The halo show's story might have been near unsalvageable, but GOOD LORD I hope we see the cast chosen for more halo roles.

Kate Kennedy as Kai was phenomenal. She was weird, she was badass. I love her

Halsey's too. Natasha played her really well. You could tell the acting skill was there, just had horrific writing to work with.

Hell pretty much all silver team.

Miranda you too queen. That was a solid rendition of a character.

Another short story for the @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt: Hidden Chemistry

Fandom: Halo TV Series (Silver Timeline)

Kai and Miranda isn't generally my vibe, but the prompt made me think of them.

My science is very vague. I need more than 24h for that, apparently. Also, it's the 26th century, so... *makes future science magic gesture* If Iron Man can make an element, then this makes sense, too.

Kai wasn’t a perceptive person.

No. That wasn’t right. She was incredibly perceptive when it came to things in her purview. Reading body language, for instance. She could read if a person was hostile from the set of their shoulders and the lift of their chest better than by expression. Could read if that person planned to attack from their stance and how they distributed their weight. Could read the bunching of muscles to know an attack was coming, and if they were launching it right, left, or forward.

Right now, she could tell Miranda was incredibly irritated by the assistant in her space. Her back was tense, but there was a curve to her shoulders Kai wasn’t accustomed to seeing in soldiers, but had come to understand was a sign of restraint. Like the body trying to cage in its rage.

Kai continued pacing the perimeter of the laboratory, looking at displays of xeno-archeological finds behind protective shields. She recognized many of the items. Covenant weapons. Some preserved pieces of Covenant soldiers. Bits of technology the Covenant were obsessed with gathering.

“This is from Mamore,” Kai said, pointing at a gleaming bit of metal with a golden glow.

Miranda looked up and tapped her tablet a few times, then blinked twice in surprise. She still was startled every time Kai was right about something that didn’t involve exploding an alien. Kai indulged in enjoying the reaction.

“It is,” Miranda said. Her posture softening as she turned fully to Kai.

“I remember retrieving it,” Kai said. “The Covenant had us pinned down. We lost Nora-098 on that mission.”

Miranda did one of those things with her expression that Kai didn’t know how to read. It wasn’t anger or aggression. Since removing the hormonal suppression pellet, Kai was noticing there was a whole range of expressions she previously disregarded as unimportant.

“I’m sorry.”

“Acceptable losses,” Kai replied as she held a hand up to the protective shield. “I had my pellet in at the time. I didn’t feel anything.”

“And now?”

There was a hollow sensation when she thought about it. “I don’t know,” Kai said and found herself looking away from Miranda and at the assistant. “Hey. You’re doing that wrong.”

The young man jerked his head up from his hunch, attempting to make himself as small as possible, and nearly knocked everything off his table. “Wha-What?”

“You’re doing it wrong,” Kai repeated. “The sequence. If you add that before the base, it’s going to explode.”

Miranda pinched the bridge of her nose and exhaled. “Luke, why don’t you go get some coffee,” she said, jaw tight as she held back what she really wanted to say. Admiral Parangosky did the same when she was moderating her responses to Dr. Halsey.

“Uh, yes, Dr. Keyes,” he said, and left the room hastily without completely turning his back. Prey behavior.

“How’d you know?” Miranda asked, walking over to his table and scanning the contents. She moved a couple vials further apart.

“I know chemistry,” Kai answered with a snort. “I’m not as ignorant as you think.”

“As I used to think.”

The corner of Kai’s mouth quirked. She didn’t hide it. “Those two chemicals make a simple flare explosion in the field, and they can be manufactured easily on most planets acclimated to humans. Easy to figure the base needed to be added to stabilize.”

“Easy,” Miranda said to herself. “With the base, it’s a compound that melts away Grunt guts while leaving metal unharmed.”

“That’s why the smell is familiar. The techs must use it on our armor.”

“Thanks for keeping my lab in one piece,” Miranda said. “I thought it would be a safe enough task for him.”

“He’d have been fine,” Kai said. The singeing wouldn’t have been too bad at those quantities. “Well, until you jumped him.”

“What?”

Miranda looked at her with wide eyes. Surprise. Offence? Her mouth slightly open as she worked her jaw, as if the words were stuck in her throat and she was trying to dislodge them.

Kai frowned and cocked her head to the side. “Your body language. You were aggravated with him, weren’t you?”

“Oh. That kind of jumping.” Miranda blew out a breath, relaxing. “We need to work on your vernacular.”

“What other kind of jumping is there?”

Miranda opened her mouth and shut it as she began shuffling pages into a notebook on the table. This time she was holding something in, but not anger. Kai wasn’t quite sure what the emotion was, but Miranda looked down and tucked her chin as if Kai’s attention were a physical thing. But not necessarily an unwelcome one.

“Let’s... work up to that.”

Jorge and Kurt FULLY commit to the “Miranda Is Our Little Sister” bit. I need to find a reason for one of them to full armor piggyback her across Camp Currahee. “Hop on, little sis. Shoulda done this years ago.”

Halo Characters and what they would play in MarioKart 8 Deluxe: Post 1 - Original Trilogy Characters

I feel like Johnson would pick Mario because it's the classic character and he seems like the person to pick a classic because it reminds him of the good old days. He could also pick Waluigi, Bowser, or one of the Kongs (Funky has my vote as Johnson's Kong)

Lord Hood would probably pick Luigi or a Kong because he's buddying up with Johnson. Hood is also saying that the older Mariokarts were the best Mariokarts (but he's playing this one because it's here and everyone else is playing it and he's not about to sit out on the shenanigans). Hood might also pick King Boo. Idk

Miranda Keyes. I don't know. She might pick Peach, or Daisy maybe. I'm really, not sure. I haven't given her much consideration on this topic.

Chief could go a number of directions. He could pick Mario, because he also likes the classics and thinks they deserve respect, he could pick Peach because she's the princess and reminds him of his princess (cortana), he could also pick classic Link because Link is also a loyal soldier with strong morals. (And they both wear green) However, Chief is honestly very likely to go a strictly tactical advantage route and pick his character and vehicle according to what would be the best strategic move. Unless that is too likely to give him an automatic win over his friends and he doesn't want to make it unfair, in which case all of the characters mentioned above still apply.

Cortana, I genuinely think she would pick classic link because he reminds her of chief. Either that or Peach or light blue yoshi maybe. She could also go a strategic route because of the computer brain but I don't think she would because she is honestly more capable of stepping back from that way of thinking than Chief is and can realize that this is purely for fun and she actually has a lot of emotions for an AI so would be able to pick the character she is most fond of.

Thel is either picking a Yoshi or BOTW link. Again, because Link is a respectable and honorable soldier. (And they both wear blue/silver)

I am nearly 100% positive Rtas is picking white Yoshi. They just feel like they would go together. He could also pick Link. Same reasons Thel would.

Tartarus is either picking a Kong (excluding Diddy) because they are big and strong and he feels powerful in doing so, or he's picking metal Mario because that one looks cool and would be really heavy, again, he would feel powerful in doing so. He is also likely to pick a Bowser. Also, Tartarus has severe anger issues and will probably smash a controller and go into a rage where Chief and Rtas, who have had enough of this guy and are ready for some violence towards him, try to knock him out and Johnson and Thel just tranquilize him and get it over with because they have had experience with this situation and are also tired of it but don't feel like fighting him. Two of these four (idk if it's Chief/Thel, Chief/Rtas, or Rtas/Thel) then drag Tartarus to his room and maybe even lock him in there.
