First off I wanted to thank to anyone who joined since we already reached 100+ members on our lovely server. We are hosting few events in that occassion but first off I will tell you more about server so maybe you will also join... if you want to skip add you can get link from clicking here

So first off who are we .ᐣ

We are rather yet small discord community who most common interest is in Critical Role / Vox Machina. You will find both show and compaign lovers on our server as well as different channels where you can share your content

Our journey started from me and my friend deciding why not to just start a discord server and connect more people who for various reasons couldn't purchase Beacon subscription to join the official community on discord server. We are here for those who want to socialize with people with similiar interest without having to pay because not everyone can afford that.

What do we offer ?

- Zone for sharing your own creations , if you want to join only to promote your content because you are too shy to interact it's fine <3

- Social zone where you can chat either about IRL topics , topics related to shows , talk about compaign without spoilering it to people who only watched the show , place to talk about different fandoms !

- Zone for roleplayers ! That's right we are writing in the univeree of the Exandria together - you can either take role of canon character or your own original characters !

- Active community which hosts events frequently , usually we are hosting them in Saturday because that's when most of us are available! ( Current incoming event this aaturday : Quizz , knowledge about the show from S1 to S3 )

- Minecraft Realm ! Yes. Yep. That too. Seriously, so long as it focuses on Perc'ahlia (and is appropriately tagged to avoid spoiling people), you can do it. Cosplay, inspired recipes, beadwork, podfic, go wild! How did you choose the prompts?

Prompts were selected by a combination of admin discussion and voting in our Discord server to try and ensure a good mix of evocative prompts. Following feedback from members and a poll, we added in some alternative prompts for people who don't click with the simple word pairs!

Why late September?

On September 29th, 2016, the Critical Role episode 'Passed Through Fire' aired, which features an iconic Perc'ahlia moment (no spoilers for show fans!). Following Burr's 2023 poll on which scene is most iconic for the pairing, we decided to have the week celebrate the anniversary of that episode. After season 3 of TLOVM aired in 2024, we added October 3rd (the day Vexations first aired) to the list as a notable day to celebrate! ;3

Is it okay if I only do one prompt?

This event is intended to be relaxed and fun - one entry, or seven, or fourteen, however many you want! We've tried to announce the event earlier this year, to allow for more time for everyone to work on their entries, so please don't feel pressured to do them all the week of. And if you can't finish on time, there's no pressure: late submissions will still be RB'd and added to the AO3 collection. Mind you, after a month or two we might stop checking the blog and tag regularly, so your best bet is to @ us or post in the Discord server!

In light of recent discussions about specific elements of the previous episode, I'm curious about how Beacon's introduction will impact online conversations and how Critical Role will integrate into the long-standing discussion about Canon interpretations, their differences with the Fanon, and the potential influence of the author's intent.

The history of fandom is full of these terms. Canon. Fanon. The Word of God. Death of the Author. Authorial Intent. Retroactive continuation. The possible contradictions that may arise between the various mediums in which an IP is distributed. At this point, it's a long etcetera.

How do we define "canon"? In the context of a fandom, canon refers to the source or sources that are considered official by the community. Right? It would be the content created or developed by the intellectual author of an original work, in whatever medium, that acts as the basis for its fans. In the case of Critical Role, that would be the main campaigns, to which one-shots within the universe could be added too. We can also add comics, novels, core books, animated series, games, and so on. However, there are contradictions between them, which is not unusual for an IP that is almost 10 years old and counting. So which ones prevail? Of those mentioned, only the VODs are publicly available (perhaps some of the rest are available through public libraries). I believe it's important to consider accessibility when weighing its potential influence in discussions. And the lines can sometimes be difficult to discern as to what fans accept as canon or not (for example, Keyleth's height as seen in Vox Machina Origins or The Legend of Vox Machina).

Conversely, fanon refers to any element that enjoys widespread acceptance among fans yet lacks a clear foundation within the canon. But what is the line that can separate some specific fanon from an ambiguous canon? How many people would need to agree for something to be considered part of Fanon? If a detail is only being hinted at or is easily inferred from the canon, but there is no tacit confirmation of it, its validity as canon may be in question for some.

Canon is what happened. Then, the interpretation ultimately rests with the individual viewer. This also brings me to the question of the author's intention, which refers to the personal canon of the creator of the work in question. In the case of Critical Role, until very recently, the main sources for this were Talks Machina and 4-Sided Dive. Subsequently, convention Q&A panels, interviews with various media outlets, Fireside chats, and the cast's responses through their personal social media accounts, to a lesser extent. Most of these instances are public. And comments made during these instances can lead to being established as fanons and being accepted so widely that there is not much distinction between them and being "canon." However, these instances still occur outside of the official canon.

There are several positions on this matter, starting with the "Word of God," where a person considered the highest authority in relation to the work makes a statement about an ambiguous or undefined aspect of it, but outside the official medium in which it has been published. And there are detractors who say that the interpretation of a work of fiction cannot be limited to the mere discernment of its author's intentions (for example, Wimsatt and Beardsley with "The Intentional Fallacy" or Barthes with "The Death of the Author").

And with all of the above, I'm not looking to argue in favor of any specific vision, but it's something I've been thinking about since the introduction of Beacon and now when seeing the details of Critical Role's weekly schedule.

Beacon introduced CR Cooldown; there are occasional answers to fan questions asked on their server; and an AMA will be held this week on the official Discord. Unless there are "leaks," the information in those instances (and future ones related to the platform) is not publicly accessible. How much weight will fans give to that information? How will this impact conversations about "canon" and what's publicly available?

I don't know; they're just unfinished thoughts from someone who likes to read CR meta posts.

I say go for it, we're doing this for fun, but remember that no language, dialect, or accent is superior or more intellectual than any other (and at least bother to look up good 'best language A to language B translators' because they deserve better than Google Translate). In something you're doing in a professional capacity, definitely have someone else who speaks the language double check it, or translate the lines, for you. I think every language in the world has its own niche where it can just express something more beautifully or in a different way than any other dialect can.

...I started writing fanfiction in grade school so I genuinely don't remember. First fandom I posted something for was Blue Exorcist, I think? That was... about a decade ago now.

if this is asking about untranslated languages different than the fic's primary language being used, complicated!!! i think it's important to remember that language and how we perceive it is super important!! i think it's important to remember that sometimes, when you think you're phonetically writing out what you think of as just an accent, you're actually taking bits and pieces from a dialect that deserves to be researched more in depth so as to treat it with respect!! the line between a dialect and a language, from my understanding, can be drawn and is often used to discriminate against marginalized communities so when asked about mixed language dialogue, it's a deeper question than I think might be expected!!! and as a batman fan, you know I have to raise the question of sign language!! At the end of the day, I know very little, and think that I would probably just defer to people who know other languages, but the one thing I do know is that if there is a different language being used, it should be treated with respect!!!

We've tried to announce the event earlier this year, to allow for more time for everyone to work on their entries, so please don't feel pressured to do them all the week of. And if you can't finish on time, there's no pressure: late submissions will still be RB'd and added to the AO3 collection. Mind you, after a month or two we might stop checking the blog and tag regularly, so your best bet is to @ us or post in the Discord server!

We have set up a little server for this event on Discord, mostly to hang out with other Perc'ahlia fans and motivate eachother to work on our respective projects. The current link is HERE - let us know if it's not working!
