listen in on what Tech and Omega are talking about

Batcher lays on his lap the entire trip, he says he doesn't like it but he totally does

Tech:

Is usually on his phone the entire trip, usually texting Phee or just watching YouTube

Points out intresting sights to Omega and explains facts to her about them

Echo:

Spends most of the trip watching Disney movies with Omega

After lunch he let's Omega rest herself against him

Sometimes naps too

Omega:

Spends the trip watching Disney movies or looking at the sights

Takes a nap after lunch

Likes it when Echo tells her stories about when he and the others were younger..the more embarrassing the better

Fives:

He typically rides with Trix and Luna in his red pickup

Has been constantly pulled over for speeding much to Echo's embarrassment

Like Cobalt and Crosshair he's sulking a bit because he couldn't bring his motorcycle

Starling family:

Wrecker and Katie will often alternate between driving, sometimes Cynthia will sit in the front and Wrecker in the back with the twins, when she learned to drive she also drives for a little bit

James is always that one kid that has to pee 30 minutes after leaving, Sarah tells him it's because he drinks way too much doctor pepper before they leave...not that it stops him next time

Sarah likes to listen to music or watch a movie while they're driving, James will either watch it too or read a book

Wrecker makes a bunch of snacks for everyone for the trip, he makes things such as quiche, sausage rolls and fruit pies for the kids to enjoy through the trip

Wachowski family:

Joey despises long road trips, not because he gets carsick, because he hates sitting still for so long, so they have to make regular stops so he can stretch his legs

Daniel watches movies on his tablet for most of the trip, either that or he'll read or nap

When Daniel naps on trips Boba let's him use him as a pillow, Daniel claims Boba is the best pillow

Boba will either listen to music or read while on trips

Chapter 4: The New Morning

Cobalt couldn't sleep.

It was so annoying, he'd been tossing and turning for nearly an hour now but he just couldn't get his eyes to stay closed, he'd tried everything, putting the blanket fully over himself, lying on top of the blanket, just about every sleeping position he could think off, he even had a quick bathroom trip to see if he needed to pee (admittedly he had) but even that hadn't been any use.

He only had one option left and was very nervous about it.

Slowly getting up he tiptoed into the hallway and slowly walked into 99's room.

He tiptoed over to the bit but stopped just short of 99's bed.

He shuffled his feet and bit his lip nervously as he tried to decide if it was was really worth waking him up when 99 stirred and looked at him.

"Cobalt, is everything alright?" He asked.

"I can't sleep...I'm sorry for waking you." Cobalt said.

"It's alright, do you want to stay here?" 99 asked.

"Could I?" He asked.

99 nodded and moved the blanket allowing Cobalt to climb into bed.

The next thing he knew the sunlight was shining into his eyes, grumbling he turned over on his other side and rubbing his eyes. He was suddenly staring at an older woman who was smiling warmly at him.

"Hello." Cobalt said tiredly rubbing his eyes.

"Hello, why are you in our bed sweetie?" She asked warmly.

"Umm sorry, me and my brothers we're..." Cobalt began.

The nice woman smiled warmly at him.

"It's alright sweetheart, 99 already explained everything." She said warmly.

"Cobalt isn't it?" She asked.

He nodded.

"Yes ma'am." He nodded.

"I can see why, those are the bluest eyes I've ever seen." She said.

Cobalt giggled shyly and looked at her smiling shyly.

"Who are you?" He asked.

"I'm Shaak ti." She said smiling.

Cobalt's stomach rumbled loudly and Shaak ti chuckled as Cobalt looked away embarrassed.

"Hungry sweetheart?" Shaak ti asked.

Cobalt nodded shyly and Shaak ti held out her arms.

"Want me to carry you?" She asked and Cobalt nodded letting her pick him up.

They headed into the kitchen and Shaak ti set Cobalt down on the kitchen counter and got to work preparing toast, bacon and eggs, Cobalt passing her something if she requested it.

It was nearly ready when Hunter, Wrecker, Crosshair and Tech all walked into the kitchen all yawning and rubbing their eyes.

"Cobalt there you are." Wrecker said.

"You had us worried." Hunter said.

"Hello boys." Shaak ti greeted turning around.

The other jumped startled.

"Who are you?" Hunter asked alarmed.

Just then 99 came in and saw what was going on.

"Ah boys this is my wife Shaak ti, Shaak ti this is Hunter, Wrecker, Crosshair, Tech and that one there is Cobalt, these are the boys I told you about yesterday." 99 said.

They all waved at her awkwardly.

"We made you breakfast." Cobalt said indicating the plates on the counter.

The boys all took their plates and sat down to eat, joined not long later by Trix, Echo and Fives.

"So what are you guys watching?" Fives asked plopping down next to Wrecker.

"Something called Scooby doo." Wrecker said.

"Wait, you've never seen Scooby Doo?" Fives asked amazed.

Wrecker shook his head and Fives gasped dramatically.

"Oh my friend Scooby is an absolute classic, how could you have not seen it." Fives said dramatically and Wrecker shrugged grinning.

The boys all watched cartoons and ate their breakfast laughing at either the cartoon or Fives's jokes neither 99 or Shaak ti could tell.

The boys all got ready for the day and Shaak ti couldn't help but notice how worn the five new boys clothes seemed, she also took note of how thin and dishevelled they looked, now she wasn't one to judge but clearly their mother hadn't been doing her job.

99 approached Hunter.

"Hunter I looked in the phone book yesterday and I didn't see the surname you mentioned?" 99 asked.

Neither failed to notice the way the boys tensed.

Just then the news channel came on with a broadcast.

"Five young boys from Tipoca city have gone missing, their names are Hunter Se age 9, Wrecker Se age 8, Cobalt Se age 6, Crosshair Se age 4 and Tech Se age 4, these boys are the children of Mistress Nala Se and any information on their current whereabouts is appreciated." The reporter said.

Everyone looked at the five boys who tensed in horror.

"Uh oh." Hunter said having a bad feeling about what was next.

Chapter 1: holding out

Ages:

Hunter: 9

Wrecker: 8

Date: June 14th 2001

Hunter fett couldn't sleep, just how could he.

His little brother Tech still hadn't returned from when Nala Se had taken him away that morning.

This was hardly new for Hunter or the rest of his brothers.

At random Nala Se would take them away and perform whatever experiments it was she performed on them, the aftermath always leaving said brother scared, tired and depressed.

It tore Hunter apart seeing his brothers suffer this way, and he hated himself for how little he could do stop it, the most he could do was comfort whichever brother it was that was subjected to Nala Se's latest round of horrors, but Hunter still didn't feel he was doing enough, not even close.

If he could he'd get his brothers out of this place but where would they go and who would look after five young boys on the run from their abusive mother.

He was brought out of his thoughts by somebody stirring next to him. He looked and saw a pair of blue eyes staring directly at him.

"Cobalt, I thought you were asleep." Hunter said.

"Can't sleep, miss Tech." Cobalt said.

Hunter nodded and stroked his hair.

"Yeah, me too, but he'll be back soon, just sleep and the time will go faster." Hunter said.

"I'll try." Cobalt said.

Hunter let his younger brother curl up closer to him and sure enough the sounds of soft snores told him Cobalt had fallen asleep again.

Hunter looked and saw Wrecker and Crosshair were both still asleep.

Hunter sighed rubbing his eyes, trying to stay awake for his brothers, but he was just so tired...physically and mentally.

All Hunter had ever wanted was for him and his brother's to have a normal life, too not be prodded and poked and treated as though they were merely objects.

Hunter didn't know at what point he fell asleep, but the suddenly awoke to the sound of a door opening, the others waking up alongside him.

They saw their mother as well as Tech in the doorway.

"Breakfast is in an hour." She said emotionlessly before pushing Tech into the room and leaving.

The others all got up and hugged Tech.

It was during this hug Hunter muttered to himself "We've got to get out of here."

99 was standing at the door to the house once more going over the instructions to Rex.

"Make sure Wrecker brushes his teeth before bed he sometimes forgets, don't let Cobalt have too much sugar before bed or he won't get to sleep until early the next morning, make sure Tech and Crosshair's night light is set on low so it doesn't hurt Crosshair's eyes and make sure that if Hunter has a migraine take him upstairs, give him some water, medicine and make him take a nap...should I write this down?" 99 asked looking for a pen and paper.

"Don't worry 99 I've got everything handled, plus I'm sure Trix will help me get everything right." Rex said.

Trix looked at 99 with a slightly annoyed expression.

"I still don't see why I can't look after them myself, I'm the oldest." He said huffing slightly.

Trix was right and he would have agreed if he was only going to be away for the afternoon, but he was going to be gone the whole weekend and while the others were all very well behaved, they could be a handful and would definitely be too much for an 11 year old boy to handle himself.

"It's not about being the oldest Trix, I'm going to be gone for the entire weekend and it'd definitely become too overwhelming for you all by yourself, but I have a special job for you, I want you to help Rex and Cody with the others while I'm gone and make sure nothing goes wrong, can I trust you soldier." He said playfully.

Trix grinned and gave him a small salute.

"Sir yes sir." He smiled.

"99 we'd better go now or you'll be late for your flight." Cody said slightly impatiently.

"Just a second Cody, okay boys I'm going give your old dad a hug before he goes!" 99 called.

There was practically a stampede as all the boys hugged 99 saying their goodbyes and wishing him a good time.

99 kissed each boy on the forehead and instructed them to behave for Rex and Cody and promised to call when he landed before getting into the passenger seat next to Cody who waved to the others before driving off.

The boys all waved and watched 99 leave before Rex and Trix lead them all inside.

They all went into the living room.

"Okay, so what's on the activities list?" Rex asked looking at the boys.

"We've all done our homework, we usually do it a couple of hours before tea so we can relax all weekend." Trix told him.

"Okay good, that's sorted then, why don't you guys all go play and we'll order some pizzas for tea, I've rented some movies from the video store so we can watch those later." He said.

The boys all cheered and went to play.

Cobalt and Fives were lying on the floor in front of the TV playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on Fives' Sega Genesis which he'd gotten for his birthdays few years ago, Echo and Tech were sitting at the table, Echo was reading a book to Tech, helping him pronounce some of the harder words. Wrecker and Hunter were rough housing playfully in the grass of the back garden under Trix's supervision, Crosshair however simply sat down on the sofa next to Rex.

Rex pulled out his gameboy and had been playing for a for minutes when he saw Crosshair staring at him.

"Hey Crosshair, you okay?" Rex asked looking at him.

"What are you playing?" Crosshair asked pointing at Rex's gameboy.

"Batman the animated series...you want a go?" He asked and Crosshair nodded.

Rex handed him the gameboy and after quickly teaching Crosshair how to use it let him play.

Leaving Crosshair on the couch to play he sat down next to Fives and Cobalt.

"So what are you two playing?" He asked.

"Sonic the hedgehog 2, you jump, run, roll and collect rings as fast as you can, it's really fun." Cobalt said pausing the game and looking at Rex.

"You guys mind if I watch you play while Crosshair is holding my gameboy hostage." He chuckled.

Both boys nodded and continued playing their game.

After a few hours everyone was getting hungry so Rex called everyone together so he could get their orders.

"So a plain cheese for me and Hunter, two more plain cheeses for Cobalt, Fives, Wrecker and Echo, a half pepperoni, half sausage for Tech and Crosshair, a full pepperoni for Cody once he gets back and two cheesy garlic breads." Rex said writing everything done before going into the kitchen to make the order.

While he was doing that he instructed the others to wash up before the food came and they all filed upstairs to do so.

Once they were finished they went downstairs where Rex told them the pizza would be delivered soon and to go pick out a movie from the ones he'd brought.

They picked one and it had been playing for roughly 15 minutes when the door opened and Cody came in greeting Rex and the boys and dramatically flopping down on the couch making them giggle.

"Pizza's gonna be here soon Kote." Rex smiled.

"Good, I am starving." Cody said.

"Wolffe and Fox'll be happy to see him at their military graduation." Rex said.

"Yeah, shame we couldn't go but hey Bly and Ponds have the place to themselves for the weekend, Bly's probably already invited his girlfriend over." Cody said snorting.

Rex laughed too and got up hearing a knock at the door.

He opened it and the pizza man was there holding a stack of boxes.

Rex paid him and brought in the pizzas which eveyone happily tucked into.

After the movie and pizza Rex and Cody with some help from Trix got everyone bathed, teeth done and in their pajamas.

Once that was dealt with they settled back in front of the TV where a fierce Mario Kart tournament began.

The first round began with Cody and Tech. It was fierce even with Cody going easy on Tech. Tech was remarkably good at the game for a 5 year old and beat Cody with ease.

"Nice one squirt." Cody said, Tech beamed in pride.

The tournament went on for a few hours, Cody wasn't sure when he dozed off but he woke up a few hours later to see the tournament still going strong.

His eyes widened when he saw the time 11:30PM, thank god it wasn't a school night.

Rubbing his eyes he got up addressing everyone.

"Okay guys pack it in for the night, it's time for bed." He instructed.

The others all pouted and grumbled but Rex and Cody ushered them upstairs and got them all tucked into bed.

Once they were all asleep Rex went into 99's room and Cody headed downstairs to crash on the Couch, all of them excited for what tomorrow would bring.
