Jaune: Hey Yang, can I ask for a favor real quick?

Yang: Depends on the favor.

Jaune: I was wondering if I could borrow bumblebee this Friday night.

Yang: hahaha hahaha ..... no, you can't borrow my baby.

Jaune: Please, I know how to ride motorcycles. I'll be super careful with her.

Yang: Yeah, no

Jaune unlocks a practice pistol from the armory

Jaune: What if we bet on it.

He says, taking a few shots at a target down range and missing terribley

Yang: Pfft okay, jaune, how about this land any of your next 5 shots in the middle of your target, and I'll let you borrow Bumblebee.

Jaune reloads this pistol.

Jaune: Really? Is that a bet?

He extends his hand for a handshake.

Yang: Yeah, it's a bet. It's not like you're going to actually do it.

Yang says shaking jaunes hand.

As soon as jaune lets go, he lines up himself and gets all 5 shots in the middle.

Yang in disbelief: Wait, what?!

Jaune: Yang, im trained by Pyrrha, and im friends with your sister. Did you think I didn't know how to use a gun effectively. Anyways I'll be picking up those keys from you on Friday.

Began season three with episode one to four of RWBY... This is already scaring me. And nothing really bad has happened yet.

Season 03, Episode 01: Round One

- Good Gods. The animation and art has improved SO MUCH!!! THE LANDSCAPE LOOKS AMAZING!!!

This means they have been here before. Considering how they are part of the same team, it's not too much of a leap to assume they would come... together. AGHHHHHHHHH!!!! 💖🫶🏻❤️‍🔥. Don't mind me. About to dive into AO3 for this now...

- It's Weiss' treat! Declined... Blake is planning to run away with her food. 😂. Such mood!

- Pyrrha, Blake's savoir!!! Team RWBY is fed and happy, while Weiss may be entering a food coma. Team JNPR has many varying reactions. Jaune might burst from the overload. Pyrrha is polite and full. Nora is happy and healthy, while Ren is asking if they should have eaten before a fight. No more Monty Oum's voice. 🥺

- Nora advises Jaune to aim his barf at the enemy. Ren thinks it's disgusting but if it does happen... I get why they are friends now. 😆✨

- Team JNPR is questioning their chances. Nora is providing valid defence about their shot at winning. Being Jaune is it's own quality. 😂. And now Nora is playing an even better devil's advocate... Ren and her are orphans? ...Whoa. Nora is hyperventilating so bad, she has literally lost all colour. Oooooof. Been there.

- Pyrrha has a good point; now they can fight with real guidelines and not murderers. 😂

- Ruby wants more when they graduate. Weiss is depressed about not being able to pay. Team JNPR receives an official invitation for their battle, because they late. 😆

- Nora is emotionally done. Jaune is physically done. Good Gods. What have they done to Team JNPR?!!?!

- Team RWBY has entered the arena. So have Emerald and Mercury. Yang saw them.

- Pan to the bad guy team. And they already know who will win?! Of course.

- Oh my Gods. Cinder's popcorn kernel popping in her fingers... Hot. Pun intended. 😆

- Team JNPR of Beacon vs Team BRNZ of Shade... There's a school called Shade?!? What do they teach them there? How to throw their school? 😂

- Ooooooh! The arena randomises it's elemental attributes and division after each match. For some reason this reminds me of Pokemon.

- Holy hell. I cannot stop focusing on the great work they have done. The end credits are beginning and holy shirtballs. It looks so GOOOOOOOOD!

- OH MY GODS. This song goes hard... "Maybe it's the pool of blood the innocents will lay in, when in the end you have failed to save them..." 😳

- Is Ren voiced by a relative of Monty Oum from now? Neath Oum is written among the names of voice actors for Team JNPR. That's amazing. 🫶🏻✨

- Beacon's going to get attacked?!?! There's monsters taking the school by storm...

- "Mirrors will shatter. Crushed by the weight of the world." As Ozpin and Glynda stare at said mirrors. Ironwood and his army is the world. OH MY GODS.

- New characters! Weiss is looking up to a lady. Is this Winter? She is her older sister, if I remember right.

- Yang and Ruby are with a man. This must be Qrow.

- Huh. Winter and Qrow are not on good terms. OOOOOOoooooooof.

- Qrow has red eyes?! And is that a picture of his team floating by? It has him, Ruby and Yang's father, Yang's mother and another lady with a white cape. Almost hidden. Huh. That must be Ruby's mum? She wore a similar thing back in season one's openings.

- Team RWBY and JNPR are holding hands while falling together. And then the latter's members stumble away in the air, leaving only RWBY. Oh no.

Season 03, Episode 02: New Challengers

- "Their dying eyes... are wide and white like snow."

- This season is going to kill me. ✨

- Team JNPR's match has begun. One of their opponents' team members ran in the opposite direction of them. Hmmm.

- Ooooooh! Sniper person. Jaune has good instincts. Retreat!

- Ren down. Nora is one of Port's favourite students. She can use charge to power her semblance. Truly Thor.

- LoLLL! The guy electrocuting her has been informed by Doctor Oobleck that Nora will now channel it against him to send him flying.

- Jaune truly is a good leader.

- This opponent team member is sending discs flying at Pyrrha and Jaune. That's a good tactic. Reminds me of a God I am aware of.

- Weiss is noting how far Jaune has come. Ugh. Being platonic friends suits them well!

- I agree with Yang though. He has got nothing on Pyrrha. Who is now taking on two guys at once. ❤️‍🔥

- Weiss is rooting for Neptune from the stands. Neptune tries to turn on the charm for the team in front, Weiss has changed sides. YASSSSSSSS!!! 😂

- Oh my Gods. Neptune really thinks he is ALL THAT. I want his unwarranted confidence.

- Desert and the ocean arena. Neptune's afraid of water. Ooooooof.

- He ran off to the barren lands. His teammates are confused. LoLLL.

Season 03, Episode 03: It's Brawl in the Family

- "Winter is coming." -Jon Snow, and probably Weiss at one point in her life. 😂

- Did she curtsy? Oh my Gods. Ruby is in her natural state, Weiss just punched her dolt.

- And I thought Weiss was tightly wound... Team RWBY's victory could have been better according to Winter, who be a regal queen it looks like, and Weiss wants to impress her so bad. 🥺

- "Silence, you boob." -Winter, after smacking Weiss on the head.

- Awwwwwwwww! Winter does care. Me like her. Weiss considers Ruby her friend. Ruby is grinning about Weiss being called boob.

- Winter Schnee doesn't seem impressed.

Season 03, Episode 04: Lessons Learned

Inspired by a reel that I saw on IG @project_summer2023 and for the format discord that @meili-sheep did for heartsteel (bringing back mystic messenger also gave me nostalgia 🤧)

Been thinking about Jaune and Weiss parallels lately.

How they both come from big families with long lines of huntsmen heritage. How Weiss' house is full of conflict, but she had both pressure and opportunity in equal measure to live up to that family name. Whereas Jaune seems to have a lot of fond memories of home, but was given no opportunity to follow in his ancestors footsteps. How he had to sneak his way into Beacon just for a chance to be the hero.

How Weiss acted like she was la crème de la crème but had so much to learn, while Jaune knew he was so far behind everyone else that he struggled to see how much talent he had. How quickly he grew.

I also keep thinking about how they fiddle with the Princess and Knight roles. Starting out as Snow White the Ice Queen and Jeanne d'Arc the Greenhorn Knight, but by V9 Weiss is heir to neither kingdom nor crown, and Jaune has become The Rusted Knight incarnate. I wonder where they'll go from here with both those archetypes of theirs having crumbled quite a bit...

My girl, Weiss, is really down bad. Between purring out ‘mature’ and her little speech to Jaune about how good of a person he is, she may as well have been shouting it from the rooftops!

For characters so built on growth, it is only right that their ship be all about it too. That’s something I’ve really appreciated about this ship, how it’s been slowly building up over the course of the show, and now we’re finally reaching that crescendo.

Anyway, I hope you all appreciate this little meme I made while on break from my next rwby edit comic. That one should be done soon. I do really like the scene this came from, and volume 9 in general. I definitely feel the Office reference fit this scene rather nicely. The volume had some great character moments and resolved some long running plot points in a very satisfying way, imo.

The main problem with Ruby gillman movie is that it sends a message that "bigotry is actually justified and your racist grandparents are right". The second, closely related problem is it's villain.

Firstly, if we look at the film without the spoiler-y marketing, Chelsea/Neressa is written as a twist villain. Like Hans Frozen type twist villain, with little foreshadowing and those "sympathetic" scenes that actually don't amount to anything and might just as well be a lie. Even with the marketing, i think the movie still tricked people into thinking that Chelsea might be a misunderstood villain or have a redemption arc or what not. And twist villains could work well, usually if their turn to villainy makes sense with their preestablished goals and personality (eg. Disney's Atlantis). Or a liar villain could work well if the audience knows of their malicious plans, but the heroes stay in the dark (eg. Scar from Lion King). In general, if the twist or reveal makes the story/conflict less interesting and/or didn't have proper foreshadowing, viewers are bound to dislike it.

Secondly, Chelsea is our only mermaid. And she is, well, evil. It would have been better if we had other good mermaid characters, but she is the only one, which, coupled with Gramamah's generous description of mermaids, makes it seem like all mermaids are as evil as she is.

Thirdly, yes, stories for young children about pure good fighting pure evil are generally fine, it teaches them right and wrong, so they can later consume media with more complex lessons. But in those stories the good guys are usually the underdogs fighting an oppressive evil. In mermaid vs kraken conflict, it's actually mermaids who are at a disadvantage. Krakens are big rulers ("protectors") of the ocean with superpowers. The characters themselves admit that Granmamah is a warlord. Mermaids are small, weak and need a magic trident to even match the power of krakens. Their only "advantage" is being popular with humans, while krakens are feared and hated, but humans have no effect on the story or the conflict. If the story was that mermaids are actually more powerful rulers of the ocean, or the kraken family were the just rules but got conquered/overthrown by evil mermaids, or if both species were of equal power ruling their own parts of the ocean and mermaids decided to go and conquer the peaceful kraken kingdom. Then the good vs evil conflict would have looked less like "how dare these evil inferior minorities challenge the rule of our superior race".

Speaking of which. Ruby's first instinct, even after finding out that "mermaids are actually evil" from her granma, is to judge Chelsea as her own person and assume that mermaids can't be actually evil. Which is, you know, a pretty fair and mature response. When she hears that mermaids suffer from terrible conditions, she actively tries to fight what she sees as injustice. But what lesson does she learn? That she should never question her elders, since they do know better. The story is fighting for the status quo to stay the same, while Ruby is punished to trying to change and improve it.

That's all i can say for now. Other complaints i have are:

humans are virtually useless to the story (including the love interest, tho he had some cute moments), they are just damsels-in-distress and trophies for Ruby to save and get approval from. This movie just as well could happen all under the sea with some minor tweaks.

The human designs are weird and uncanny. Otherwise the visuals are fine.

Ruby's arc is kind of all over the place with her main arc being the classic "believe in yourself", which she mainly gains through hanging out with Chelsea. But isn't Chelsea supposed to be the villain who "leads Ruby astray" from being a good citizen who is not skipping school, lying to her mom or ignoring her friends and crush? Make it make sense, movie.

The thing is, even if Ruby is immortal (one could argue amortal, she isn't really alive or dead in a sense) and has a healing factor, the opponents she faces are often those that negate said immortality and either slow down the healing factor or completely stop it from working. Be it by their weapon, their skills or simply a natural ability they possess.

Ruby had canonically died three times in the story. Two of those times were because she was overpowered by her enemies and killed outright. The third was different - she sacrificed herself, blowing herself up along with her enemy to save everyone else.

Why bring this up?

Because even though Ruby had been brought back by the Remnant Dragon Balls each time, the fact remained that she had died. Death left its mark, no matter who or what you were. The first two times changed her. She became more serious and colder, determined never to experience that again and, more importantly, to prevent her family, friends, or allies from having to face it themselves.

For most of the first five Sagas, this mindset defined how Ruby fought. She rarely let herself enjoy a fight, always focusing on ending things as quickly as possible. In some ways, she became similar to Blair, her Eternal Rival, but without Blair’s enjoyment of battle. Ruby was more focused, almost detached, and always calculating.

Her third death, the one where she sacrificed herself, was different. It wasn’t just a loss but a choice, and it left a bigger impact on her. She spent nearly five years in the Afterlife after that, reasoning that most of the threats to Remnant had come because of her. And honestly, she wasn’t wrong. Without her presence, the planet enjoyed five years of peace.

When Ruby finally returned for 24 hours to attend a festival Blair was hosting, a new enemy attacked. She was revived halfway through the arc, but by then, she had changed. The time she spent in the Afterlife had given her a chance to heal. She wasn’t as cold or serious anymore. She was more relaxed and easygoing, allowing herself to enjoy life again, like how she used to be a long time ago.

This change was obvious during said arc. Ruby didn’t approach fights with the same cold, calculated mindset she had before. She faced them with more confidence and a renewed sense of joy, no longer weighed down by her past.

The shift in Ruby's characters didn't erase her past strugges, but showed how she grew from them. The trauma she endured, her choices, and the time she spent reflecting all contributed to a more balanced version of herself. She learned to let go of some of the guilt that had weighed her down, accepting that she couldn't control everything and that it was okay to live for herself, too. Ruby didn't lose her stubborn determination or confidence - she simply stopped letting those things consume her.

By the end of the first part of the story, Ruby felt more like herself again, but with the maturity and perspective she gained from her experiences. She wasn't just a warrior fighting to protect others anymore - she was a Vacosian who could genuinely enjoy life and fighting again. It was this balance she should have strived for in the first place and what ultimately allowed her to tackle challenges with a newfound, boundless confidence.

I still have an underlying gripe with the throughline of Vol 9 in so much of it in hinging on this idea that WBY weren’t noticing what Ruby was going through and that they didn’t have reason to because she’s always been the one to pick the team up and power through.

Because like…Ruby feeling crushed by leadership or experiencing self doubt is something a lot of characters have noticed the previous two volumes AND have acted on?

Qrow sees her sitting by herself when they get licensed and give her a pep talk.

Blake sees Ruby doubting their choices and the situation and gives her a pep talk.

Ruby has an outburst and throws her hands up and Yang runs after her and gives her a pep talk.

Weiss doesn’t get a chance to talk to Ruby, but she’s consistently one of the most emotionally perceptive characters in the show.

And I’m sure you could argue that some elements of each pep talk were inadvertently harmful (feeding into Summer hero worship, making her someone they all look up to, etc), but they aren’t mind readers and that’s not my point.

My point is that Vol 9 had to turn WBY oblivious or constantly introduce narrative contrivances to get Ruby to where she was in Ep 7. And it’s nothing new — you’re going to see the marionette strings in most puppet shows. But it’s just a bit…clumsy, and I think was a bit unfair to WBY.
