You only pulled me out here because I'm black.
A girl in my 5th hour today who had already called me a bitch. The bitch part didn’t hurt. This did. It’s a reminder to check my biases, though. Right before I put her in detention.

Week One Worn Out
Leading middle schoolers is a rewarding gig, but it is also emotionally battering, especially in the early weeks as you form relationships. Many teachers, especially the emotionally intuitive/semi-introverted sorts, need a few weeks every year to adjust. Kids can be creative and inspiring and direct and hilarious, but they can also be cruel and intolerant... And it's your job to mold them into good people. A tall order!
This has been my pattern in the past, and 6 years in to teaching nothing has changed. Fortunately, my husband knows exactly what to do for me when I get emotionally wiped out in the early weeks--get me a margarita, let me vent, and remind me that I don't have to do this job if I don't want to. That always makes me feel empowered.
Because yes, I am one of those crazy people who CHOOSE middle school. And you know what? Give me 6 weeks and I will be raving about them, because once you get through the shell, they are always worth it.
Can anyone relate?

Sometimes your discussion of the Boston Massacre becomes a commentary on police brutality. These kids are so sharp.

This time of year it always takes me an hour a night to do all my discipline paperwork. If you're in the same situation, help me remember... It gets better after the first six weeks! There's no such thing as a bad kid!
