i just understood something about denethor’s second-best complex and it's that when you have always been the second choice you either develop awful internalized self loathing or you become filled with bitter resentment against the entire world forever and ever. and he is so much the second option (lol. that was unintentional) that it physically pains me. he is just. his pride. his pride is so towering that i think the only possible interpretation is that he thinks that no one who has ever relegated him to second-best has ever understood him or his purpose or, later on in his life, his destined position to lead gondor into war. it only strengthens his resolve, not weakens it, but it festers long and deep and bitter.

it's not like he wants to BE anyone he's been compared to. he is exactly who he is and he is born and made and honed to the edge of the purpose he is facing. and the tragedy of it is that he has become less of himself, in meeting that need. to sharpen himself to a blade has meant carving away parts of himself too dear to survive. hey what's up with that. better to burn sooner than later for burn we must. better to make myself into a weapon rather than have the war take my softness from me. not understanding, blinded by pride and the desperate need for any sort of agency, that the end result will always be the same.

it could have been understanding, between him and faramir - to be someone who is not naturally suited to the times that they live in but going on, despite it. but instead he just recreates the cycle. because he is second-best again - to gandalf, to faramir's moral code - and he thinks you are most like me - how dare you not understand. there’s jealousy and resentment in saying that faramir wants to be a lord of old kingly wise gentle etc. because maybe once he wanted that, too, yet could not allow it for himself anymore. he is the only one that can be who he is, what he is, and so he has no other choice. doomed by his own self-image but like...is he wrong? augh.
