I'm pretty wine drunk which maybe isn't the best time to be watching The Bill, but was Ted Roach maybe a little bit in love with Roxanne and a lottle conflicted about it?

05x34 - Free Wheel
CID are undercover, centred around the Hilton National Hotel on the case of an arms dealer. Alistair is on reception, Ted and Jim are drivers for a fashion wholesaler with a convenient office across the road. Tosh is a general lookout hiding in an upstairs room at the wholesalers. Alistair alerts Tosh to the movement of their target. "Buttons and Bows..." Tosh drawls into the radio to alert Jim and Ted in an effort to give himself something more interesting than staring out of a window and eating. "Alright, we don't need a comedian!" Ted scowls, following the man in the van. He drops Jim off behind him to follow him on foot.
Jim follows him onto the local High St whilst Ted returns to the hotel to update Alistair. Ted is concerned that the receptionist is giving him funny looks and answers Alistair's insistence that everything is OK with "It's got to be better than OK!"As they get into the lift, a man exits with a woman who's clearly not his wife. Ted, of course, has a good look! Alistair reassures him he'll talk to the receptionist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yorkie finds CID empty. Bob similarly finds the front desk unmanned and presses the door to let a waiting couple in. They don't move, so he goes to ask if he can help. "We're being seen, thanks."
Ted and Alistair search Rouse's room with great care to return everything exactly as it was. Jim has to duck into a shop doorway to avoid being seen when Rouse turns round after checking his watch. Ted finds the mini bar and gets Alistair to come and unlock it. "I hate the smell of too much money," Ted says, purposely shaking the bottle of champagne. "Especially if it's bent and especially if it belongs to someone else." For what's meant to be an expensive room... It's really not. Even the view isn't that great! They find absolutely nothing.
Yorkie comes back down and sees Bob in the front office. He tells Bob that the couple waiting at the door are odd. They have been in half a dozen times that week already and he doesn't want to deal with them anymore. He wants CID to take over, but no one is in! Bob tells him that CID are all on a job. Yorkie explains that the couple's car was stolen 10 days ago and they won't rest until it's found. They'd left the keys in the ignition and didn't realise until it was too late. It all adds up to an unsolvable crime, and Yorkie is at his wits' end. (Interesting fact: this couple were married IRL, which probably helps them bounce off each other so well).
Alistair returns the suspect's door key to him when he arrives back at the hotel. He's very polite and asks the receptionist, who clearly hates him, to tell him if he's overdoing it. "I will. You're overdoing it."
The car theft victims are surprised to hear there's no news on their car. They tell Yorkie that they've been doing their own surveillance to try and locate the car. Yorkie smiles politely as they speak at the same time, and are generally a bit eccentric. "No other car will do for us, just that one. We just want our own car back. Please."
Ted can't believe that their suspect didn't do anything of note whilst out - he didn't talk to anyone, buy anything, or meet anyone. Ted doesn't let the job stop him being Ted, however....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rouse is not making any calls out of the hotel and no one is ringing in to speak to him either. Jim says he is playing £100 a night (now £260) to walk around the block and look in a few shop windows.
The boys aren't happy. They've got most of CID sat tied up on someone else's case whilst their own cases are getting left behind. Rouse hasn't had a conviction for arms dealing for 8 years, but Ted, who has had experience with him in the past, is adamant that he's up to something. Ted points out that the lack of conviction doesn't mean he's turned over a new leaf - he just hasn't been caught. Ted reminds Jim that their suspect is the subject of special reports from almost every major crime unit in the country. "If they couldn't get a case against him in 8 years, what chance have we got?" Jim sighs. "Our brief is to watch and wait, night and day. Ok?" Ted snaps. Jim scowls, claiming it only needs two of them and not the entire CID team. "You know why? I'll tell you why. Burnside." he spits. "He wants the arrest to take place here and nowhere else. He's got two fingers up to all the crime squad and all the surveillance teams across the country!" Tosh isn't happy to hear that he's got to remain at the wholesalers, keeping watch for a second night. "I've got an oversexed wife waiting for me at home!" "What you need is domestic backup - an oversexed lodger!"
Alistair watches as a courier drops off a parcel with only 'to be collected' written on it. "Can't you read?" the receptionist snaps. She admits it's an unusual experience but is too busy to consider it further. Alistair opens it with a view to replacing the envelope. It's what looks like a car key. Rouse is still in his room, and the cars in the car park are all accounted for as owned by guests. Ted suggests it could belong to any vehicle and so could not be involved in their operation, so keep an eye, but don't let it draw focus. Alistair returns to the receptionist. "Keep smiling."
Tumblr media
The doorman clarifies that Rouse arrived via taxi and says he recognises Ted. "Are you the er..." "Department of Trade and Industry."
Tosh asks if they're bugging Rouse's phone. Jim says that wasn't possible, but the switchboard is logging calls to and from his room. The only problem is that there aren't any! Tosh reckons he has to be waiting for something or someone, given the £100 a night luxury.
Bob tells Yorkie that the odd couple have rung back and want to speak to him. Bob took pity on poor Yorkie and told them that he was busy. The couple want to ask for Yorkie's permission to advertise their lost car. "They didn't want to cut across your process of investigation." He warns him that they're going to ring back.
At the hotel, Alistair keeps watch over the parcel as Rouse approaches. "You seem to work long hours." Alistair simply smiles and explains that they're short-staffed at the moment. Rouse asks for matches and doesn't touch or mention the envelope despite it being right in front of them.
The next morning, Jim is quick to wake Tosh from the sleeping bag on the floor so they can swap over.
The receptionist asks Alistair when they're going to be gone, as she wants everything to return to normal. She asks what Mr Rouse has done. Alistair gestures for her to be more discreet and tells her that - so far - Rouse has done nothing. The doorman tells them that a guest booked in last night with a car and he gives him the registration. Alistair questions that because he was on shift and no guest arrived with a car mentioned. The doorman points at a shabbily parked car and complains about it. Alistair tells Ted - it could be bent or it could be someone simply using the hotel car park to park for the night. With that and the key being left for Rouse it's concerning. It's even more concerning when Tosh tells them that there are no such number plates registered.
Ted passes on a message from Frank for everyone to stay in place. Alistair suggests they're going to need a changeover before long as Rouse spoke to him and questioned him about working such long hours. Ted reassures him that whatever is going on can't take much longer. Known associates of Rouse have turned up at a hotel in Southampton situated near the dock. It looks like they're about to ship out - literally. The local police did the same searching of the room - carefully - as Sun Hill did and found not only the name of the hotel they're staking out but also Rouse's room number on a scrap of paper.
Yorkie's favourite couple return and ask for him. They think they've found their car but it's got a different number plate on it. They do have a spare set of keys with them but haven't approached it or tried them yet as they didn't want to destroy finger print evidence. You can see where this is going, right...? They tell Yorkie that the car is parked in a hotel carpark. He agrees to have it looked into - in the hope he'll get rid of them.
Alistair returns to the reception desk to find the package gone. The receptionist tells him Rouse collected it when he paid his bill. He's currently packing in his room. Alistair updates Tosh, Ted and Jim and they all prepare 'for lift off'. The car reported is still in place, for now. All parties drive to the hotel, ready to pick Rouse up. Unfortunately for them, Yorkie arrives in a marked police car with the couple so they can show him the car. Yep, it's the target car. He goes inside to speak at the desk as Rouse approaches. The look on the receptionist's face gives them away as Rouse looks at her. He notices Yorkie arriving and approaches the desk, calmly telling them he collected the key package by mistake. "It's not mine after all." Rouse leaves and Yorkie approaches the desk, asking Alistair what he's doing there. Thankfully Rouse is far enough to have not heard, but the damage was already done. Alistair radios the others and tells them the operation has been blown. "You bloody fool!" he chides Yorkie, jumping over the desk [captured in gif for... reasons]. "What's going on?" Yorkie blinks, following him outside.
Tumblr media
Rouse walks away as the doorman approaches the irritating couple and asks them to move their car. The husband gets in the car. Alistair looks at Rouse's retreating back as the car is about to be started...
Tumblr media
People start screaming after the explosion and the officers run towards the scene. It's obvious it's too late - even with the almost instantaneous fire engine sirens.
Ted can only watch the horror as Rouse walks away into the distance.

Honestly, im kind of tired of strade being portrayed as this cunning, super smart and careful, manipulator.
You cant convince me this fucker is not living by "im here for a good time not a long time".
He is too impulsive for planing, there is no secure internet connection in sight,no discs or external hard-drives,nothing.
this man knows his heavy machinery, but when it comes to delicate shit like computers or cameras?
"Whats the fun in them? They have nothing to offer me beyond what i use them for"
Filming on auto ,no editing, blocks the lens when he gets too into it.
I bet it keeps Ren both hopeful for a rescue and frustrated with the bitch.

I finally got around to watching Starship for the first time a week or so ago, and Bug has been on my mind a lot since. So I may have filled up a sketchbook page mostly with doodles of him :) (with some added bonus Roach and goat Ted)

Anyone have any headcanons about how Ted and Roxanne actually met? Or about how exactly she came to be his informant? I'm trying to flesh out some ideas, but they're not quite coming together how I want them to.

05x35 - Only A Bit Of Thieving
Ted arrives at an address and notes that a panel on the front door has been broken and covered up with a thin piece of wood. He introduces himself to the house owner, Mrs Power. She is confused by his arrival as she's already spoken to an officer about her recent break-in. She thought she was safe as she had all the - at that time - mod cons and non-electric security features available to secure the house. She's now very paranoid as she and her husband moved from their last home due to a burglary. Her husband is away on business, so she's home alone. Ted tells her there has been a spate of burglaries in the area. There is a pattern that shows the burglars return soon after to take what they missed. Ted asks if she has a room that overlooks the back garden, she tells him she has a sewing room on the top floor that does and agrees for them to use it for an obbo.
Ken has a three-day secondment with CID and is very excited because he doesn't see himself ending his days in uniform. [Oh, Kenneth 😪]. He's very excited to stake out the house with Ted, despite Alistair's claim of there being no available overtime. Ted has told Ken that he will get them overtime, so Ken is waiting for him. "The wily old pole cat! He sleeps, you keep watch, and he gets paid for it! How does he do it?!" Alistair exclaims. Alistair and Ted declare the first two rules of CID. 1 - from Ted - know your angles. 2 - from Alistair - don't believe anything that comes from Ted! Ted confirms that, through telling a 'minor untruth,' he's managed to get 4 hours of overtime approved by Brownlow.
At the house, Ted tells Mrs Power that they'll let themselves out of the house when they're done and won't disturb her so she can go to bed as normal. Ted smokes whilst Ken keeps watch, telling him that he can see right into other people's houses with the night sight. "Dirty minded berk!" "Not like that!" Ken asks how Ted managed to swing the overtime, and all he replies is 'politics'. Ken asks again and we get the third rule of CID. "Ask no questions, you get told no lies" He pauses before smirking that Ken was right about seeing right into people's houses. Who was it with the dirty mind?
The night sight allows them to spot three dodgy-looking teens creeping into the garden and taking a ladder. They approach the house and climb onto a flat roof, and start to break in. Ken and Ted leave the house and creep into the garden to see what they're doing. Ken is told to stay out of sight whilst Ted climbs the ladder to disturb the criminals as they break in. Ted warns them to keep still and then shouts to Ken to get the van. Two edge to the side of the roof, whilst one that Ted tackles brings out a knife and threatens to cut him. Ted asks him to give him the knife. The kid contemplates jumping off, but Ted tells him not to as it's too high. Moments later, there's the sound of a scuffle and the lad falls to the ground with a scream. Ken checks on him and shouts for Ted. Ted tells him to call an ambulance.
Tumblr media
Uniform arrive and arrest the other two suspects whilst the paramedics load the injured lad into the ambulance. Bob tells Ken to go to the hospital with the injured lad as he's technically a prisoner. "I can feel it already..." Tony tells the uniformed officers. "Nasty...."
Mrs Power feels sorry for the lad, but Ted is unmoved. "He shouldn't have been up there, should he?!" Christine enters without knocking and tells Ted to follow her. Ted charms Mrs Power and thanks her for everything, but Christine cuts in with "Now!" She tells him the lad was only 14. "Old enough to go out stealing!" insists Ted. Christine demands a full report from him for what happened and tells him she'll be getting one from Ken too, and she'll know if he's intimidated Ken.
At Sun Hill, the other two teens are overwhelmed as they're led into a loud and chaotic Custody. Claire and Tony call the boys' parents and inform them of their arrests and that they need appropriate adults. One of the dads, Mr Wilson, Is furious that he's been woken in the middle of the night and is even more angry to be asked if he knew where his son was. Bob tells him his son he is being charged with attempted burglary. "Didn't get inside, didn't have a chance because of that poxy copper!" Paul then alleges that Ted pushed his friend from the roof.
Bob orders Ken to return to Sun Hill after replacing him at St Hughes. He asks Claire to bring Ken straight to his office and to not let him talk to anyone, especially anyone from CID. Upstairs, Ted is writing his statement and has a call from Christine to go down to her office. Ken returns and goes straight to the Duty Sergeant's office whilst Ted signs his statement and heads down to Christine's office. Their paths do not cross.
Bob asks Ken to tell him exactly what happened, without the aid of his notes. Ken admits that he was in the garden, but he couldn't see what was happening on the roof from where he was. Bob asks him if he realises how serious it is, because it could mean Ted being up for attempted murder. Ken repeats that he was on the ground and couldn't see it. Bob calls it convenient(?!?!) He then suggests that in the 5-10 minutes before the ambulance arrived that Ken and Ted 'compared stories.' If he didn't see it it is the kid's word against his. "You don't have to cover up for him!" It's obvious he's trying to break him to get to the truth and Ken is visibly upset.
Ted hands Christine his statement and she asks if it "displays his usual use of imagination". Considering their past, she's really harsh on Ted and calls Brownlow in. Ted thinks it can wait, but Christine doesn't - especially as CIB are going to be involved.
In an interview room, June recaps Paul's statement, which details Ted moving toward his friend in a threatening manner and his arm being thrown out before his friend fell. She asks him to sign the statement and he hesitates. June asks him if he doesn't agree with the statement and his father tells her that he can't read or write. June tells him to put a cross against it instead and has his father sign the statement. He asks if his son is going to be prosecuted and June says it's up to the juvenile department and the inspector and may take several weeks until they know the answer. Tony updates Bob that the injured lad is now in a coma.
CIB arrive the next day and are greeted by Alec, who leads them to their office for the day.
Ted packs up his things into a briefcase. It's difficult to get the pics to show everything, but the essentials are there: a newspaper, scotch and aspirin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Derek tells him off for causing aggravation over a juvenile thief. His bollocking is very unlike a Brownlow one as it's obvious he very much has his back and has knowledge of him as a person rather than a pawn in the station. Ted, being Ted, is very defensive and points out that he is there to arrest criminals, no matter who or what they are.
Tumblr media
"I hope for your sake CIB sees it the same way!"
The father of Ted's accuser enters the station and asks to see the boss. He refuses to tell Claire what it's about and demands to see Bob. Alec tells Bob that Ken is getting a right grilling from CIB. Bob reveals the hidden biscuits....
Tumblr media
... and tells Alec he has no faith in CIB making the right decision. "You know who and what I mean." He suspects that Ken is going to end up as the loser. "If they put Ken off being a copper, they're not doing anyone any favours." "You've got to admit he's a bit soft sometimes." Bob sums up that Ken is 'dead honest' which won't make him a lot of friends in the long run.
Claire brings Mr Wilson some tea and tells him that Bob has been delayed. He tells her to shove the tea because 'he wants to make a complaint.' Paul looks unsure and wants to leave, but Wilson shouts at him to shut up twice. Bob finally makes it over and tells him that he needs to see the Chief Inspector and CIB, and as CIB are being very thorough, there's no end to the length of time they'll have to wait. Paul looks very uncomfortable and clearly doesn't want to be there. Bob tells him that anything that is found to be untrue will add a charge of perjury to his offences. Wilson snaps that that's a threat and Bob tells him it's a warning and asks Paul again if he's sure. He clarifies that whatever is said has serious consequences for either him or Ted. Wilson accuses him again of threatening his son. Paul looks very uncomfortable and tells Bob that his friend is a nutter and jumped of his own accord. "I'll have you for this!" Wilson snaps at Bob.
At the end of the day, Derek arranges for CIB to be seen out and goes into CID, where Ted is unpacking his suitcase. "Any comments?" "He'd never have made it stick." Ted shrugs. Derek advises him to fork out for a few pints for Bob to thank him for what he did. He tells him he's been very lucky considering his record and how close he came to suspension. "Just get back to your duties."
In CAD, Alec takes a telephone call and tells the caller that he's very sorry to hear that. He goes up to CID and has to tell Ted that the boy has died from a haemorrhage. "I'm sorry, Ted." "What are you looking at me for? Don't go on about it. It wasn't my fault!" Ted says - but his face says a different story.

i just want to be a little sappy on main and say that i am very grateful for those of you that follow me now and those that have stuck with me even after i poofed on and off for like... 2 years. when i was thinking about coming back around this time last year, i was honestly very cautiously optimistic about returning. because i had a lot of grievances and Thoughts™ about my experience here. and i honestly didn't think i would come back--much less be thinking about reviving a second blog. i am still just taking it easy and making sure i come first :) but i'm very happy to be writing like i used to because i really missed it.
