Character Study
I wanted to work more on studying my two characters (Jekyll and Hyde), studying their environment and their relationships within their community.
I wrote down couple of questions about the characters for me to answer. I thought it would be great to get through them before I start drafting my script.
in terms of what are the characters surrounded with, I already covered that before talking about the shape of their houses, the animals and trees they have and all the other resources in the area. But now I want to talk about how the character feels about it! Jekyll loves the simplicity of his world. He used to feel so safe growing his son in a community that believes in love and love only. He also carries all the tribe believes that I already talked about before. Jekyll relationship with his trees has always been something very special. He used to walk between then, talk to them and in a rough day maybe even hug them and believe that will heel him from the inside. He believed that when his trees feel his love they will grow faster, healthier and give lots of fruits.
Now I want to look into his relationships with other people. He lost his wife when she gave the birth to his son. His son means the world to him. He taught him everything about taking care of the trees knowing that once he died everything will be taken care of by his only son. Jekyll used be the wisest man in his community because he had the longest beard of all of them. This is something that meant a lot to him. He felt very valuable when the people of his community always come to him for advice.
Losing all of this in the story (his trees getting burnt, the murder of his only son and him taking the decision of cutting his own beard) pushes Jekyll to his extreme to be Hyde. Because he lost all what he cared about and all what reminds him of him self and his tribe’s believes as his tribe was displaced (after killing most of them) after the attack of the other tribe.
what dreams did he have before the horrible attack on his tribe happened? And what those dreams turned out to be afterwards?
his dream was like everyone else’s in the tribe. he wanted to live a free life when love was shared between everyone like how everything else was shared. He was very excited for his son to start growing his bread too when he grows up so he can be the wisest man of the community after his father. he wanted to see his trees and his son as happy as they deserve to be. despite everything inside his has always been guilt. He felt responsible for his wife’s death deep down. it is something that he has been hiding from himself and from everyone else.
After losing everything his dream turned out to be taking the revenge and killing whoever killed his son. deep down he was angry at himself as much as he was angry at the person who killed his son. He was feeling guilty for not being able to protect his son. This whole thing connected in his head with his wife’s death. So the amount of guilt he carries in his heart was really big. It made him blind. It made him cut his beard and forget who he is. But throughout the long journey he took to get to the house of the person who killed his son.. he started to forgive himself little by little. Until he got the knife on the neck of the person who killed his son. He realised that revenge has never been his dream. It is nothing like him. He realises that his dream at that point was to forgive and move on with his life. He wanted to feel the love and peace again.
As in my story the past and its thoughts controls the transformation of Jekyll and Hyde it was very important to study this past. And according to the questions I answered above I want to state what kind of thoughts specifically gets into Jekyll’s head to make him Hyde and the other way around. I ant to look into these thoughts, build them on what I know about his past and his relationships with the environment and the people then see how strong does the thought need to be to transform him into Hyde and how the thought made him feel.
From Jekyll to Hyde: Remembering his wife’s death. This makes him angry at himself and the killer of his on. because his wife died having his son he blames her death of the same things he blame his son’s death. So himself and the killer.
also when he escaped he manages to hide from the killing tribe in one of the big fields that they burnt. There he could be close enough to track the person who killed his son but far enough that they cannot easily find him. There he remembering how his trees were getting burnt and how he used to spend his days taking care of them and talking to them is one of the thoughts that makes him transform.
These thoughts generates there feelings: anger, guilt, madness, and sadness.
From Hyde to Jekyll: Remembering his tribe’s celebrations with the birds. He closes his eyes and starts hearing the music of them singing with the birds songs as if it is actually happening. He remembers how he used to dance with his son and the other members of the tribe in that celebration. They used to bend their arms and move them up and down while running quickly in a circle under the flying birds. He remembered how his son used to look at him and imitate him doing it. At that point he suddenly feels that he is back with time when everything was normal. He starts to feel the warmth of dancing and the freedom of the movement.
At the end when he gets the knife on the killer’s neck he looks to the right and he realises that his little young son is next to him looking scared of the Hyde. When he sees that tiny scared face, he remembers his son’s face. He has not talked to his son since he died. He felt so guilty to even look up at the blue sky and talk to him. But at that moment he felt that he was talking to him. He heard him in his head saying fly.. fly daddy. At that moment Jekyll looked at the knife he is carrying. It was passed to him from his ancestors. He noticed the birds were curved on it. Then he started to imagine them coming to life and flying around him as if he was actually at the celebration. At that point all his guilt was gone. He felt so warm. He realised that he has forgiven them for what they did. Because he wants to be happy and free again. He knows that this is what his wife and son would have wanted him to be too! he transform back into Jekyll and never gets to be Hyde anymore.
