Halo Infinite's "The Weapon" is probably my favorite character concept in the entire series because of how inherently ridiculous it is. Whose thought was that in order to defeat Cortana, we need to clone her and hand that clone to her Ex-Husband and ask him to kill the only person he ever truly loved. Halsey really just handed Chief his and Cortana's bastard daughter and expected this not to backfire horrendously.

I killed Esparza like you guys wanted. This better not happen in future stories. I'm still catching up on words I owe people and wips but always feel free to send requests.

For all her time spent in the depths of Zeta Halo, she is very young.

Riding with Chief is exhilarating. It is hope, and triumph, hard fought and won.

She sees the dead and mourns them; the Spartans found with injuries from a specialized energy blade, the marines and crew scattered across the ring, the skeletons of aircraft forming their own graveyards.

She had seen Spartan Griffin's death up close, felt his biosigns sputter and die, IFF reading deceased. She hadn't known him, but she mourned. For the Spartan in front of her and the one she was wrapped around. Her tiny hand around his wounded one. Back when the firewalls were strong and before the code word and the Spire and Her.

This new approaching death up close was a million times worse. Chief was not closed off, not to her. Not as he trembled so slightly as he tried to staunch the blood. Not as his biosigns shot through the roof, crisis and training keeping him still as stone as his brain lit up and his heart pounded.

Their pilot was dying and there was nothing he could do.

The details burn into her matrix but she will not look away as their Fernando struggles to breathe. She will be here til the end.

His system is going into shock. Plasma burns deep and ragged blades meant for pain line every Banished weapon. He shivers under green hands turned black and slick with blood. He coughs and cries and grits his teeth. The helmet's scrubbers cannot stop the stench of cooked flesh.

Esparza apologizes. Joy's voice dies before she opens her mouth.

Silicon and glass and a spark is all she is. All she is in this moment is lost. The emotions are too much, but she can carve them out and lock them down and scream somewhere silent while her avatar smiles through its teeth and coos and calls her humans into order.

It's okay. The Chief's here. It's okay to rest. We've got you. Thank you, Fernando.

He lets go.
