I have to tell yall something that none of you are going to like....

It's not the same gear.

I know, I know, we all want it to be the same gear from when Jayce and Viktor first got the Arcane to work for them, we all want Viktor to have kept it with him for sentimental reasons, i know. Trust me, I do too. But it's not

Don't get me wrong, it still represents the same thing! Their relationship, the whole "two sides of the same coin" thing, what they've built, how connected they are. The corruption that's taken over. It still means the same, it's just a different gear.

"But Nexa how do you know?!" I hear you scream. I'm so glad you asked.

Let's look at the gear in question

Do you see the problem yet?

They're very different sizes. The original gear is much smaller, and the center hole is wider in relation. Viktor's corrupted gear has a smaller opening but is honestly overall pretty large as far as gears go.

Aside from the increased detail, I think this shot shows pretty well that the center is too different for it to be the same. The animation in Arcane is honestly too meticulous to miss that.

Which makes sense, Viktor and Jayce wouldn't have really had time to grab anything from that lab as they left. And Viktor didn't hold on to the gear, he let it float away. Even if he did remember exactly what it looked like, he'd have to go find it while the enforcers and Heimerdinger were already there, and I highly doubt they were inclined to let that happen.

So instead I propose a different solution! Viktor grabbed that gear on his way out of the lab for the last time, likely planning to never again see Jayce - or at least all they had built together - after that.

All in all, this distinction doesn't really matter and please keep writing heartbreaking stuff where it is the same gear cause I feed off that shit. I just wanted to share this particular observation. And also I think Viktor grabbing a gear on his way out as a reminder is equally heartbreaking.

i do think the skz codes that are strongly themed and follow the theme closely are the best episodes of the show (ie: why cant we stop seungmin, food fighter, innie graduation, haunted school, skz-ary town, the board game one, the first mafia one)

From your answers, I understood correctly that when you come up with a story, like UtR, you come up with figuratively speaking, a train station where all the characters get on their train. And you know where that train is going to take everyone. But what obstacles and stops you don't think of in advance and the picture in your head will appear as you write new chapters?

That's basically it! (Though I often like to think of it as lights on a string of fairy lights because that's just prettier to me).

Also I don't even have all the characters at the beginning of the train journey. In the case of Underline the Red, I didn't even know Kenneth was going to exist as an interest for Faber until like, you know, I was writing that chapter.

This is why when folks ask me - especially early on in a story - how long it's going to be or how something is going to happen, I'm very genuine when I say 'I don't know!'

That being said I do think of a lot of it in advance, it's just not etched in stone. It's more like having 100 different cuts of a movie scene. Maybe in one scene a gun goes off. In another there's sex. In another there's an argument. In another there's a new character. In another there's an argument but different. In another there's a good conversation. I can play all of those, often slightly changing the script, the staging, the direction, even the stage and the ambience and the lighting.

I think of thousands of versions of the stories ahead of time, which is also hilariously why I can also say - I don't know. I have touch stones I know I'm heading to. I know I'm heading towards Faber/Caleb reconciliation, I know a couple of the things that will really push that forward.

Everything else is me sitting in a screening room in front of my mind, or standing like a director on a movie set, and watching everything happen with my camera, and trying to figure out which is the most relevant / interesting / fun / cool / immersive / hot thing to happen next.

So yeah it's not really accurate to say I don't think of it in advance. Thinking of something in advance doesn't mean knowing it for sure. Right? Even people who get on a train think of the stops they're heading to, even if what they imagine doesn't match what they see when they get there. I don't know anyone who can write just...never thinking about it until they sit down to write. I'm sure they exist, especially the folks with no real imagination, but that's not me.

Imagination isn't fact, until it's down on the page. And because I don't plot things formally (as in, by writing them down in advance in a chapter or plot plan, like a lot of authors), I'm imagining a lot. But that still doesn't mean I know for sure what's coming.

That gives me opportunities to let Kenneth on the train :D

I think IDW Elita-1 stands out to me as being particularly good in that continuity because she wasn't significantly impacted by massive retcons, her personality and motivations are solid and never went through inexplicable changes, her story and arc felt fully satisfying, she clearly grew as a person, and she had enough time on-panel to be a major, memorable character. It's kind of shocking to me to recall how few characters meet all of these same criteria. I really liked Dirge every time he showed up, but he couldn't possibly be my favorite character, because think of how little he was even in the comic! And it precludes a lot of characters from IDW's first phase being standout characters because so many of the ones who seemed like they'd be important just vanished (e.g. Sixshot).
