Gummi Venture

Part 5: The King’s Contest

Venture had been gone long enough from the glen that summer had disappeared from the woods and autumn was already bearing her final colors. The air was no longer warm and dry, instead it had become brisk and biting. With only the slightest provocation it pulled dried leaves from the gently swaying trees. Zummi wrapped his cloak more tightly around his neck and shoulders as he looked up to the early evening sky. The sunlight was fading now, but it left a canvas of bright pinks, oranges and emerging violets in its wake.

“Beautiful.” He said quietly to himself.

He stayed where he was, with his short legs dangling in the crisp air, sitting on a limb of the gummi tree overlooking the forest canopy below. This was a spot he often came, where he could relax and get lost in the natural beauty of the forest. Despite the falling leaves from the trees surrounding the glen, the gummi tree, steeped in magics as it was would be the last to drop its own, and the first come springtime to replenish them.

The old bear sighed and adjusted his spectacles on the top of his snout. His green friend had said he planned to be back before the first snow of winter, but it seemed less and less likely that it would be the case. Zummi watched as the color slowly drained from the sky, and when the air became too chilly, he gathered himself up and strode the length of the large branch to a small round door hidden away in the trunk. As he reached for the knob, it opened suddenly outward, catching him by surprise.

“Oh! Zummi, here you are!” Said Sunni as she blinked up at him with wide, youthful eyes.

“Sunni!” Exclaimed the magician. “You just about lared the scife out of me, er, well scared the life!”

She giggled and pushed a long tuft of yellow fur out of her face. “I didn’t mean to! You were up here so long I started to get worried, that and Gruffi wants to see you.”

“Gruffi? Oh, that’s fine. Is he in his room, or the den?” Zummi asked.

“Um, the den.” Sunni said and nodded.

“Thank you for letting me know.” Said the purple gummi as he moved with Sunni into the tree’s upper passageway before shutting the door behind them.

“Was it a nice sunset tonight?” Asked Sunni while they walked.

“Oh yes, quite lovely.”

“You’ve been up there a lot lately haven’t you?”

“It’s a good place to sit and have a think.” Zummi explained.

“About what?”

Zummi chuckled at the girl’s inquisitive nature. “Oh I don’t know, this and that. I’ve been hoping the Great Book of Gummi might reveal a new spell to us, but it’s been still for a long time now.”

“When did the last spell show up?”

Zummi scratched his chin in thought. “Perhaps half a year or more? I’ve nearly memorized all the magics the book contains by this point, still trying to find something that could help Venture’s friends, but nothing seems quite right.”

Sunni nodded her understanding. “They’ll be okay, I know they will. If they can be turned to stone, they can be turned back.” She offered with a smile.

“I think so too.” Zummi smiled back, patting the younger bear on her shoulder.

They continued down the winding passageway which ran in a tight descending spiral throughout the massive tree trunk until they reached the underground, where carved-out wood walls and floor gave way to earth and stone. Within another minute or so they would reach the den, the gathering hub for the Gummi Glen family.

“Do you know what Gruffi needs from me?” Zummi asked presently.

“Hm? Oh, uh, I can’t remember.” Sunni said, with a sort of mischievous smirk on her face.

“What’s with the look?” Asked Zummi.

“Maybe Gruffi didn’t really ask me to come find you. Maybe I just needed an excuse to get you down here.”

Zummi gave her a bemused expression.

Just ahead they could hear excited voices. It sounded as though most of the others were already there, perhaps playing board games or enjoying hot cocoa around the hearth?

As the two bears rounded the last bend of the hallway and entered the spacious den, Zummi felt his heart beat a little faster. It looked as though all of the others were here alright, chatting excitedly, laughing and clustered around a certain gummi bear.

“Venture! You’re back!” Zummi all but shouted as he made his way into the crowd.

“Zummi! Good to see you! I’m pretty sure I said I’d be back before it snows, didn’t I? So here I am!” Said Venture as he gently pushed past Tummi and Cubbi to embrace his friend.

“Well, yes, but, it’s very nearly that time of year already.” Said Zummi as he patted the green gummi on the back while they hugged.

“Come on now, I still made it. Hope you weren’t too worried about me.” Said Venture with a teasing grin.

Zummi hesitated a moment as they pulled apart. “Not, too worried.” He said.

“He’s been working on helping your friends the whole time you’ve been away!” Sunni chimed in as she also greeted Venture with a warm hug.

“I believe it.” Said Venture, smiling with appreciation at the magician.

“What else could I do?” Said Zummi.

Grammi cleared her throat and spoke above the others. “Plenty of time to catch up everyone, but let’s allow the poor dear time to get little settled first, and maybe some food in his belly!”

“Oh gee, anything to eat at all would be amazing.” Said Venture. “Thank you, Grammi.”

She ushered him over to the long banquet table that sat in the middle of the room, expertly carved from old logs. He took a seat near the middle and the other gummis bunched up around him.

“Where did you go this time?” Asked Cubbi as he hopped onto the left side of the bench where Venture sat.

“Was it scary?” Tummi wondered.

“Did you, find any leads? Not that I care one way or the other.” Gruffi grumbled as he tightly folded his arms over his chest.

“How long will you be back for?” Asked Zummi as he seated himself on the long bench to Venture’s right.

The green gummi laughed and unfastened his cloak which he carefully stowed in the bag of holding at his belt.

“Okay, okay, one at a time! Cubbi, I went to the south, a land of swamps and wetlands, it was murder on the fur. I had heard some local legends about a peculiar witch who lived out in the bogs who knew about petrification magic so I did my best to find her. To answer your question Tummi, yes, sometimes it was pretty frightening! There were serpents in the swamps that grew to some thirty feet in length and would have loved to have made a meal of me! Honestly, from time to time I miss having an ogre’s size. I found the witch’s hut, but it was falling to pieces and I suppose she was long dead or moved away. I searched the rest of the area, spoke to the nonhumans that I could find, and eavesdropped on the humans I came across. None of that seemed to pan out. And by then it was time to return to the glen. On the journey back however, to answer your question Gruffi, I heard a rumor about a nobleman, a collector of artifacts specifically who lives nearby, in the kingdom of Dunwyn.”

“Why is this nobleman important?” Asked Cubbi.

“Well, what I overheard was he has a particular interest in relics from the Sandibas region and has amassed quite the collection. Perhaps, he holds a clue from my time that could help. I know it’s a long shot, but it’s something to go on at least.”

He turned his head to look at Zummi. “As for how long I’ll be staying, I’d really like to follow up on this antiques collector before winter hits us. But after that, I suspect I’ll want to stick around for awhile, until it gets warm again. After all, bears hibernate in the winter right?”

“Not gummi bears!” Said Cubbi, quite oblivious to Venture’s joke.

“So a few months then.” Said Zummi. He appeared relieved, though perhaps a little disappointed too.

Grammi brought out a hearty seeded bread with butter, a steaming squash and vegetable soup, and a raspberry custard tart for dessert and set them down in front of Venture. The bearded bear looked almost like he might burst into tears.

“This looks too good! I haven’t eaten this well since, well since I was back here! Thank you so much!” He said sincerely.

She gave him a satisfied smirk. “Well I’d hate to think you were getting food half as good as this out in some swamp!” She said.

Venture finished his meal and the group continued to speak long into the night until the younger bears began to yawn at the late hour.

The green gummi couldn’t help but stifle a yawn himself.

“After the trek you’ve had today, I think it’s about time we got you settled back into your old room.” Suggested Zummi.

“I wanted to hear more about the serpents and poisonous toads!” Said Cubbi.

“I’ll still be here in the morning ya know!” Said Venture as he rose to his feet.

“Fiiine.” Said Cubbi, and then he brightened. “You wanna help me and Sunni with our morning chores? They won’t take long, and you can tell us more stories!”

“Looking forward to it.” Venture said.

“Good to have you back.” Said Gusto, as he got up from the table and bade everyone a good night.

“Yes, you know you always have a place here, sweetie.” Added Grammi.

“Thanks everyone.” Said Venture, who blushed under the green fur of his cheeks. “It’s nice to be back.”

“May I walk with you?” Asked Zummi after the others had cleared out of the den.

“Of course.”

The two headed into the long corridor just outside of the den that led further down to the sleeping chambers.

“We missed you around here.” Said the purple bear.

“It sure seems that way. It’s… a little overwhelming being fussed over on my return like this.”

“They’re just showing their fondness for you.” Said Zummi.

“Oh, I know, I didn’t mean that… I meant,” Venture paused. “I’m overwhelmed to, have people to come home to again.”

Zummi patted Venture’s back as they walked, and thought he saw a glint of moisture at the corner of his friend’s eye, before it was quickly wiped away.

They reached Venture’s room, the door next to Zummi’s and went inside. Venture reached up to the apple-sized light sphere affixed to the wall and touched it softly with his paw. The orb slowly came to life, bathing the room in a warm glow. Each of the rooms had such spheres, a simple magic enchantment Zummi had used to light the great structure many years ago. Each light would remain lit, by using a tiny amount of ambient magical energy until touched again. They were incredibly handy, and much more practical than torches or lanterns.

“Wow, this place looks just the same.” Said Venture as he glanced around. “Actually I take it back, it looks cleaner than I remember.”

“Well, I didn’t want the place collecting dust in your absence.”

“You’ve been keeping my room clean for me?”

Zummi shrugged. “Just once a week, I’ll pop in and tidy. Not a dig beal.”

“There it is.” Grinned Venture.

“Big deal!” Zummi corrected himself.

“Well I appreciate it, you’re always so thoughtful.” Said Venture.

Zummi blushed at the compliment. “It was really nothing. But listen, I’d love to write down some more of your experiences, like before, if you have the time.”

“What, like right now?”

“N-no of course not! Whenever you want, if you have some time before you leave for Dunwyn.”

“Well, what about tomorrow night then?” Venture offered.

“That’s wonderful, let’s plan for tomorrow around sundown? Just pop over and I’ll be all set!” Said Zummi happily.

“Sounds like a plan.” Venture agreed. “Then I’ll say good night for now, and see you tomorrow.”

“Oh, good night Venture, and,” Zummi scratched at the scruff of his neck. “It is good to have you back. We’re, all very fond of you.”

“And you know I feel the same about you guys.”

“Sleep well.” Said Zummi before leaving the room and softly shutting the door on his way out.

Venture moved over to the small bed and practically collapsed onto the mattress. The frame creaked slightly under his weight. The gummi had expected he might stay up for a time, unpacking some items from his bag, getting situated again, but after being on the road the last few weeks, he was so exhausted that he fell asleep almost immediately.

The following day was the most relaxed that Venture could remember having in quite some time. He helped Sunni and Cubbi collect firewood in the morning as promised, and afterwards they lay in the long grass of the grove and deciphered shapes in the clouds. He enjoyed a nice lunch in the afternoon with Grammi, Tummi and Gusto, and even found an hour to catch up with Sir Thornberry who had apparently moved himself into the armory on the lowest level of the glen. He learned that Gritty had returned to his native gummi homeland of Ursalia, but Thornberry was becoming quite fond of the glen and would be staying indefinitely. The green gummi expected he would feel restless after the months away, but instead he felt like he was back where he belonged. The feeling made him a bit uneasy.

The gummi bears all gathered in the den for supper which Grammi and Tummi had prepared for everyone. Venture followed up with Zummi about meeting later as discussed while Cubbi wrinkled up his nose and did his best to hide the mushrooms on his plate from Grammi under a dinner roll.

Again the meal was delightful, and afterwards Venture took some time to unpack a few belongings from the bag of holding into his room. He lined the shelves with a couple of books he had begun reading on his travels alongside the maps he had been using. When he was finished he touched the light sphere on the wall and went into the hallway. A few moments later he was knocking at the door next to his own.

Zummi carefully poured two cups of gummiberry tea and set them onto a clattery copper tray. The tea was good for the mind and body, refreshing, though not nearly as potent as its counterpart: gummiberry juice. He smelled the wonderful, warm aroma rising from the teacups as he lifted the tray with both paws and took it over to the nearby table where Venture sat.

“Mmm.” Said the green bear, sniffing the tea as he lifted the cup closest to him. “You make the best tea in all the realm, I swear.” He said.

“You have visited much of the realm, haven’t you? Perhaps I shall just take the compliment then.” Zummi said with a smile. He lifted his own teacup and carefully set it aside.

He was very happy to spend a quiet evening speaking with his friend. It had only been four and a half months since he had first met Venture, on that fateful, if tumultuous day. Since that time, the green bear had only stayed in Gummi Glen for three short weeks. Then he was gone, continuing the journey to find aid for his friends. Just like in those weeks before, the two arranged a night to relax and converse, which Zummi found to be a doubly good opportunity to get more of his friend’s incredible history down on paper. From the wooden table next to him, he gathered up a canvas-bound notebook and retrieved an ink quill with its jar.

“Are you wanting to write anything in particular tonight?” Venture asked, craning from his side of the table to see the book.

“In fact, I’d like to get another one of your stories written down, if you’d care to spare the time.” Zummi said, looking over his glasses at the bear sitting across from him.

“Oh, I’ll always make time for you, not that I had any other plans tonight anyway.” The bearded gummi said. “So, something specific? A bit more about what you call ‘the Great Gummi’ culture from centuries ago? Something from my wandering years as an ogre?”

Zummi blew some steam from the top of his cup and then took a tentative sip of the hot beverage. “Your choice. Anything you would like to have written down for pummi gosterity, uh, gummi posterity?”

Venture took a sip from his own cup while he thought about the magician’s request. “Oh, that is good, not too strong, just perfect.”

“Thank you kindly.” Said Zummi.

“Hmm, I know I’ve told you about the night we vanquished the sorceress, but have I told you yet about how the team was formed?” Asked Venture, raising a fuzzy eyebrow.

“You have not.” Said Zummi, offering a curious look. “But please do, I’m all ears.” He readied his quill at the top of a fresh page.

“Let me think.” Venture said as he began his tale. “I was still a cub at the time, around fourteen or fifteen, living with my grandfather in his general store. He was getting up there in age, as he often reminded me, so he had gifted me our family heirloom, the bag of holding for my birthday. That’s right, for my fifteenth birthday, that checks out. Anyway, Gummiton was bustling on that particular morning, more so than usual. And you have to remember, we had opened our town and lands to the displaced humans from the kingdom of Serenade, so Gummiton in those years after the sorceress had forced them out was especially crowded. Sorry, I should try to stick to the main story.”

“It’s fine, my shorthand is up to the task.” Zummi assured his companion.

“Great, well, where was I? Oh yes, everyone in town was acting like they had a special secret to share.”

Maddi came by Grandpa’s store in the morning, like she did almost every day. She had this huge grin on her face, stretching from ear to ear. She was seven years older than me and a lot more interesting, adventurous, and brazen too. Maddi was amazing, I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. She was just like my big sister, even called me her little brother sometimes. I had known her my whole life, our parents used to be friends.

“Hey Venture, how’s business?” The burgundy-colored bear asked as she leaned against the front counter of the shop.

“Fine, we sold a bunch of knitted scarves to the humans. The nights just started getting colder recently so Grandpa figured it was a good idea to have them in stock.” I told her.

“Sad to see Summer coming to an end. That’s smart though, I mean, they don’t have any fur, they gotta be cold all the time, right? Must be annoying.” She said.

“I guess.” I said.

“Anyway, whatever, I’m not really here for that.”

“I figured. So what’s up?” I asked her as I tidied up one of the display shelves of buttons, needles and colored thread spools.

“You haven’t heard the news?”

“No. what news?” I asked.

“Whole town’s talking about it.” She said.

“About what?”

“Wow, you are seriously clueless.”

“Maddi, come on! Just tell me already!” I snapped.

She smirked. “Geez, calm down, if you want to know that bad I’ll tell you.”

I rolled my eyes.

“So yeah, the human king sent out a request, he’s looking for people.” She told me.

“What for?”

“They’re calling it ‘The King’s Contest.’”

“Well that doesn’t explain too much.” I said and grimaced. “What kind of contest?”

“He wants to find people with skills, who can fight. He’s hosting a tournament in three days.” Maddi said.

“Whoa, that sounds exciting!” I exclaimed. “How do you know all this?”

She pulled a carefully folded sheet of paper from the yellow sash around her waist and handed it to me. “This is how.”

I unfolded it and saw it was a flier, presumably one of many that had been posted around Gummiton and the more recent human settlement of New Serenade earlier that morning. Quickly I scanned over the information before giving it back.

“That’s really gonna be something to see.” I said and whistled.

“I’m going to enter.” Maddi told me proudly, tossing her long, single braid of hair back over her shoulder.

“Is it even open to gummi bears?”

She scrunched up her face. “Why wouldn’t it be? It doesn’t say ‘humans only’ or anything on it, does it?”

“No.”

“So then, of course I’m going to enter, and I plan to be one of the winners too!”

“It’s just, humans are so big and powerful, what if you get hurt?” I said.

Her expression softened. “Don’t worry about me, little brother. I’m quick, they won’t even lay a finger on me. Besides, that old king wants the best, and it’s going to be me for sure.”

“Will I be able to see you participate?” I asked.

“Obviously. I can only do my best if you’re there cheering me on.” She said and fluffed up my hair with her paw.

Gummiton was beyond excited over the next few days leading up to the tournament. It was surprising to pass anyone on the street who wasn’t talking about it, though to be fair there usually wasn’t much else going on, at least not on such a grand scale. By that time, the top rumors were that the king wanted to host the event for morale, find a team to be his new royal guard, or make a strike force to defeat the sorceress. They all seemed equally preposterous and plausible. Unfortunately for me however, I was scheduled to mind the store on the day of the contest while my grandfather traveled just out of town into the forest to gather berries and herbs to dry and sell.

I suppose I should say a couple of things about Grandpa at this point: The gummi was strict, not overly harsh necessarily, but he had his rules and expected them to be followed. The other thing was, he liked to stay up late with his pipe and a book in the evening and sleep late in the mornings, which almost always meant I had to open the shop. So on the day of the tournament, I wrote him a note, apologizing that I had something urgent to do that I deemed more important than opening the store. I left it on his nightstand next to the snoring bear, said a quiet ‘goodbye’ and then headed out for the day.

The contest grounds were set up just outside of Gummiton, in a large clearing at the edge of the Honeypaw woods, where there was enough space for all the festivities. Some of the town carpenters had constructed wooden stands for spectators, and roped off rings for individual battles. There were even benches and seating areas in some of the trees, obviously being more for the gummi bears who could easily get to them. The area was completely transformed from the meadow it had previously been. Somehow, in just three days there had been time for many local businesses to set up stands with food and drink as well as a few game booths like I had seen and played before at a human’s carnival when I was very young. I felt my stomach rumble as I looked over some small cakes and sweet buns at a baker’s stall. The smell of cooked sugar and spices was nearly overwhelming to my sensitive nose, but in a wonderful way. I had told Grandpa we should do something similar, but he wasn’t much for the idea. Maybe he just didn’t understand how many people would be in attendance.

I continued through the rows of booths until I reached the largest fight ring designated for the main events. It was the most impressive due to its sheer size as well as knowing it was where the final matches would take place. It was wider and had tall, waving banners surrounding it flying the colors of New Serenade and Gummiton respectively. For now there was no one competing here, although a few people were already making themselves comfortable to have good viewing later in the day. Behind and above the ring in sturdier-looking stands were the nicer seats for the human’s king Josef, his family, and the gummi elders. There were also padded seats for advisors, probably some other people too, but basically, the most important folks from both settlements.

I found Maddi about an hour after I arrived, she was just finishing a match, which she won. She was beaming, waving at folks, talking to some others. When she saw me though she ran right over.

“Hey! There you are! You missed my first fight!”

“I’m sorry, I wanted to leave sooner, but I almost didn’t… I think Grandpa’s gonna be really upset when he finds out.” I told her, still feeling guilty.

“Hey, this tournament’s a big deal, he’ll understand. They say it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission, you know.” She said, tying her yellow bandana more tightly at the back of her head.

I frowned. “That seems subjective.”

“Whatever, anyway, I got my first win!” She said, grabbing me by the shoulders and shaking me. She laughed like a crazy person. I couldn’t help laughing with her.

“Congratulations! Was it a close match?” I asked her.

She shook her head. “Nah. I was too quick, besides, with these rules it was a piece of cake!”

“Oh? What do you mean?” I asked.

“I told you already, Venture. We’re not trying to kill each other or anything. You just need to knock your opponent down three times, or get them out of the ring. You can use weapons, but absolutely no lethal attacks.” She reminded me.

“I know all that! I meant, how did you win?” I asked.

“Just outmaneuvered him, tripped him up a few times. No sweat.” She flexed her arm for me and grinned.

“There actually is some sweat on your forehead, Maddi.” I said and pointed.

“Haha, you bratty little cub!” She shouted and grabbed me in a headlock. We both laughed again.

I stuck by my sister for the rest of the day and was able to watch her next match from the sidelines, which she also won, with relative ease. She was even faster than I remembered. She had spent years training for the Gummi Guard, so it made sense that she would be in peak physical condition. Of course, there were plenty of gummis also trained to join the guard, and several of them were in attendance, but I doubted they had Maddi’s grit and determination. I had heard her mother, Clover, remark that if Maddi had been born a human she’d have her own queendom by now. When Maddi was in a battle, the way she read her opponent’s moves, reacted so quickly and effortlessly, seemed to be pure instinct on her part. You could see her opponents calculating strategies in their heads, but Maddi had already tripped them up or disarmed them before they could act. Her third match of the day was in the finals, which meant, if she won, she would be one of those deemed worthy by King Josef. As the number of participants dictated, only three would be counted as champions.

While she was preparing for her last match, I was able to catch some of the other finalists’ bouts. The first of them featured the most physically imposing swordsman I had ever seen. He was enormous, with a midsection shaped like a pickle barrel and a golden moustache wider than his head! He faced off against against a smaller, though capable swordfighter. The big fellow moved with purpose, deflecting his attacker’s assault with little shrugs, it seemed, letting the sword glance off his shining silver plate armor. The giant man had a sword himself, an impressive broadsword, but at that point in the fight it was being used more as a shield than a weapon. He was just sizing his opponent up, gauging his battle style before actually going on the offensive. It was clear to everyone watching who the victor would be just based on the sheer size and strength of the man, but what was actually surprising was that his attacks were incredibly fast. It seemed, with the added weight of the huge blade and armor, he should be sluggish, but nothing could be further from the truth. The golden-haired man began to use the two-handed sword in earnest then, but avoided slicing with its sharp edges entirely, otherwise I expect he could have cut his opponent in two. He won the match easily, using the flat side of his blade to lift his opponent into the air before hurling him out of the ring. The crowd applauded and cheered, “Osric, Osric, Osric!”

The second person to become a champion that day was also human, lean and quite plain-looking. He had long black hair that covered some of his face, tied into a small tail at the back and wore simple brown robes. The fellow announcing the fight said that his name was Talwyn, and he was the most gifted acolyte from the former mage’s academy in Serenade. These days he was also adding gummi magic to his repertoire, studying with Gummiton mystics and magicians. He battled a barbarian woman who fought with enormous claw weapons. The mage seemed to keep her at a distance easily enough, blowing her back with gusts of air from his staff. She roared and charged at him but Talwyn mired her with a mud spell, and while she struggled to pull herself free, began to summon a fireball in the air above his unassuming wooden staff. As the flames grew in size, you could see the hesitation in his opponent. The air over the ring began to heat up, and I could feel its unnatural warmth on my skin. All eyes were glued to the glowing crimson sphere as it rotated in space and grew in size. When the fireball was as wide across as a wagon wheel, and close to being launched, the barbarian admitted defeat. I can’t say that I blamed her. The crowd expressed some disappointment at the anticlimactic end of the duel. I’ll admit I had wanted to see what that fireball could do too.

As fate would have it, the very last final match of the day was between Maddi and a tall human named Bernard who strutted about the ring in a reddish-brown long coat. The man appeared fierce, with fiery crimson hair that flowed into an equally wild beard. The fight judge had the two shake hands as the match was about to start.

I heard people behind me whispering, “What a handsome rogue he is! I hope he isn’t too hard on that little gummi bear!”

“Rogue is right, you know he’s one of those sailors from Glassport don’t you?” Said someone else.

I didn’t know much about the place, only that it was, as the name suggested, a port town many miles away, and also that the folks who traveled through and did business there didn’t have the best of reputations.

Like the previous finals, this one was being held in the larger ring in front of the royal stands and the crowd was dense with spectators. I climbed the narrow stairs into the raised common seating area and pushed through some onlookers, attempting to get a better view. Bernard used a bo staff, because it was most like a trident. Apparently he was also a fisherman from the lands he hailed from and was accustomed to the range and feel of the weapon. He was well trained like Osric, but in a very different style, and I could tell that Maddi was having real difficulty for the first time that day. She was still faster, and obviously a much smaller target, but I could tell Bernard had fought alongside or perhaps with gummi bears, so he knew what he was doing. Maddi bounded over and around him, testing his strike range with the long staff, though I could tell he was learning hers at the same time. It was several minutes before either of them got a knockdown, and I gasped when Maddi was the one to end up face down in the dirt. She got back up, and they circled each other.

“Apologies lass, this is just a game after all.” Said Bernard with a gruff, accented voice as he expertly twirled his bo in one hand. “But I do play to win.” He grinned so wide I could see a shine of gold from one of his teeth.

Maddi patted her face with her paws, getting the dirt off before she responded. “Don’t worry about me any, nothing I can’t handle.”

“Good to know.” He said. “I’d be insulted to think you made it to the finals by accident.”

Maddi just smirked.

Her movements didn’t look quite as sure as before, as she was being more defensive now. The only weapon she carried was a small dagger sheathed at her sash belt, but I didn’t see how it would do her any good in this match. No lethal attacks allowed, not that Maddi would ever take someone’s life, and nothing that would permanently injure the man either. She bounded over him, I suspect to land on his head and use her weight to force him to the ground, but he seemed to be waiting for that, stepping out from under her before she landed and pummeling her with the staff, scoring his second knockdown. In fact, the hit very nearly sent my sister out of the ring. There was a collective gasp from the spectators.

“Come on, Maddi, come on…” I said under my breath as I watched.

“That’s two knockdowns now.” Said Bernard cooly. He stood back, taking a relaxed stance and hooked a thumb over his large silver belt buckle. I knew enough to realize that his nonchalant act was meant to rattle my sister. He didn’t know her like I did though. She always did her best work when she felt the pressure of a challenge.

“Not sure what you’ve heard about gummi bears, but we all know how to count, thanks.” Said Maddi. She hopped back to her feet and tossed her braid over her shoulder.

“Well that’s good! We only have to get to three after all.” Bernard said and chuckled.

From where I stood I couldn’t see as much of the fight as I wanted to. The humans in front of me were standing and crowding the wooden railing, so I could only see through their legs. I had to get a better view so I began to make my way to the very front of the wooden platform, maybe four meters above the fighting ring below.

Maddi and Bernard engaged one another again and again. With the weapon, he just had too much coverage and reach to his advantage. Given the inherent differences in our species, Maddi didn’t have the strength needed to disarm him either. This only left one option available to her: cunning. The burgundy gummi came in from the sailor’s side, waiting for his inevitable sweep. When it came, she slid under it, tipping her head back and letting her long braid trail out behind her as the staff whooshed over her face. I couldn’t help but cry out, if his hit had connected she would really have been hurt. She withdrew the small dagger from her belt in an instant as she moved, ending her slide just behind the man after passing right through his legs. She leapt up from the ground, leaving a small dust cloud, slashing the dagger carefully. I couldn’t see what exactly she had done, but it was apparent a moment later when the fisherman’s heavy leather belt and trousers suddenly slipped down to his knees. He instinctively reached down to pull them back up while Maddi jumped and kicked him in the small of the back, forcing him to the ground. Now it was one knockdown to two. The crowd roared with laughter at the unexpected turn of events. Bernard got up again, embarrassed, and was now forced to hold his trousers up, leaving him to fight with only one hand. It wasn’t difficult for Maddi to take the upper hand and score the next knockdown on her unbalanced opponent.

“That was a dirty trick!” Snarled the flustered man.

Maddi shrugged. “It’s just a game, but like you said, I play to win too.” She told him.

She bounced over him, avoided his awkward strike easily and landed on his shoulder blades. She scored her third knockdown. The spectators went wild. Even the king and gummi elders applauded excitedly from their vantage point. Bernard for his part, tried to stand tall after his defeat, red-faced though he was.

“So this is what was more important than minding the shop today?” Came a gravelly voice from behind me. I knew it all too well and immediately broke out in a nervous sweat.

With the events of the afternoon, I had completely forgotten about Grandpa, hadn’t even considered that he might come looking for me. Now, hearing that stern tone made the fur at the back of my neck stand up and I felt like a cub who had been caught with his paw in the cookie jar.

“Gr-Grandpa! I can explain!” I started to say automatically, but in my haste as I turned to face him, I was bumped by a human next to me and lost my balance. The collision sent me tumbling back against the wooden guardrail of the stands. Unfortunately for me, the wooden slats were high and wide apart, so a cub my size could slip right between them, which I did. I just had time to see the look of surprise on my grandfather’s face as I fell from the tall platform.

The drop was dizzying, but I had the presence of mind to pull my limbs in and cover my head. Gummi bears are naturally bouncy so though I knew the fall could do some damage, it wasn’t life-threatening. What I hadn’t realized however, was that I was directly above Maddi’s humiliated opponent, Bernard the sailor.

Bernard yelped as a small green bear crashed into him from above, with enough force to knock him to his knees and force him to drop his pants yet again. I bounced safely off of him and rolled some distance away before getting to my feet, dusted myself off and stood before the man. I was about to ask him if he was alright, and apologize, but his face told me my best bet might just be to flee.

“You blasted gummis! Think you can just embarrass me like this and get away with it?” He said with an angry snort. He still struggled to keep his britches up over his underwear as he found his feet and brandished his weapon.

I quickly glanced around me. Maddi had already been escorted away by one of the contest judges, Grandpa was high above me in the stands, and a bunch of onlookers had begun crowding around us, as if they thought another match was starting.

“Hey look!” Someone shouted. “Bernard’s fighting another gummi!”

“Guess he didn’t learn his lesson last time!” Someone rejoined. There was laughter.

Bernard’s face was perhaps even redder than his hair. He charged me, bo staff drawn, and he obviously meant to use it. Unlike my fall, this would undoubtedly leave a mark. I tried to run from the large roped-off arena but a tall human man reached down and forcibly shoved me back. Behind me, the humiliated fisherman roared. I was panicked and terrified.

“Venture, hey, boy!” I could just hear my Grandpa’s voice over the din of the crowd. I looked up into the stands and saw his familiar bearded face. “Use your bag!” He indicated the simple coinpurse at his waist and it took me a moment to catch his meaning.

I reached down and took my own pouch, the bag of holding, from my rope belt. Grandpa had shown me how it worked of course, so I knew all of its practical applications, so why did he want me to use it now?

The enraged sailor swung wildly, and natural instinct took over as I dived out of the way of the weapon while it swung past me. It struck the ground, sending a small shower of grit and pebbles into the air. I gasped and opened the bag. If the old shopkeeper thought this thing could help me, he was probably right.

“Can’t even win against a little cub!” Scoffed a bystander.

Bernard lunged at me.

I tugged the bag of holding wide open. I wasn’t even thinking about what I was doing. Bernard’s forward momentum took him right into the open mouth of the bag. The look on the man’s face as he stumbled into an impossibly-sized pouch, that was small only a moment ago was something to see. In the blink of an eye my assailant was gone. The roar of the crowd cut out almost immediately. They seemed as shocked as Bernard was by the turn of events. I surveyed the throng of onlookers surrounding me. They were nearly silent except for some confused whispers.

“Now say his name and let him out, boy!” I heard my Grandpa call down from above. So using the bag to store a person was just like with any other object. I understood now why my grandfather hadn’t shared this information with me, it could get a kid into a lot of trouble.

“Uh, what was his name again?” I asked the people around me. The thrill of the ordeal had momentarily made me forget.

“Bernard.” One of them told me.

“Oh right, Bernard!” I said after opening the bag up again.

The red-haired fellow suddenly sprouted from the magical pouch, tumbling forward, weapon still in hand. He sat on the ground near the edge of the ring, quite baffled judging from his expression.

“Sorry about that, and about landing on your head earlier.” I told him.

“Um, that’s alright lad.” He said quietly. For the time being at least, his anger was replaced by confusion.

The crowd, as intrigued as they had been a few moments earlier began to disperse once the action was over. Grandpa made his way down from the wooden viewing platform and walked over to me. Even at nearly sixty years of age the olive-colored bear was quite intimidating to behold with his puffed-out chest, full beard and serious expression.

“I’m sorry, it’s just that the contest was today and Maddi really wanted me to--” I began.

He held up a paw and I was silent. “Venture, you don’t need to explain, I understand perfectly well why you couldn’t miss today.” He said, his tone much more fair than I had been expecting.

“R-really?”

He nodded. “My boy, I’m not completely unreasonable. I was young once too, and I know most days there isn’t much going on in this town.” He huffed. “Though I suppose it’s more lively since the humans came to stay with us. My point is, you should have just told me.”

“Sorry Grandpa. I will next time.”

“The truth is, if you had reminded me last night about it I could have gone to bed earlier and opened the shop myself, maybe just done a half day. Besides, I wouldn’t have minded seeing more of the fights!” He added.

“’More?’” I asked.

He grinned. “I only saw a few but they were exciting, especially Maddi’s at the end there!”

“Yeah!” I said in agreement.

“That mage fellow’s fire spell?”

“I know, it was amazing!” I agreed.

“And you humbling that man with your bag was pretty entertaining too.” He said and gave me a wink.

I was going to ask him more about the bag’s capabilities, when two human soldiers, clad in blue and grey armor appeared next to us. We looked up at them.

“Excuse me, son.” One of the men who wore a reddish mustache said.

“You mean me?” I asked. It was fairly uncommon for a human to speak with me, except inside our store of course.

“Yes, you see, our King Josef has asked for an audience with you and the other winners of the contest.” He said.

I looked to my grandfather for help.

“That’s a mistake, my grandson here wasn’t part of the tourney, just got into a bit of an altercation afterwards with a pretty sore loser.” He explained.

“Be that as it may,” The other knight, a taller fellow with a dark goatee and scar over his eye said. “Our king has asked to speak with you, and it would be very rude to turn him down.”

I gulped, but the knight smiled down at me. My guess was to show me I wasn’t in any trouble, at least that was my hope. Regardless, my stomach began to knot itself.

Grandpa patted me on the back. “It’s alright Venture, let’s go see what the fellow has to say.”

I swallowed nervously but nodded my head. Two human knights were leading me away to meet their king, what did I have to be worried about?

The Bowl of Embers - What would be the title of your trial listed as in the duty-finder?

The Endless Dunes - named this because of the fight location being in a secluded area deep in the Sagolii Desert at night; significant since thats where she was born and raised

Thok ast Thok - Write a brief flavor-text about your trial one would find as a listed description in the duty-finder

At the end of your winding road awaits a figure shrouded in the sands. Life has ceased to be in this barren land; there is but one path forward. The figure meets your gaze unshaken and expectant. The night winds howl in rage. Silence the Warrior of Light.

Cape Westwind - What is the setting of the battle? Where will it take place?

Deep within the Sagolii Desert in Southern Thanalan, past her birthplace of Forgotten Springs. She used her power in anger to raise earth into a platform surrounded only by towering dunes and some of the locale’s rocky sand filled ravines. Its extremely difficult to enter and life threatening to leave if you aren’t careful.

The Howling Eye - Write a description of the opening cut-scene preceding the fight

The questline leading up to this fight would involve the player discovering the WoL has gone rogue and wants to renounce the world and herself as Hydaelyn’s instrument. She’s been driven to her breaking point and despairs over the future and freedoms she feels were robbed from her when she was given Echo without consent; thereby made to endure pain and suffering she never asked for.

Because at this stage she’s been unable to find a cure to get rid of Echo, all her hidden negative emotions have made her snap into a mass of destruction. The player must fight her to make her come to her senses, which involves killing her multiple times only for her to be revived more pissed than before (due to Hydaelyn continuing to reconstruct her body to reinsert her soul upon any events that would kill her physically- this is my personal explanation for how the Echo buff in gameplay would work lorewise)

Player(s) enters the battle area at midnight and looks around to find only the stars and dunes they can’t see past. The entire land is swept by an unnaturally strong wind and sandstorm they shield their face from and as it ends the compact platform in front of them has Vaste standing with her back turned. She’s staring at the sky as you approach and unarmed, then closes her eyes hearing you. She’s known you, or something like you, was coming. When you reach almost halfway she sighs before opening her eyes and reaching her right hand out beside her. In a flash of energy that looks and sounds like lightening and thunder her spear is summoned. The player stops in their tracks, shocked. Slowly she turns appearing furious and assumes battle stance. Cue the traditional FF pan out then zoom in as the frame blurs white.

Thornmarch - What would be your character’s opening dialogue(s) upon the start of the battle?

Approaching party: “You should’ve let me stay gone.”

As players initiate their openers: “There is nothing here but your grave.”

The Chrysalis - What would be your character’s final words upon defeat?

As she falls to the ground: “I see it clear...a world of light.”

The Final Steps of Faith - How would some of the mechanics of the fight operate? Include as many as you want and specify whether it is for hard-mode or extreme (if applicable)

I’ll describe only the EX version but any lower difficulties would roughly the same just not as intensive

Initial phase she’ll hit the MT with enhanced damage Fang and Claw and Wheeling Thrust combos combined with the Heavy Thrust and Blood for Blood buffs; a special version of the Wheeling Thrust combo called Dragon’s Spin is a tankbuster with massive crit because it has Life Surge effect applied to its damage on final hit, this will come after 20% of total health bar is gone, due to LS 10% of her HP is restored from her damage dealt

As the MT activates their mitigation two cone AoEs will appear behind her diagonally shooting out Geirskogul attacks before alternating position to be two cones facing front of her and repeating the attack, finally the cones will become a pair of rectangles from her sides, she will then perform a centered circle AoE with Dragonfire Dive

The next mechanic sees her use Mirage Dive to chase the party around the arena with rapid small circle AoEs that fan out in position from the center to the edge of the platform before returning to neutral battle stance and using a platform wide AoE that starts at the center and which players will have to run to either the southeast or northwest corners of the arena to take the least damage, this is Dragonsong Dive

From here the arena is shattered and there’s an Active Time Maneuver to get yourself on a stable piece of debris as everyone is tossed into the sky, as the pieces crash back down they form a massive crater that hits down to the rock beneath the sands and the entire area is surrounded by a massive sandstorm

All party members will gain a Buffeted debuff that does 150 damage constantly until the end of battle due to the environment and can be healed through to deal with but not Esuna’d away

She will land and target the MT with Spinshatter Dive, at this point she’ll buff herself with Battle Litany and enter red Blood of the Dragon to charge Nastrond

As she charges the attack adds will appear called Fragments of Agony that must be destroyed or they will charge her Agony gauge and the Nastrond will instant wipe everyone when it goes off, if everyone successfully kills the Fragments the Nastrond won’t wipe but deal massive damage

There is a brief resting period as she becomes untargetable and creates shades of Yugiri, Estinien, Lyse, Y’shtola, and Haurchefant from memory using leftover charge from her Agony gauge when it was prevented from being filled, players will then have to prioritize all adds in a dps check as they shield her and each has their own AoEs to look out for

After all adds are down she will rejoin the fight with Jump as a large centered AoE, then repeat her initial mechanics before the phase change until brought to 0%

Urth’s Fount - Would there be any mechanics that when ignored would result in an instant wipe?

Failing to stop the Agony gauge from reaching full or failing the dps check will be instant TPKs

The Royal Menagerie - Describe your OC’s techniques or special attacks that the party will have to avoid or be cautious dealing with

Players will need to be on the lookout for Geirskogul, Mirage Dive, Dragonfire and Dragonsong Dive whenever they appear as they’ll hit fast and hard, the entire first phase will also have her in Blood of the Dragon which will increase her attack potency

The Singularity Reactor - Will your character summon adds and companions throughout the encounter, or would it be a single-target fight?

The second phase will have shade memories of her closest NPC friends as adds

Akh Afah Amphitheater - Will your trial be a single-phase fight or will there be different segments to the encounter?

Two phases

Battle on the Big Bridge - What would the battle theme sound like? Will the music shift when the second phase of the fight begins?

The opening music for phase one will be something in the same vein and tone as Ramuh’s Rolling Thunder theme while the second phase shift goes into something closer to Shiva’s Oblivion theme; in both halves of the theme theres an undercurrent beat akin to Revenge Twofold

The Navel - How easy would it be for a DRG to fall off the edge of the stage in your trial?

Since she’s a DRG herself, pretty hard for another to fly off the side since there’s a lot of room just for her attacks to go off well

Castrum Fluminis - Would your OC drop any loot at the end of the fight? If so, describe them (tokens, tomes, weapons, crafting reagents, mounts, etc.)

Her completion reward is two chests with orchestrion rolls for both fight phases respectively, a minion of herself, and rarer a copy of Alba her chocobo mount alongside whatever gear is the current standard ilevel and 50 tomes of the current highest grade

Emanation - Name someone else’s OC you would like to see as a trial boss. Be sure to tag them

Well it's damn near March already. What the hell? Where does the time go?

The whole world is in a huff about COVID-19, and here in Japan too, obviously, but people are in full-on freakout mode. First thing they did was go on a panic-buying-spree of masks, like surgical masks, you know, the ones everyone here wears when it's either flu or hay fever season. So, there's a shortage of masks now. "ONE BOX PER CUSTOMER!!" signs at the shops with any remaining stock. For me, the funniest thing is that masks do not prevent the wearer from catching a virus. The seal around the face is not perfect, so guess what, shit don't work. Unless you strap on a military grade chemical warfare motherfucker of a mask, like with the filter cans and shit? Nope. I mean, even the homepage of the WHO where you can find a coronavirus FAQ says so ("BUT THE WHO IS CONTROLLED BY THE UN AND THEY'RE SECRETLY OUT TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD SO YOU CAN'T TRUST THAT!!!!" yeah yeah yeah. Shame. On. You). But nahhhh who cares about actually using your head and thinking about how viruses spread. See, the masks work (sorta) when worn by people already infected, as they trap most of the fun stuff ejected by a sneeze or a cough. Not all of it. We can still hope for some fun to be shared among the general populace can we not? Ahhh but it's easier to be a total idiot and follow the herd mentality and panic-buy useless shit. Then there was the fiasco with the cruise ship and not letting passengers disembark, and then it turns out a number were let off without having to go through screening, but the Chinese are still being confined to quarters blah blah blah. Jeeezus Fucking Christ EVERYTHING is made in China anyway, from rubber dog shit to the (probably) fake ICs in your military hardware to your beloved smartphones and related devices, shit, even the incessant machine-diarrhea geyser of clone synths too, so what the hell is the big deal about a potentially pandemic-level megavirus every few years? Chinavirus. Next in the ongoing series. Personally, I don't really care where the viruses originate, and to tell the truth, I get a warm feeling inside when people lose their shit over stuff like this, and even warmer when the death toll rises and rises. Can't think of a better species to get a good culling than the old homo sapiens. Heh. Mister Misanthrope at your service! But anyway.....

Found this ancient beast sitting forgotten and forlorn in a closet at work. It's a Luxman 38FD "High Fidelity Stereo Integrated Amplifier" made around 1970 (like me!). It is in near fucking mint condition. HEAVY. AS. FUCK. And the winningest part of the whole thing besides it being destined for the Big Garbage pile and as a result free for the taking? IT WORKS. Oh, and even better...

IT'S A VACUUM TUBE AMP!!! Those are the main tubes, 50CA10, pretty much but not totally unobtanium. Yeah, they fucking glow a warm orangey red, and after a bit you can see blue vapor inside. Well, if you turn off all the lights and take the top cover off. It runs hot as fuck too. I was just shocked the thing worked. It's sitting comfortably atop the desk in the lair, where you'd normally park a printer, with a pair of Yamaha NS-100X speakers on risers above it. Sounds great. There's considerably more noise (hiss?) than a modern amp, but with the volume knob raised to about 10 o'clock, it's already loud enough that the hiss isn't even a consideration anymore, and any louder would be asking for trouble with the neighbors. I can't believe it because the amp is supposed to be a mere 30 watts per channel. I guess 30 watts from vacuum tubes is a hell of a lot different from even triple that from a modern amp. LOUD!!! So yay me.

Oh and speaking of viruses....

I was watching this one on the auction for about a month and a half. The opening bid started out at around $1700 but nobody bid, and the auction ended, and one option here on the yahoo auction is for an automatic re-listing with the opening bid discounted by a certain percent. I watched for a while, then just when I'd forgotten about it, it came up in the look-at-me feed and the price was down to a grand so I bid on it and won. I had one of these before and regretted selling it, thus the TI Polar in my arsenal now, but the 61-key TI has THE BEST keys ever. Feels so good to play. Fatar! I thought yeah ok I'll just say see ya to the Polar and call it even. But... Hmm... Wait... One thing led to another and in the end I decided to keep both the viruses and... and...... and...... sell the ION. Say WHAT?!?! After all the work and repairs and maintenance and customizing LEDs and and and and.... Yeah. It's a hell of a synth, no doubt about it, but I think anything with the Alesis logo on it has a very definite shelf-life. The pots are gonna go, a few are acting up already, and those are unobtanium unless you wanna shell out the dosh and buy from syntaur. You can't get NOS pots either. So... After some serious deep-thinking and careful consideration and deliberation I had to say to myself, "self, it's a wonderful machine capable of some great sounds, but it's only 8-voice polyphonic, there are barely any effects to mention, ok sure the mod matrix and plethora of filter models and waveshaping are fantastic, but you know how ridiculously MORE powerful the Virus TI is almost every respect!" And I admitted defeat. To myself. Weird, I know. But there you go. I don't think I know anyone with two Virus TI (or TI2) synths in their collection. Maybe Anthony Rother. I know he has two IONs.

Ahhhh but this 61-key virus wasn't without problems. Uh, well, OK one BIG problem. The power supply shat itself when I turned it on for the first time. The LCD sorta flashed, there was a brief sign of life with some of the LEDs, but then blip! Nothing. Aaaaargh! Unseat the power cable, reseat it, try again. Nothing, just a high-pitched whine that was getting louder. I put my head up against the front panel, listening for where the whine was coming from, and figured out it was the far right side. That's where the PSU is. Then suddenly the sound changed to a higher pitch that swept downwards over the course of a few seconds, all the while sputtering like it had a downward sawtooth filter on it, then POP! No more sound. When I opened the case up, I immediately remembered that for whatever reason, Access decided to go with a PSU like you'd use with a laptop computer, the big brick-like deals, and that they'd carefully bracketed the brick in so that the eyeglass-socket for the plug lined up with the hole in the rear panel. OK so all I needed to do was find a same-rating PSU and then go about modding the bracket so cosmetically it would look from-the-factory. Incidentally, I contacted Access and asked about parts, but the rep said they don't have any more PSUs for the TI series, only ones for the TI2 series, and that they aren't the same size so when they do the repair, they put a DC jack on the rear panel and the PSU gets left out—goes from internal to external if you catch my drift. Well, no thank you, I do not care for that approach, no sir, I didn't wanna go that route at all. So, thanks to having access to a drill press and diamond-saw dremel tools at work, I made the necessary mods to the bracket, padded it a bit so it would securely hold the new PSU in place, and in the end you can't tell it isn't a factory PSU (from the outside). Yay me, part two.

This is the bracket, post choppy-grindy. Yeah so I "secured" the cabling with Scotch 33+... Hey, from the factory it was held down with hot glue!

Yeah that's where it attached to the PCB. CHEEKY!!!!!!!

Not bad, right? You'd never know. But I've told you, so now you know. Oh and the PSU was $22 from a local parts chain (Marutsu). I think Access wants about $50 but I think that includes free shipping anywhere in the world. I'm just glad it's working fine now.

Other goings on... I've sold the Timeline and Space pedals, and used part of the proceeds to pick up a Sony DPS-D7 delay and a DPS-R7 reverb to use in their place. But the D7 had a wonky input knob that actually broke off in my fucking hand the second time I went to use it. That pot is super unobtanium, so I thought I'd just epoxy the broke-off-bit and not worry about separately controlling the input levels for the L and R channels (does anyone even DO that?)... Here's the pot.

Even after it was epoxied back together, it was fucking bent as fuck. Red line shows the angle, blue arrow shows where the epoxy ghetto fix went down. I saw another D7 listed as-is for $10 and nobody bid so I won it, and I had intended to just cannibalize the pot, but it turns out that it has a newer OS and it works fucking fine, so that was kind of a head-scratcher. People are weird. This delay is stupid deep. There's a multi-tap algorithm that has like 40 separately programmable taps, each with its own level, pan, feedback, and all that. The reverb (R7) is just as insane with parameters... Dudes, and dudettes, seriously, you need some deep-sea rated scuba gear to really get to grips with these Sony DPS motherfuckers. DEEEEEEEEEEEP AS FUCK. I've owned these before too. Had the F7 Filter too. That thing had a 40-band vocoder and a multi-part digital drum synth in it!? Man I think the engineers at Sony had access to some GOOD drugs back when they were working on this line of effects processors. Seriously. I mean, I love programming, but even I was intimidated by the sheer amount of programmability in these things. The ones I had before were a bit noisy, but these aren't at all. Strange. Fun shit though. Oh and there's this:

Ah fuck, looks a bit out of focus. That right there is a TOA DE-1000 delay. Rare as shit, and this one is in NEW condition. Insane! I've had this one on my radar for a while. Why? Because it's fucking WEIRD!!!! So the max delay time is 255ms or something really not that long at all, but you've got three to control: Left, Center and Right. Individual times (LEDs) and levels (white sliders), plus global wet/dry and feedback, AND modulation time and depth sliders. SLIDERS!!?? Ok it only has four memory slots, and no MIDI, but you can get up to some good mischief with this thing. Last two goodies to blab about:

Top: SONICWARE ELZ_1. What a weirdo synth. I heard that it's a raspberry pi under the hood but really? Who cares. It can do some off the wall shit. A handful of wacky synth engines, topped off by four effects processors at the end. And it has a speaker. My only complaint is no DIN MIDI, just USB and you have to buy a class compliant dealie. I suppose I should do so before I forget. Sounds pretty damn good though, and it does things that I've not heard other synths do. Built well. Fun to play and fun to program. Runs on batteries. Worth looking into. I was so impressed with this that I backed their next project (a groove box type thing it seems). Bottom: KORG AM8000R. This fucker does some WEIRD SHIT! I had one before (and its delay counterpart, the DL8000R) and for whatever reason didn't hold on to them. I think I was looking for more bread and butter, set it and forget it type effects. This was really cheap and it's in great shape. I don't think so many people know about these. Relatively easy to program, and you can get some really good, usable stuff as well as some super far out WTF stuff. The WARP! knob is good fun too.

Oh I suppose it's worth mentioning that I had an album released by Anti Gravity Device out of Tokyo a few weeks ago. Let's see if I can find a link...

New Fic: Geode

For all of you who have asked for museum based makeouts featuring Steve and Darcy, here you go, as promised. ;) I borrowed some elements from the Valentine’s Day Exchange fic that I am still attempting to work on (and that story is not flowing, much to my chagrin, ugh) so you may see some of those things popping up in a fic in the future. Until then, however, hopefully my recipient enjoys this little sample of Shieldshock instead. Note that the story is unbeta’ed and was written under the influence of hard cider, so needless to say any mistakes are entirely my fault and this will definitely be cleaned up and possibly retitled before actually getting posted to AO3.

Gets a little, mildly nsfw at one point, so the bulk of this story is going under the cut.

And as cider clearly makes me babble, I’m shutting up now and letting the story speak for itself.

Like all good things in Steve’s life, this one started with a party and a monkey suit. Oh, who is he kidding, nothing good came of that silly costume the USO stuffed him into, despite the amount of posters that had come out showing off the merits of his physique. But it’s a Stark Industries sponsored masked ball at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan, of all places, and if the downside to not going would be having to endure Pepper’s most disappointed look aimed in his direction, he’ll suck it up, put on the damn domino mask, and take one for the team.

Then again, sometimes these events can surprise him. Or at least the people in attendance can be entirely surprising and intriguing and just make him want to know more about them.

It’s not exactly a meet-cute, as Tony would call it later on as he laughs at the memory of Steve’s misfortune. Rather, it’s a combination of small errors that lead to a slightly drunken local assemblyman gesturing wildly with a full glass of champagne that ends up splashing over Steve and the young woman in a cat-shaped mask decorated with tiny silver stars standing next to him talking to Thor and some other people. The young woman yelps and turns to give the assemblyman a glare, brushing away champagne from the cut-out slit of her dress that runs down her torso.

(Steve isn’t looking, he swears it. It’s just that the movement of her hands is distracting.)

Steve digs a handkerchief out of his pocket and hands it to the woman, who takes it with a grateful smile and turns to mop up herself discreetly. The assemblyman is hustled off by an embarrassed assistant who just shakes his head and mutters statements of apology. “I am so sorry about that,” Steve says, trying to get off all of the champagne from his suit jacket.

“It’s not your fault some other jerk doesn’t know his limits,” the woman says with a scoff and an eyeroll. “Thanks for the handkerchief,” she continues, handing the now damp rag back to him with a dubious look.

“You’re welcome.”

There’s a split second of time where the world pauses for a moment, possibilities about the universe and its consequences spiraling out in every direction. “Can I get you a new drink to make up for it?” Steve blurts out, which makes her smile beneath the cat shaped mask.

“Yeah. That’d be great.”

Behind her Thor looks oddly smug, and raises his glass in Steve’s direction with a nod of approval.

They spend the rest of the gala sitting on a bench in front of a Jackson Pollock painting talking, masks off and resting on the leather cushion between them. And it...it’s good, Steve thinks. Entirely unexpected, but connections can be found in the most random of places. Her name is Darcy, he learns, assistant to Jane Foster, former poli-sci major, technically a New York native though this is the first time in years she’s actually lived in the state. A bundle of sass wrapped up in a small package...and a kind heart over all of that. Not to mention attractive, in a simple black dress with a cutout in the front that shouldn’t make his mouth go dry, but it does anyway.

Darcy fully admits to herself that Steve intrigues the hell out of her. Yeah, there’s the whole Captain America thing, but that’s just gloss on the surface, the mask that he’s making sure people see before they can get to the squishy insides. Dry as the desert sense of humor and a steel backbone, and something innately good about him. That’s something that she’s discovering originates with Steve Rogers, and Captain America got it from him, not the other way around.

He’s kind of lost, Darcy thinks, stealing a glance at him as he stares at the painting on the wall in front of them. Even though it’s been a few years since he’s woken up in the future, he still walks around like he’s not quite there. “What are you thinking?” she asks, tipping her chin in the direction of the picture. She knows that once upon a time he was an art student, not that long before these pictures were being created. Hell, given Pollock’s history there’s every chance that Steve could have run into him somewhere in New York back in the day.

“It’s alive,” Steve says after a while. “Kinda rough, scratching at the edges, but always moving. And army green,” he finishes with a smirk.

“It makes me think of static,” Darcy says, turning her own eyes towards the painting. “Like an old TV that’s been turned to a channel without reception. But if you keep looking at it you’ll spot the moving pictures inside of it, swirling around and then disappearing again.” Her eyes slide back to Steve, lips pursing for a brief moment. “You know, the Brooklyn Museum’s got a pop art exhibit that I’ve been wanting to go see. You in?”

He kisses for the first time on their third museum date, in a shadowy corner of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in one of the little alcoves of the Temple of Dendur. The weight of history is all around her, and yet, Darcy feels like she’s staring straight into the future for once.

“I mean, you can’t deny it’s adorable,” Tony says a few months later as he’s working on finessing the final plans for the magnetic shield holder for Steve’s arm. “You and the lab assistant going on cute little museum dates, rounded out by a shared milkshake afterwards. It’s like the best of 1950s innocent Americana brought to life.” Steve frowns, wanting to object to the whole innocent part of it, because dammit, they’re both adults and deserve to be treated as such, complete with all of the aspects that an adult relationship entails. Then again, he’s never been one to kiss and tell.

“People seem to be under the impression that all we do is look at art and hold hands,” Steve whispers to Darcy that night as he slides inside her, a slow stretch that makes her exhale a gasp and dig her heels into his thighs. “I didn’t want to disabuse them of the notion.”

“They should know that good art combines all of those things,” Darcy replies, running her hands up his abdomen to curve over the muscles in his shoulders. Then they move down his arms until she laces their fingers together, tugging them up over her head as she arches her back, nipples high and tight and dragging against the skin of his chest. “The sacred and the profane, the messy and the precise, the, uh....” Words fail her as Steve thrusts again, eyes falling shut and fingernails digging into the back of his hands. “What was I saying? I forget.”

“Good.” Steve dips his head down and kisses her hard, driving the rest of the words right out of her brain as he keeps moving.

It’s one of those strange hours for a museum, the middle of the afternoon on a Thursday, when the room is filled with ancient arts from faraway lands, yet nearly devoid of human life. Liminal space, Darcy thinks as they wander through, not quite one thing or the other but something entirely new. Normally they wouldn’t even be at a museum on a weekday afternoon, but Steve’s only just returned from a long, brutal mission and Jane was kind enough to give her the day off so they could do something that helps him to feel less like a robot soldier and more like a human once more. The cold sleet outside that keeps rattling against the large windows lining the gallery seems to have done a great job of keeping people away from the Met that day, even though this is New York - it’s rare to find a place this quiet, even on a rainy day in the middle of Manhattan.

Somewhere there’s a docent wandering around, but whoever it is they’re discreet enough to not be spotted. The calm and quiet is enough to allow Steve to slump down a little, like he’s shaking off the blanket of command from his shoulders, and he sits on the bench in the room, staring around at the fine wooden statues that loom over them, keeping watch like silent sentries. “Feel better?” Darcy asks, running a hand over the back of his neck.

“Getting there.” He shakes his head, steepling his fingers over his mouth. “Sometimes it just feels like an act in futility. That no matter what you do you can’t help everybody.”

“Well, you probably can’t help every single person. That’s just impossible,” Darcy points out.

“The head knows that. The heart’s kinda stupid sometimes, though.”

“No, it’s not.” She leans over, presses a damp kiss to his shoulder. “I like your heart exactly how it is.”

Steve places a hand on her face and pulls her mouth to his, kissing her deeply. His other hand goes around her waist and all but tugs her into his lap, bringing her as close as he can given the setting. There’s nothing innocent about these kisses, Darcy knows, even though they’re just one of the many variations of kisses that they’ve shared. These kisses are full of intent and promise, and if they weren’t technically in public Darcy would throw him down on that bench right there and go for a ride.

Then she feels Steve’s hand skate up her bare leg, trailing underneath her skirt until his fingers are tracing the lace edging where her panties meet skin. “Really?” she mumbles against his mouth, even though she is most certainly not protesting.

“Shh,” he whispers back, two fingers dipping below the lace to glide along her folds. “Don’t want to attract attention.” His other arm goes around her waist, holding her in place as he spreads the growing wetness around and up to her clit, running the pad of his finger over the hood. Darcy just sinks her teeth into lower lip and nods, shifting her seat so that he’s got a little bit more room to work. And damn, if he doesn’t know exactly how to touch her, a finger pressing firmly up against her g-spot while his thumb runs in tight circles around her swollen bud, winding her up tighter and tighter. Darcy allows her eyes to fall shut, reveling in the feelings building up inside of her and directing all of her focus on that.

At one point Steve pauses, his hand retreating to her knee. She can feel him trying to modulate his breathing under her, and she opens her eyes to see the docent slowly strolling past them. And while the docent doesn’t seem to be looking at them with any sort of suspicion, Darcy can’t even bring herself to breathe until he’s gone past them. “Too close,” she sighs.

“Should I keep going?” Steve asks, flicking his tongue against the shell of her ear, which he knows full well will ratchet up her arousal and turn her to putty in his hands.

“Don’t you dare stop,” Darcy replies, muffling her moan against his shoulder as his fingers find her center once more. It doesn’t take much beyond that before she’s falling apart in his arms, clenching around his fingers and nearly ripping a hole in his shirt as she holds the noises back. She can feel his soft smile against her forehead, and she runs her hand up through his hair once more, stretching up to nuzzle her nose against his.

The docent walks by once more, and this time it’s all too clear to see the suspicion in his face. “We should probably move,” Steve whispers.

Much to Darcy’s amusement, he has her walk directly in front of him until they’re safe in the cab, away from prying eyes who may comment on his substantially aroused state. “Hey, it’s your own fault; this was entirely your idea,” she says around a giggle as she runs a hand up his thigh. “We’ll be back at yours in fifteen minutes,” Darcy continues as she traces the seam with one fingernail.

“I’m going to hold you to that,” Steve says, taking her hand and moving it to safer territory while Darcy just keeps giggling.

She grabs his hand and tugs him into the shadowy rooms, a smile dancing around pink painted lips and the fall of dark hair curving over her shoulders as she looks back at him. “This was always my favorite room as a kid,” Darcy says, “so let’s see if it holds the same appeal now that I’m supposedly an adult.”

While Steve has been to the American Museum of Natural History before, both pre and post ice, this room is entirely new to him, and it is an impressive sight. Most of the lighting in the Hall of Minerals comes from the cases full of stones in every shade in the rainbow, some carved and polished, others in a rough, crystalline natural state that gleam and glimmer amidst the shadows. The dark walls and the carpeting fade into the background, leaving all of the attention on the stones. In the center of the circular room there are a few circular steps leading up to a pedestal that’s got a massive multicolored block of a stone standing on it, a spotlight aimed on it from above.

Darcy stops in front of a giant amethyst geode that’s nearly the same size as she is set into the wall, deep purple points reflecting off of her glasses as she tilts her head to take it in. “I always liked the geodes best,” she says quietly, like if she were to speak any louder it’d disrupt the air inside of the room. “Rough on the outside, but crack them open and they fucking shine.”

“Like taking off the mask and seeing the human behind it,” Steve murmurs, his mind going back to the first night they met so many months ago and that moment when the masks came off, leaving messy hair and smudged mascara in their wakes and making it that much easier to see the person there and make a real connection.

“Bingo.” Darcy reaches for his hand once more and tangles their fingers together, leading him to the next wall display. “I used to have a rock collection as a kid, you know,” she blurts out, giving Steve a sheepish grin in the process.

There’s something about the non-sequitur that’s so out of the blue and so entirely Darcy that Steve can’t help but smile back at her and back her against the wall between the geode displays, kissing her firmly enough until he’s certain that she understands exactly what he’s trying to say.

Living

A small Southwestern town is experiencing viscous vampire attacks the source of which is assumed to be from the remnants of the Deadlock gang. Overwatch hunter Lunnaea Steele and Blackwatch hunter Jesse McCree are sent in for simple recon. Both of them will learn that a lot can happen in one night.

Lunnaea watched as the sun began its slow decent towards the horizon, the blocky mountains in the distance starting to go from their warm red to dark purples as the sun dipped beneath them. A cold wind billowed through her hair, causing her to pull the collar of her jacket up closer to her neck. It was late winter and despite what one might assume about the desert, their nights proved to be treacherously cold. She stood on a deck made into an outdoor seating area for some bar and restaurant combo, the low hum of an acoustic guitar drifted through the airwaves. It was a nice place compared to the rest of the town which sat just North of Deadlock Gorge. In the past year or so it had been peaceful, ever since Blackwatch came through and dispatched most of the Deadlock vampire nest save for a feral that had been taken in by its commander, Gabriel Reyes. Luna’s watch beeped, prompting her to bring it into view. Your partner should be there soon, hunter – A.

“Thanks Athena,” Luna sighed.

She wasn’t used to working in a small pair like this, usually she was with a larger group of hunters, Lena, Ana, Reinhardt and the like. For now she felt anxious having someone she didn’t quite know at her back, not that she was planning on getting into any fight or die situations while she was here. They were merely supposed to pick up leads on a recent spike in vampire attacks that may be attributed to a few Deadlock stragglers that didn’t go down with the ship. It was mainly sex workers and homeless that were ending up mutilated and drained of blood in alleyways and shitty hotel rooms. It was sad really, which only cemented Luna’s resolve in taking down whoever was behind it. An added horrifying bonus was that they seemed to… play with their food, strangulation, mutilation, severed limbs that were said to be removed before death all pointed to one seriously twisted individual.

The sound of cowboy boots on wood shook Luna from her thoughts as she straightened, not bothering to glance at whoever had joined her on the patio. At least, not until they took up a spot next to her, leaning on the railing, the sound of a lighter sparking to life. Luna turned slightly, immediately cocking an eyebrow to the man beside her. He looked like something out of an old Western and if it hadn’t been for the Deadlock badge clipped to his belt she would have mistaken him for some strange local. He wore a cowboy hat, which was… unique to say the least, the tight black under armor that all Overwatch and Blackwatch agents were given was just peeking out over a worn brown leather jacket. Luna took another second to take him in, noting the six-shooter just inside his jacket, a belt with large golden letters that spelt out BAMF, chaps over dark blue jeans and of course the cowboy boots that looked just about as old as the hat he wore. He’s really wearing chaps? Is this really the supernatural I was waiting for?

“Take a picture, it’ll last you longer,” he flashed her a grin, sure enough the fangs were there, sharp and pearly white.

“You must be the partner I’m waiting for?” She asked.

“They not give you a name?” He asked, taking a deep drag from the cigar he had lit up.

“Jesse? Jesse McCree?” She asked after a moment of trying to remember what the forms had said.

“That’s me, pleasure,” he offered a gloved hand and Luna shook it.

If she was honest she was exhausted from the past few weeks that had kept her in constant action and she was a little more than a bit tired so her welcome wasn’t as warm as it usually would have been, but the tall stranger didn’t seem to mind as he turned back to the horizon which was now thoroughly cloaked in darkness, probably the reason he didn’t come out earlier. She had been working with naturals for so long she had to get used to a supernatural’s schedule again.

“You have a game plan?” He asked casually.

“There are a few places they seem to like, I thought we could hit those places first, see if there are witnesses, basic canvas.” She shrugged.

“Alright, there’s apparently a bar not too far from here, supes only. I could check that out too.”

“A supernatural only bar? In a town like this?” She asked.

Miracle Springs, an admittedly ill named town, was small and modest, places like them weren’t necessarily supernatural exclusive but didn’t quite welcome them with open arms, not to mention the fact that this one in particular seemed to be devoid of all omnic presence which was surprising in this day and age.

“It’s small don’t mean it doesn’t know how to have a good time,” Jesse winked at her, Luna surprised to find butterflies in her stomach immediately present at the sight.

She shook herself. It was a stupid girlish feeling that she didn’t want to admit she liked.

“We can hit the crime scenes and stalking grounds then you go to the bar, sound like a deal?” She asked, turning to head back inside, ready to leave the cold behind.

“Sounds good to me.”

Canvasing had, not surprisingly, been extremely boring. Not that Jesse was boring. No, Luna hadn’t had such interesting conversation while examining blood splatter before. Apparently Jesse was from around there, not Miracle Springs but somewhere nearby, he was pretty vague with the specifics. Luna had told him about her home in Kauai, the basics. It was unexpectedly quaint for such grim circumstances.

“You’ve never ridden a horse?” Luna snorted, removing the rubber gloves she had brought with her as they made it out onto the streets, the alleyway devoid of anything but vague red stains.

“Look I haven’t had the opportunity okay,” he said, sounding somewhat if not falsely hurt by her tone.

“I guess most ranches that offer horseback rides aren’t open during the night, you’d have to find someone who owned them to lend one to you.” Luna shrugged, shoving her now chilled hands into her pockets.

Despite the biting wind that whipped past them Jesse simply had one hand loosely slipped into his jean pocket, not even flinching as the gusts nearly knocked his hat from his head. They were making their way towards the end of the main strip where a corner bar was lit up in purple neon signs that they could see from quite a distance.

“That’s the place?” Luna asked.

“Mmm, The Hunt,” Jesse drawled.

“Sounds cozy,” Luna deadpanned.

They stopped a few storefronts down watching the entrance as people came and went. The windows were blacked out, the only thing evident were the various neon signs. Some customers meandered outside, talking and laughing and smoking just like the outside of any bar in any town.

“Are you sure it’s supernaturals only? Maybe I could-“ “-don’t tell me you were about to say sneak in. They can smell you a block away and you’re not the most easily resistible scents either.”

Both Jesse and Luna blinked at each other for a moment, the look on his face saying that he hadn’t meant for it to come out as suggestive as it had.

“S-So.” Luna cleared her throat, focusing back on the bar, sure that she could blame the pinkness in her cheeks on the weather.

“You go in and I wait out here?” She asked.

“In this temperature?” He asked.

Luna shrugged. True her feet were freezing even through the thick socks and boots, but she wasn’t about to let him go in there alone and not have back up.

“I’ll be fine. The motel is what? Two blocks from here? If anything were to happen you could probably hear it from your room.”

“How did you know where I was staying?” She asked, a sly smile on her lips.

“Because I’m not an idiot, and we’re staying in the same place dumby.”

Luna smiled at the weak insult, he had thrown around all meanings of cusswords during their casual conversation, the change was somewhat endearing. Luna sighed, she was extremely cold.

“Fine, but I’m calling you after fifteen minutes in there. Got it?”

“I only have fifteen minutes? C’mon, I gotta built a rapport, flirt a little.”

“Fine, twenty five. But then I’m calling you.”

Jesse beamed “deal.”

“I’ll head back, if anything feels wrong just leave. There are other ways of finding out about the local supernaturals.” Luna warned, worrying at her lip as she stared down the establishment.

“Okay mom, I got it. Go get warm, I know you naturals like that kinda shit.”

Luna smile, a tired weary smile. She nodded and turned before stopping.

“Hey, McCree.”

“Hmm?” Jesse paused, walking backwards so he was facing her.

“Be careful.”

“You got it.” He winked before spinning around and heading for the door.

Luna shook her head, feeling somewhat like a school girl again on the first day. She had made a friend. Not that she didn’t have friends back with Overwatch, but she had to admit she hadn’t hit it off with someone so fast before. She found herself smiling at the thought before shaking it off. This wasn’t the time for a high school crush, she needed to get to the motel where it was warm and wait for when she was to make her call.

The motel in question was L shaped around a parking lot that extended out into a dirt lot and which then stretched out into the empty desert night. Only two cars were parked in the spaces, a beat up old hatchback of some kind and the pickup that Luna had rented from an elderly lady that lived out on the range. It was better than renting an actual new car, one with that new car smell that was a large blaring signal that you were strangers. Not that it was easy to stay anonymous in such a small place, the eyes of the locals had been lingering on both her and Jesse all afternoon. But it helped, there were a lot of travelers passing through, looking for something out there in the desert, people who just wanted a place to stay for a few days before passing on. The office to the motel was lit up from the inside with a warm yellow glow, an older man sat at the counter with a book in hand and small oval glasses perched on a crooked nose, not even glancing up as Luna rounded to corner, fishing her keys from her pocket.

The sensation in her fingers had dulled from the cold, making it somewhat difficult to unlock to door. The room was simple, a square with a small room at the back which housed the shower and toilet, a countertop with a sink just outside of it. It was a strange sensation to wash your hands while your feet were on carpet. Surprisingly there was not only an old tv but also a freezer fridge, no mirror however. The bed itself was a queen with those tan brown motel sheets with a scratchy comforter over the top, one with a muddled and confusing print on it. Luna sighed as she clicked on the bedside lamp before falling backwards onto the squeaky mattress. As uncomfortable as it was she was exhausted and at this rate she would probably have fallen asleep. If it weren’t for the distinct sound of footsteps from the bathroom.

Jesse meandered into the bar, the interior looking just about how he had guessed. It was a bar trying to be an upscale club. Deep red sofas were scattered around against the walls, everything else was painted black, the dark wooden floors showing the actual age of the place despite its want to be young and new. Surprisingly though there were quite a few patrons littered throughout, some in small groups and others just sitting at the bar on their own, no one however was dancing to the poorly mixed dance music that blasted over the stereos. The bar tender was a young man, mid-twenties with dark black hair that was pulled back away from his face, he tended idly to the glasses and taps, pacing ever so slightly between a couple and a lone man on either side of the bar. Jesse rolled his shoulders back, straightening himself slightly before approaching, getting a leg up on one of the vinyl circular bar stools before leaning forward and flashing a grin his way.

The man smiled back, although it didn’t quite reach his eyes.

“What can I do for you?” He asked, although it was in a somewhat level tone and would have been inaudible to naturals over the music Jesse could hear him just fine.

“Whiskey, straight up,” Jesse gave him an affirmative nod.

The bar tender returned it before going to collect his drink.

Luna shot up, her hand going to her pistol which had been neatly tucked under her jacket. The figure moved quickly, slashing at her and knocking her back sideways onto the bed with tremendous force. It was obvious she was dealing with a supernatural, the action had been almost lazy, a slight tap if they had been a natural. Luna rolled off of the bed and onto the floor as the intruder lunged, trying to get a good look at them as she pulled herself to her feet. They were male and honestly they looked like an elderly man in a teenager’s body. He was lean, with short choppy sandy blond hair, but his face looked like it had aged unnaturally with the rest of his body, sunken eyes and hollow cheeks, his irises a deep angry red. He was blood crazed, a certain kind of feralness that took over after one gorged themselves to excess. He looked dirty, a formerly white shirt was now covered in red dirt and what looked like grease and poking out just below the sleeve Luna could see the beginning of a tattoo, a Deadlock tattoo. Luna fumbled for her phone as she put a bead on the advancing vampire.

“You don’t want to do this,” she warned, her voice dark with warning.

When Luna’s fingers found the cool case of her cellphone the feral leapt, slashing at her with sharp unkempt claws that neatly slashed through the sleeve of her jacket. Luna’s heart jumped into her throat as she felt the sudden numbness followed by the heat of thick blood soaking into her jacket arm. This was bad.

“Here you go.” The bartender set the glass in front of Jesse.

“Thank you kindly. Say, you wouldn’t happen to be willing to give a bit of a newcomer some advice?” Jesse asked.

“What kind of advice?” The bartender asked, cocking an eyebrow.

Jesse leaned in, motioning for him to do the same.

“I’m looking for… treaty free meals if you know what I mean,” Jesse purred, trying to put on the best mischievous grin he could, making lazy eye contact as he did.

The bartender’s gaze dropped, a genuine smirk breaking his stoic expression.

“I’ve heard of a few places…”

Luna was thrown, hard, against the wall, her head ricocheting off of the drywall with a sickening crack. The cuts on her arm were bleeding profusely and her grip had weakened on the gun as she lay on her side trying to stop the world from spinning out of control. Clutched in her other hand was her cell phone, the screen bright as she tried to comprehend how to work it again, her mind sluggish from the impact. She tapped the phone icon, smearing blood across the sturdy glass like surface as she went.

“Athena call Jesse—“ Luna was wrenched from the ground by her hair, a yelp leaving her throat as she was half pulled half dragged backwards.

In the chaos and pain something slipped from her hand, either her gun or her phone but she was too disoriented to tell. She was pulled up to face her attacker who smiled hungrily at her before letting her drop. Once again Luna was able to take a second to recuperate, in her hand a phone number was being dialed.

“There’s this feral that likes to fuck with naturals, it’s kept the heat off of those of us who like to… hunt a little more freely. If you want I can—“ Jesse felt his phone buzz in his pocket, leaning away with an apologetic smile. He checked the number and sure enough it read Lunnaea Steele across the top despite him not having her number in his phone.

“I thought you said twenty five minutes,” he chuckled as he answered, sure she had gotten anxious.

What he heard on the other end made him freeze, if he wasn’t long turned maybe his blood would have run cold. There was the distinct sound of a strangled yelp followed by a heavy thud. Jesse didn’t say anything as he stood and headed for the exit, trying desperately to listen to whatever was happening on the other end.

“Luna? Luna can you hear me?” He asked as he stepped outside, there wasn’t a reply, only the sound of a sharp intake of breath before he was sure he had heard something snap followed by a blood curdling scream.

Jesse took off at a run.

Luna lay holding her now very broken arm to her chest as the feral loomed over her, he had brought his boot down on it with barely any effort. Through blurry tears and her own waning consciousness she could see the little metal pistol only feet from her. It was a pathetic attempt but she pulled herself forward with her bleeding arm, a deep red trail spreading beneath her as the feral watched, a twisted laugh bubbling up from his gut as he rolled her over onto her back before pinning her to the ground.

“So stupid to send such a weak hunter,” he hissed, the voice so warped Luna wasn’t sure if it actually came from him or from within him.

Luna could see the pistol now, barely out of reach, she returned her gaze to her attacker for a moment, steeling herself, trying to hide the absolute terror that was tying her stomach in knots. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of begging for her life. It was a quick movement, a flash before he was at her throat and she felt the hot sharp edges of teeth pierce her skin. She let out half a scream but it was cut off by the feeling of suffocating.

Jesse neared the motel, his pace not having slowed and the phone not having left his ear. She was dead. She had to be. He tried to keep up hope, he tried to convince himself she was okay but as he neared and the pungent coppery sweetness of blood met his nose he knew if she wasn’t dead already she was well on her way. Jesse didn’t even try the door, he slammed himself into it, barely a challenge as it nearly flew from its hinges. The scent hit him like a freight train, he could nearly taste it in the air, that almost florally honeyed smell he had been idly resisting while he was around her was now the only thing he could even remotely sense. Outside of that however was the fragrance of a different kind, it was nearly putrid, rotted like roadkill. It was the feral, the blood crazed one that had risen slightly to look at him.

Jesse barely had time to take in the scene before he moved, at the foot of the bed was Luna, her blood soaking the gold and brown carpet, her arm bent at a strange angle cradled against her chest, her other hand was outstretched, fingers digging into the carpet, nearly an inch or two from her fingertips was her gun. Jesse drew his Peacekeeper swiftly, the feral barely had time to howl a plea before he was dispatched, his body slumping onto Luna’s. Jesse couldn’t hear much, only his panicked breathing as his mind tried to cope with the blood and the fear that clouded his senses. He shoved the limp body from Luna, pulling her face towards him, shoving her hair from her eyes so he could see her properly. Her eyes were blown wide, terror evident as she tried to fumble for words, instead only blood came, pouring from her lips as she tried to breathe, the action making a wet sound. Jesse pulled her jacket collar and shirt from her throat, the four puncture wounds deep and messy, he clamped his hand down over it, trying to apply pressure without cutting off her windpipe.

“Shit, shit, shit, shit.”

This was supposed to be a recon mission, nothing violent, nothing complicated, he had never anticipated that they would have been spotted as hunters so quickly and easily. He wasn’t prepared for this, he didn’t know how to heal a natural. But this, this was unhealable right? There was no way she would recover. On top of the anxiety that rushed through him he felt the distinct sharp pain of hunger in his gut, the viscera covering his hands not doing anything to help quell it.

“Do you want to live?” He asked, holding her face with his free hand, trying to get her to look at him and not through him.

“Luna do you want to live!” He nearly screamed.

She shuttered slightly, mouth gaping as she tried to talk, choking on whatever it was she was trying to say. She nodded, a strangled ‘yes’ freeing itself from her throat before another surge of blood filled her mouth.

“I’m sorry,” Jesse said before lowering himself and biting down on what little skin was free from punctures, creating his own, although they were much cleaner. She writhed under him, a gurgling yelp making him feel dirty as he gently as possible stopped her from tearing way from him.

It was quick, he had to be quick, as much as he wanted to linger and drink a little longer he pulled back, replacing his hand on her throat before biting into his wrist. Luna sputtered, gasping wildly for air as her consciousness grew thin, it was the final convulsions of a suffocating human. Jesse pull his wrist over her mouth, holding it there even as she struggled to breathe around it before there was a distinct moment of stillness and quiet. Jesse sat there in stunned silence, unsure if he had succeeded before he felt her hand grasp his arm with the neediness of a starved animal. Her eyes were half open, her breathing slowly evening before she relaxed, her entire body going limp.

Jesse sat back for a moment, his entire body shaking and breath heavy. What did you do? Jesse blinked a few times, looking down at his blood smattered… well everything. He was dead. What had he done? He had broken so many laws, so many treaties and rules. Commander Morrison would have his head. He had panicked, he had tried to save her life that’s all but… but like this? He had asked, that was true, but when someone is in their final moments of suffering an excruciatingly painful dead what else would they say? Maybe no, maybe end the suffering, but she had said yes. She said yes. The sound of sirens somewhere across town broke him from his stupor. This had likely not been a very quiet ordeal, he need to think dammit. Jesse spotted Luna’s duffle bag under the bed, pulling it out and rummaging through it to find the keys to the old pickup out front. He had to get them out of there, that was just a given, he’d figure the rest out later. Jesse pulled off his jacket and worked Luna into it before throwing her gun and cellphone which was still in a call with his into the bag. He slung it over his shoulder before collecting her from the floor and dashing to the parking lot.

As gently as possible Jesse laid her across the bench seats before climbing in and tossing the bag on the passenger floor. He kicked over the engine and sped off into the night, hands gripping the steering wheel like it was going to come off. It was all a massive blur, hell he didn’t even know what direction he was headed in other than away from the little town that had caused so much trouble. He held out fine for a while, eyes straight ahead, thoughts quiet before finally it all came crumbling down. He pulled off to the side of the road as he tried to calm the frantic breathing that tightened his chest.

“Fuck. Fuck.” He hit the steering wheel with such force it dented slightly.

“Goddammit what the fuck did I do,” he shoved his hands in his hair, his hat falling to the side as he struggled to keep himself from imploding. He paused a moment before reaching into his pocket with shaking hands.

The number was easy, like remembering a home address, it was the agonizingly long dial tone that made him feel like he was going to throw up.

“Hello?” a gruff voice answered.

“Gabe? I—I fucked up—“ he looked down at Luna who hadn’t moved since they left the motel “—bad.”

Physical comics: You may have a comic book store near you! Comic Shop Locator Hater Free Wednesdays Your local library may have a selection of physical comics as well. Ask your local librarian (many of us are nerds in disguise!)
