tying an esports team to a region is a great idea for more reasons than just the blind aping of trad sports that i can only assume was the reasoning behind the OWL's decision. like, look at what happens at international esports events: korean, chinese, european, and north american fans will all rally behind whatever teams from their regions end up making it through the brackets, to say nothing of how fervently vietnamese, latam, etc. fans will cheer when their regions so much as win a match.
having a team represent a place makes for fantastic marketing and provides pre-packaged narratives: new york and philadelphia, liverpool and manchester, city-based rivalries are as old as sports is. the reason the overwatch league fucked this easy win up is because they, very foolishly, declined to do what every other esport ever has done and institute a system of regional leagues, instead wanting to boast a "global league". but apart from the obvious logistical issues that the morons who came up with should thank their lucky stars COVID obviated immediately, this undercuts all the aforementioned benefits of tying your teams to cities!
a san francisco-LA match has immediate meaning to anyone, whether they're familiar with the esports histories and players of the teams or not. a shanghai-atlanta match, or a london-seoul match, or a vancouver-florida(?! not a city lads) match all mean basically nothing. plus, the way the OWL did it, making orgs set up teams with no branding connection to themselves, also made it hard to get invested in preexisting esports narratives: the lunatic-hai kongdoo panthera rivalry faded into memory when those teams became the 'seoul dynasty' and 'london spitfire', CoD fans eager for the envy/optic rivlary had to overcome the barrier to investment that was those teams being the 'houston outlaws' and 'dallas fuel'. actiblizz's own call of duty league would later rectify this awful decision by letting teams go by names like 'atlanta faze' and 'optic texas', but by then the OWL's fate was already sealed.
so what i'm saying is that a franchised, city-based model could have worked for an esports league, if it hadn't been for the boneheaded, institutionbally embedded blizzard mantra that they're the specialest boys alive and need to reinvent the wheel every time they do anything at all
overwatch leaguye was doomed from the start but NOT because of the idea of city baesd teams as many people claim that idea could have been great it was just the execution of it within the owl framework that was unworkable

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE PACIFIC SHOWDOWN DAY TWO :
When : starting 10pm Pacific / 1 AM Eastern
Where to watch : English cast / Korean cast / Chinese cast x x x
Please support T2! The pacific showdown will directly impact the gauntlet later this year where new owl talent will definately be scouted.
From yesterday : winners brackets are done! KR region titans Element Mystic and O2 Blast are victorious and will face each other on Sunday for a bye into tournament finals.
Element Mystic is the first seed of KR region s1. The team has a long history and is one of the tournament favorites.
O2 Blast, KR region runner up, sports several veteran talents - including Kaiser and HOOMBABA and is notably the only team to defeat runaway this season.
Today's programing : losers brackets
Talon vs LGE Huya
Talon Esports is the winner of PAC region s1 with a mixed roster of Korean, Taiwanese and Thai players, this team is dynamic and adaptable. Notable players include dps line Bashful (ex kongdoo) and oPuTo (team Thailand & ex MEGA esports).
LGE Huya is chengdu hunters academy team with a Chinese and Korean mixed roster and winner of CN region s1, ending the dominating streak of T1w in season 1 finals.
ORDER VS T1w
ORDER won AUS region s1 dethorning Sydney Dropbears for the first time ever. I, personally, am a big fan of Adam's dva and Yuki is undoubtedly one of the top dps players out of AUS Region.
T1w, as always, had a great season in CN region, losing only to LGE Huya in the finals. Mijia will play doomfist at any given opportunity and I would give this team the 'most likely not to play 3-3' title from this list.

what your fave owl team says about you
la gladiators: glads fans vary. some are surefour fans, some are hydration fans, some are just here for fissure’s vengeance storyline. every single one of them cried the first time lag got out of eighth place in the overall standings.
la valiant: the term “sister team” is the worst thing that ever happened to you. you like every valla teammate but there is One Specific Player you would lay down your life for in an instant (and it’s probably grim). there is a very good chance you’re not cishet
philadelphia fusion: you’re 100% convinced carpe deserves league mvp. every day you wake up and lay offerings at the feet of the gods of choking in overwatch, begging them to curse another team, and every day they laugh in your face.
boston uprising: you’re vicariously living through the ultimate team of friends because you’re lonely. you probably watch actual sports like “baseball” or “football”. press f for dive meta.
london spitfire: your mood since stage one has been “missing rascal and fissure on main”. you are probably a very nice person who’s just trying to get through this season more intact than kongdoo panthera and gc busan. your worst enemy is the poor ovw developer who designed oasis.
dallas fuel: you were an envyus fan. the rage you feel towards kyky every day of your life could kill God.
seoul dynasty: either you were a lunatic hai fan or you think jehong and fleta are hot (it could be a combination of both). you don’t care what owl tries it will NEVER top apex
florida mayhem: you’re a misfits fan or you really like sayaplayer. you wish they had different team colors. im going off mostly assumptions bc i know exactly one true mayhem stan.
sf shock: you and sinatraa are in a very intense love/hate relationship. you probably main dps
houston outlaws: either you loved the owwc usa team or before owl the extent of your esports knowledge was xqc clips. you’ve probably used xD unironically at some point.
nyxl: you, while watching fans of every other team agonize over whether their team will get into playoffs - “We’re Just Fuckin’ Good, Babey”. you’re convinced ark and libero are underappreciated and you’re right.
shanghai dragons: you’ve said it before and you’ll say it again - shd is the most attractive owl team. if given the legal opportunity you would kill the entire shanghai dragons management and u4 yourself.

I'm curious, what are your OWL power rankings?
HOO BOY let’s take this one under the cut lmfao
1. nyxl + vancouver: if neither of them choke where it matters most i think a beautiful rivalry could form between them. definitely, i think they’ll be facing off against each other in stage 1 finals.
2. fusion + london: these two teams are very temperamental to me for different reasons. no one expected philly to make it as far as they did last season and no one expected london to win it all after a very disappointing performance in stages 3 and 4. they can both be very scary when they decide to wake up and play with their monitors on.
3. paris + reign: full disclosure, i haven’t been watching their games a lot so i’m basing this on the leaderboard rn LOL. but i did see benbest in owwc and i know what soon is capable of, so paris looks like a formidable team. and as much as i dislike dafran he is a solid zarya. this meta is all about tanks tanks tanks and these two teams seem very well off.
4. fuel + shock: both of these teams were mid-tier last season and only started to wake up by the end of it. i think they both have good rein and zarya players so it’s just a matter of who’s going to outplay who.
5. spark: i might be a little optimistic for placing them this high but they were my darlings as soon as they entered the league :( everyone hyped them up like crazy before the season started and i think they’re starting to feel the pressure. i’m concerned about guxue. he was a MONSTER in owwc but now he’s the only chinese player on a full kr roster. i know how well he can play but i’m worried the language barrier might be causing some miscommunications and it’s preventing him from playing to his full potential
6. seoul + gladiators: seoul is another team that disappointed last season but i think they’re finally starting to show up. their tanks are stronger now for sure, but they still seem to need time to really come into their own with this meta. i think it’s the same for gladiators. solid tanks, but overall they keep getting outplayed.
7. valiant: their match against nyxl recently was a nail biter but in the end they couldn’t show up. i really have an issue with how they play their tanks. they put all the emphasis on them but fate always seems to die first!!! i think he’s too aggressive and the team can’t keep him up or support him as a result. he was the same way in owwc. idk in a meta that’s all about the tanks, fate plays way too recklessly for me.
8. charge and dragons: WHERE WERE YOU WHEN SHANGHAI GOT THEIR FIRST WIN?? but fr it’s an entirely different roster now and they can’t be underestimated anymore. they’re basically kongdoo panthera lol. as for charge, i think a lot of people slept on them coming in but they’re pretty good! they definitely have potential
9. defiant, hunters, florida: defiant is fairly high on the leaderboard, but i feel like they’re not really that amazing. i don’t think they’ve been up against terribly impressive teams so far. hunters is weird to me bc they just do their own thing and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. florida completely changed up their roster but i’m not really hyped on them yet. interesting that they took the series from philly recently but that might have just been philly getting cocky
10. boston and houston: i feel like boston have really screwed themselves by having fusions on a two-way contract. he’s insane at rein and he absolutely could have carried, but now he can’t play for the rest of the stage. also fuck huk. boston has a lot of internal issues they need to work out before they can remind everyone that they were undefeated in stage 3 last season. as for houston……. well. too bad, so sad
11. justice: it hurts to put them at the bottom but i just. idk :’( i hated how ppl ragged on janus when he was on nyxl but it’s true, he is just nowhere near as clutch a rein player as mano. even though wizardhyeong is coaching, i feel like he’s used to a team of a specific caliber and he just doesn’t have it anymore with this team. i really hope they prove me wrong though

It really puzzles me that many people who do their power rankings for OWL S2 rate Vancouver so much higher than Shangai. Like yeah, Vancouver is Runaway but Shanghai picked up most of Kongdoo Panthera? You know, the team that took Runaway to map 7 in Contenders s2 finals? And almost won? That team?
#And I doubt geguri fearless and diem will stop them from being still as good?#Like don't get me wrong Vancouver will do great im sure#I just don't get putting Shanghai much lower than them#Lum.txt

I have a feeling that Dallas Fuel only signed Rascal because they wanted someone popular. They didn’t think about how they would actually incorporate him into the team dynamic and just hoped it would all work out.
Remember when KyKy said he didn’t expect Rascal to be such a big personality or for him to have so many ideas regarding the team? Like, you picked up the CAPTAIN OF KONGDOO PANTHERA who is also known for being loud like??? Did you know anything about him at all besides his hero pool? What was the plan??

Behind the Scenes Part.1

Houston Outlaws : [Focus]
Boston Uprising : [ SIGHTS & SOUNDS ]
Florida Mayhem : [ ASCEND ]
London Spitfire : [ 7 Minutes in Spitfire ]
New York Excelsior : [ UNLEASHED ]
Philadelphia Fusion : [ Fusion All-Access ]

About the Kyky interview:
It's far more likely that Rascal had ideas about how the team should play/work based off his experiences on Kongdoo/Spitfire and there were clashes of opinions because of this rather than Rascal trying to impose ~Korean culture~ on the team.
Even so, saying that this has been "the biggest hardship overall" is so mind boggling. lmao.
