#INSTAGRAM ROZSA AND REAL I have been on a few journeys with a few people since becoming Poet Laureate - but I have already been on several journeys with others. I have been working with The ROSZA Foundation and the REAL Program as a cameo contributor, as a REAL Weaver, and as an Artist enlisted to assist the REAL Participants with Professional Poetic Interpretation and Poetic Reflection. I am so over-the-moon-grateful for the opportunity to bring Poetry into this amazing and multifaceted space, in ways that have so far been unexplored and unprecedented. Geraldine Ysselstein, you are a Superb Arts Leadership Director. Effortlessly, you have lead us all with grace and ease - and an insane amount of dedicated and unending hard work. You have a knack of teaching everyone with every other sentence - when your phone is not alerting you to pick up your children (LOL) - and a sense of encapsulating each group experience with exactly the right words. You have put a great deal of trust in my abilities to make Poetry not only available and accessible, but relevant to these participants of an already visionary experience. I truly hope that I may continue with you and alumni alike - in efforts of broadening our multi-disciplined, artistic community. It has been amongst the greatest learning and sharing experiences that I’ve ever lived. Most sincerely, Thank You. This production was also a dedication, a testament and celebration of Black Excellence and Artistic Contribution to The Grand. Footprints Dance Project & Page2StageProductions… Day 20 of 20… I have been the fortunate Instructor of the Poetry and Spoken Word Arts Program for Footprints Dance Project Society of Alberta. Thank You for pushing me to develop a method of reaching Grades 4, 5, & 6 with absolutely - no issue. Thank You, especially to this student who wrote these beautiful words to me as a personal send-off. FEBRUARY IN AUGUST It’s August - and it’s February. That statement is not the result of an error with my internal chronometer. Nor, is it the happenstance of a rift in the space-time continuum. (This is not Star Trek, Rest In Planetary Peace, Sister Nichelle Nichols.) Do allow me to explain. An All-Black Company of Performing Artists will usually find an opportunity with a non-BIPOC production company, only at one particular time of the year, and that is in February aka: Black History Month. Customarily, Intentionally, performatively, such is and has been the case for years - and years. This, I know to be true, as I have been both the Victim and Victor of this animal bred out of conflicting interests. As your Poet Laureate, I am aiming to alter that narrative - at least, at first, Poetically. “February in August” is a collaborative initiative forged with a game-changing team of creatives in a space becoming more like home for me - The Grand Theatre. Every person, place, and thing - has a history, is here in the present - and is looking towards a hopefully big and bright future. Such is the case with The Grand, presenting this wonderful All-Black Poetry & Spoken Word Extravaganza, celebrating Black Excellence and Artistic Contributions in its Stunning Studio Space. This Marvellous Mâtinée will feature the Poetic Profoundness of: Sholley Powell Alot Of Poetry Chris L. Butler Tanecia Cromwell These four were curated from their resounding, respective featured performances this summer during PitBull Poetry In The Park, in Century Gardens.
