Welcome to your life - Pt 1:
Everybody Wants To Rule THEIR World Ch 8:
Summary:
"You need only close your eyes to it and be happy and safe with us."
The Keeper (player) has already secured the repository and Sebastian's loyalty, emboldening his descent into darkness. Now, they just need to win over Ominis, cure Anne, and create a domain to call their own.
And not necessarily in that order.
The Keeper's tale, a post-game story of a morally-grey, pragmatic, Chaotic Neutral, non-binary, muggleborn, orphan player character, so burned by 1800s orphanages, that they became a power hoarder who demands more payment for quests, burns paintings but doesn't want to rule the world, just their own territory and the two boys who'd caught their eye.
Warnings: Sebastian x MC x Ominis! Spoilers! Dark content! Slow-burn canon-compilant corruption! Fucked up 1800s orphanages! MC has no love for Anne or Solomon! Dubious happy ending (it's happy for MC, Seb and Ominis at least)
You can also read on AO3! (chapter specific warnings below)
Notes:
Warnings: Character analysis? A bit of emotional manipulation.
The fact that Sebastian specifies that Ominis couldn't be cured of his blindness, leads me to believe that there aren't many blind people in the Wizarding world because blindness is usually curable. Or, you know, JK just forgot blind people existed.
Also, I thought the next sex scene I wrote would be one with assigned sex but my brain decided to insist that the next one also be gender neutral and decided to write it out long before the story reaches that point, why do I make life harder on myself- So, er, look forward to that when it comes, I suppose x'D
"What are the ingredients to the polyjuice potion?" Ominis asked, fingers pressed against his textbook.
"A bit of the person you're changing into, lacewing flies, leeches⊠knotgrass⊠er, powdered bicorn⊠horn! Boomslang skin, I think." Sebastian scrunched up his face, counting off his fingers. "Blast it, I think I'm missing one!"
Frustrated noises filled the Undercroft for several moments, before Sebastianâs face lit up hopefully. âLacewing flies!â
âNope, you've already said that.â Ominis chuckled.
âMerlin-â Sebastian groaned.
"Give up?" Ominis smiled wryly.
Sebastian frowned for a solid minute. "Urgh, fine, what'd I miss?"
"The boomslang skin needs to be shredded and you missed fluxweed, which needs to be picked on a full moon." Ominis recited.
"Confound it! I always forget the fluxweed." Sebastian groaned again and slammed his head down onto the cover of his textbook.
"Really? I always remember that one because it's so bloody specific, it's the powdered bicorn horn I'm always forgetting." The Keeper sighed as they frowned at their own notes. What the hell had they been trying to write there?
"Maybe if you actually took notes, it would help you remember the ingredients." Ominis poked Sebastian in the arm.
"At least you don't have to worry about your theory paper, you always seem to remember the ingredients." Sebastian replied, his words muffled against the book.
"That's because I have to, Merlin knows my practical potion is going to be a disaster." Ominis sighed, rubbing a hand over his face.
"I still think it's ridiculous that you don't get any aids for practical potions." The Keeper clicked their tongue in annoyance. "How do they expect you to be able to tell what colour the potion has become, so you know when to take the next step?"
"They probably didn't think that far. Incurable blindness is an extremely rare condition in the Wizarding world, I'm just glad someone bothered to invent a spell that translates written words into magically textured braille." Ominis gave a bitter smile as he leaned against his hand, elbow propped up against the table.
"I swear, the magical government is even more useless than the muggle's, and that's saying something." The Keeper grimaced, giving up on deciphering their own writing and pulling out their field guide instead.
"When has any authority figure been of any use besides being obstructive and obnoxious?" Sebastian peeled his face off the cover and scoffed.
"Fair point." The Keeper grinned, reaching across the table to ruffle Sebastian's hair.
"Well, I had hoped to get a Potions NEWT⊠but I don't think I'll be able to get an Exceeds Expectations to qualify." Ominis sighed, slumping all the way down to lie across his open textbook.
"Well⊠if the system has failed, I don't see why we should abide by it." The Keeper smirked, their eyes meeting Sebastian's, pleased at the answering calculative gleam in his eyes.
Ominis hummed questioningly and the two of them chuckled, silently agreeing to come up with a way to get Ominis his well-deserved Potions OWL. They'd clue Ominis in when they had a plan.
"That reminds me, do the two of you have any plans for the summer break?" The Keeper asked, tapping the feather end of their quill against their chin.
"Well, I usually spend my breaks at Feldcroft with SebastianâŠ" Ominis trailed off, the unspoken 'and Anne' hanging uncomfortably in the air.
Sebastian grimaced and nodded. "It'll be the two of us then, I suppose."
The Keeper eyed him with concern, this had bad idea written all over it. They werenât convinced that Sebastian's mental state was stable enough to spend two months in a house with so many, now traumatic, memories.
"What were you planning to do?" Ominis asked the Keeper.
Now, it was the Keeper's turn grimace. "Technically, I'm supposed to go back to the orphanage."
"No."
"Absolutely not."
The Keeper chuckled at the immediate responses. How sweet of the two. "Relax, I said technically, because the orphanage already kicked me out to the workhouses at fourteen, and I was only stuck there because I needed food and lodging."
The Keeper smirked. "I've been accumulating as much money as I can over the year, running errands and taking requests. I won't be able to use magic but at least in the muggle world I'm essentially independent."
Ominis sighed in relief while Sebastian's face lit up in a brilliant smile. "Which means you can stay with us!"
"Yes, assuming the two of you are amenable to the idea." The Keeper chuckled knowingly.
Ominis rolled his eyes while Sebastian practically dragged the Keeper by their robes across the desk between them to press their lips together.
"Good afternoon, Professor Sharp." The Keeper greeted as they stepped into the potions teacher's office, nodding politely.
"Good afternoon, have a seat." The professor replied as he tugged a sheet of paper from his file, placing it on the desk between them as they sat down.
"Congratulations on completing your OWLs, here are your results. I must say that you have performed surprisingly well, all things considered." The stern man nodded approvingly.
"Thank you, Professor." The Keeper smiled as they examined their results.
"Have you put some thought into the direction you would like to take after graduation?" The Professor asked, sounding slightly tired of repeating this question, as he no doubt had since breakfast.
"I have. I was hoping to go into spell crafting and similar veins of research." The Keeper replied, remaining purposefully vague on their goals.
From the way the ex-auror's eyes narrowed, he'd noticed. "Hm, I see. What subjects are you interested in pursuing a NEWTs certificate for?"
Pleased that the professor had decided not to pry, they scanned their results again. It would be best to go for the most useful subjects for their future experimentations, they'd have to learn more specialised topics on their own.
Arithmancy and Transfiguration were definitely important since they'd be doing massive amounts of calculations to build their fortress, and Transfiguration would help with making tools at least, though they'd avoid using magic for anything important. The last thing they needed was for the Transfiguration of structural supports to appear to have gone right, when in actuality, the internals were messed up, and its stability was compromised.
Defence would be useful since Sebastian was interested in Dark Magic. Potions and Herbology were important for self-sustainability. While Ancient Studies and Ancient rune reading was a basic necessity for their fields of research.
They'd love to take Care of Magical Creatures but sadly they doubted they'd have time. Seven NEWTs was already a ridiculously ambitious goal.
"I should like to take Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Herbology, Arithmancy and Study of Ancient Runes. I would also like to take Ancient Studies if it is available." The Keeper replied with a firm nod.
"Hm, I've had several students express interest in Alchemy and Ancient Studies this year, so both will likely be available. Seven NEWTs will be quite the challenge but I believe that with the effort you have invested into your OWLs, you will succeed. I wish you all the best in your studies." Professor Sharp gave them a rare smile.
"Thank you, Professor, I shall do my best not to disappoint." The Keeper bowed their head once more, moving to stand.
âNot so fast.â Professor Sharpâs voice stopped them, and the Keeper tipped their head to the side questioningly. âThere is the matter of your residence during the summer break.â
They frowned as he continued. âIt has come to my attention that you currently do not have a guardian.â
The Keeper nodded. âThe orphanage has released me from their custody, I assumed then that I would be considered independent, like I would in the muggle world.â
âNot quite, the wizarding world is a little less careless with children. As a student without a guardian, such a duty falls to your head of house, in other words, me.â The professor didnât seem too pleased about this, if his stiff expression was any indication. âDo you have anyone whom you would like to spend your summer break with?â
The Keeper nodded. âI was planning to stay with Sebastian Sallow till next term.â
Professor Sharp nodded, and they wondered if they were imagining the relief in his eyes. âI see, then I will need his uncle to sign a form agreeing to accept temporary guardianship of you during the school break.â
The Keeper kept their face carefully blank as they nodded. This could pose a problem⊠though, perhaps⊠hm, theyâd have to catch Sebastian to speak about this before he took his turn speaking with their head of house.
âI will speak with Mr. Sallow about this later, for now, you may go.â
"I'm surprised I got an Outstanding in History of Magic, I know Binns is the cure to insomnia but surely it's not hard to read the textbooks." Sebastian shook his head as the Keeper made their way to the Slytherin dinner table.
"Most people don't inhale books the way you do, Sebastian." Ominis rolled his eyes.
"Maybe they should, it'd probably make your average human a smidgen more tolerable to interact with." The Keeper drawled as they took a seat beside Ominis.
"Average human, does that include us?" Ominis asked airily.
âThereâs nothing average about either of you.â The Keeper huffed lightly, unobtrusively brushing their fingers along the back of Ominis' hand, making him shiver.
âTrue.â Sebastian smirked from across the table as he popped a carrot into his mouth, watching in amusement as Ominis cleared his throat and collected himself.
"I still can't believe I scraped an Exceeds Expectations in Potions." Ominis smiled. "Sticking a small mirror on the ceiling and using hand signs that I could see with my wand, I must say, that was rather brilliant."
"Why thank you, I'm quite pleased with the results myself." The Keeper allowed their elbow to rest on the table with a satisfied curl to their lips.
"Well, I'm very grateful to the two of you for helping me, it mustn't have been easy keeping track of my potion along with both your own." An absolutely radiant smile spread across Ominis face.
The Keeper immediately felt the itch to obliviate anyone nearby who might have seen it. Such a sight was for their eyes only, and from the look on Sebastianâs face, he seemed to agree with that sentiment.
"So, how'd your talk with Sharp go?" Ominis asked, and the Keeper shook themselves from their reverie, beginning to fill their plate from the dishes on the table.
"Pretty well, I managed to score high enough to take all seven." They replied with some smugness.
"Show off." Sebastian snorted in amusement, though he couldnât quite conceal how proud he was to have such an exceptional individual for a partner.
"Are you sure about taking so many NEWTs, especially considering our⊠side projects?" Ominis asked worriedly, clearly concerned for their health.
The Keeper shook their head. "I'll be fine Ominis, now, how did the two of you fare?"
Ominis still looked concerned, but relented. "I'll be taking Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, Herbology, and Defence Against the Dark Arts."
"Interested in becoming a healer?" The Keeper asked curiously, and Ominis' cheeks coloured ever so slightly as he nodded with a dreamy smile, Sebastian grinning fondly at the expression.
"It suits you, I'm sure you'll make a wonderful healer." The Keeper nodded approvingly, pleased at the way Ominis practically glowed with happiness in response. It would be incredibly useful to have a healer with them. "And you Sebastian?"
"I'm going for Ancient Studies, Alchemy, Potions, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Study of Ancient Runes and Arithmancy." Sebastian replied smoothly.
"Six, are you sure about taking so many NEWTs?" The Keeper echoed teasingly.
"Ha ha, one of these days you're going to regret underestimating me so consistently." Sebastian tipped his chin up in mock indignation.
The Keeper laughed. "I look forward to that day."
The Keeper waved their wand, carefully guiding a small trailing ball of smoky red and black energy into the jar they were holding, ignoring the sound of the Undercroft's gates rising.
"What are you doing?" Ominis' curious voice drifted to their ears.
"Just bringing some of the Pain energy from the Repository with us." The Keeper replied, sealing the bulb of energy in the bottle and placing it in the open trunk beside them, before removing another empty jar and beginning to fill that one as well.
"What for?" Sebastian's voice joined his as the two boys stood behind the Keeper, the brunet watching the angry-looking energy warily.
"While this energy seems to have adverse⊠corrupting effects on others, or at least goblins, Isidora and myself are able to use its energy to enhance our magic." The Keeper explained tucking away the filled jar and closing their trunk.
"You've been using it." Sebastian stated rather than asked.
"I'm not sure that sounds safe, how can you be sure it doesn't corrupt you?" Ominis asked worriedly.
"That is why neither of you are to consume it. I've only seen that it didn't harm Isidora, so I can only say for certain that those with Ancient magic can absorb it safely. Ranrok became consumed by this and turned into a monster." The Keeper turned to face the boys, their eyes serious. "I will not risk either of you."
"Do you understand?" The Keeper demanded, taking Ominis' hand in one hand and Sebastian's in another.
"Surely you needn't take such a dangerous thing either!" Ominis exclaimed, gripping their hand tightly.
"We can always test it o-" Sebastian began.
"You needn't fear Ominis, I will be cautious. I only use it in small amounts for its enhancing effects." The Keeper interrupted Sebastian, speaking to Ominis before turning to glare at Sebastian. "And Sebastian, we swore we would not speak of testing in front of Ominis."
Sebastian winced. "Right, sorry Ominis."
Ominis sighed and shook his head. "You might as well finish it now that I've heard it."
The Keeper grimaced. "Alright, then yes, we can certainly test its effects on the scum we capture in the future, but such a time is far afield. So, for now I'd like you to not interact with this magic for your own safety."
Even though the results of those tests have already been determined. The Keeper thought to themselves, for they would risk no harm to their partners. Who knew what the long-term effects of this experimental energy might be, and the possibility of corruption was something that they were only willing to bet their own life against.
Sebastian tipped his head concedingly. "Very well, I swear I shall not touch or even look at it."
"Please do look, the last thing we need is for you to walk face first into goblin silver and knock yourself out cold." Ominis huffed, clearly attempting to push aside his anxiety.
The Keeper released Sebastian's hand, gently stroking Ominis' cheek and placing a chaste kiss on his lips. "You once trusted me enough to let me cast Imperio on you. Trust me again and let go of your fear."
Trust me to absolve you of all guilt. Ominis could almost hear the seductive offer whispered beneath their words, and were it anyone else, such a request would be preposterous. But...
His fingers tightened around theirs, trembling for a moment before relaxing. Leaning forward, he pressed their foreheads together and released a shaky breath. "I trust you."
Ominis swallowed, shutting his eyes tightly. Merlin knows I shouldn't.
"Well, it would seem that it certainly merits, I'd say, 100 points to their house? - wouldn't you agree?"
"Ah. Yes. Thank you, Professor WeasleyâŠ"
"...I suppose we have our winner!"
Ominis smiled wryly at the whoops and cheers that accompanied the Keeper to their house table. Sebastian was going to be so peeved that he'd missed the house cup awarding at the Leaving Feast, especially with such a dramatic win for their house.
He turned to his right as he felt the Keeper drop into the seat beside him, likely waving their housemates away. "Congratulations, I imagine that you'll be the pride of the Slytherin house till we graduate."
"As though I need another reason to be scrutinised." The Keeper muttered dryly in a low voice.
Ominis swallowed, reminded once more of the need to keep a low profile, considering the Keeperâs⊠plans and the Pain energy they'd been consuming. He could feel their fingers curl around his under the table, and closing his eyes, he focused on their warmth to force those thoughts away.
It has nothing to do with him. He is just a bystander. He just happens to be the lover of a pair of what society would consider criminals. People that he shouldn't want to be with, shouldn't desire, but Sebastian and the Keeper were unfortunate, not bad, they werenât evil.
"Wow, that was quite a win. And after everything you did, you definitely deserve it!" A cheerful voice cut through Ominis thoughts, drawing him back into the moment as the Keeper removed their hand from his.
"Thank you, Poppy, but I couldn't have done any of it by myself." The Keeper's voice was back to its usual polite poise.
"You needn't be so modest, you're amazing! I've known that since you defended me, and I'm honoured to have had your help this year."
"Please, Poppy, give yourself more credit, your courage in the face of poachers and dragons was no less inspiring."
"I could be brave because you were there with me! A- are you sure you won't be able to stay at my place for a while during the break? I was hoping to introduce you to my Gran, she's been wanting to meet you."
"I am sorry about that, perhaps another time, I've got quite a few things I need to do before the next term starts."
As he listened to them speak, Ominis felt a strange mix of pride and irritation.
Certainly, the Keeper was far more genuine with Sebastian and Ominis. Showing him both their scars and their underlying viciousness. Not something Ominis had ever thought he'd feel proud of, but over the last few months he'd come to feel more⊠well, more, towards the Keeper.
They'd started off rocky, the Keeper inspiring jealousy and fear over Sebastian in him. It had hurt and confused him that Sebastian trusted a stranger enough to share Ominis' secrets with them, but he'd quickly come to see why.
It was just so easy to trust the Keeper.
Their charisma and confidence just made it too easy to convince oneself that they could be relied upon. Their ability to say what Ominis needed to hear⊠what Ominis wanted to hear, was uncanny. Somehow, they made him feel safe and secure.
Even though letting them cast Imperio on him, all those months ago, had eventually led to the horrifyingly unfortunate turn of events. Had led to Sebastian killing his uncle, after Solomon chosen to attack them instead of going to Black, like Ominis had expected, like the man should have, Ominis had a hard time blaming the Keeper for it.
After all, nobody had done what they should have. Solomon hadn't, Sebastian hadn't, and everything had fallen apart. Like he'd said to the Keeper outside the catacombs, they did what they had to, and he'd agreed.
Ominis had heard Sebastian and the Keeper speak as they left the catacomb and had felt some measure of joy when Sebastian's voice echoed through the well enclosed rock.
"We've always looked out for each other - Ominis and I. I hope he knows that hasn't changed."
Despite how things ultimately went, Ominis felt immense gratitude towards the Keeper. The Imperius curse had given him a way to not feel guilty for Sebastian's actions, ensured that Sebastian didn't hate him, and in fact, made Sebastian feel some guilt over what had been done to Ominis.
He'd had never thought that he'd one day be grateful to someone for casting an unforgivable on him. He still wasn't sure how to feel about that.
The Keeper had even given him a rationale that shifted blame, for choosing not to turn Sebastian in, to Anne. Allowing him to protect Sebastian like he wanted, while telling himself that turning Sebastian in would only punish Anne. So, surely turning Sebastian in would be the wrong thing to do.
He tried not to think about the mental gymnastics he was doing to dodge responsibility. A part of Ominis understood that he should feel guilty, but a larger part was alright with ignoring reality as long as it made him feel better.
Sebastian had made it impossible for Ominis to ignore his dangerous behaviour, and so heâd had no choice but to follow him, to eavesdrop on him. It wasnât like heâd wanted to go against his best friend. Heâd had to, for Sebastianâs own good, to keep him alive and well. So, he had been relieved when the Keeper took that burden from him.
Ominis had no doubt that he would not be nearly as happy as he currently was, if the Keeper had dashed his hopes by telling him to turn Sebastian in. The thought alone was horrifying enough to make him vomit, because he knew he would have done so. Too afraid of the responsibility for such a heavy decision, even though he needed Sebastian like he needed air..
So, he was grateful.
The Keeper never judged him, they simply gave him what he needed, even before he knew he needed it.
Ominis wasn't sure when it'd started, but he'd come to depend on the Keeper's words to ease his many anxieties, and now he'd come to trust them to always do so. To be there for him when he needed them. To protect and hold Sebastian in check. As long as he had them, Sebastian would remain by his side too.
Perhaps that was what made him bristle at the way Poppy spoke to the Keeper, the way they responded in turn, and the fact that they'd dropped his hand when Poppy approached.
Was it jealousy? He'd felt that over Sebastian, but even then, despite his threats to the Keeper, he'd been more frustrated at Sebastian himself, rather than the Keeper.
Whereas this time, he was almost entirely irritated at Poppy, even though she'd done nothing to deserve such feelings from him. Perhaps this was because he could hear from their tone that the Keeper was merely being cordial towards her, rather than showing her favouritism, the way that Sebastian had by giving the Keeper access to their Undercroft.
The itch to tell Poppy that the Keeper was staying with Sebastian and Ominis during the summer break, so she could introduce her gran to someone else, perhaps a dugbog- was unbearable, but Ominis suppressed it and took a gulp of pumpkin juice from his cup instead.
It had been an unspoken agreement to keep their relationship low profile, they didn't need attention for being in a relatively rare polyamorous relationship.
Not to mention that Ominis wasn't keen on his family finding out that he was dating a muggleborn. He wasn't ashamed of the Keeper or Sebastian, but he didn't want any unnecessary problems.
Slytherins were rarely openly affectionate in the first place anyway, most seeing the need to maintain appearances and propriety. There was simply no need for anyone else to know and frankly it wasn't anyone else's business.
"Guess I'll see you when school starts then, do write often!"
"Of course, I'll see you then, Poppy." The Keeper nodded as their friend returned to the Hufflepuff table, their smile widening as they spotted Sebastian making his way over to the table.
"I see from the banners everywhere that our house won. Though, since when did we have that many points?" Sebastian asked as he took a seat beside the Keeper.
"Weasley decided to give me a hundred points for taking down Ranrok." The Keeper chuckled with a shrug.
"Well, you certainly deserve it, kind of bummed I missed it, to be honest." Sebastian pouted ever so slightly.
"I'd say it wasn't nearly as important as what you were occupied with." The Keeper waved a hand dismissively before leaning closer and lowering their voice. "So, how did it go?"
Sebastian smirked, replying in an equally low voice. "Swimmingly, Professor Sharp didn't seem suspicious of 'Solomon's signature' at all. Where did you learn to copy handwriting like that?"
"I'm not sure I want to know." Ominis murmured.
The Keeper shrugged. "I used to forge notes between caretakers to steal food when I was pressed for⊠giving more than I was willing. I just needed to hold out till the boys gave up on it. I tried not to do it too often though, I didn't want to get caught and lose the option."
Sebastian and Ominis grimaced deeply.
Sighing, the Keeper took a hand from each boy into theirs under the table. "Hey, don't let that distract you. This is a victory. With Professor Sharp thinking Solomon will be taking care of me this summer, we get to leave Hogwarts together and spend the next two months of our break together."
Sebastian gave a soft huff and Ominis smiled weakly.
Squeezing the Keeper's hand, Sebastian nodded. "You're right, let's enjoy the feast, and then⊠we'll go home."
Notes:
Finally starting to move the plot forward! Hopefully it feels believable for Ominis to be thinking this way, I've not had a chance to go into his mental state much during all of this but I did want to explain why he's been going along with the Keeper's emotional manipulation all this time, to make sure we're all on the same page.
In a way, Ominis wants to be manipulated. To shift his best friend duties to someone who'd only been Sebastian's friend for barely a year.
I've said it before but considering the contents of this chapter, it bears repeating, that if we ask Ominis to trust us rather than use Imperio on him, the player character doesn't tell Sebastian the contents of the deal they made with Ominis. Which means they know if Sebastian found out, he'd walk right back to Ominis and tell him he's not doing that deal. So the player character outright lies to Sebastian. That's actually worse than using Imperio on Ominis, at least in the Impero path we don't lie to BOTH Ominis and Sebastian.
It actually makes a lot of sense that Ominis is nicer to us later if we go with Imperio, since it's an illusion for his benefit and the fact that he is nicer to us at all, shows that he is aware of it at least to some extent.
We also see during the polyjuiced-as-Black chat with Ominis, that he works hard on Potions or Herbology, since an essay on the uses of Dittany could be for either class. I think that could be an indication of interest in becoming a Healer since both of those classes are required for the job.
Edit: Apparently in a very recent lore drop from a Twitch Stream award, it looks like Slytherin's Head of House might be Professor Ronen rather than Sharp. So, er, oops, sorry but this was published long before that and at the time I went with Sharp because he's quite an obvious parallel with Snape and he's got the mildest reaction to Unforgivables, merely telling us not to cast them in front of him.
So, please forgive me for not rewriting to account for that revelation, the identity of the head of house is not very impactful to the story anyway-

@ruucellcore I can't agree more it must've been hard for mc. So i decided to write about this i hope you don't mind and sorry that it's short this is all i can think about. I hope you enjoy it đ
Mc is non-binary pronounce is they/them
Fandom: twisted wonderland
Category: fluffy fluff, mc suffering because of the boys.
Pairing: SDC boys and mc of course
I didn't sign up for this
The light of the sun lit up the inside of mcâs room as the sunset lit up the sky and that was the cue for vil to wake everyone up and that meant the boys will not let mc have some sleep.
As if on cue the door to Mcâs room swung open Kalim running into Mcâs room happily with Ace and Deuce, Epel and lastly Jamil behind the white haired boy as they chatted and woke a very tired Mc up who sighed and rubbed their eyes which had black circles under them from the lack of sleep.
Epel took a seat casually on Mcâs bed patting their back as Mc whined slamming their head into their pillow before sighing and getting up. Kalim patted Mcâs head smiling widely at Mc as they go to the bathroom to get ready.
After Mc finished getting ready they went downstairs their face feeling soft and smooth after they applied the skincare vil gave them. They rubbed their cheeks as they entered the living room finding vil standing there with his arms crossed.
âyouâre lateâ Vil says sighing softly. Mc was one minute late and vil was strangely more fussy this morning than usual for no reason. Â
Mc nodded their head nervously apologizing to vil who only sighed one more time then turned around to look at the other boys who were full of energy strangely considering the time they had to wake up at.
âNow that everyone is here we can start with our schedule for this morningâ Vil says explaining to everyone what today's schedule is.
After that they start with their schedule it being breakfast today. Mc decided to try and make a simple healthy breakfast for themselves and grim who was whining about being hungry as usual.
Mc tried not to get annoyed at the small creature but couldn't help themselves the lack of sleep and the exhaustion they felt made them get annoyed at anything and everything.
Including the way Vil was watching them make breakfast telling them not to add certain ingredients while making breakfast.
Mc sighed softly after they finished making their food sitting down and starting to eat losing their appetite the minute Vil looked their way.
âAre you done? we have places to beâ Vil asked Mc. Epel sent Mc a sad smile their way as Mc got up to put their plate away and got ready to get out of the ramshackle dorm.
--------------------------------------------------
After everyone finished their schedule it was time to go home as they got inside the dorm Ace and Deuce started to argue on something that Mc was too tired to understand as they took a seat on the couch resting their head as they closed their eyes.
Jamil stood infront of mc realizing how tired they looked as he put his hand on their forehead checking their temperature which was warm as he sighed softly and telling Mc to go to their room who was very confused but complied and went to their room anyways.
They finally laid down on their bed feeling all the tension leave their body as they fully relaxed in their bed rubbing their face agianst their soft pillow as they fell asleep almost immediately.
A few minutes later Jamil came into Mcâs room carrying a bowl of soup as he sat down next to Mc on the bed patting their arm gently waking them up from their short nap.Â
âI got you some soup this will make you feel better and donât worry i got premission from vil he says you should rest until you feel betterâ Jamil says to Mc softly handing them the bowl of soup as mc noticed the headâs of her other dorm mates peeking in from behind the door their faces full of worry.
Mc smiled softly at the boys starting to eat their soup as they started to feel better from the warm soup.
The boys spent the rest of their time with mc in their room talking about their day and whining about how mean Vil can be as the said male joined them later scolding them before joining them rambling about how annoying Neige is.
In the end mc realized that they never signed up for getting sick and exhausted but they wouldn't have it any other way.

THRILL SEEKER (WIP)
DEMOÂ | OFFICIAL DISCORDÂ | RO FACECLAIMS
Thrill Seeker is rated 18+ for gore, violence, bad language, and themes of physical abuse. Any other warnings will be added as the game progresses.
Thrill Seeker is an interactive fiction horror/mystery game with romantic aspects. Solve the mystery of who killed your mother and make some friends along the way.
Rules for asks
Upon coming back to the family home from college, you find the corpse of your mother mutilated almost beyond recognition. Apart from the terrible scene, there is seemingly no evidence found by the police and no suspects are brought up.
The lack of answers is driving you crazy, and so you set out to find out who has killed your mother yourself. This job will be difficult-- there will be friends that can help you along the way, but some of them have darkness that runs through them bone deep, and to trust the wrong person can be deadly.Still, if you can find it in yourself to trust them... or to simply look past your own judgement-- you might be able to romance them, as well.
There is corruption all around you-- make sure you know who to trust. Make sure you can trust yourself.Â
Will you be led into corruption, yourself?
- fully customize your MC - choose their name, physical appearance, race, and gender (including cis, non binary and transgender options, all of which will influence the story!)
- Change your MCâs personality - your choices affect their reality, and change your ending (some which are good and some... which are less than good, by the conventional sense)
- Befriend and/or romance three love interests (gender selectable) who influence YOU just as much as you influence them, and who can change your ending
- Solve your motherâs murder and/or ruin your life
Hansol/Hanyoung Blackthorne | m/f | 26 yrs old | Hansolâs height: 195 cm | Hanyoungâs height: 185 cm | Korean/Vietnamese descent
Hannie was your old high school rival, going to the same private school as you did. Differing from you, who got there on scholarship, they got there on their parentâs money. Their family owns a law firm, which has always been Hannieâs dream to own-- and own, they now do.Â
You remember them as infuriating and just a little too perfect to be real. Sometimes people are gifted with just a little too much-- save some talent for the rest of us! It wouldâve been easier to let go of your rivalry if they were just some silver spoon-- no, they just had to be a golden one, too. Smartest in class, best in athletics, super tall and super handsome-- and to make matters worse, they ran for student body president. You never stood a chance-- you were forced to go for vice!
They were the last person you expected to see at your motherâs funeral, and you expected even less their want to help you. Again, the thought comes into your head... too perfect to be real.
You both still butt heads-- itâs hard not to. But at least theyâre genuine.Â
Right?
Oliver/Olivia Williams | m/f | 25 yrs old | Oliverâs height: 173 cm | Oliviaâs height: 179 cm | British descent
Oli was your neighbour and best friend growing up. Youâve always been together for as long as you can remember, and theyâve been there for you through thick and thin. You havenât seen them in a while-- you lost contact when you left for college.Â
Still you can remember how they made you smile. You canât think of a more bright person. They lit up every room they were in, their laughter was infectious, and they were always there for you. Whether it was your first breakup, another time of Hannie beating you, through thick and thin, they were always there. And, you can bet you were there for them, just as much, and you cared for them with just as much ferocity as they cared for you.
They were one of the first you contacted when you found out about her death. They were a cop, after all, and they lived in the same area as your mother-- there was no one you trusted more.Â
But for all of Oliâs kindness and similarities... something seems off. They arenât the same person they used to be, and you donât think itâs just the years. Something changed them.
You can only hope itâs not for the worse.
Nneka/Naasir Adebayo | m/f | 28 yrs old | Nnekaâs height: 152 cm | Naasirâs height: 185 cm | Igbo descent
N Adebayo is a doctor... or at least, theyâre trying to be. And theyâre almost done their studies!
They met your mother when they were just a child. N had many health problems, but your mother had been there for them and always treated them with kindness. She inspired them to go into medicine. If they could make a difference in someoneâs life like how your mother made one in theirs-- that would make them happy beyond belief.Â
You met them at the funeral, and they were passionate about helping you. They had already been looking for might have done it-- you were surprised to find that. N is passionate in everything they do, and they pour all of their heart into everything. They're the kindest person youâve ever met, and your heart feels light just looking at them.
However, thereâs a sharp edge to that smile. They change emotions so quickly-- and theyâre so good at acting, too. What do they really feel? What do they really want?
Just pray youâll have the upper hand when you find out.

Book Recommendations
I read fantasy almost exclusively, and in the last few years Iâve decided to mostly read fantasy with queer characters (I still read a few mainstream fantasy things, but at this point very few). Iâm gay, so yes, a lot of the books I like to read feature gay male protagonists, but like my own books, some on this list strive to represent a much bigger audience. Many of these authors are themselves LGBTQ+, including trans and non-binary authors.Â
These are all books Iâve read and liked, and of course, there are many more books Iâve read that Iâm not including here.  The books and authors on this list are all also, in their own ways, influences shaping my own writing.Â
Classics:
Mercedes Lackeyâs Last Herald Mage Series (gay fantasy): gay MC, tragic love story, ultimately beautiful storytelling that eventually lets its MC have a happily every after, if in an unexpected way. This is one of the first fantasy books ever written with a gay MC. Itâs old, and as such, there are few things readers might find âproblematicâ from a contemporary perspective- but for those of us who lived in the âbeforeâ times, when there was literally almost *no* LGBTQ media, this book series changed everything. I cried my eyes out the first time I read it. It is still deeply meaningful to me. The follow-up series, Mage Winds, has the MC from Last Herald Mage, and his husband, show up (again in unexpected ways), and also has secondary gay characters who play a main role in the plot.Â
Lynn Flewellingâs Nighrunner Series (gay fantasy): gay MCs, beautiful (and decidedly not tragic) MM relationship at the heart of it, lots of spying, intrigue, and magic. Itâs awesome.Â
Sarah Monette: Â Melusine. Â This series is very good- magic system, high fantasy, gay MC, but does also have some potentially triggering scenes (the MC is raped at one point). Â
Best Gay Fantasy (Fantasy writing first and foremost, but with romance thrown in sometimes):Â
KD Edwards: The Tarot Sequence series, starting with The Last Sun. Urban fantasy centered around a magical society organized around great houses, each of which one of the major arcana of the Tarot. The MC is gay, the last scion of a fallen house (House Sun), fighting to restore his house and understand what happened the night it fell- the night his father, Lord Sun, was murdered. Itâs awesome. The whole series is lit.Â
Gideon the Ninth by Tasmyn Muir. Lesbian necromancers in space. Itâs fucking awesome. How could you not want to read that? The sequel, Harrow the Ninth, is very much a mindfuck. Itâs mostly all about Harrow dealing with some deep trauma from book 1, and Gideon doesnât show up until nearly 2/3 through the book (but Gideon does show up- and when she does, it is so, so worth it). Â
Ginn Haleâs Cadeleonian Series, starting with Lord of the White Hell. I canât say enough about this series. Hale is one of the best LGBTQ writers in the game. The second series is called Champion of the Scarlet Wolf, followed by Master of Restless Shadows. The first two series retain romance as a key element of the storytelling, but in Master of Restless Shadows (which still follows many of the same group of characters) the plot seems much less about relationships and more about unraveling the huge conspiracy threatening to set loose the destruction of the entire world. . .Â
Ginn Hale has another series I want to mention- because it is an astounding feat that is not read nearly enough. The Rifter Series. It was written as a serial (so shorter installments, but more books), featuring a gay man transported to a parallel world where he turns out to be the incarnation of their god- a literal messiah. They call this messiah âthe Rifterâ- and he wields the destructive powers of their god. There is a love story at the heart here- but it unfolds slowly, agonizingly at time, and when it finally comes to fruition it is so achingly tender and beautiful that you will cry for ages. The story itself is so complex, weaving across timelines, that at first you will be confused- then the pieces will start to slot together in your head, and then all of the sudden, the whole image of what has happened and how will come together in your head and it will shatter your entire freaking mind. And you will bow down in awe at the feet of the great Ginn Hale. Â
Nazri Noor: Nazri has quite a few series out- the first one, Darkling Mage, has a gay MC, although romance/relationship isnât a big part of the story. Itâs got gods, supernaturals, magic, and cosmic threats- as well as massive snark from the MC, Dustin. I love it. The follow-up series, set in the same world, are all very good. My favorite is the Arcane Hearts series, which features a gay couple as the main protagonists of the story (and which Nazri bills as being more romance- but truthfully, all of his books are very magic/action oriented, whether they have romance in them or not).Â
Michael Taggart: Misfit Mage series. Is this series âgood?â Frankly, I think some younger gay readers will think it is cringe (the author is an older gay man, and there are moments where I can really see reflection of an earlier version of gay culture that in many ways, no longer exists). But I really, really enjoy reading it, and will keep reading it as he puts out more books. The MC is a gay guy who nearly dies, and awakens as a supernatural being able to do magic. Lots of the story involves problem-solving with magic, thinking through complex ways to condense energy, and other kinds of procedural magic type things. There is an element of progression fantasy here too, as the character gets increasingly more powerful as he figures things out. Thereâs a gay incubus who becomes his lover- but itâs not nearly as bad as it sounds. Itâs actually sort of sweet, and I end up liking his boyfriend quite a lot. And itâs not a huge part of the book- itâs just there, while lots of magic stuff, and fighting against a bad group mages trying to kill them all, takes center stage. Award winning fiction? No. But a fun way to kill some time.Â
Meraki P. Lyhne: The Vargr Series. This is an odd one- itâs werewolf shifter fantasy, but set in Denmark (and written by a Danish author). The MC is gay, a young American who finds out his Danish father who he thought was dead, is actually not dead- and is a werewolf in a huge family-like pack of Vargr, or Norse werewolves. The storytelling is distinct in that it is slower- while there is an overarching plot that unfolds through the series, the focus of most chapters is on the MC and his development as a person, as an Alpha werewolf, and as a member of this strange community of werewolves. Itâs fun reading, but the âflavorâ of this series is very different than most American-written fantasy.Â
MM/Gay Fantasy/Paranormal Romance (as in, fantasy and romance are balanced evenly in the plot)
Jordan L. Hawk: The Whyborne and Griffin is a historical and paranormal fantasy series is set in the 1800âČs, and is a twist on Lovecraftian mythos (done in a way Lovecraft would have hated, but which you will love). Itâs got magic, love, horrors from the outside, elder gods, you know, all the good stuff. The SPECTR series is also very good (more urban fantasy).Â
Sheena Jolie (formerly SJ Himes): The Beacon Hill Sorcerer series, starting with the Necromancerâs Dance. Fantastic series. Urban fantasy, magical battles, and falling in love with a vampire. Whatâs not to like? Really great series.Â
Hailey Turnerâs Soulbound Series, starting with A Ferry of Bones and Gold. A special forces combat mage with a dark history gets thrown into world-ending plots, gets harassed by gods, and manages to fall in love. Vampires, werewolves, gods, just about everything you could ask for. One of the best Urban Fantasy/Romance series- well, written, and best of all, the series is finished. Block of a couple weeks, and have at it!
Megan Derr: Black Magic. This is another ânecromancer falls in love with a knightâ story- but itâs a really, really good one. Megan Derr writes LGBTQ romance and fantasy in worlds that are inclusive- including at times protagonists that are non-binary, trans, etc. Â
M.A. Grant:Â Prince of Air and Darkness, the Darkest Court series.Â
Sam Burns and W.M. Fawkes: Anything theyâve written together is pure gold. Try Fire and Valor, Book 1: The Kingâs Dragon.
Kai Butler: San Amaro Investigations (Book One: Wormwood Summer). Urban fantasy involving the Fae, and lots of Fae shenanigans. But also a fun, interesting world, and a developed Fae mythology and history. Â
MM/Gay Romance (as in, the romance is the driving plot of the book)
CS Pacat: The Captive Prince. This series is. . . well, itâs complicated, and potentially triggering. A prince gets overthrown, and secretly sold into slavery to the neighboring country (who are his enemies), and ends up serving the prince of that country. Of course, itâs not an accident. Itâs revenge. And it gets brutal at times- the MC is whipped nearly to death in one scene (by the other MC). And yet, as their relationship unfolds, they become literally the most dramatic and well-done example of enemies to lovers Iâve ever read. This series is beloved by gay romance readers, but we also all get how problematic it is. And yes, we read it anyway.Â
A.H. Lee: The Knight and the Necromancer. This series is incredible- the plot is actually very deep and well developed, and the story really sustains three books. Plus, the love story that unfolds is pretty great. This is my favorite gay romance fantasy of all time. Â
Lee Welch: Salt Magic, Skin Magic. Victorian era MM romance with paranormal elements. MC is being held captive by his father by means he canât explain and doesnât understand-- all he knows is, he is trapped on their remote estate.Â
Michelle Notaro: The Ellewood Chronicles, starting with the Enchanterâs Flame. Is this series âgoodâ? This is pretty much the prime example of sometimes cringe is exactly what you want. Itâs sappy. The plots are there, but the found family trope, the relationships, and the romance are absolutely the formula for this series. And yet, I read every single one of them. They made me feel good. They made me happy. They let me live in the fantasy of being in a LGBTQ family full of magic, safety, and love-- while the monsters of the world are held at bay by the wards surrounding the Ellewood lands. Sometimes you donât want heavy, you just want to read and be happy. This series is that. Â
AJ Sherwood and Jocelyn Drake: Their Scales and Spells series is wonderfully fun to read (dragonshifters falling in love with mages, lots of gay and non-binary characters). Both authors have a lot of gay romance titles out- all with fun elements in them. Iâve enjoyed everything Iâve read from both of them. Jocelyn Drake has a series coming out now that is her take on Final Fantasy XV-type story telling called the Godstone Saga- itâs an original story, but if you read it, youâll see the FFXV influence on it. Itâs nice.Â
Kiki Clark:Â The Kincaid Pack series is fun.Â
Mainstream Fantasy with big LGBTQ representation or storylines:Â
Andrew Rowe: The main character of his Arcane Ascension series is gay, although the text seems to imply that he is a homo-romantic ace, or at least demi. Â
John Bierce: The Mage Errant series has excellent LGBTQ representation, including both gay and lesbian side characters. The MC is not gay, but the world and the series as a whole feels very welcoming and inclusive.Â
Shami Stovall: The Frith Chronicles. The MC is straight, but lots of major side characters are LGBTQ+. Fantastic series, following an underdog MC who bonds with a supernatural being to get fantastic powers- the way all âarcanistsâ or magic-wielders are created in this world. He joins the Frith Guild, a group of famous adventurers heâs looked up to his whole life, to learn and advance, and eventually find his way to being a master arcanist- but somebody is trying to remake the world, and not in a good way. Begin with Knightmare Arcanist.
Melissa McPhail: The Pattern of Shadow and Light series, starting with Cephraelâs Hand, is one of the most complex, amazing, well-crafted fantasy series Iâve ever read. In the beginning, first book or two, it will feel like the only LGBTQ rep you see is in the form of a villain (Darshan), who is pretty literally trying to destroy the world and all living things (so, not great, yeah?). But as the story unfolds, McPhail introduces a gay love story that she takes the time to develop, and itâs fucking beautiful and heartbreaking. And then even Darshan seems to find a chance at redemption. Itâs a long series... and the LGBTQ rep gets better and better as it goes on.  Melissa McPhail died unexpectedly from late-stage cancer that was found too late. She still had the final two books in the series unpublished, but they were *mostly* done. Her family intends to publish what she finished. And this series is so good, so mindblowingly amazing, that itâs worth reading. Â
Not LGBTQ at all, but still really fucking good books:Â
Will Wightâs Travelers Gate series, starting with House of Blades.Â
Will Wightâs Cradle series. Each book gets better and better (progression fantasy). Probably the best progression fantasy ever written.Â
Michael Manning: Mageborn series, most of the stuff heâs written. Art of the Adept is also a good series. He has one series, Embers of Illeniel, which I do *not* recommend- itâs full of triggering stuff (rape, genocide, casual murder and mayhem... the MC is not a good guy), and is generally really dark (which the author admits to). But I enjoyed everything else heâs written. Â
Edward W. Robertson: most everything heâs written. I love his books. Start with The White Tree (Cycle of Arawn Book 1).Â
Patrick Rothfuss: The Name of the Wind. What I really want to recommend here is The Slow Regard of Silent Things, which is a transformative book to read- the MC is a person who lives in an underground labyrinth beneath a school, who is neuro-atypical, and who interacts with and sees the world in a wholely unique way. Reading the book is like a meditation, deeply moving and profound. But to make sense of it, you sort of need to understand the bigger world it is set in, which is from the Name of the Wind.Â
Michael Miller: The Songs of Chaos series. Dragonrider fantasy, sort of like Dragonriders of Pern. A slow start- the first few chapters were very much lowly pot boy in the presence of arrogant dragon riders and nobles who barely notice him. Once you get past that initial stage, however, the story picks up and the storytelling gets much better. The lowly pot-boy steals a dragon egg... and you can guess where it goes from there.Â
Brandon Sanderson. If you read fantasy, surely you have already read him. Â

ohhh so may I request some Mammon headcanons with a MC who comes out as non-binary saying "I'm not a girl"? and they are quite nervous about it but wants to tell him bc it's important for them
Ooh! You may! This is so interesting! I loved trying this! Hope I did it well! I respect all the lgbtq+ community so I want to make sure it makes everyone happy!
_________
Scenario one; alone:
You and mammon had decided to hang out in his room for the day. And although he had asked first, as soon as you agreed he started talking about how attached to him you were, which is when you started whining at him. (though you truthfully found his tsundere character cute.)
Finally you managed to drag Mammon to his room, with him boasting about how lonely you must be without him the whole way. When you eventually got to his room, you decided you would watch a movie together. So Mammon turned off the lights and cleaned off the sofa best he could. (It was very messy) while you made snacks in the kitchen. He was already sat down when you got in there, and browsing through the movies. "This one looks good!" "Are you serious? Lilo and stitch?" "Yeah! It looks cool!" You thought it was a little childish of him to choose a Disney movie but you decided you would let it slide purely because of how exited he was.
You were both enjoying watching the movie, making little remarks about the plot and animation.
Then we come to the moment. It was awkward sure, but very relieving. "Hey! You kinda remind me of Lilo!" "In what way?" "Your a curious girl who loves even the weirdest of people!" "Except for the girl part." "W..hat?" "I'm not a girl." "Uh- oh- i-" Mammon stuttered over his words, looking distressed. "You're... Not a girl?" "Umm no I'm not. I'm sorry if that's a bit weird but it's how I fe-" "No way! It's cool! So are you male or...?" "Non-binary." You stated confidently. Although inside you were scared for his reaction. "Cool." That was it? Cool? What? "If that's how you feel, I'm all for it!" "Really?" "Yeah really! Why not? I think it's awesome you're bein' yourself human! I'll fend off any of my brothers if they say otherwise! I'll even fight off diavolo for ya" "ahaha! Mammon!" His sudden support and the way he jumped up and made a fighting stance to pretend made you giggle. But it also made you heart warm. Just to know he loved you no matter how you felt about yourself reassured you. You both fell asleep. Cuddled up on the sofa. You had fallen asleep first after many nights of restlessness wondering what the guys would think and who you were. But now you had love and support from your favourite demon, you could do anything.
__________
Scenario two; with the others:
You yawned as you approached the candle lit table where the plates were neatly placed out with a wonderful looking array of food placed upon them. You plonked yourself down in your chair lazily. Though not as lazily as the avatar of sloth who wasn't even there yet but was most definitely going to be the laziest to sit at the table that morning. Or more likely, sleep at the table. You picked up your utensils and began to chew on your delicious breakfast, eagerly shoving it down your throat both in happiness with the wonderful food and also in a rush to finish before the others like most mornings. First to walk in was Satan and Beel. Stan relaying some of the food information he's read the night before. Something about food poisoning? You weren't really listening. Beel didn't seem to be either. Next to walk in was Asmo and Mammon. Asmo being as dramatic as ever, accusing mammon if stealing something and somehow, he looked great doing it. Mammon looked over to you as soon as he walked in. "Mornin' human! Why're you eatin' so fast? You're gonna choke!" "I'm hungry and need to get ready! I'm not gonna take forever like some people!" You said, looking mammon and Asmo dead in the eyes. Levi walked in, hunched over. Yes sat down. neatly at first, then he slumped down in his chair, groaning and rubbing his eyes. Finally, lucifer walked in. "Do you all remember what time of the year it is?" He exclaimed his straight face never once even flinching from it's stone-like look. Mammon groaned, suddenly realizing. RAD physical exams. Ugh. Lucifer turned his head to your direction, his expression softening as he did so. "Do you know how you're going to do it? Are you going to do the female version or male?" He already knew. As did most of the brothers. All except Mammon had either been told or just pieced it together. "What? They're goin' to do the female one ain't they?" Said the snow haired demon, confused. "Ain't they a girl?" He said. Glancing over at you, his brown furrowed. "I'm not a girl." You said. Sternly, yes, but with a slight soft undertone. Mammon looked shocked. He had had no clue. "You're not a girl?" He asked, tilting his head. "No." Satan chimed in, seemingly annoyed by his moronic older brother's obliviousness. "I'm non-binary." You said. You looked serious, but inside you were worried. If your worry had been showing, your nails would be ruined from how much you would have bitten them. "Oh. Wait, how did I not get told! Did you guys want me to find out like this?!" Mammon exclaimed at his brothers in surprise. "No, we just couldn't be bothered to explain it to you." Asmo said, looking at himself in his phone's camera app simultaneously. "Wow. rude." Mammon said, looking very irritated. "Uuggghh" belphie said from the other side of the room. "I hate mornings." He said as he plonked down,as you had predicted, in a much lazier way than you. "I agree." Beel said. " The only good thing about mornings is breakfast." "Well you all better hurry up or you'll be late. Y/n, I'd like you to think about my question please. I need it answered soon." "Yes, sir!" You exclaimed, saluting to him. Lucifer smirked and walked out. Mammon got up from his chair and walked over to you. "You need to tell me these things human! After all, I was ya first!" You chuckled at his remark. "Fine. from now on I'll tell you everything I think. And right now, I think you need to hurry up!" "Alright alright, calm down, I'm coming!" Mammon yelled as he rushed to grab his bag. Running back to you quickly, he walked off to RAD, with you smiling all the way. Mammon asking you questions about yourself, but of course being careful of what he said like the respectful demon he is.

ITâS FINALLY DONE! Every year, the Rainbow Book List Committee has more books to review, because literature is slowing getting queerer, and childrenâs and YA lit are at the forefront of that change. This year, our committee of 13 people had to review nearly 500 eligible titles, and 130 (well, 129) were good enough and queer enough to make the list. There were so many terrific books that we got a special dispensation to create TWO Top Ten lists--the first time the committee has done so! The Top Tens are below, and please visit the link above for the full list.
Iâm proud of our committeeâs focus on diversity--along lines of race, ethnicity, queer identity, and even genre. At least half of the Top Ten Books for Young Readers and seven of the Top Ten for Teen Readers are about characters of color, and most of those were written by authors of color. We also tried to feature as many different letters of the alphabet soup as possible. Iâve noted the racial and LGBTQIA+ rep for the books that Iâve read.
Here are the Top Ten Books for Young Readers:
Ana on the Edge by Sass, A.J. Ages 8 to 12. Sports Fiction/Figure Skating. MC is nonbinary and Jewish-Chinese-American. Ana is a champion figure-skater. She hates her new princess-themed program, but how can she tell her mother that, when it cost so much money? And why does it bother her so much, anyway? When she finds the word ânonbinary,â she realizes why the program doesnât fit, but she still has a lot of work to do repairing relationships that have suffered in the meantime.
The Deep & Dark Blue by Smith, Niki. Ages 8 to 12. Fantasy. One of 2 MCs is a trans girl, all characters appear to be Southeast Asian. A pair of twins flee after a political coup that puts their lives at risk. They decide to disguise themselves as Hanna and Grayce, two girls living in the Communion of the Blue, an order of weaving women who spin magic like wool. What one twin doesnât know is that, for the other, being Grayce isnât a disguise. This is a beautiful story about self-discovery, acceptance, and affirmation.
Drawing on Walls: A Story of Keith Haring by Burgess, Matthew and Josh Cochran (Illustrator). Ages 6 to 14. Biography. MC is a white gay man. This colorful picture-book biography traces the life and art of Keith Haring.
The Every Body Book: LGBTQ+ Inclusive Guide for Kids about Sex, Gender, Bodies, and Families by Simon, Rachel E. and Noah Grigni (Illustrator). Ages 8 to 12. Nonfiction/Health. Various identities and races included. Filled with self-affirming information, The Every Body Book uses inclusive language, illustrations, and facts to cover a number of important topics for young people including consent, relationships, gender, sex, puberty, and hormones.
King and the Dragonflies by Callender, Kacen. Ages 8 to 12. Realistic Fiction. MC is a gay black boy, his best friend is a gay white boy. Kingâs familyâespecially his fatherâhave strong opinions about what it means to be a Black man, and they donât allow for being gay. But King admires his friend Sandy for escaping an abusive home and living his truth no matter what. If King comes out, too, can his father learn to change?
Magic Fish by Nguyen, Trung Le. Ages 12 and up. Realistic Fiction/Fantasy. MC is a gay Vietnamese-American boy. A young Vietnamese-American boy literally canât find the words to tell his parents that heâs gay, but cross-cultural fairytales help bridge the language barrier in this beautifully-illustrated graphic novel.Â
My Maddy by Pitman, Gayle E. and Violet Tobacco (Illustrator). Ages 4-8. Realistic Fiction. MCâs parent is nonbinary, MC and her parent are white. My Maddy is a heartwarming story about a young girl and her parent. Readers learn that not all parents are boys or girls; some parents are just themselves. In this young girlâs case, that parent is her Maddy, a loving, caring parent who lives outside the gender binary.
My Rainbow by Neal, DeShanna, Trinity Neal, and Art Twink (Illustrator). Ages 4-8. Realistic Fiction. MC is an autistic black trans girl. Autistic trans girl Trinity wants to have long hair, but growing it out is too itchy! None of the wigs in the store are quite right, so Mom makes Trinity a special rainbow wig.
Our Subway Baby by Mercurio, Peter and Leo Espinosa (Illustrator). Ages 4 to 8. Adoption Non-fiction. MCs are white gay men, the baby they adopt is Black. Loving illustrations help tell the story of how an infant abandoned in a NYC subway station was adopted by the man who found him and his partner.
Snapdragon by Leyh, Kat. Snapdragon. Ages 10 to 14. Fantasy. Havenât read this one yet, so I canât comment on its representation. Snap gets to know the town witch and discovers that she may in fact have real magic and a secret connection to Snapâs familyâs past.
And here are the Top Ten Books for Teen Readers:
All Boys Arenât Blue: A Memoir-Manifesto by Johnson, George M. Ages 14 to 18. Memoir. Author/MC is a gay Black man. âMemoir-manifestoâ is a well-chosen label for this book, which relates stories from the authorâs childhood and young adulthood and contextualizes them within a queer Black experience. Although the authorâs family is loving and supportive, pervasive heteronormativity, queerphobia, and anti-Black racism threaten his mental, emotional, and physical safety.
Camp by Rosen, L.C. Ages 14 and up. Realistic Fiction. MC and his love interest are gay Jewish boys. For Randy, going away to Camp Outland is a breath of fresh air, a time to be exactly who Randy canât always be at school. But this year will be different. This year, Randy wonât be the flamboyant theater kid, this year Randy will be exactly the type of bro Hudson would want to date. Changing a thing or too will be necessary for Randy to succeed, even if that means leaving some friends behind.
Cemetery Boys by Thomas, Aiden. Ages 13 and up. Paranormal/Romance. MC is a trans Latino, his love interest is a gay Latino. Yadriel accidentally summons the wrong ghost in an attempt to prove himself a real brujo to his family who struggle to accept his gender identity. Though he thinks he is summoning the ghost of his cousin, he actually summons the ghost of Julian Diaz, and finds himself with not one, but two, mysterious deaths to investigate.
Circus Rose by Cornwell, Betsy. Ages 12 and up. Fantasy. One MC is white and one is mixed-race, one is a lesbian and one is questioning. Ivory and Rosie are twins and half-sisters, born to a bearded woman who refused to choose between her lovers, and raised in their motherâs circus. After a long foreign tour, they come home to find themselves under attack by religious zealots. As tragedy follows tragedy, will Ivory be able to save her circus family?
Elatsoe by Little Badger, Darcie  and Rovina Cai (Illustrator). Ages 12 and up. Mystery. MC is an aro/ace Lipan Apache girl. In this OwnVoices novel, Elatsoe is on a mission to discover who killed her beloved cousin, and why. If not for her cousin, then she is doing this for her people, the Indigenous Lipan Apache tribe. Elatsoe has the ability to raise ghosts from the dead, a tradition that has been passed down through generations. On this journey it will take vulnerability, wit, and the legends of her people for Elatsoe to understand all that is hidden in the small town of Willowbee.
Iâll Be the One by Lee, Lyla. Ages 13 and up. Realistic Fiction. MC is a bi Korean-American girl, her love interest is a bi Korean boy. Skye Shin dreams of becoming the worldâs first plus-sized K-pop star, and a reality TV competition may just be her chance. To win, sheâll have to deal with fatphobic beauty standards, fierce competition, and intense media scrutinyâas well as unexpected attraction to one of her competitors.
Miss Meteor by Mejia, Tehlor Kay and Anna-Marie McLemore. Ages 14 and up. Magical Realism. (I havenât read this one, but I think both MCs are WLW Latinas.) Lita is a star â literally. After falling to earth several years ago, sheâs now living life as a teenage girl. When the annual Miss Meteor pageant rolls around, Lita decides to enter â but will her ex-best friend Chicky be willing to help her? Will the pageant help her forget about the past and imagine a new future? Lita learns that winning isnât about being perfect, itâs about showing your true self to the world â even the parts that no one else understands.
You Should See Me in a Crown by Johnson, Leah. Ages 12 and up. Realistic Fiction. MC is a black WLW (woman-loving-woman). In this affectionate rom-com, Liz Lighty finds herself an unlikely candidate for prom queen at her affluent suburban school. Shy, awkward, Black, and low-income, Liz has never felt like she belonged, and she canât wait to leave for her dream college. But when her scholarship falls through, it seems her last resort is to win prom queen, and the scholarship money that comes with it. Lizâs plan is complicated when new girl Mack decides to run for prom queen alsoâŠand ends up running away with Lizâs heart.
War Girls by Onyebuchi, Tochi. Ages 12 and up. Science Fiction/Afro-Futurism. Both MCs are Nigerian, one is a WLW. In a not-so-distant future, climate change and nuclear disasters have made much of the earth unlivable. In the midst of war in Nigeria, two sisters, Onyii and Ify, are torn apart and face two very different futures. As their lives progress through years of untold violence and political unrest, battles with deadly mechs and cyborg soldiers outfitted with artificial limbs and organs, they are brought together again and again and must come to terms with how the war has impacted their lives.
When We Were Magic by Gailey, Sarah. Ages 14 and up. Contemporary Fantasy. MC is a white bi/questioning girl with gay dads, her friends are racially, ethnically, and queerily diverse. This firecracker of a novel follows a group of friends who attempt to correct the accidental murder of a classmate. When We Were Magic combines magic, friendship, and awkward moments to create a captivating story. Each character brings their own uniqueness to the strong group of friends, but despite their differences, their loyalty remains. Author Sarah Gailey has written another page turning novel, with the quirky strange content to boot.

What are some good trans/nb woman fiction or new adult (about being trans)
I think Nevada by Imogen Binnie and A Safe Girl to Love by Casey Plett are sort of The Standard Intro to Trans Woman Fiction, so if you havenât read those yet, definitely check âem out. You might also like:
Behrouz Gets Lucky by Avery Cassell (Genderqueer)
Tiny Pieces of Skull by Roz Kaveney
Iâve Got a Time Bomb by Sybil Lamb
Small Beauty by jia qin wilson-yang
As for New Adult, thereâs not a whole lot about girls being trans (for example, Hold Me by Courtney Milan has a trans female MC but isnât about transness at all), but I guess the go-tos there would be Rachel Goldâs Just Girls (which I honestly donât really recommend - my review is here:Â https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20702890-just-girls?ac=1&from_search=true - but I leave to you to make your own choice about whether you want to read it, because itâs the only NA I know of starring a trans girl MC thatâs actually about transness), and Elliot Wakeâs Cam Girl (written under Leah Raeder), which has an AFAB nonbinary LI, but I mention it with a strong caveat re: triggers. You might wanna look at some reviews here before checking out CG: https://xanwest.wordpress.com/2017/01/07/reviews-of-trans-andor-non-binary-lit-by-trans-andor-non-binary-reviewers/
(That link is also a great resource on trans books in general - excellent place to find titles liked by actual trans people, which full disclosure I am not.)
If youâre OK with NA about trans guys, too, my highest rec is for Austin Chantâs Coffee Boy, and heâs got a fantasy called Peter Darling as well. Elliot Wake has one called Bad Boy that I havenât read, but again, I definitely recommend reading reviews from the above link first. And for a non-binary MC in NA, check out Discovering Ray by Edie Danford.
I know you specifically didnât ask for YA, but Iâm gonna give a shoutout to Meredith Russoâs If I Was Your Girl anyway, just in case ;)

Pairing: sonny x reader.
Category: fluff, sonny's morning voice âš.
Lazy morning
The light of the sun made mc's eyes open up as the room lit up even with the curtains closed.
The sound of the birds chirping outside woke mc up fully as they nuzzled into the warmth surrounding them.
With a deep grumble sonny's hold on mc tightened his arms pressing their body into his.
The male falling back asleep as mc found comfort in his soft breaths and his arms that were tightly wrapped around them under the warm blanket.
Mc's hands moved to sonny's head running their fingers through his soft, yellow hair.
Mc remembered that they both weren't busy today and decided the the day before to stay home and spend their time with each other.
Sonny moved suddenly moving his head to rest his head on Mc's chest their heartbeat lulling him back to sleep.
Mc chuckled softly their voice still groggy from sleeping as the continued to run their fingers through sonny's hair.
Mc grabbed their phone from the bedside table opening it their eyes stinging from the bright light as they looked at the hour.
It was 6:30am which meant it was time to go back to sleep as mc placed their phone back where it was getting comfortable kissing sonny's head before going back to sleep.
After a few hours mc woke up again the sound of the birds annoying them as they felt something heavy resting on their chest as they tried to find sonny's head only to feel a huge bump under their shirt.
Mc tried to process what was happening as they looked through neck hole of their shirt only to see a messy head of yellow hair.
After a few minutes Mc's sleepy brain proceed that sonny was inside their shirt sleeping on their chest which resulted in that heavy feeling on their chest.
Sonny usually liked resting on Mc's chest to feel their heartbeat so it wasn't new but him being inside their shirt was definitely new.
Sonny's eyelashes fluttered softly as he started to wake up as mc admired his pretty face.
"morning love" mc says softly moving their hand under their shirt to push the hair out of sonny's face.
Sonny grabbing Mc's hand kissing their palm and resting it on his cheek.
"morning" sonny replied his voice deep and groggy from sleep as he yawned softly.
"so how did you get under there" mc says softly chuckling at the male who scrunched up his face from the sun that got in through the curtains.
"hm.....I was too cold, and I couldn't hear your heartbeat well because of the shirt" sonny explained in a quiet voice giving mc puppy dog eyes as he pressed a soft kiss to their neck.
"I'm not mad at you, just surprised love" mc says smiling softly at the boy who smiled going back to nuzzled against mc.
"it's pretty comfy here too" sonny said his warm hand rubbing against Mc's bare stomach as the male yawned once more.
Mc chuckled their cheeks growing a soft shade of red from the male's actions as he got comfortable his legs tangling with Mc's.
"baby, we don't have to get up right I'm too comfy to move, and we don't have to be anywhere let's be lazy for a little bit" sonny says a pout forming on his face when he thought about getting up.
"of course my love, we can cuddle all you want I'm still sleepy too so I don't mind at all" mc says as sonny's lips formed into a wide smile as he moved his head to get out from the neck hole pressing a soft kiss against Mc's lips before going back inside getting comfortable.
"thankfully this shirt is oversized or you would've ripped it baby" mc says chuckling as sonny hummed feeling content moving his hand to hold Mc's hand interwining his fingers with Mc's.
After a few minutes they both fell back asleep enjoying their lazy warm morning together in each other's arms.
