I lied, not 3-5 business days we are processing this now and here and live. strap in buckle up idc that it's a 40 second clip. Im not insane Im dedicated.

the setup: very predictable, very standard question, anyone could have seen it coming from a mile away, we will probably be seeing it more. answer should be equally standard and rehearsed and boring, which it is. there are implications of value attached but again, such a standard nothing burger question the answer should hold equally little meaning. there will not be a rookie on this grid this year not answering with the experience of their teammate and how helpful their teammate has been. it does not matter whether their teammate actually was any of that.

the possible outcomes we could have had: - nico does not acknowledge the question and lets gabi answer on his own; gabi gives a standard response - nico turns it into a joke (think, button to alonso "would you want jenson as your teammate), "threatening" gabi into a positive statement in order to "protect" his person from the threat of value being attached to the answer; gabi plays along, either awkardly or with humour to match what we got:

nico does turn it into a joke, but he aborts halfway through (wagging eyebrows -> shrug; not elaborating further (as button did with alonso) and letting his non verbal response be wholly implication and up for interpretation)

the idiot goes for fucking wagging his eyebrows. that is the least clear sign of communication on this fucking planet istg. is it flirty? is it mischievous? is it mocking, is it daring? is he trying to off-set gabi, is even aware enough to do that or did he just. act. without thinking. what are you doing

gabi acknowledges nico's attempts at turning the situation more light-hearted, but does not play along; he seems momentarily put off by it, but then returns to his standard pre baked answer. personal highlights being gabi pointing out how nice nico has been to him and how they sometimes have chats (up to you what to make of that. personally I will be interpreting this in ways but they're too elaborate to put down here) but ofc haven't driven yet (very much an implication that they have not shared intel or anything about driving/cars/tracks)

gabi seems to finish speaking and looks to nico for confirmation. nico tells him "yeah, go on, that part was good, keep going."

now, this is where things get juicy. this part right here. three ways to go with this:

nico noticed that gabi seemed to have finished without actually. finishing like he does at the end and covers the gap with encouragement. this premeditates nico has the social awareness to notice this gap and lack of finisher, is familiar enough with gabi and his speech patterns to recognize it as such, is willing to bridge this gap for him, and that whatever non verbal communication happened when gabi looked at nico confirmed any or all of these (whether gabi "asked" for nico to help him out as he was losing his train of thought or nico just decided to take that step is up to interpretation as we don't actually see gabi looking at nico proper)

nico wanted to keep playing along with the "joke" he established earlier by squeezing gabi for more flattery - or genuinely wanted to hear more flattery, depending on whether you think the joke was done in the first place in order to protect his person and have any value gabi's statement might have attached to it not affect him, because he obviously does not take the question seriously in the first place, so why would he care about the answer? this premeditates that nico cares about answers to such questions.

nico wanted to put gabi on the spot by both putting him into a position where he has to talk more when it seems he has finished and on top of that adding mocking praise to make it seem as though gabi is not capable of answering questions on his own and needs guidance throughout such a simple task. it's a power play. this premeditates that nico is a dick.

gabi takes it in stride - whatever it ends up being in your opinion - and finishes off with some more flattery and a "proper" finishing statement by saying that he is looking forward to abu dhabi and that he thinks the partnership is a good thing. conclusions based on gabi's reaction:

if those were heckling attempts by nico they failed - miserably - and gabi is either already used to them or not recognizing them as such (considering they are vague enough that you cannot determine whether they are heckling attempts in the first place).

if this was a genuine interaction of nico helping gabi, he messed up his social signalling both before and during the conversation, as he previously turned the question into a joke. if the tone and mood of "joke" is set, then any praise or encouragement will get doubted for its truthfulness. personally I do not give him the mastermind credit to have both of these be intentional - that is to say, first joking and then praising as a heckling attempt - but as always you are free to disagree and interpret whatever you like.

if this was nico trying to protect himself and his integrity by making it look as though he does not care what gabi thinks of their partnership, he managed to do so in the most superficial and superfluous of ways. he "ticked off" the boxes of acting up nonchalance, but failed to actually get the whole picture across (aborting whatever he did in the beginning; not being charming/charismatic enough to get gabi to play along) which results in a feeling of awkwardness and the impression that he lacks social awareness (should have thought more before attempting to joke; should not have attempted to joke with someone who he is not in a relationship like that with)

if gabi genuinely wanted to flatter nico he would have given less of a pre baked response; the desire to flatter nico could have been either because he just wants to be in his good books or because nico has indeed been helpful and kind enough to earn such flattery

if gabi feels overly intimidated by nico he is doing a very good job covering it, though you cannot say he is completely immune to the fuckery going on as he does stumble multiple times throughout his response and yes, looks to nico for confirmation. this could be due to any own inherent awkwardness (for example from being under such scrutiny and spotlight for the first time), due to the horrendous job at both verbal and non verbal signalling nico has been doing the entire interaction, or other reasons we dont know (such as emotions regarding nico, nico's approval or disapproval, or whatever else you can imagine, really)

overall, the clip is quite carefully "sanitized" by both parties involved, and there is a clear goal of establishing a close-ish dynamic for the viewer, but not every arrow hits its mark. and I am. so intrigued by that.
