Red Haired Pirates (Shanks Cloak)

“Ha! Ha! I am the Captain now!” Dokucha cheered as they climbed their way to the table, a familiar cloak engulfing them as they did.

“Hmm, Captain, you seem to have shrunk; what’s up with that?” Beck drawled, nursing the drink of his hand as he looked up at the child

“Shut up!” They yelled, shrinking slightly at the pointed glare the first mate sent them

“S-sorry, I meant quiet?

“…”

“Quiet, please?”

“Better,” he nodded, taking a sip from the sakazuki

“I’m Captain Shanks! Bow before me, peasants!” They called arms raised in victory

“I think that was the wrong Impression, Dokucha,” Lucky snickered, taking a bite from his meat

“Why don’t you try something the Boss always does?” Beck suggested

“Oh! Okay!” They nodded, clearing their throat

“I am Captain Shanks! I love women and alcohol and, and and breaking kids hearts!” They roared at the top of their lungs

“Huh? Did I get it wrong?” they asked, tilting their heads confused seeing as Yassop and Lucky doubled over laughing, Beck doing a spit take upon hearing the kid's’ words.

Kidd Pirates ( Kidd’s Coat)

Heat jumped from his bed as his door shot open, and a red ball of hair was thrown in. Curious, he approached the familiar coat, quirking his head as a small face popped up from it.

“Dokucha?”

“Uncle Heat! Help me!”

“W- What’s wrong?

“Hide me, please!” They begged as they threw themselves on the floor in front of him

“Oh. I’m guessing it has to do with his coat?” He asked, frowning as they nodded their head

“What do I get out of it?”

“Are you serious, uncle?!” They shouted, an incredulous look on their face as they shot up

“Sorry, kid. When it comes to the Boss, I’m not doing it for free. You better choose quick, though,” he teased. Before Dokucha could ask about his words, the sound of doors slamming, curses ringing, and stomping feet sounded behind them, causing Dokucha to blanch out.

“Anything! Please just hide me! I was just so cold, and he was in the shower. I forgot to put it back, please!”

“Eh, not worth, sorry.”

“Uncle?”

“Boss, they’re over here!” They gaped at the man, horrified at the betrayal, until the door behind them shot open, and something grabbed hold of them. They let out a cry as Kidd threw them over his shoulders, saying no words as he left the room.

“You better sleep with one eye open, Uncle!” They hollered as Heat simply waved them off, a teasing smile on his face as they continued trying to fight their way off the Captain’s hold

Some unprompted headcanons for Babs, Jason, and Tim just because I felt like it.

You know most computers now let you have multiple personalisation settings. Barbara has a different pre-set for each member of the family, and she changes them each day depending on who she’s Oracle-ing for. Very generic grey and black theme for Batman. Blue for Nightwing with a picture of him as her background. Red Robin and Red Hood are both, well, red, but her keyboard lights up yellow for Red Robin. All yellow for Signal, lots of purple for Spoiler. Black and yellow for Batgirl. Robin doesn’t have his own yet, since he doesn’t work alone much, however, she does have a bunch of his drawings pinned on the walls.

Jason is a book worm, yes, BUT he does not treat books well .With the exception special editions or books that are particularly meaningful to him, he carries pocket paperbacks around with him and they get battered; torn covers, singed edges, dented corners. That’s on top of his dog earring the pages and annotating them in whatever pen he can find. If he reads an extract or a poem that reminds him of somebody he will straight up rip it out and keep it in his pocket for days, weeks, months until he remembers to give it to the person.

Tim collects bottle caps. No wait, that’s not quite true, people collect soda caps for him. It started when he was a kid and Zesti Cola released a special edition glass bottle for on of their big anniversaries. He just thought it was cool, so he kept it. Years later while he’s out photographing Robin he steps on a funky looking Soder Cola cap and decides to keep it. When he moves into the mansion Bruce finds those two old and beaten-up caps when he’s helping Tim unpack and latches onto it as a bonding thing, starts seeking out glass bottles whenever he’s somewhere new and tells Alfred to do the same. When Steph finds a trinket tray full of bottle caps in Tim’s room she assumes he's a collector and starts doing the same until one day it’s just an unspoken things that everyone in the family does. When you find a bottle cap you give it to Tim. Tim has never questioned it, but he is running out of space.

Bricks?” Lucinne mock-questioned as she lifted up the two suitcases to toss them haphazardly in the passenger seat. “Stuff,” said the girl, carefully climbing into the skyslipper’s back seat. The Warrior of Darkness stepped over to the driver-side door and was about to jump in before Ryne spoke up.

“Excuse me, but could I drive the skyslipper today?”

Lucinne stared at her. “You…know how to drive one of these things?” Ryne paused, running a hand through her carefully-brushed hair. “Um, no, but…it’s not that hard, is it? I’ve seen you and Thancred do it.”

Gaia looked at Ryne with a sarcastic expression. “Yes, but they ride on birds and ships all the time. You don’t.” Cinne raised a hand to shush Gaia, before vaulting over the side of the vehicle and landing comfortably in the backseat next to her.

“Hard to crash out here, what with the ‘slipper floating over mostly flat ground,” Lucinne reasoned. “Worst case, I can correct our course if something goes amiss. Sound good?”

Ryne whispered a quiet “yesss” under her breath as she climbed into the skyslipper. Gaia rolled her eyes and let out a groan as she propped her chin up on her hand, allowing her arm to rest on the door. “If you manage to crash, once we get back to civilization, I’m never going to speak to you again.”

The once-oracle Ryne looked worried for a moment before Gaia quickly added an “I’m kidding,” onto her threat. “You’d better be! But I won’t crash. Lucinne will make sure of that. Right?”

As if to jokingly counter her question, Lucinne was already leaning back in her spot next to Gaia, hands up behind her head. “Oh—yes, of course. Map’s in the glove box, by the way.”

Ryne fumbled around in the compartment, but eventually found a faded map with several annotations added by the practiced hand of Thancred and the mostly legible scrawl of Lucinne.

“Right, then…” Ryne murmured, passing the map to Gaia. “To Eden!” she cried, raising a hand triumphantly. Cinne watched on with a grin as Ryne paused awkwardly.

“Might need these,” the Warrior teased, tossing her a keyring. “To Eden,” Gaia added, much more quietly as she stifled a laugh.

Commentary on the Star Ruby

For those of you familiar with this blog, you'll likely know that I am a huge proponent of the Lesser Rituals of the Pentagram and their myriad of non-appropriative variants.

Today I want to talk about one of these variants, written by none other than Aleister Crowley himself. Though Star Ruby isn't strictly a variant so much as it is a replacement, I still think there's a lot to be said for the structure and components of the ritual in comparison to the LRP.

I don't want to take up too much space talking about the technical performance of the ritual. Instead, I highly recommend reading through this annotated version by Sabazius and having it open while reading this post.

In addition, if you aren't versed in the LRP I suggest this abridged version on Thelemapedia. It's very short, but it's the only online source I found with mostly accurate information and no excess fluff. If you want a detailed version, please consult Donald Kraig's Modern Magick or the Ciceros' Essential Golden Dawn.

Alright. Let's set aside Crowley's writings on the subject for a moment. As amazing as they are, they're often too dense to effectively parse in a short blog post. Instead, I want to compare the material, somatic, and verbal components of these rituals.

Let's start with the material components. In the LRP, you traditionally use either your hand, a dagger, or a wand. In the Thelemic tradition, there is evidence for a rose-headed wand, but I'm not familiar enough to make a comment. So in either case, you can perform the ritual with no material components save for your bare hands.

Okay, with the material components out of the way let's move to the somatic ones. These movements are largely the same as the LRP in some respects, and not even close in others. Let's first take a look at the structure of Star Ruby:

The Call

The Final Cross

It looks exactly the same as the LRP. And the actual movements of the First and Final Crosses are exactly the same. The movements are also nearly identical during the Call. It's the Pentagrams that differ the most from the LRP.

Let's take a look at how they differ exactly:

The LRP uses blue pentagrams; Star Ruby uses red.

The LRP moves clockwise around the space; Star Ruby moves counterclockwise.

The LRP has the magician physically draw the pentagrams; Star Ruby has the magician imagine them on the forehead before pushing outward into its position.

The LRP does not have any bridging movements between the Pentagrams and the Call; Star Ruby uses the N.O.X. signs.

Okay, neat. The only things left to cover are the verbal components. So how do they stack up?

In fact, the verbal components are by far the greatest divergence from the LRP. In the LRP, Judeo-Christian names for God are used while drawing the pentagrams. In addition, Hebrew archangels are invoked at the elemental quarters.

This is very different from Star Ruby. Instead of using Judeo-Christian terminology, Crowley opted for Graeco-Egyptian, Neoplatonic, and Thelemic invocations instead. For example, Star Ruby invokes spirits from the Chaldean Oracles of Zoroaster in its elemental quarters.

Okay, great. So we've compared the two rituals. Now what? So what?

Setting aside the Kabbalistic symbolism that Crowley worked into Star Ruby (which I purposely did not cover), it's still a very solid ritual that appeals to non-Judeo-Christian magicians that wish to try out a daily magical ritual besides the LRP.

ANNOTATION

Bufonite is another symbol of magic and power (see also Brooms), but this one is far more legendary in nature. Bufonite, or toadstone—first mentioned in mythology around the time of Pliny the Elder—is a magical jewel that was said to grow inside toads, and is a cure to all poisons much like a bezoar found in the brain of a toad. Like bezoar, there is no scientific basis for the belief that bufonite was any sort of antidote, but jewelry was created from gems supposedly harvested from toads to ward against ills.

INSPIRATION

Perhaps there is no scientific basis for the claims that bufonite is an antidote, let alone that it existed at all (many bufonite amulets were, in fact, fossilized fish heads); but as a metaphor, it is still quite powerful. Toads were often described as witches familiars, and their skin was thought to be used in all manner of magical poisons. Yet, from inside the head of those toads, folklore also invented a cure.
