DAVAO CITY – As a preventive measure against the African Swine Fever (ASF), Mati City in Davao Oriental is temporarily banning the entry of swine, pork, pork-related products, and pork by-products. In a statement released on Friday, the local government said the ban is in response to a Department of Agriculture regional memorandum requesting local government units (LGUs) for the temporary ban of swine and pork products from Luzon and other ASF-affected areas. The DA also called for the prohibition of swill feeding or the feeding of food scraps to swine as one measure to prevent the spread of ASF. Mati City Mayor Michelle Rabat said she has already directed the offices of the City Veterinarian Service, the City Agriculture, and the City Slaughterhouse to strictly enforce the order from the Regional Advisory Committee for Animal Disease Control and Emergency 11 (RAC-ADCE 11). As early as August 20, Rabat said City Veterinary Services Office (CVSO) head, Dr. Marites Linsag-Erispe,  coordinated with the local quarantine unit and the Philippine National Police for the strict implementation of quarantine measures. Before the order of banning the meat products, she said the city also strengthened the Task Force Bantay Karne (TFBK), which screened the entry of fresh meat products passing through designated checkpoints. The CVSO has also conducted inspections on backyard piggeries in various barangays as a proactive measure to prevent the entry of ASF in the city. In coordination with the Department of Agriculture-Regional Animal Disease Diagnostics Laboratory, the CVSO also conducted blood collection of swine and goat for disease surveillance. On September 25, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio also ordered the ban of all live pigs and pork products from Luzon and other areas affected by the said disease. The temporary ban applies to all live pigs, pork and pork-related products and by-products, whether fresh, frozen, processed or cooked, including but not limited to frozen boar semen, from the entire island of Luzon and the other ASF-affected areas.
