It's been 800 years and I STILL have beef with whoever is responsible for writing the Vulgate cycle for having the AUDACITY to bring Galahad into the mythos. I'm someone who normally likes Mary Sue type characters, but there comes a LIMIT

mordred through time (movies, tv shows, opera and musicals)
Part 5: From 2018 to 2023 (and 2024)
Other Parts: Part 1: From 1949 to 1981 -> here Part 2: From 1982 to 2002 -> here Part 3: From 2002 to 2010 -> here Part 4: From 2014 to 2017 -> here
For this last part I wanted to talk a bit about queer Mordred!
First of all, Mordred is one of the main characters who is written as LGBTQ in novels and other media. My arthurian excel list of queer arthurian characters (arthurian list of everything, in the LGBTQ sheet) is up to a few years ago, but the numbers seem to be: LGBTQ Lancelot in 16 media, Arthur in 13 media which is equal to Mordred who is also LGBTQ in 13 media (two being interpretations: White's "The once and future king" and "Fall of Camelot" fromt he Time Life books). Most of these are, of course, novels, with the first ever appearance of LGBTQ Mordred in 1956 Borowsky's novel "The Queen's knight", where Mordred is a gay man. Then in 1982 Cherryh's "Port Eternity" has asexual Mordred, even if the characters could be debated on how arthurian they are. We then jump to 1997 with the short story "The Pretender" by Stephen Dedman, with mlm Mordred.
2005 "A Connecticut Fashionista in King Arthur's Court" by Mari Mancusi (gay Mordred) 2006 "Mordred bastard son" by Douglas Clegg (gay Mordred) 2008 "The Silurian series" by Wilson (gay Mordred) 2012 "The Prince and the Program" by Mercer (bisexual Mordred) 2014 "Mordred and the king" by Curlovich (gay Mordred)
In movies, shows and musicals instead we could consider 2008 musical Mordred the first iteration of queer Mordred (part 3). This is of course an interpretation and it might probably just be a case of queer-coding of villains that reminds of Disney movies. Still, there is no doubt Bobby Steggert, who is an out gay actor (at the time, now he is a therapist) played an obvious queer coded Mordred.
It is only in 2014 that we have an explicit LGBTQ Mordred with "High Noon over Camelot" which also for the first time ever introduces Mordred as a trans man. From 2017 we also get introduced to Fate's Mordred (Fate/Aprocrypha and subsequient movies and stage shows) whose gender has always been a debated topic. I already talked about it in part 4, but Mordred in Fate is definitely written as a non binary character. In 2018 the webseries "The Campaign for Camelot" has Mordred as a protagonist and mlm, with a romance as well (another male character in the show). The last time we saw Mordred with a romance was back in the 60s, in the movie "Sword of Lancelot"!
I think the most interesting thing is that Mordred is without a doubt the character who is the most interpreted as LGBTQ in movies and tv shows. From memory, the only other characters are Morgana (in the Netflix's "Cursed", webseries "Legend" and "The Campaign for Camelot"), Lancelot (in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "High Noon over Camelot" and "Spamalot"), Galahad (in Josh Ritter's song "Galahad"), Arthur ("High noon over Camelot") and Merlin (webseries "Legend").
2018 Arthur et les enfants de la Table Ronde: This is a two-seasons French animated show that narrates the adventures of Arthur, an orphan kid living in Uther's kingdom. The show has other arthurian characters as kids (Guinevere, Gawain, Sagramore, Morgana) and Mordred himself is also a kid. Morgause and Igraine (Morgana's sisters) are the main villain and Mordred (their cousin) is also a villain. The voice from the clip is from the Italian dub but the original French voice actor was Ricardo Richter.
2018 The Campaign for Camelot (webseries): This websites (you can watch it here) is a complete 78 short episodes series where different modern arthurian characters decide to run for the school board against Arthur's wishes. Mordred is one of the main protagonists and he is introduced in episode 7. Over the series he also develops a romance with Izzy (Iddawg, from “The Dream of Rhonabwy”). To clarify, in the clip Mordred is the guy without the glasses and the darker shirt! And he is played by Dylan Martin.
2018/2019 OSK's Knights of the Round Table musical: This clip is from a recording but a dvd also exists. OSK is a Japanese theater company of all women. Mordred was interpreted by Momo Mika. The story of the musical follows the classical Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot triangle with Mordred appearing (as Arthur's son) in the second part of the story.
2020 Arthur and Merlin: Knights of Camelot: A much less exciting movie than I expected, focusing on Arthur trying to reclaim Camelot after Mordred betrays him. Mordred (played by Joel Phillimore) plays Arthur's son and the villain of the story. He often uses threats of sexual violence towards Guinevere.
2020 Fate/Grand Order the movie: Camelot: Another installment in the Fate series. This movie is set in the Grand Order timeline (different from Apocrypha), but Mordred is still a very similar character and they are still voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro. The original title is Fate/Grand Order: Shinsei Entaku Ryouiki Camelot 1 - Wandering; Agateram as in 2020 only part 1 released. Part 2 is called Fate/Grand Order: Shinsei Entaku Ryouiki Camelot - Paladin; Agateram and was released in 2021. Basically part one is Wandering Agateram and part two is Paladin Agateram. Different from other Fate series, this one is set in the past (in 1273 A.D.).
2021 Fate/Grand Order: The Grand Temple of Time: Another movie based on the videogame Fate/Grand Order... please do not ask me the plot, I just know Mordred is not as present here as in the previous movie or as in Fate/Apocrypha.
2021 Le Roi Arthus opera: This is a 1895 opera written by Ernest Chausson and sung in French. I already talked about it before, just know this is the most recent iteration of it and the only video we have of the opera performed in arthurian clothes (the previous filmed performance was a modernization). Mordred was played by baritone Justin Austin.
2023 Camelot Revival: The return of the musical Camelot! There are a few bootlegs around (at least 4 of them) if you want to watch it, but I am not allowed to share them. Still, I got them from asking a gift on the reddit BootlegsGifts. As I still have to watch it I cannot comment on any possible difference here, just know this version was extremely successful. Mordred is played by Taylor Trensch, and Hawley Gould was his understudy (not in audio).

Top 5: Directorial Debuts
This Top 5 reviews Directorial Debuts, considering the film that was the opening gambit in a director’s career. The requirements for this list are straightforward - the films considered must be full length and had a theatrical run, so short films (although oftentimes a way into the business for directors) were not counted and neither were made for TV movies. Additionally, this list is considering films that were directed by a single person, so first films with co-director’s were not considered (although some fantastic films fall into this category, such as On the Town or Monty Python and the Holy Grail). The final consideration, although not a firm requirement, was that this first film was an opening artistic achievement that became a launching point for a notable and long career to follow.
Gibelwho Productions Presents Directorial Debuts:
5. Spike Jonze / Being John Malkovich
4. Rob Reiner / This is Spinal Tap
3. Pete Doctor / Monsters, Inc.
2. Alex Garland / Ex Machina
Rob Marshall / Chicago
Spike Jonze / Being John Malkovich (1999): This film was not only the theatrical directorial debut for music video savant Spike Jonze, but was also the first feature penned by the now acclaimed screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. Their appreciation for bizarre storylines and unique artistic sensibilities combined to make a mark on the cinematic landscape of Hollywood and opened the doors for both to careers that continue to tell non-traditional stories. Jonze had to contend with a confounding script, but managed to keep the audiences engaged with the twists and turns, and also tuned into the emotional journeys of his main players, including a representation of real-life actor John Malkovich himself. The film is filled with memorable visual sequences, including an office floor with cramped ceilings, John Malkovich’s point of view shot when ordering bath towels, and the incredible mind-bending sequence when John Malkovich enters the portal into his own mind, encountering a world filled with multiple John Malkovichs.
Rob Reiner / This is Spinal Tap (1984): Not only is Rob Reiner’s first feature a hilarious mixture of conceits with a generous helping of improvisation from comedic actors, but it also launched an entirely new genre - the mockumentary. To keep the documentary feel, Reiner produced a mix of shooting styles, including hand-held cinema-verite style, titles to introduce band members, creating black and white faux television “archival” footage, traditional documentary interview footage, and also capturing onstage theatrics. While most of the humor is in the actor’s improvised lines, the camera is not just silently observing, but also gets into the jokes and elevates the gags with visual commentary. With this film, Reiner transitioned from an actor to an established director and continued into a fabulous career that dipped into a multitude of different genres, producing several films now considered modern classics.
Pete Doctor / Monsters, Inc. (2001): While Toy Story was the original revolutionary release from the new animation studio Pixar (also with a first time director), Monsters, Inc. earns its place on this list because of the genius of Pete Doctor. The film was the fourth feature from Pixar, and the first to be helmed by a director other than John Lasseter. Pixar’s legacy (and now future, as he has assumed the role of Chief Creative Officer at Pixar following Lasseter’s exit for inappropriate behavior), was in safe hands with Doctor, who has consistently produced the Pixar films with the most unique conceits and beloved characters. This all started with his story development and leadership on Monsters, Inc., a film that achieved technical advancement with the realistic rendering of monster Sulley’s fur, but also one of the most breathtaking action sequences Pixar has ever envisioned, involving the hunt for little Boo’s bedroom door amongst a cavalcade of children’s doors, all swirling around madly in the warehouse storage space. Doctor’s first effort at Pixar produced a delightful tale, proving that Pixar could still herald the magic when the reigns were handed to other directors, and setting him up for more delightful classics to be directed.
Alex Garland / Ex Machina (2014): Alex Garland transitioned from a successful screenwriting career to directing with this astonishing piece of art - intellectual, challenging, visually stunning, and with a twisting plot that ensures the audience is on the edge of their seat throughout the film’s runtime. The screenplay was especially tight, as to be expected from a writer of Garland’s quality, but his work behind the camera was also incredibly solid, playing with the various textures of the setting’s remote mansion’s stone, wood, metal, and glass and also with the robot Ava’s combination of machine metal and human flesh. Garland expertly uncoils a new element in each conversation, scene, and session, slowly expanding the audience's understanding of the world and motivations of each character, until an explosive ending that revels in a woman taking control of her own destiny.
Rob Marshall / Chicago (2002): What are the odds that a directorial debut revitalizes the musical genre for a modern audience - and then goes on to win the Academy Award? Rob Marshall’s background as a dancer and choreographer masterly transferred to the filmmaking space - expertly conceiving the musical numbers (and entire film!), using all the tools at a filmmaker's disposal that a live theatrical experience cannot - camera composition such as close ups, crafting pacing through editing cuts, and matching sound to image. In the best tradition of Bob Fosse, newly minted director Rob Marshall set his mark upon the filmmaking landscape and brought back musicals as a viable avenue for the industry - a popular success at both the box office and amongst critical circles. Plus the film is so damn fun, with inspired performances by Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones as the two murderers on death’s row that just want to make it in show business. Each number tops the next and (with the small exception of Richerd Gere’s tepid singing and dancing skills) are executed with such spirit and razzle dazzle. And all that jazz!
Honorable Mentions:
Orson Welles / Citizen Kane (1941): For the movie that is consistently hailed as the greatest cinematic film ever to be made, it is quite amazing that it was created by a first time director who also cast himself as the lead role. After Orson Welles notorious stunt with the radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds (which caused mayhem as many in the public believed the play was in fact news outlets reporting actual happenings), Hollywood courted this untried director, giving him immense freedom inside the usually structured studio system. The result was a film that experimented with cinematography, editing, writing and narrative structure - all which have since been hailed as innovative leaps forward in the conception and construction of filmmaking. While the film at the time was a box office flop, Welles left his indelible mark on the industry after the promotion of his efforts by the celebrated French film critic and auteur theory supporter Andre Bazan in Cahiers du Cinema. The film can be a bit rough to the tastes of modern audiences, including the exaggerated performance style, but its technical achievements are not to be missed.
Frank Darabont / The Shawshank Redemption (1994): Another film that did middling during its initial box office run, but has since achieved the status of cult and critical favorite, came from the creative spirit of Frank Darabont, who adapted a Stephen King novella and, by sticking to his resolution to lead the film, was eventually given the chance to direct the feature. With a tight screenplay, phenomenal performances by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, and cinematography by the masterful Roger Deakins - it flourished in the rental market and endured to become one of the highest rated films across many critical lists.
Andrew Niccol / Gattaca (1997): Another writer / new director’s debut contains provocative ideas and powerful imagery paired with striking production design. It is incredible what Andrew Niccol accomplished on a smaller budget, all in service of the story’s dystopian future that feels as though it could be only a few generations away from our own time, where genetics determine a human’s entire future and those who were conceived naturally are condemned to live as a lower caste. The human’s desire to improve their lot in life and explore the universe comes in direct conflict with how science can be used to create fissures in society, enabling human expansion to space, but also limiting a single human’s rights and liberties. Grand ideas and grand design are the drapery for a compelling human story.
Upcoming
Lin-Manuel Miranda /  tick, tick...Boom! (TBD): Based on the first stage musical by Jonathan Larson, this will be Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first foray into the directorial seat. Since the debut of the smash hit Hamilton, his career has been expanding by leaps and bounds, but he has taken a studied, measured approach to stepping into the director’s role. Miranda cited one reason for signing on to the Mary Poppins Returns movie as a chance to study under the masterful Rob Marshall, receiving a front row seat to a masterclass from one of the best filmmakers to capture musical theater in the cinematic format. Miranda himself was part of a theatrical production of tick, tick...Boom! earlier in his career, so he is very familiar with the material (although the screenplay will need to significantly expand the set of characters from a modest three to include the many roles that have been cast). Unfortunately, at the time of writing, due to the pandemic, filming has shut down; but once they have resumed and the film has a chance to see the light of day on Netflix, I will be eagerly awaiting one of my most beloved musicals to come to life through Miranda’s nascent directorial vision.

via Politics – FiveThirtyEight
Pretend I’m the owner of a polling company that surveys political races. I prominently advertise my results: According to a Walt Hickey Polling Inc. survey of 600 likely voters, John Doe is beating Jane Doe 58 percent to 40 percent — John Doe will likely win the election. (Let’s say it’s a race for the U.S. Senate.)
But then you keep reading and you notice that the sample on which my poll is based consists of 400 men and 200 women. You can’t really tell whether I’m adjusting the numbers, and if so, how. Would you trust that number? Unless there’s some state I don’t know about where men outnumber women 2-to-1, you shouldn’t.
So why aren’t we more skeptical of movie ratings that do the same thing?
It’s a worthwhile question, and lately it’s made it pretty hard for us to take the ratings provided on IMDb, the largest and most popular movie site on the internet, at face value. The Academy Awards rightly get criticized for reflecting the preferences of a small, unrepresentative sample of the population, but online ratings have the same problem. Even the vaunted IMDb Top 250 — nominally the best-liked films ever — is worth taking with 250 grains of salt. Women accounted for 52 percent of moviegoers in the U.S. and Canada in 2016, according to the most recent annual study by the Motion Picture Association of America. But on the internet, and on ratings sites, they’re a much smaller percentage.
“If you see any number that is a rating number or a number with a percentage sign, it may be compelling or meaningful and it may not be,” said Gary Langer, the president of Langer Research Associates, the polling firm that has long conducted surveys for ABC News. “And what we need to do rather than be seduced by the number is to subject it to meaningful inquiry as to how it was obtained.”
OK, but how skeptical should we be? To figure that out, I wanted to see how strong the male skew of raters is on IMDb and how big an effect that skew has on movies’ scores.
We’ll start with every film that’s eligible for IMDb’s Top 250 list. A film needs 25,000 ratings from regular IMDb voters to qualify for the list. As of Feb. 14, that was 4,377 titles. Of those movies, only 97 had more ratings from women than men. The other 4,280 films were mostly rated by men, and it wasn’t even close for all but a few films. In 3,942 cases (90 percent of all eligible films), the men outnumbered the women by at least 2-to-1. In 2,212 cases (51 percent), men outnumbered women more than 5-to-1. And in 513 cases (12 percent), the men outnumbered the women by at least 10-to-1.
Looking strictly at IMDb’s weighted average — IMDb adjusts the raw ratings it gets “in order to eliminate and reduce attempts at vote stuffing,” but it does not disclose how — the male skew of raters has a pretty significant effect. In 17 percent of cases, the weighted average of the male and female voters was equal, and in another 26 percent of cases, the votes of the men and women were within 0.1 points of one another. But when there was bigger disagreement — i.e. men and women rated a movie differently by 0.2 points or more, on average — the overall score overwhelmingly broke closer to the men’s rating than the women’s rating. The score was closer to the men’s rating more than 48 percent of the time and closer to the women’s rating less than 9 percent of the time, meaning that when there was disagreement, the male preference won out about 85 percent of the time.
That male skew of raters is also apparent in the 250 movies that make IMDb’s top list, which we pulled on Feb. 16:
So, what’s the issue here? If IMDb is content with its ratings being intended almost solely for men, then there isn’t one. (We reached out to IMDb for comment and for more information on how the site adjusts its ratings, but we received no response. So we don’t know, for example, if IMDb is already doing something to the data that accounts for the gender disparity in raters.) But if IMDb seeks to reflect the opinions of the actual movie-going population, the situation is grave.
Can we fix that? Langer is skeptical. Mainly, besides how simple it is for a dedicated individual or group to “manufacture” results, online data from a self-selected group of people is so inherently dubious that any reweighting of that data is also inherently dubious. You can’t just adjust troublesome data to make it reflect the world, he said.
“The notion that you can take bad data and weight it to be OK is … hazardous to your health,” Langer cautioned.
That said, since the scores of the most popular movie site on the internet are already being calculated based on an entirely self-selected sample, would it destroy the IMDb Top 250 to try to mimic actual movie audiences more? I don’t really think so. As a thought experiment, I used everything we know about IMDb’s rating adjustments — which is far from the full picture — and ran them on the ratings of the 4,377 eligible films after I adjusted the raw ratings to weight men’s and women’s views equally.
We can’t do an adjustment that allows us to perfectly replicate the top 250 — again, we don’t know what’s in the black box, so we can’t re-create it — but to approximate it, I excluded any film that didn’t either a) make the IMDb top 1,000 movies list or b) have a rating from the site’s top 1,000 users within 0.87 points1 of the rating from its users overall. This allows us to sidestep films that would have made the top 250 through vote-stuffing.
My main point is that overall, the naive reweighting didn’t destroy the general look of the 250, and if anything, it elevated films that may have been overlooked because one gender is vastly outnumbered.2
What if IMDb adjusted ratings toward gender parity?
Estimated highest-ranking films on IMDb if the men’s and women’s ratings were weighted toward 50-50 vs. IMDb’s actual rank as of Feb. 16, 2018

IMDb makes adjustments to its raw ratings but does not disclose its methodology. Therefore, these rankings — which start with the raw ratings — may not match a gender-weighted version of a list made by IMDb itself because we can’t re-create the site’s adjustments.
Source: IMDb
The top 100 largely includes films from the original list of 250, and the additions to the list — there are a lot of best picture winners among the newbies — appear mainly in the back half of the 250.
Attempting to reflect a target population is a common practice in many fields that use surveys. It’s not clear to me why movie rating sites don’t do it — or, at the least, why they don’t indicate that their scores are almost all based mostly on the opinions of male users.

Archive Project - May 30, 2014 - Maleficent Review
Maleficent, 2014. Robert Stromberg 97 Minutes Jeez.. Why can't it just be next week already? The only movie i'm really into seeing right now is Edge of Tomorrow, because it unlike most everything else right now seems to be the only thing that is likely going to be an optimistic change of pace in terms of movies right now. No offense to Fault in our Stars, as I don't have a strong enough grip on the source material to get excited to see it, but with the poor reception of A Million Ways to Die in the West and Maleficent, i'm just a little tired of the current output of movies and I just want it to be June already so that I can see how How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Transformers 4 turn out. In any case, I set aside time last weekend to see the original Sleeping Beauty to prepare for this. Prior to this i'd only seen the film once as a little kid and didn't remember any of it. I really liked it! I don't think its a perfect movie but as far as pure storytelling goes its a really good example of the power of simplicity. The movie lacks a lot of well known "Disney-isms" and instead merely sprinkles them on lightly over a bare bones plot about true love and overcoming evil. I can't remember the last time I saw a film with a story so simple and uncomplicated since the last time I watched True Grit. That simplicity ends up being its saving grace. The movie is mostly without flaws and i'd go as far as to say it would be a masterpiece if the Prince and the villain had slightly deeper motivations. Fast forward fifty years into the future, and Disney has entered a period in which they have decided to see how many times they can rip off Wicked and get away with it, by turning every one of their bad guys into a good guy…. or at least a morally grey guy. In this reimagining of the classic Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent was once a powerful and good defender of a race of fairies known as the Moors. She is unfortunately betrayed by a close ally of hers and looses the wings she was born with. Now vengeful of loosing her wings, she transforms herself into a powerful sorceress and curses the daughter of the king with imminent death. Maleficent however soon forms a bond with the young girl and tries to remove the curse. First off, right off the bat the movie makes the mistake of not thoroughly establishing what Maleficent's actual powers are beyond reminding you of what they were in the original movie. At the beginning of the movie she mainly fights people by using her wings. She does have some magical powers but they are never fully brought out until after she looses her wings, and we find out that her powers are great to the point of omnipresence and that they are so great that even she cannot defeat them… Also she has The Wolverine's healing factor for some reason… I will say that this movie looks really good! The visual effects are meticulous in this movie and they all look really great and diverse! The good visual however do undermine the movie multiple times. For whatever reason, the human characters look like they were filmed on the set of Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the visuals didn't mesh well with the CGI. The shot composition at that was extremely uneven and switched between doing pretty good, and then letting the camera violently shake during action scenes for some reason… Of course, this is a Sleeping Beauty movie and the famous Dragon does show up in the movie (executed in a way that was underwhelming..). Unfortunately, the creature that composed one of the best scenes of the original movie was far less visually interesting in a movie where Frog Goblins and Snakes made out of Trees are a regular occurrence. Other than that, the story and acting were pretty bad.. The story sine waves between mature, ultra dark fantasy and riding on the back of the original movie whenever it gets tired. Subsequently the entire second act was a pointless rehash of the events of Sleeping Beauty. The acting wasn't much better as a lot of actors end up giving poor performances or just overdue their part. This isn't helped by the terrible dialog that I kept thinking of alternatives to make better throughout the movie. Plus one of the main character's costume made him look like he just walked off the set of Twilight…. I really don't see anybody liking this movie that isn't a Die Hard fan of Sleeping Beauty or isn't a kid. I don't recommend checking this one out unless you are an insane Disney fanatic. Thank you for reading! Live long and prosper!

I was tagged by @omgtoomuchfandoms ages ago and finally got around to answer this thing. I won’t tag anyone else, though.
RULES: answer these 85 statements and tag people
THE LAST: Drink: A Monster Energy Drink. Not healthy, I know. Phone call: To my mum Text message: “Das klingt tatsächlich ziemlich gut...muss ich mir mal anschauen.” (That does actually sound pretty good...have to check it out some time.) My answer today to a friend who recommended a series to me I intend to have a look at after her description. Song you listened to: Addicted - Saving Abel Time you cried: Exactly one week ago. My dog recently passed away and I’m a mess about it. Dated someone twice: Never so far. Kissed someone and regretted it: Back when I was nineteen, so...about four years ago. Been cheated on: Never Lost someone special: Two and a half weeks ago, my dog was put down. Been depressed: In a somewhat on-again-off-again weird sometimes-lowkey-sometimes-highkey way ever since I’ve been eighteen. Gotten drunk and thrown up: Last year. A mate of mine made an evil alcoholic mix of hell that did not like what I drank before.
FAVOURITE COLOURS: Velvet red Midnight blue Aubergine Terracotta
IN THE LAST YEAR HAVE YOU: Made new friends: Yes Fallen out of love: No Laughed until you cried: Luckily, several times Found out someone was talking about you: Not that I can recall, so I don’t think so Met someone who changed you: No Found out who your friends are: Sort of. In a positive way, luckily. Kissed someone on your facebook list: No
GENERAL: How many of your facebook friends do you know in real life: I knew all of them once, but since I practically haven’t used fb since I left school, it’s not exactly up to date and I lost contact with a lot of those on the list Do you have any pets: Not any more Do you want to change your name: Not really. I kinda like it What did you do for your last birthday: I went bowling with friends. That was fun. What were you doing at midnight last night: Playing The Witcher 3, the Blood And Wine expansion, fullfilling sidequests so I have none left before proceeding with the main story line and finishing it before starting the main game in deathmarch difficulty. Name something you can’t wait for: Tea to cool down, my wonky internet connection to work, a nice meal to finish cooking... What are you listening to right now: A German youtube channel’s pen and paper session - the two-shot adventure “Jailhouse Boogie” by Rocketbeans TV, in case anyone of you guys knows them. And those who don’t and understand German - check the guys out, they are awesome. They’ve got something for every kind of nerd in their program. Have you ever talked to a person named tom: Not that I can recall. Something that is getting on your nerves: Right now? Nothing. Generally speaking? High-pitched wailing of children, tbh. Sirens. Having to explain the same thing over and over again. Waiting for someone who made me hurry up.  Most visited website: Youtube, hands down. Hair colour: Brown. Usually it lightens up in the summer, but I did not spend much time in the sun this year. Long or short hair: Long, but I want to have it cut soon. Not too short, though. Do you have a crush on someone: Not currently. What do you like about yourself: My creativity. Want any piercings: No. I got earrings as a teen, that was enough. I don’t even wear any of those anymore. Blood type: 0+ Nickname: Leo, love, Miko Relationship status: Single Zodiac: Capricorn Pronouns: she/her Favorite tv show: Hannibal, Daredevil, Preacher, Buffy, Westworld, Game of Thrones, Supernatural, Breaking Bad, House of Cards....... I’ll travel to Israel next year, I’m pretty pumped for that. Also, I want to see practically everything of the world some time, so... Pair of trainers: Black and blue asics.
MORE GENERAL: Eating: Right now? Nothing. Drinking: I have a bottle of water next to me I try to remind myself to keep drinking from. I’m about to: Dunno. Keep procrastinating? Maybe take a nap. Or read something. Or write a bit. As I said, dunno. Waiting for: Six p.m. to arrive when I have an appointment with a fellow tenant who has internet issues I am supposed to solve. Want: My group’s next Cthulhu session to happen soon, watch Kingsman 2 next week, and a lot of things that are unobtainable in the foreseeable future Get married: If I ever meet the right person, maybe. Kiss on the first date: Depends on various things, so it changes from case to case, but it can happen, sure. Angels: I’m not sure if I believe in angels as in the biblical concept of them, as much as I like stories with supernatural beings and hierarchies. Note
I went through your links and I couldn’t find it (though there’s a good chance I missed it) but do you have like a beginner’s guide to Arthurian legends? I have like a basic knowledge from like pop culture, a few movies, a wiki hole I went down at work a few weeks ago, but there’s just so much stuff I don’t know where to start.
My links are a bit of a mess, and I think I put some beginner guides around that I cannot even find myself, haha.
I remember that when I started reading arthuriana I focused only on one character. I think that was easier for me because I was really obsessed with him (Mordred, of course!), and I think there are different routes to approach arthuriana (also, be mindful that for me, approaching arthuriana = hobby =/= academic study!).
1) Option one is to follow a character of choice. In this case feel free to ask for more character specific recs, otherwise I have here a list of books I’ve read tagged by main characters and secondary characters. The Arthurian list of everything also has old texts (pre 1850) tagged by character! I think for me this was the easy route because I ended up absorbing a lot of other arthurian stuff in my desperate quest for Mordred content.
2) Option 2 is following the chronological order for old texts (main texts)! You can click on the arthurian list of everything where I added both characters, dates and download links for old texts, or you can check this post which has less texts but I put in bold my favorite ones (they also have download links)!
Personally, when I started I did a mix of option 1 and option 3, which is mixing up texts, just because I love novels and I really wanted to mix up my old texts with some modern novels and movies/tv shows.
3) Option 3 is mixing it up! Let me explain a bit better!
I have here the old “How to start arthuriana” post with mixed up old and new texts (here is another “How to start”). To summarize it, I do think that the main “old texts” that people cite and use as references are  History of the Kings of Britain (Geoffrey of Monmouth),  Four Romances (Chrétien de Troyes) and  Le Morte d'Arthur Volume 1 + Volume 2 (Thomas Malory) (with Sir Gawain and the Green Knight  and  The Wedding of sir Gawain and dame Ragnell if you are interested in Gawain).
Mixing them up with good novels for me was a plus, because I love seeing how stories are re-imagined. What helped me at the beginning was reading novels that encompass the whole of Arthur’s life, from his birth to his death, adding various re-interpretations within. This ended up putting in my mind a vague order of the main arthurian themes and elements that are used and re-used. Some examples are:
Sword at Sunset (Sutcliff), if you like historical novels
The Once and Future King (White)
Guinevere trilogy by Persia Woolley
Merlin trilogy by Mary Stewart + The Wicked Day (Mary Stewart)
The Pendragon (Catherine Christian)
Firelord (Godwin)
Warlord Chronicles (Bernard Cornwell), also historical
Any of Mike Ashley’s short stories collections
Some character specific good novels:
Arthur: Sword at Sunset (Sutcliff) or The Great Captains (Treece) which is Welsh inspired
Morgana: I am Morgan le Fay (Springer) or Morgana (Rio)
Guinevere: Persia Woolley’s trilogy or Queen of Camelot (McKenzie)
Bedivere: The Pendragon (Catherine Christian)
Kay: Exiled from Camelot (Baldry) and Idylls of the Queen (Karr)
Gawain: Down the Long Wind (Bradshaw)
Mordred: Idylls of the Queen (Karr) or The Winter Prince (Wein)
Lancelot: Guinevere novels tend to have good Lancelot, otherwise there’s Vansittart’s Lancelot or Lancelot by Gwen Rowley
Ragnelle: Gawain (Gwen Rowley)
Percival: Corbenic (Fisher)
Lady of the Lake: Here Lies Arthur (Reeves) or The Book of Mordred (Velde)
Merlin: Mary Stewart’s trilogy
Agravaine: Camelot’s Blood (Zettel)
Galahad: Blessed Bastard (Lehman) but it is hard to find!
Regarding tv shows and movies, I have written here a list of arthurian tv shows in order of my personal preference, with small explanation to why, but I do think for someone who is diving into arthuriana the classic tv shows and movies are:
The Legend of King Arthur (BBC) tv show
Camelot (musical, any version)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Excalibur (1981)
The Sword in the Stone (Disney)
The Knights of the Round Table (50s movie)
Merlin (1998) miniseries
The Mists of Avalon miniseries
Plus, here is a list of movies divided by character and a list of tv shows divided by character.
Other nice and fun arthurian things to start are:
This amazingly funny Legends summarized video
For any “Who is who???” Bruce’s dictionary is an amazing resource
I hope this helps! :D
