Once read a fanfic where the author apologised for "historical inaccuracies" because they weren't old enough to know which apps were popular.... in 2003.
something I’ve seen in various fandoms now is young artists will draw flip phones with cracked screens. But in my experience, I have never met someone whose flip phone had a screen crack. Those screens were more like something on a calculator or a nintendo ds than like a smartphone. I was a klutz, and my first phone broke because the front half and back half came apart. Like you’d mayyyyybe see it on some of the later flip phones that only had large screens on the front because smartphones had already made them popular, but it was still way more rare.
If you wanna give a character a flip phone and show they’re clumsy, they’re more likely to have the paint scratched like hell or parts of the plastic chipped off. No more phone charms because the plastic loop broke. If the screen is broken, it would sooner not turn on anymore before the screen would have a crack in it.
#But I guess it would have been hard to have the characters meet on snake or tetris 😅#this whole thing also reminds me of the time my friend told me that one day CDs would be more popular than cassettes#and little me didn't believe her 😂#I don't think my younger cousins even know what a CD player is

what do you think a modern-era thomas would be like? i wonder how different he would be from his canon version with the greater normalization of mental health disorders and everything (and possibly being able to stay in school for longer). i love reading your posts :)
I love reading your posts :)
Modern Thomas {Hewitt} AU Headcanons
I think the most impactful effect of the modern AU would be Thomas' mental and physical condition. He'd most likely get diagnosed quicker and more accurately -
'Mental Retardation' - ASD 1
Would not be diagnosed with 'Mental Deterioration'
Disfigurative/Disfiguring Facial Disease - CLE or Pustular Psoriasis {Possibly both}
Birth Defect {Assumed to be an Incomplete Unilateral Cleft} would stay the same, potentially fixed at birth IF the Hewitt's had the money
Other mental disorders:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Depression
Apraxia of Speech {?}
PTSD
--
With the earlier/more accurate diagnoses, Thomas {if the Hewitt's had the money} would have more treatment/management options. For example:
Therapy: ABA, Speech therapy, general psychology
Medication: Anti-depressants, Anger management, Anti-anxiety, Anti-Psychotics
Honestly..I doubt the Hewitts would approve of either..BUT they'd be more open to it than compared to the canon timeline {due to less societal pressure}
_____
School...oh boy. Depending on what year he'd be born {late 80's - early 90's} his accommodations would change {not too drastically, though}.
The Americans with Disabilities Act {ADA} was signed into law in 1990 by former President George H.W. Bush, meaning Thomas {if he had a 504 or educational plan of some sort} would require accommodations. That being said...he went to school in a small conservative town...in the Deep South...that is heavily religious..
Would he have stayed in school longer? Most likely. Would he have graduated..I don't think so. LISTEN - He'd probably drop out around 14/15 {not that it was legal} - To work at the slaughterhouse. School would've been overwhelming not only from work, but the social aspects as well. He wasn't the best in school..
If he did happen to make it through high school, I doubt he'd go to college - but that's just me.
He would NOT be employed at age 12, as the Texas Child Labor Laws {finalized in 1993} state:
"The Texas Child Labor Laws make sure a child is not working in a job or way that could harm the child's safety, health, or well-being. Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) also has rules to make sure a job does not interfere with a child’s education. It is illegal to employ a child under 14 except under specific circumstances."
_____
Okay!! Now time for more personalized modern AU headcanons 🤗
IF he had a phone {which I don't think he would, unfortunately} he'd like playing random mobile games. I'm talking Tetris-esque and solitaire games {and those of similar nature}.
--
He'd grow his hair out - OP and I have talked about this; He'd grow it out a bit. Maybe not terribly long, but longer than his 2006 length. {I have no idea why this would be modern-related but it popped in my mind}.
--
I don't know if Thomas would be the type to watch TV, honestly. Maybe whatever's on here and there - Eavesdropping on what the family's watching - But nothing too particular.
--
The family would not spend money on mobile phones. I'm sorry, but they wouldn't..they really don't talk to anyone outside of the family, and even then, they'd most likely have a rotary or push-button phone.
--
The Hewitts are poor, okay? Which leads me to believe Thomas would have a CD player as opposed to an online streaming service {for music}. I just envision this post.
--
Possible Music Taste {Open to suggestions}: Type O Negative, The Smashing Pumpkins, Korn {momentarily}, Led Zeppelin, Mortician, Cannibal Corpse, Pantera, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Alice In Chains, Johnny Cash, The Highwaymen, Elvis {momentarily}, Lynyrd Skynyrd {momentarily}, ACDC {momentarily}, Slipknot {momentarily}, hear me out..Radiohead?
--
Thomas would have more variety in his masks - Listen, rural Texas is still rural Texas, but it's not 1960's rural Texas. There'd be more variety in the people there {both from in and out of town}, which leads me to believe his masks would show that.
--
The family would have a bit more variety in their food - Not by much, but still an influential amount. Think about it, Luda's community center/gas station would get some different things {especially in the 2020's}. Vapes, new chip and sweet brands, gum, different soda pop brands, more fast-food-esque stock, but still new stock nonetheless. I'm sure she'd bring some home for the family..even if it's just a bit.
--
I think Thomas would dress relatively the same - Wearing his Sunday clothes to work at the bug-infested bloodfest that is the slaughterhouse {we love a gentleman}.
--
Okay listen, I know this post is about Thomas but I just thought of something: Hoyt would want a phone. NOT because he's social, but because he wants access to certain things..with ease. The Hewitts wouldn't have internet but that doesn't mean Hoyt won't drive out somewhere. He'd have a Facebook account - You can't tell me different.

Things to do on a Sunday afternoon to feel better. Tidying up. I'm not joking or assuming the sexist caricature that makes us look like hysterical cleaners. This story is gender-specific, and I said "tidying up," not cleaning. Spend three or four minutes reading the short text. Trigger Warning: Tibetan mandalas, esotericism, and a kick in the ass for Mari Kondo fans…
The mandalas in your room/Los mandalas de tu habitación...

VS Marie Kondo
Do you think you're too old or busy to spend a free afternoon sorting through your collections? Take a moment to breathe before answering. It's a free afternoon, you don't have to produce anything, and the series you watch on Netflix don't have a taxi meter paying for your ride. Remember when you were a teenager, or even younger, and you had fewer physical items and fewer obligations? I could spend half an afternoon choosing clippings for a homemade CD cover with an MP3 disc. I could dedicate that entire afternoon to the space above the chest of drawers for my socks. That space was my first library, and those three dozen books that barely fit there were my treasure… and my live-action Tetris, too.
I feel silly telling this, but I've learned over the years that it isn't. To begin with, at a young age, that's our meager heritage and an important part of the world around us (still diffuse, with few acquaintances and return home schedules). It represented our tastes, having worked hard to obtain each object in those collections, and these tastes represented ourselves. When you're very young, you know deep down that the order imposed on that small stash is like the constellations of your inner universe.
A while ago, I came across a book by a supposed occultist, more of an outdated hippie who was a fashion victim of traditional cultures, but he wrote very well and made bold analogies between very distant things; it was something too typical of me for me to pay attention to. He said that organizing your records (you know, in times of only physical formats for music) was something very subjective and personal, in the manner I've already paraphrased. Would you arrange them in the order they arrived in your collection to give more use to the less-listened-to ones because they're new, or would you decide to line them up one after the other so you don't forget any to jazz up your space? And if you choose to organize them by musical style, that seems easy enough to say. It's enough to own a Rosalia album (or The Doors if you're older) to drive yourself crazy trying to decide where it fits. Choosing isn't as simple as it seems and is something very personal that can always be revised or completely redone if you change your mind (or your furniture).

What I've said about physical CDs also applies to books. It's just that it can be more complicated with these because the height and thickness vary greatly. And I've even had books with gold lettering, which I mentioned in another post look horrible next to hardcover editions… But what we're talking about applies to collections of anything, even dildos or other sex toys (I suppose). This never-ending activity of giving time and care to your collections was compared by the post-hippie occultist to the laborious task of making mandalas in Tibet. The monks take ages to make them and then undo them. The important thing isn't what the work produces, but the process itself of concentrating on how to represent something internal and even mystical.
Organizing your collections would be like leaving the world behind, like meditation, a way to disconnect and connect with yourself. And you've probably forgotten how good it feels after spending a good amount of time organizing your things to your liking. It may be more mentally impactful to do this with physical objects that need to be fitted or stacked, but it can work with digital files, organizing them into folders just for you. When my mom calls me and I'm pissed off by one of her reproaches, I usually sit on the PC with music playing and update the new subfolders dedicated to having quick-accessible images to answer Asks and more. It works, and today I'm having one of those afternoons to decide to share this.

This is turning out to be longer than I thought (it happens to me a lot), but I said I'd talk about Marie Kondo, and it's important to compare her coaching style with what I've already said. Kondo became very popular a few years ago thanks to an effective social media marketing campaign and a micro-content policy before TikTok and her way of doing things, but it's nothing new. She tells clueless Westerners about the virtues of Eastern minimalism in interior design. You might feel more relaxed in a room with fewer things (not me, my hallway would feel like a liminal space!), or it might be liberating for some to get rid of books you're never going to read again or that you bought but keep putting aside because reading them is an uphill struggle. Kondo argues that having less is more, that you should keep only what is useful and essential. That what you own possesses you, as Brad Pitt said, more handsome than ever in that movie (and two hundred years earlier the Pacific Rim natives saw how modern man lived).

When I talk about today's topic here, someone always came up with the damn Marie Kondo. And look, it doesn't matter if your collection has 30, 300, or 3,000 copies of whatever, that speaks to your collecting, but what I've said applies just the same. For Kondo fans, a book they've already read or an album they've stopped listening to should be treated like a used condom. But I'm not like that. I have duplicate books because I like old and/or unusual editions, and I also keep books I didn't like because they're a gift that reminds me of someone or a special time in my life. Don't let that Kondo come near me. Leave me with my mandala house and my therapy of organizing things so I can get myself organized inside when something stirs my soul. I'm like that, and I warn you that if Kondo opens the underwear drawer, she'll have a fit. We all have things that are very impractical or only for very special moments that rarely come along; that's part of the charm of those things.

oddly specific Chloe Price headcanons (+ some pricefield) because I love her and she’s rotating 24/7 in my mind like she’s in a microwave go
— the kind of person to have tied her shoelaces once when she first got them and then kept them like that and never did it again (her shoes are super loose because of that and she doesn’t give a flying fuck (Max hates it so much))
— super pretentious about music. she doesn’t have a digital playlist until Max makes her one because she ‘loves the real thing better’ (CD’s). also if someone makes her listen to a song they think is cool she’s going to analyze it and say exactly why it is or isn’t good
— extremely talented at basically everything she does (and more often than not on the first try) but never noticed it and just thinks it’s normal. everybody around her can tell but she doesn’t see it and genuinely doesn’t even care
— surprisingly a super good cook. not because of Joyce because she never had time to teach her, it just comes naturally to her
— will watch ANY movie ever. no matter if it’s super boring or super lame or a masterpiece. it’s the same thing with TV shows. basically, she’ll watch anything. and of course, if it’s bad, she can tell and she’ll say it, but it doesn’t keep her from watching it still.
— doesn’t drink coffee, or tea, or sodas - or anything. it’s either water or alcohol for her. (or hot chocolate if Max is in a ‘it’s winter which means blanket + hot chocolate + movie + cuddles’ but it’s the only exception)
— doesn’t get the hype of playing video games unless it’s the old fashioned kind (pokemon or tetris or guitar hero or one of the old mario games) because she gets bored too fast
— doodles 24/7 whenever she’s bored. and on anything too. like her shoes, any piece of paper she can find, people’s hands (especially Max’s)…
— knows way too much about photography, astrology, DnD - basically all of her friends’ hobbies because she listens when they ramble about it. which means if somebody is talking about any of these things and says something wrong, she WILL correct them. out of habit
— unironically likes t-shirts as birthdays or Christmas gifts if they look cool - and if she doesn’t know someone well enough and has to give them a present, she will totally give them a t-shirt
— despises people who chews on gum all day because she despises chewing-gums in the first place. just the chewing, and the smell, and the fact that it just stays in your mouth for half an hour and it’s still there and you’re still chewing the thing doesn’t sit right with her (I’m self projecting)
— insufferable to make plans with. she WILL find a way to be late. she doesn’t even do it on purpose, she just isn’t a stressed person and doesn’t have the urge to go when it’s time, and therefore is always somehow late. even if people tell her to come a hour earlier - she’ll still be late. her friends have started to make plans with both Max and Chloe so they’ll know there’s at least one person who’s normal about timing and will make the both of them arrive in time.
— loves Halloween better than Christmas, for no specific reason except she thinks it’s funnier
— doesn’t reply to “how was your day?” with just ‘good’ or ‘bad’, she tells all the details very passionately, and it’s incredibly endearing (Max loves it and asks her every night)

frewty i need more headcanons from you. literally anything at all. feed me. feed US
UHMMMM...OK. I CAN DO SOME DERWICK ONES I'VE BEEN MEANING TO POST IF THAT SUFFICES.
Derick gets cuddly when drunk. He'd come over to Derwin's and just drink the whole night. Derwin would be reading a book while Derick's clung to his arm about to pass out.
Derick isn't that cuddly when he's sober, so normally Derwin has to initiate. It's kind of like laying on a plank of wood. He's just stiff.
Derwin would lay on his chest- or Derick would be spooning him -and he'd ramble about his interests, or the first thing on his mind. Derick would try his best to listen even if it means he has to force himself to stay awake a little longer, humming in response at the end of Derwin's sentences so he knows he's listening.
They'd hold pinkies when in public because they desperately want to be close but know if they're caught holding hands they'd both get killed.
Derick has pulled out handmade knives/shanks on people to defend Derwin at school. Silently threatening to kill them if they keep it up. It's gotten him suspensions and office trips before, but he doesn't care.
They'd have their own way of communicating nonverbally that only they can understand.
Derwin loves putting together miniatures/models. He tried making one with Derick once, but Derick ended up making a mistake on his and got so frustrated he practically shut down. He didn't finish it because he "only likes big projects and hates small ones".
They'd LOVE firecrackers and bottle rockets. Setting them off every time Derick snatches a handful from the store.
Derwin would like to bake and cook shit for Derick, even though Derick is really picky and doesn't eat much. He'd make Derick a cake for his birthday and would end up eating most of it while Derick only had one, if not half, of a piece.
(Also ties in to the headcanon of Derwin having a sweet tooth and not being able to go to the store while fasting/dieting without crying a little inside because it isn't a cheat day.)
Derwin would come over to watch Derick play POSTAL, and they'd play Doom together. They'd both play a variety of other games too, mostly shooters. Derwin would like Pokemon though. Derick would play POSTAL, Doom, Duke Nukem, Wolfenstein, that type of shit. Derwin would be most of the same, Pokemon, Tetris...He'd like going to arcades too with Derick.
Derwin would always bring a camera with him when they hang out. He'd take pictures and video of literally everything. He's a lot like his mom when it comes to that kind of stuff- wanting to capture every memory possible.
They'd burn CDs together and make mixtapes for each other. They'd play them in Derwin's car and drive around, not really caring where they're going.
They'd go to the mall and just sit around and watch people. Talking about them and laughing to themselves. Whispering and making jokes, coming up with their own dialouge in stupid voices for people in conversation they observe.
They'd like having deep conversations with each other. Sitting together, talking about their views on life and society. Just expressing their feelings and ideas. They always understand each other and find a way to relate, something they've never been able to do with anyone else.
Derwin is constantly worrying about Derick even if he doesn't express it as much as he'd like. He'd make small jokes about being worried about his well-being, to hopefully hide his concern behind humor.
If he isn't with Derick he's constantly worried about him killing himself or hurting himself in some way, and it drives him insane (even if he doesn't know how to properly express it).
IM KIND OF IN A RUSH THIS WAS ALL I COULD PULL FROM MY BRAIN RIGHT NOW, SORRY!! I HOPE THIS IS OK

The source of the video game bleeps and bloops in media
Have you ever wondered what the source of those specific video game bleeps and bloops were from? Odds are if a show or movie had a character play a video game or if a scene takes place in an arcade than it's very likely that it uses the same distinct sound effects that originally were sourced from the Atari VCS (2600) ports of Donkey Kong and Pac-Man. These ports are already historically important with Donkey Kong being one of the few Nintendo games to be released on non-Nintendo hardware and Pac-Man being one of the most anticipated releases for Atari at the time. Today these ports are often mocked for how butchered they are to the arcade originals but at the time these were fine ways to experience these arcade games at home.
So why are the sounds from these arcade ports used so often in media? You can pretty much thank the widespread use of a particular sound effect library and in this case the Series 1000 Sound Effects Library which initially released on tape in 1979 and released on CD in 1983. A good chunk of this library contains the same sounds found on another sound library called the Network Sound Effects Library.
The Series 1000 library however includes audio recordings of gameplay from these Atari games. Ever since then, these sounds have been used for many years and continues to be used to this very day. Before I showcase some examples of media using these sounds I would like to present the recordings from these games. The following is sourced from the Series 1000 Sound Effects Library which feature sound effects from Atari arcade ports.
If you're familiar with these ports than you can make out the specific sound effects present from these recordings. The distinct walking and jumping sounds in Donkey Kong and the dots being eaten and game over sounds from Pac-Man are the more identifiable sounds you hear. With this in mind here are a handful of examples of these sounds being used in media.
(Note: Due to Tumblr restricting one video per post I have compiled all the example clips in a single video so feel free to read below for the specific sound bytes used whilst the video plays.)
Arthur (1996)
The season 1 episode "Arthur Accused!" has Buster investigating an arcade which features sounds from Pac-Man as it eats ghosts and a faint sound of Pac-Man dying from a ghost.
Drake & Josh (2004)
The season 2 episode "The Bet" has Josh playing your typical video game but features several seconds of audio from Donkey Kong. Weirdly music from the Nintendo NES version of Tetris (Type-A specifically) can be heard when Josh is playing on his "handheld" which is clearly a red Game Boy Advance SP.
SpongeBob SquarePants (2007)
The season 5 episode "Atlantis SquarePantis" features a segment of Sandy in a retro inspired environment. The puzzle game segment features various cut up sound bytes from Donkey Kong including jumping over barrels and the walking sounds.
Chowder (2008)
The season 1 episode "Sniffleball" features a brief sound effect from Donkey Kong of Mario jumping over a barrel. (also what is this retro nonsense?)
Ted (2024)
The season 1 episode "Just Say Yes" features Ted and John playing Super Mario Bros. on the NES. For whatever reason no footage of the game is shown and the audio used is from, you guessed it those Atari games. Donkey Kong sound effects can be heard while brief snippets of Pac-Man can also be heard mixed in.
I could keep going but you get the idea. There are plenty of other examples you can find and I highly recommend checking out the Sound Effects Wiki if you're curious to see what other examples are out there. Linked below are the articles for the other sources for these Atari recordings.
Sound Ideas, ARCADE, VIDEO GAME - VIDEO GAME: ELECTRONIC SOUNDS, AMUSEMENT PARK, FAIR 01 Sound Ideas, ARCADE, VIDEO GAME - VIDEO GAME: ELECTRONIC SOUNDS, AMUSEMENT PARK, FAIR 02
I guarantee most folks nowadays aren't even aware that these sounds are from actual Atari games cause out of context they sound like generic bleeps and bloops. That's probably why it's so common to hear these sounds in media as unless you're a nerd like myself this is something you're likely not going to think about and I'd imagine the folks working with audio aren't gonna stop and think about where particular sounds come from outside of the library they're featured in.

PT stans, what is your definition of Stalking? genuinely asking.
Blog, Thetepes, what is your definition of stalking? its a good idea to know what each ''side'' is talking about for things that can have range in definition
(saw your other anon, I know you're referring to me np)
I'm just going to define what I mean by two terms, stalking and also harrassment since thats what all the angry Patricia fans accuse me of
When I say harrassment, I most often mean directly insulting or attacking someone in a way that is meant to be noticed by them. This could be done via reblogs, asks, messages or anons. Now harrassment can also be defaming, insulting or spreading missinformation about someone over posts/asks/anons that arent neccessarily made to be seen.
Now I know that this is where all the Patricia stans will jump out of the woodwork and accuse me of harrassment by definition. However, I am not spreading missinformation. I very clearly go off what Patricia herself says and always provide screenshots. Its not my fault Patricia said being abused and having weird notions is part of being queer/autistic, and me saying that she did with screenshots clearly showing she did isnt harrassment.
Now, stalking in my personal opinion would be commenting on literally everything Patricia says, digging into and dissecting even her smallest comments, keeping track of any of her online activities or changes to her account, that sort of thing. Again, I'm not doing that. I only talk about what she's saying when its a post directly related to the discourse. I dont dissect her posts about tetris to make some grand statement about her as a person. That would be stalker behaviour.
I know this wont get the angry anons to stop yelling "Stalker! Harrassment!", but I felt like anon here deserved a thourough answer, and so that anyone else knows what I consider stalking and harrassment, since these terms are often thrown around in crit spaces.
All of what I just said applies to my coverage of Lily Orchard/CD-Call as well.

Looking for new people to talk to 😔🙏
I'm looking for people who want to be moots/online friends to try and meet some new people 🙏
Currently have no DNIs just don't be weird or creepy.
I'm not necessarily looking for anyone with particular interests since I wanna be exposed to some new things, but here's some things that I'm interested in or that are related to me so you can see if anything peaks your interest.
I'm a big music lover. I mainly like alternative music, lot's of punk music, but I listen to other genres too. Some specific bands/artists I like are the Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Moon Walker, Molchat Doma, Björk, Jazmin Bean, Mindless Self Indulgence (not as much anymore), Uncle Outrage, Insane Clown Posse, KMFDM, And One, and Funker Vogt. I'm also interested in different ways to listen to music. I'm working on building a CD and cassette tape collection and I've been playing around with the iPod classic recently.
I'm interested in fashion and personal style, especially alternative fashion. I don't have a lot of money so I don't really look fashionable, but I've been wanting to get more into it. I love seeing what other people wear, especially if they have a unique style. I'm a big believer in what someone wears can tell you a lot about them because for a lot of people fashion is a big way they express themselves, and I've always been interested in that.
I'm trans ftm and pansexual so I'm definitely down to meet other people in the LGBT community. I would say that I'm open to most identities, although I might not completely understand them, but that's also why I'm trying to meet new people, to be exposed to different things. Just don't be like a MAP or something.
I also have an interest in leftist politics, so if you're someone who likes to talk about leftist politics and discuss those kinds of ideas feel free to talk about it just be civil and open-minded. I'd say I'm open to any good faith discussion just don't be hateful, MAGA, neo-Nazi, terf (or rather, the term I like more, fart 🤭, feminist appropriating radical transphobe) or anything like that.
I like tech, specifically unique tech and for that reason I'm usually interested in older stuff. Some of my favorite tech is probably from the 90s, 2000s and early 2010s because that's around the time when the more colorful and unique tech was popular.
On that note I'm also into 2000s and 2010's revival stuff. I like some of the aesthetics from that era, specifically the more alternative side. It's also a bit nostalgic because a lot of it is stuff I remember from my childhood.
I like horror movies, although I haven't watched any in a while, so if you have any good recommendation feel free to yap about them. I got pretty into the Purge series around Halloween last year and I used to be into Saw when I was younger, and I'm hoping to find more horror movies or TV series to watch.
On the topic of TV, some shows I've liked are Blood-C, Serial Experiments Lain, Krapopolis, Stranger Things, Abandoned and Dark Tourism. There's probably more, but I don't watch TV that much so I'm probably forgetting them.
I also play a lot of video games. Some of my favorites are Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption 2, Sea of Theives, Terraria, Stardew Valley, Sims 4, Hogwarts Legacy, Minecraft, Fortnite and No Man's Sky. I've also been wanting to play more of the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series as well as Days Gone. I used to be a huge Elder Scrolls fan back when I was, like, 12, and then when I was 14 I got really into Fortnite, so those are always fun. (And when I was 12 I'm talking like, chronic Skyrim player. I was getting Tetris syndrome from how much Skyrim I was playing. Fun times.)
I'm gonna stop here before I go on and on and on. If any of this interests you definitely drop a comment or a DM. Also I'm 17 (soon to be 18) so if we're gonna talk it's probably better if your around my age so like 16 - 19 preferred, but I also probably won't shun you if you're a little outside of that gap just don't be waaaaay younger or waaaaay older (like min 14, max 20).
