animatings actually easy as shit heres how to animate a quick movement in 5 frames

(works better with small things, if there is larger movement, then you probably should have more than 5 frames but whatever):

key frame 1 (start position):

key frame 2 (end position):

now we have the start and end, we make a middle stage:

the pink and green are the previous and next frames showing. its called onion skin and is good for drawing inbetweens 👍

here is the middle stage without onion skin:

and then, using the first frame, we make an ease in frame, which is just the first frame with a teensy tiny bit of movement towards the goal (onion skin showing frame 1 on the left and no onion skin on the right):

then we get an overshoot frame, which is the final frame but extended a bit further so when it plays, theres this spring-like bounceback effect (it makes it more realistic). (onion skin showing last frame on the left and no onion skin on the right):

now make sure that the key frames (first and final frames) are on for multiple frames since they are when the movement is still. the program i use, FireAlpaca, has an option to change the amount of frames a frame is onscreen for, but you can duplicate frames manually if needed

or

the amount of frames the image needs to be onscreen for depends on the framerate of the whole animation (how fast each frame is onscreen for). note that higher framerate does not necessarily equal smoother animation and an animation can still be pretty darn smooth even with 8 fps (frames per second) but the standard for animation is 24 fps. its all a matter of how you animate. i like to do 8 or 12 fps cuz i dont have to draw as many inbetweens teehee

^ i have increased the key frames frame count to 12 frames since the framerate was increased.

the movement is faster in 24 fps because the amount of frames are the same, but the more inbetweens you add it will be slower. this is a tutorial for animating with 5 frames, though, so who cares. plus if this is the effect you want then whatever

i personally need to do a bit more reflecting on the ethics of AI art. i have mixed feelings about folks who generate slop clearly based on one artists' exact style and majorly profit from it. there are a fair number of AI art creators on Patreon, etc that do this and they are pulling in a not-insignificant amount of money by generating simulacra of a specific artists' work at a rate that the original artist could never hope to achieve by hand. that feels a bit off to me, on like a micro, interpersonal ethical level. not to discount the larger economic and societal factors at play, but it just feels...dishonest? im aware this is kind of "vibes" based thinking so im willing to examine it further.

be honest: can you name actually even one person who is to this day “generating slop clearly based on one artist’s exact style”? you have to be able to name which artist, too.

and how is this any different from, say, an etsy store with a 3D printer vs somebody who carves wood by hand? i feel like this is the exact same “real art needs real effort” argument but displaced because you know that doesn’t really make sense; for years buzzfeed writers and youtubers have been taking my posts from tumblr, and slapping them on another website and making a less-funny joke about them (or just straight up reading them out) and obviously they’re being paid to do it.

as it turns out, the majority of “work” in this world is “slop”. because we live in a world that doesn’t revolve around art, but making orange cells in spreadsheets green. these AI artists who are being “deceitful” by generating art of a particular style — twenty years ago the exact same arguments were levied against digital artists who were copying REAL artists’ work with much easier and simpler tools for a fraction of the effort 😨 like when you say it like this it just becomes pretty obvious that you don’t actually know how it works, or the process that goes into generating AI art. a lot of people on this website think these folks are literally just typing in “hillside scene in the style of vincent van gogh” and like yeah you could probably generate something from that prompt but the trick isn’t just generating an image from nothing, it’s getting it to look like what’s in your head — and that’s like… a learned skill basically akin to programming.

Worlds RD thoughts-

it was so good, it really didn't feel like 5 and a half hours- i didn't look at rankings or protocols til i got to the hotel (and omg😨😭 but more on that later)

it's really worth seeing the early groups to understand that making worlds minimums is no small feat and that these teams work so hard and care so much to polish their programs to this level - it really felt like from the start, teams were rising to the occasion and putting their best foot forward. and then group by group, the overall level goes up til by the last few, you see just how good these top teams have to be

Ritter/Brykalov have really grown - their lifts are standouts, and they perform with confidence now. Marina's Ukrainian team, Larson/Kapran, has a great RD - it's Fosse translated to ice, and it's a complete thought - music and choreo envisioned for skating in this seamless way - it's so good. Lauriault/LeGac's RD is to the same music, and it's fun, but Marina's is next level - and Andrei Kapran is doing it justice - they're a little unbalanced as a team - she's committing well also, but he's a stronger skater and sharper performer. watching this program makes it stand out how much a pastiche a lot of other RDs are

there are a number of younger teams who are a work in progress in some ways but who showed stellar qualities - Milla Ruud Reitan & Nikolaj Majorov have showmanship and flair (i loved the messages on the jumbotron to the audience from the teams, too - theirs was "this is how we do it in Sweden"). the Japanese team Yoshida & Morita skate with so much confidence and have a great RD (Cathy Reed is pretty impressive as a choreographer and coach from what i can tell, and it's not too shabby, having the IAMO coaches there for you). they were 6th in BV today and missed the FD by just 2 placements

Soucisse & Firus look freer than they have in some other programs. this RD highlighted a little bit how hard it can be to translate dance to ice in a way that the skating is part of the dance, not like they're doing dance moves with their upper half while they skate

Jean-Luc poked his head into the arena to yell "Allez!!" at Alicia and Paul (most of the time you heard "Allez" today it was one of the IAM skaters) at Alicia and Paul and then came in with his parents, including Olympian and British ice dance champion mom Sharon, and later on, Kaitlin

Alicia & Paul's score felt way too low - they were really dancing and had beautiful glide in hold. there's a certain kind of flow and quality that when teams skate like that, it immediately makes me emotional, and they had that today. their skating feels deeper into the ice and more mature than a couple of the teams who scored above them

Holly with the sparkliest, shiny costumes always. i like this RD, and they're skating with more security and conviction. Janse van Renseburg/Steffan - this was the best performance i ever saw them give - just high energy and in the music. Bekker/Hernandez really enjoyable - they feel like a younger team still, but they're charming and perform really well together

ok, the Mrazeks were a revelation today lol just wow with the speed and power - a level up from everyone before. and i don't think it was like this last Worlds. it's impressive - i was holding my breath. their RD has a terrible music cut - it's just one song smash cut into the next with very little sense to it

Davis/Smolkin look sharper? he has that look like he feels the ice through his feet in a really tactile way. deep edges. i don't find them the most musical of teams

when the next group came on i almost cried lol it's something to suddenly see a bunch of teams you love take the ice at once -

Pirihara just make me happy - she exudes joy and is somehow funny at the same time. and they covered big ice in their first set of twizzles. speaking of big ice, Olivia and Tim are looking like partners - balanced - they had some level issues today. but ooh they're a dynamic team

ok. the Taschlers - they're amazing, powerful as their reputation says - but i feel like they're skating like they don't expect to be embraced, not by the judges, not by the crowd, and you can't put expectations on the audience - we feel it. you have to do your thing and let everyone respond to you and not try to control the situation (more on that later lol). but i'm worried for her - she seems so down. i hope she's ok

skating after these high wattage teams, Hannah & Ye look a little smaller in their skating and a little younger. but they're SO musical and so very detailed in their performance. this RD suits them right now better - i hope someday they go back to something like their Gloria Gaynor that builds and builds because when they have a little more power, they could tear the roof off

Theo was singing through their RD - he and Loicia really have their own quirky personal style, and i love it. also, this crowd loves cartwheels. no matter what, they would cheer cartwheels. a large part of the crowd loves rotational lifts, especially if they're fast or she's upside down or flips a lot - they cheered every single one haha it made me realize that most teams position their RoLi the same way - they start to the right of the judges stand and rotate across their stand and wind up to the left of them- almost every single one goes that way. why is that

ok, we're at group 7 lol now that i'm writing this out, it really was a long event haha

noooooo T/V - i felt so bad for them that it happened on the midline. and Allison 💔- they missed the FD 😭 hopefully T/V can come back tomorrow and grab the 2 spots in Milano. i was really enjoying R/A's performance - they skate bigger than you can tell on a stream- like you can tell they have power on a screen, but not how much

Green/Parsons are lovely dancers. i was surprised they looked a little less dynamic in person- not as big as the music, unexpectedly. they really commit to this choreo with the cocked wrists and fists, and i wish i knew the exact reference for it

CPom did so well! nailing their levels, looking strong but also so dancey - and they skate more in hold than so many teams. that score was so exciting - they cracked the ceiling into the 80s for the first time 🥳

LaLa cover big ice and make that look so easy, and such beautiful unison on their midline - they really move across the ice as one, their spacing was the same throughout. and they're so musical - really hearing and expressing the changes in feel and the accents in the music

the IAMO and MIDA coaches sat together in the stands to watch the last group skate

ok i loved getting to see Rasputin - it's such a good RD - huge credit to Geoffrey for saving the StaLi - i don't know how he did it - it looked like he didn't have hold of her at the start, and somehow he was strong enough to pull her in and save it. they lost about 3 points on it, which would have had them in 7th instead of 9th

Piper and Paul being silly but flowy - they have the glide too - i still think about their Wuthering Heights from last Worlds for the sweep and grandeur it had. it feels like without the crowd totally behind them, they weren't quite as amped

Ashley Wagner was asking the teams a question in the kiss & cry during the wait for the scores, and she actually mentioned that Piper & Paul beat CB at 4CC while CB were on the ice about to skate, which felt a little rude

Madi and Evan definitely had the crowd more than any other team. performance-wise they just look classy. expensive, if that's a thing. they probably did get a home boost, but they also performed well. i never feel emotional watching them ever. but they are impressively expert performers

ok. so a lot of the messages from the teams were nice - gratitude to the crowd, happy to be here - the Japanese team's was "this is our first worlds, we're having so much fun!" - or they were funny, like LaLa's "hold my beer" - or the Ukrainian team - "Slava Ukraine"

F/G saying "we love your support. let's hear you scream" felt presumptuous. and indeed, the entire section i was sitting in was quiet during and after their skate, while they gave Madi and Evan a standing ovation. i think the loudest cheering for F/G was coming from the section that was the loudest for the RoLi's and cartwheels, honestly

Charlene & Marco - i'm starting to wonder if they (especially he) are pushing through because of the home Olympics but either don't have their heart 100% in it any more no matter how much they want it, or someone's not physically 100%. also, they used to nail their levels. they had a little twizzle trouble today, but also a level 1 PSt

Aether Foundation is a totally not shady corporation and Lusamine is a very good person that people can absolutely trust 👍

While I love Vi's team, the fact that he has a full team doesn't really fit with story I created for him anymore 😔 Now his Pokémon are only Moss the Crobat and Queen the Milotic.

Vi can create portals but because she's kinda bad at using this power she can't really create large ones. The portals are only big enough to put her arm through them.

She also doesn't really hide her ability so there are some pictures of her and the portals around the internet. 

Lusamine somehow finds those pictures, sees a teen with portal powers and is like "I can use them". So she sends someone to seek Vi out so that she can speak to them. When this person finds Vi Lusamine talks about this special program Aether Foundation is doing where they find people with special abilities to help them learn control and stuff. The fact that they can travel through Alola is just a nice little bonus. And while Vi is kinda suspicious she does want to learn to control her portal powers better, so she accepts. 

When she arrives Lusamine does what she can do best - manipulate children. She wants to see if Vi's portals can be used to access ultra beasts.
