Gonna be honest one of the fanon things that irks me a bit is when people are like "Raph can't go into his shell at all", as in, he isn't physically capable of it.

Yes he doesn't do it in the show, but if he can't do it then why was shell bowling even a thing in the Lair Games? Why would their competition have an event about them going into their shells to bowl if Raph can't do that? I genuinely don't think they'd create an event that one of them physically cannot compete in, that goes against the whole premise of the Lair Games.

Idk it's just one of those things that's fine as a headcanon, but it bothers me when it gets treated as canon.

so the main thing i remember is that it's mainly donnie and mikey angst

so it started out with donatello being replaced by someone else for years and the other turtles had no idea. then it was him replacing himself and then it was leo instead and a few other different versions that i plot holed away. i ended up with raph, leo AND donnie being replaced by robots BY the real donnie (who had died along with the other two) for years and mikey had no idea. then i was like, hm another plot hole, robots dont bleed. and THATS where it all came together.... (evil hand mushing)

boom, bop, bam: they're from another timeline/multiverse

and then the angst started. (side note: i personally dont think i have a good handle on their characters/relationships with each other. i need to rewatch the show and watch the other ones tbh, please take this with the finest grain of salt you can find)

scene 1: mikey finds out

right now, it's just him and donatello in the lair, the other two are out or something. he overhears don talking about "day 1,100, didn't think we'd make it this far without michaelangelo finding out, etc."

"who are you? where are my brothers? what's going on?"

"get away from me. don't touch me"

"don't call me that, you don't get to call me that. not mikey, not mike, or mikester or angelo or anything, none of it!"

he's freaking out. 3 years? his brothers aren't even his brothers? initially he's flipping his shit, trying to get away from donnie(?). for all he knows they could be robots, shapeshifters, anything.

scene 2: leo finds mikey (on a rooftop)

"hey bud"

"GET AWAY FROM ME" he's got his kusari-fundō spinning, pointed at leo(?)

leo(?) raises his hands "okay! okay! it's okay dude, i'm not gonna hurt you i promise", he reaches to lift his swords out and throw them to the side.

michaelangelo, breathing so heavily, lowers his weapon yet still spinning it. he's leaning side to side, lightly pacing but never turning his back to his brother(?)

"listen, uh. buddy, just come back home and we can talk about this. we'll explain-"

"no! i'm not going anywhere with you"

"do you really think we would wait this long to do something to you if we were going to?"

that stumped him. would they play the long game? tello would. but the others wouldn't and honestly, donnie would get bored eventually anyway.. maybe he should hear them out.

scene 3: the explanation

they all sit down together and donnie explains what happened.

at first, he tells mikey the truth and leo and raph immediately berate him for not going through with their inital plan to lie so that mike doesn't flip again. buuuut then I thought it'd be angstier to go through with the inital plan 🫢

Donatello explains:

"So say," he draws two lines on a hologram, one purple, one orange. he points to the orange one, "this is your timeline and this is ours," pointing to the purple line

"In our world, you died. You weren't strong enough, too young maybe, to handle the ooze. As time went by things were normal for us, then out of nowhere a portal brought us to your timeline."

(context dump: the three completely grew up without him, mike has no memories of the portal why? idk yet...trauma response probably..)

L: "We were all confused at first but eventually we figured out that you had brought us here because your us's were gone."

R: "So we figured out the routine, the rhythm. Played the parts that you expected."

M: "So this is...my fault? I took you from your home and you, you just let it happen?!"

D: "I obviously have been trying to figure out a way back but alas, even the most genius of geniuses have trouble with multi-versal travel.

scene 4: emotional damage

(an: i know, i didn't write much here. i got a little lazy, its literally just the climax)

big crazy scene, like wild colours (lots of orange and yellow) and destruction and stuff like the movie type shi.

2012 & 2018 Michelangelo (thats I hard name to spell good lord. . .) my own turtle design! (Kinda)

The Mikey mix~

another run down, but this time it’s different!

In the 2018 series the boys are all different types of turtles, Leo is a Red-eard Slider, Raph is a Alligator-Snapping turtle, Donnie is a Soft shell turtle (shudders) and Mikey is a simple box turtle, in the 2012 series Donnie says that he suspects their Common-Box turtles and/or Dimond-Back Terrapins.

So they’re all different turtle Mixes, Mikey’s pretty normal compared to his brothers (well thats not something you hear every day. . .) because of this I decided to add the Yellow-Bellied slider given that the 2012 Mikey is a much lighter color compared to his brothers which is neat, so he’s Dimond back terrapin/Box-Turtle & Yellow-belly slider

his Yellow-Slider is most visible on his shell/plastron and in his light skin tone

I gave His plastron a yellow tint to show it. the mixed shell pattern is supposed to be the Dimond-Back terrapin and Box-Turtle

other then that there's really not much to say for him regarding turtle mixes, so I’ll just talk about the other details on him!

Mikey’s covered in paint, a detail that two people I showed this to seemed to love and I do to! I figured Mikey would have fun painting his shell and I even added (or wanted to add) the little detail that he paints a lightning bolt on his plastron to match Raph, (which I added in an additional thing)

But it was also a little difficult. I’m mostly using the 2012 color palette, so when I use the paint colors from 2018 I had to make sure colors didn’t clash to much which is way I didn’t add more colors because they just didn’t work (I had that same problem with Raph and his mask&/red-ear-marks) + I’m not the most creative when it comes to sparatic details, tho I do think it’s works and looks quite nice! he also has paint on his equipment, which Splinter probably got mad about it on his nunchucks.

when adding on his specks/freckles I had a moment thinking is this to much? But then I got reassurance from someone that they liked it so, I do think his cheek freckles get lost but he makes up for it!

I’d also just like to point out that I hadn’t drawn Mikey before this, seriously the only I did of Mikey before this was the first turtles thing a draw a bit back it was a little odd but not as bad as the story I have for Donnie. . .thats for another time tho. . . . I didn’t really have much problem with Mikey, the only thing close to it would be the feet and nunchucks which I wasn’t originally gonna add but put in anyway because it looked weird without them (I had to do the same with Donnie’s staff)

Also I just wanna say. The reason this took so long was because I just hadn’t got around to writing the actual post sorry! . also I have the base line of Donnie and have had it for a bit I just need to finish him which shouldn’t take long it’s just if I feel like doing the rest of Donnie I feel so bad about it!

Why is Donnie keeping it secret? And how? And why does looking normal have consequences for him, and what are those consequences? Have you thought about what double-mutated him/how that went down? How long would it take the brothers to notice the changes?? And what tips each of them off, if that's not spoilers??

Why is he keeping it secret?

First of all, the sheer level of embarrassment hed have admitting that HE, Donatello Hamato of all turtles wasnt paying attention to his surroundings? Tell them about that?? Absolutely not.

He would get laughed at to the moon and back, and have to face Raphs disappointed and disapproving face and Leos teasing and tragic bird jokes (before AND after his bros actually tried helping him)

Secondly, the guilt and fear. The anxiety and worry and panic, Donnie ends up spiraling and shutting down on himself and chickening out of telling his family, because hiding it feels like the much easier option. The emotional response he has to getting double mutated shuts down his wonderful intellect and clouds his judgement from making a clear headed decision 😔 Why tell them if he doesnt really need to, hmmm?

Later on when hes had time to process it and get used to it, theres allot of "i proooobably should have told them, but its dumb to tell them NOW because so much time has passed since then, and theyll start asking why i didnt say anything earlier" (hes not introspective enough to know WHY he didnt tell them, so he also wants to avoid that question because he has NO idea how to answer that). The longer he waits to tell them and keeping it secret, the more his thoughts twist and spiral with "what ifs", what if hes like this forever? What if his family doesnt accept the changes? What if they look at him and treat him differently? Already so much has changed, he doesnt WANT more changes in his life, so hes keeping a desperate death grip on anything normal from before the second mutation happened.

He kinda just digs his own grave of "its too late to tell them now so whats the point? Plus i fixed it! Mostly- they dont need to know"

How is he keeping his second mutation secret?

Cloaking brooch :) in this AU he finds out about them before the bug busters episode! Hed been down to the HC a couple times soon after they discovered it, fixing the portal gate key was a little tricky but he managed to get it functioning again. After exploring he learned about cloaking brooches and found out about the HC library.

You think he wouldnt have found a way to secretly swipe one of those cloaking brooches as soon as he found out about them? He yoinked that purple crystal, he yoinked a brooch~ although the one he has isnt top of the line and has some drawbacks.

The consequences of staying cloaked for too long?

Its a sensory nightmare if hes been cloaked for too long. Think about it, having whole entire wings and a tail, cloaked long-term? After a while hes going to start aching in places he cant see, and the disembodied weight of having mystically hidden limbs will slowly get heavier and harder to ignore the longer the cloaking brooch is being used to hide them.

It probably feels allot like being hunched over at a desk or table for too long, but no matter how he stretches he cant alleviate the ache unless he turns the cloaking brooch off. But doing that is incredibly risky when you have 3 nosy brothers, and a ninja rat dad who can effortlessly sneak up on you.

Donnie gets irritable way faster now because of the consistent background ache he feels when the brooch is active for far too long, and its mission impossible trying to sleep wearing it for more than a few days at a time.

He also has to make the brooch look inconspicuous/hide it when he wears it. Where can he wear it where his brothers (specifically Leo) wont notice and try to yoink it?

What happened for him to double mutate?

Im cooking a sketchy comic about it thats going to be more informative, also because a visual tale scratches that itch in my brain :) Ill probably add some written scenes to, since i feel like spicing things up and switching between different ways to tell a story.

How long till the bros notice?

Itll probably take different times for each brother to start noticing… subtle differences though. But for anyone of them to actually find out what happened to Donnie? Id assume one at a time, hed blackmail them into keeping it secret and to not tell the others, Raph would probably be the last to find out xD

What tips each of them off?

Raph just thinks of Donnies antics as middle child nonsense at first "The twins are teaming up with their insomnia at night again arnt they, thats why Donnie looks like he hasnt been getting much sleep!". Although he probably stumbles across Donnie early one morning, and in that quiet moment of observation he notices that his brother has been looking off for a bit now… hmmm, maybe he should approach him with a fresh cup of coffee just the way he likes it and see if he opens up to him a little.

Leo clocks it pretty early on that something is definitely up with his brother, hes noticed a few odd things happening and changes in how his brother has been acting, but he doesnt say anything about it. He probably brushes the signs off for a while, until they keep showing up and then he starts getting curious and worried about whats not being said. He does some snooping, some prying, some deep hidden questions layered under the jokes and sarcasm to see if he can get anything out of Donnie. Might just burst into his lab and start pestering him to see if when he snaps at him to leave he gives anything away. Hes the one who would speak up and say "Hey, is it just me or has anyone noticed that Donnie's been acting weirder than usual?".

Mikey notices the change in what Donnie feels like eating xD he also definitely notices his brothers shift in mood, not immediately, but when he does notice its impossible for him to ignore. He tries approaching Donnie a few times to try and figure out the specifics and cause and effect of whats going on with him emotionally, but gets lost and frustrated when his guesses dont hold any water. Mikey gets pretty annoyed with himself when he cant figure out how to help Donnie with whatever is clearly eating on his mind.

idk i think the off characterisation was because of the shredder. after the shredder it became clear that they couldnt just be kids fooling around and getting into insanely stupid situations anymore and thats why donnie was more serious? keep in mind its clear that raph and leos arguing has been going on for a while at that point so ig they were all fed up with leos bs (said with much love) but other than that idk?? i feel like raph really got into the "we cant just be kids anymore" with them

i think that's just a way of connecting to the show to the movie, im not sure if that was the intent-- the way i see the movie personally was like. it's meant to be removed from the show a little bit, because iirc it was somewhat intended to be an introduction to rottmnt for older tmnt fans? it's why draxum isnt there, or mayhem, and there's no mention of the hidden city and etc. it might even explain the choice to include specifically casey jr in the way they did. really they go out of their way not to mention things that happened in the show. they don't even call their powers ninpo iirc. i do love the karai parallels with the pd scene dont get me wrong, but they're easy to miss!

^^^ i think this applies to a lot of characterization choices as well, especially for leo. i think he's the most off out of the four because like, while he can be a brat going to that extent, with the world on the line, doesn't feel,,, idk fitting? it's definitely hammed up for the sake of drama and it does feel like regression, but i think that's just because they needed an open-and-shut arc for him. if the movie was more connected to the show and was banking on only rise fans seeing it, i think it would have been written WAY differently, for raph and leo especially.

TMNT Hottake: TOTTMNT was disappointing (in my opinion)

i know i know!! i shouldn’t be putting down the new gen of turtles bc thats what every past gen fandom does to every single new iteration BUT this is my blog and i do what i want. Also, thisnis my OPINION feel free to disagree or debate.

SO MUCH wasted potential

GUYS the amount of openings the MM movie left for the series to branch off of was crazy. The Shredder and Cynthia Utrom and her extremely likely connection to the Kraang the were obviously plot points the writers were saving for the second movie and the turtles also couldn’t have drastic character development because of that, but still. The first movie left off on the turtle’s going to high school and regular kids, which was a concept that hadn’t been explored before in the franchise. And the show just. Didn’t. They didn’t go into their school life beyond passing comments about homework and wrestling. We could have gotten a silly shenanigan filled episode of the turtles trying to find after school jobs or clubs or even how they dealt with their newfound fame. That would have been epic.

2. Lack of story content

Really, we only got two complete stories from the series. part one with bishop and then part two with goldfin and even then neither villain really stuck out to me. Bishop had that inciting moment that tied her into the first movie with her mechazoid getting crushed by the superfly mutant. But then her ‘revenge plan’ still felt shoehorned in like they were trying to make a morally complex villain and failed. Her side backstory with her sister just fell flat. i’m sorry, I love sweet sibling bonds, but we just weren’t given enough information or time about Elena for me to personally care about her. Then at the end when bishop turned herself in and then immediately relapsed into villainous territory, I was like “wow, i can’t wait to see her descent into madness as the second half of the series progresses!” but then she was just pushed to the side COMPLETELY in order to start the goldfin plot line. Where Bishop was a fresh take on a classic character, Goldfin and the East River Three were completely new characters created for TOTTMNT. i can kinda see what they were going for by starting off with whats familiar to fans and then branching out into more creative territory, but the shift between stories was so jarring, it felt loke i had just started a whole new series entirely- though, now that i’m typing this out, that also could have been the feeling the writers were going for since part one was told through Leo’s point of view and part two was told through Raph’s. 3. Personal gripes, aka my fave characters were not there

CASEY!! CASEY MY PRECIOUS LITTLE BOY WHERE WERE YOU?!! Casey was never named as a character in the show, but i will bet my bottom dollar that they were one of the unnamed purple dragons. I have theories that either the boomerang dragon was casey (really really hoping he was. he was my favorite dragon outside of Hun and Angel) or the knife-stick hockey girl was Casey (girl casey truther fr) and i really hope the bucket hat dragon is Keno bc that man NEEEDS to make a comeback. Theres really not much to say about this reason. MONA ALSO WASNT THERE. ik it would’ve been hard to do a space arc in the very limited number of episodes, but it would’ve made my 2012 and 1987 loving heart to see her just make some kind of appearance.

after the Apritello disaster of 2012, i was waiting with bated breath to see how they would handle the Leopril romance introduced in MM and i was pleasantly surprised. It felt so much more genuine and like a realt teen crush. Hes so much more chill about it than Donnie ever was, but he is still clearly very in love and its all so sweet to watch.

2. The ANIMATION

HOLY SHIT WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN?? it was nothing short of STELLAR- the subtle style changes as the turtles perspectives shifted?? UGHHH!!! i wanted to consume my phone. THE FIGHT WITH GOLDFIN???!! JAW!! ON THE FLOOR!!!

So Slash has taken the mentality of pets and responsible pet ownership with him into his sentient life? If Raph is a pet to him, what does he view, say, Casey? As a stray? A competitor?

i'm honestly not nearly as invested in this pet-mentality angle as a lot of readers seem to be. slash doesn't think of anyone as a pet or as his pet beyond like, maybe in a heavily metaphorical sense. if anything thats a mentality other ppl project onto him which he finds kind of baffling (as you'll kind of see later on. idk there's like 1 line of dialog that pertains to this and leo in particular is really stuck on the “oh he’s a gross weird pet” thing).

sure he gets a lot of his ideas of affection from his former life as a pet, (love as providing for someone and taking care of them, captivity as "not really that bad" if its by someone who loves you) because he doesnt have much else to go off of. but he isn't thinking things like "ok now its MY turn to be the owner and everyone else is a pet or a wild animal" or smth. he knows that what he's doing is different. he knows kidnapping a person is not even remotely the same as keeping a pet, he just thinks he's justified in doing it.

which is a long way to say: he thinks of Casey as a friend of raphs, and a potential ally who just doesn't understand (yet) how dire the situation is

The opening for the 2012!jonatello fic thats been sitting around since april that i need to finish

Casey decided he no longer liked Canada. From this moment onwards Canada was his worst enemy, the bane of his existence. A shame, truly, that the home of hockey would reject him so. Casey was currently stuck in knee deep mud, lost in the Canadian wilderness.

"Now i can forgive a lot of things, but the bacon! The bacon is toeing the line!" Casey yanked on his boot again, "But this, this takes the cake!" His boot refused to budge. "Stuck in the middle of butt-fuck nowhere, being eaten alive by flies, swimming in my own sweat because its so humid, and i THOUGHT Canada was supposed to be cold by the way-" Casey tried yanking on his other foot, "stuck in some swamp-ass smelling mud, miles away from civilization, where- fuck!" Casey's foot slid out of his boot, which was still securely in the mud. Casey shoved his foot back in before he lost his balance. Then he screamed in anguish up at the treetops. Casey took a deep breath and got back to work.

"'Oh, Casey? Would you go check on Donnie? He refuses to come home.' 'Sure thing, Leo! Ive been looking for a excuse to visit Canada anyways.' Famous last words right there, Casey. Should've sent April, he's more likely to do what she asks anyways." Leo had sent him and his brothers out on solo missions, a few months living underground in a foreign country. Donnie was sent to the Canadian wilderness to lessen his reliance on technology. Leo sent himself to Costa Rica for leadership, Raph to India to find inner peace or something, and Mikey to Australia to learn caution. That last one backfired. Mikey came home with four illegal pets and hasnt dropped the accent he picked up. And Casey still didnt understand how Leo was suppose to learn leadership by being alone. At least Raph's worked out, having mellowed out a lot. But theyd all come home, some later than others, but they still made it. Donnie on the other hand still hasnt come home. Its coming up on two years now since he left. He still sends regular check-ins, so they know he's alive.

"Success!" Casey freed one boot from its muddy prison. "Take that Canada!"
