Let Us Help You (An Eddie, Volt, & Endometriosis-having Reader fic)

So, I got into Date Everything recently and even played it on my Twitch. After watching someone play through Eddie & Volt's route, I felt like making a fic with the Skelly Special. The Skelly Special? Making fictional characters witness endometriosis.

Also, if you suspect you have endometriosis/know someone who might, please consult a medical professional, ideally one who specializes in endometriosis. They can help you better than some Vtuber on the internet writing fanfiction.

Spoilers for Eddie and Volt's route!!

Warnings: Menstruation talk, description of genitalia (specifically the vulva and vagina), a good amount of blood, accidental autism coding because I don't know how to write non-autists, medical misogyny (even if the reader is gender neutral they have a uterus so this applies by technicality), and for a lack of better words; having two people assist in changing menstrual products. I promise that it won't be horny, just weirdly suggestive because I think it's in character for Volt.

It’s that time again. The time where you need to change out menstrual products twice as often as the average person due to your profuse amount of bleeding, take a strong enough painkiller so you can pretend your uterus is not trying to kill you, and go slightly insane over a weird craving that happens sometimes. That, and pray that you don’t have to call an ambulance so you can get an emergency blood transfusion. Again.

After putting in the first of possibly four menstrual cups you’ll have to put in for the day, you carefully stepped down the stairs to go to the kitchen, holding onto the railing for dear life. You needed something to consume before taking your painkillers, not doing so is a hot ticket to puke town. However, the thing you were craving enough to drive you crazy was just whipped cream. Whipped cream in a bowl. Just gonna hope that you actually have whipped cream.

Using your dateviators, you beamed the fridge to summon Freddy. When he looked down at you, he seemed to already know what was going on. “Need something quick to eat, cool kid?”

“Any whipped cream?” you groaned, arm wrapped around your stomach.

Freddy reached into his coat, procuring a can of it, “Yes I do! But I think you should at LEAST have something else too. Something with… density?”

Taking the can, you placed it down before grabbing a bowl, “I got some crackers to go with them. Combination of salty and sweet.” You grabbed a box of crackers from the cabinet, placing them on the counter as you shook the can of whipped cream.

“Well, if you say so.” Freddy walked off, procuring something from his coat to place on the table. It was a glass of water, of course. You walked to the table to set down the bowl, grabbing a spoon on your way. Once you ate all the whipped cream, you some of the crackers into the bowl, eating those too.

Once you ate, you grabbed a long orange pill bottle full of very large pills. Those were your painkillers, meant to last around eight or so hours. Ibuprofen could only go so far, after that one incident when Sam had to call an ambulance for you during a night out is burned into your head. Gulping down the rest of the water after putting the pill in your mouth, you took some time to prepare for the rest of the day.

You talked to more of the dateables; Telly, bearing Jean Loo rapping as you changed your menstrual cup in the afternoon, even going to inform Washford that him and Drysdale might need to clean bloody clothes again. Just anything, anything, to keep your mind occupied. In due time, night fell, and you were on your last charge.

Eventually, you went to the Breaker Box. You recently helped Eddie and Volt with their faulty wire, about a few days ago. Even though both of them say that they’re fine, you still wanted to check on the two regardless. But the roles might be reversed this time, given the look Volt gave you the moment you entered the bar.

“Live wire, are you feeling well?” Volt walked up to you, observing with his light eyes, “Your skin is looking rather pale, and a moment from passing out.”

You shook your hands in front of yourself, “I’m fine! This is normal for me on my period, at least it’s not to the point of calling my friend to take me to the hospital or anything for a blood transfusion!”

A hand snaked itself around your waist, and the voice of Eddie rang in your ears, “You’re worse than me at this, for amps sake. If we have to, we will drag you to your room and make you rest.”

Unfortunately, you doubled down to the two, “I promised to help the two of y’all with the wiring every night! I can’t skip a day becaus- MMF!” a shot of pain straight from your uterus led you to fold into yourself, and falling forward. Volt caught you in his arms, his supple pectorals cushioning your face.

Volt clicked his tongue, “And you almost fell to the floor. Eddie, should we keep them here?”

Eddie grunted, wrapping his arms across your back and under your knees, hoisting you up, “Based on what just happened, it’s best that we keep Y/N here.”

Placing a hand on Eddie’s chest, you tried to wriggle out of his arms, “Seriously, I’m gonna be fine. I’ve had this condition for what, over a decade now? I know how to take care of myself.” That, and you needed to change your menstrual cup and didn’t want the embarassment of them seeing the bloodbath. “Can I at least use the bathroom first? Alone?”

Volt puffed out his cheeks, squinting at you. Eddie just shook his head, in that not mad but disappointed energy that you’d expect from your own parents. “Fine. But if we hear you falling, I’m opening the door immediately. I’m still carrying you there, though.”

So you ended up just letting Eddie carry you to the bathroom. When he set you down, you ended up realizing how wobbly you were, god damn anemia ruining your day.

“Fucking hell,” you hissed, “why does my anemia have to start setting in right now?”

Eddie placed his hands on your shoulders, “Are you sure that you can be by your own?”

A blush creeped itself up your cheeks. Does Eddie realize what he’s going to see? You might be in a relationship with him and Volt, but you think it’s way too early to have either of them see your vulva in its bloodiest state. Do they even know what menstrual products are? Would they be disgusted?

“Are you worried, live wire? Rest assured, we will take good care of you,” Volt appeared, kneeling in front of you, “Eddie and I may not know what exactly is happening with your body,” he took your left hand in his, planting a kiss on your palm, “but you helped us, saved us. Wouldn’t it be cruel if we don’t help you back?”

Sighing in defeat, you relented, “Alright, I’ll let you two help. Just… at least wear some disposable gloves. It’s going to be… extremely bloody.”

Letting the two assist you to the toilet seat, you grabbed a drawstring bag from your pocket. Undoing the string, you took out a black menstrual cup and placed it on top of the bag. Eddie raised an eyebrow, “What’s that for? It looks like a silicone funnel.”

“A menstrual cup,” you explained, “it’s not a funnel, or else it wouldn’t be useful for my purposes. The stem is for ease of taking it out, and the cup is to contain the blood. It’s meant to last twelve hours before needing to remove it.”

Eddie nodded, turning to Volt. “I’ll go grab some gloves. Once I get back, you can tell us what we need to do.”

It didn’t take long for Eddie to leave and come back with two pairs of black nitrile gloves. He gave one pair to Volt, and they both put the gloves on.

“Ready, livewire?” Volt asked, cocking his head.

You nodded, “I’ll have to lift up the seat and pull my pants down, but yeah.” Cautiously, you gripped the counter as you lifted the lid of the toilet, pulling down your sweatpants as you sat back down.

“So, we just need to take out one thing and replace it with another? Sounds simple enough.” Eddie knelt down in front of you, Volt moving to your left side. “Where do I need to go?”

Pausing, you covered your face with your hands to hopefully hide your blush, “It’s… you have to stick your fingers inside me in order to get it. The one I’m wearing has a ring on the stem that you can grab.”

Another hand placed itself on your thigh, pulling it toward the location of Volt, “Don’t worry, live wire. I can keep you… distracted as Eddie works his magic.”

Making a gap with your fingers to see Eddie, you nodded; a silent confirmation to proceed. He nods back, using his right arm to hold your leg and his left to… ‘assist.’ Going down from the hair on your pelvic mound, he lightly pushed on your vulva with a finger, “In here?”

“Yeah.”

“Well then,” Eddie placed his right hand on your stomach, tilting your pelvis for easier access, “say something if you get any pain.” He then positioned his finger in between the lips of the vulva, pushing it inside. Since you expected it, you didn’t jerk or make a peep. When he felt the cup, he hooked his finger around the ring. “I think I got it. Ready?” Eddie waited for you to nod again, and he slowly pulled out the cup.

Once it was out, Eddie investigated the contents. Volt leaned in to investigate as well, “Oh dear,” he winced, “that looks to be what? Two ounces of blood?”

“My flow tends to be quite heavy. There’s probably a chunk or two of uterine lining too. Just pour the contents into the toilet bowl and clean it with water, I’ll sanitize it later.” you explained, grabbing the other menstrual cup. Both cups were rather large, but the black one had a stem and the pink with the ring.

Eddie got up from his kneeling position once he dumped the contents, going to the sink to wash off the excess blood. You could feel some of your menstrual blood coming fresh from the pussy falling into the toilet bowl, but at this point you lost any fucks to give.

Grabbing the black cup, Eddie went back to his earlier position, investigating the thick silicone. “How do you put this in? I don’t think it involves shoving it inside you.” he asked.

“Oh yeah, you fold it, give it here and I’ll show how,” Eddie gave the cup to you, and you pinched the sides together, making a taco-like shape with the fold, “You have to make sure it’s unfolded when inside, usually you gotta feel around for any folds and unfold them.”

You handed the folded up cup back to Eddie, who nodded. More confident now, he pried open your vulva with one hand, pushing your menstrual cup in with another. Volt rubbed circles into your thigh, slight tingles appearing where his fingers went. After a bit of prodding from Eddie’s end, he grabbed some of the toilet paper, wiping off the blood that seeped out of the vaginal canal, along with the blood that went past the cup.

“Alright, it’s over now.” Eddie took off his gloves once putting the toilet paper in the toilet, putting them in a trash bin nearby. Volt helped to hoist you up, and to help put your underwear and pants back on you before also throwing away his gloves.

“Well, Eddie,” Volt looked over to Eddie, “let’s situate our little live wire at their own table. I doubt that they can do much in regards to maintenance right now.”

You rolled your eyes, “You remind me of the bartender I used to work with back in college right now, Volt.”

Eddie cocked his head, hands on his hips, “You worked at a bar, Y/N?”

“I’ll explain once we’re not in a bathroom.” Grabbing the used menstrual cup and placing it in the drawstring bag, you let Volt carry you to one of the VIP tables. When he set you down, he and Eddie grabbed seats as well.

“So, you worked at a bar during college?” Volt asked.

You nodded, “College town. I started off as a barback. The bartender taught me a lot about making cocktails; what alcohols go together, what flavors should never be combined, and how to crush up ice real good. His wife also has my condition, so he knew what I was going through. I remember that he forced me to take time off during the first few days of my period.”

“And what is your condition called?”

“Endometriosis. Basically, my uterine lining appears outside the uterus and on other organs. It fucks with fertility, so chances of me carrying a fetus to term would be pretty low. Despite there being a chance, I’d like to not bring someone into the world that will suffer like I do.” you explained.

The way Volt looked at you, it felt like you broke his heart. “How…” Volt paused, contemplating before continuing his question, “How far does it go? The lining?”

You pointed to your head, “Oh, it can go up to the brain. And fuse organs together. I tried to get a hysterectomy some time back, but my gynecologist said that they wouldn’t go with it unless I’m like, married and have kids.”

“Oh, our poor little spark,” Volt lamented, “I can’t believe that someone would force you to suffer for so long. Who are they?”

“Volt,” Eddie warned, “I don’t think it’s a good idea to electrocute someone.”

You nodded, “Yeah, I agree. I no longer go to that gynecologist anymore… or any, for that matter. That experience turned me away from going to one ever since. Probably a bad idea, but I’m not gonna bother with trying to find a new practice until my current job situation is resolved.”

“Anyway,” you grabbed your phone, “I’m gonna go sit here until the club’s closed. Don’t worry about me, I’ll keep myself planted here.”

The two nodded, and left you at the table to open the club.

Eventually, the club closed, and everyone left. Except for you, since you were passed out. Head resting on the table, eyes shut, and dateviators awkwardly skewed.

Eddie looked over at your sleeping figure, chuckling to himself. He gently lifted your head from the table, lifting you into his arms. You didn’t even stir from your slumber.

“Exhausted, huh? Guess we can do the daily maintenance together some other time.” Eddie muttered to himself, looking over at Volt.

“Is our live wire asleep?” Volt whispered to Eddie.

“Yeah,” Eddie whispered back, “I’m gonna take them to their bedroom.”

It took no words for Volt to follow Eddie out the Breaker Box and into your room, helping his counterpart situate you on the bed. Volt made sure to take the bag with the menstrual cup out of your pocket, placing it on the nightstand.

Eddie knelt over your sleeping form, kissing your forehead before removing the dateviators off you, placing them next to the bag on the nightstand. The two then left your room, letting you slumber away.

so. as a vamp ive chomped on a variety of diff energies in a variety of ways

my methods are, fr the most part filter feeding on ambient energy around me - not necessarily from humans bc i only interact w my mom really and i dont ever feed on my pets. ig it tends to be like. moreso ethereal energies. which i will get into in a minute. i do also directly feed frm ppl who consent to it, but seeing as i dont talk to ppl that often i dont tend to go that route as of recently. i also source from specific types of energy via like. astral plane. usually wells of energy spawned naturally, and ive also on occasion picked thru n cleaned some folks energetic bodies on the astral

theres also a few like. subconscious rules i go for regarding feeding? for one, they have to be energetically compatible w me im not gonna eat some random persons energy if i feel like it would throw my own energetic system off balance. i also am like ... very put off when ppl come to me first to ask to be a donor. if im hungry ill go looking or ill offer a symbiotic thing so we both benefit

on the mechanics of it btw. it very much feels to me like i consume energy, using it to boost my own production and shedding the excess i dont have a use for back into the environment - the excess i shed tends to be a lot more like... purified? distilled?. it takes a while to process it too, just like. yknow. metabolism. like i last had a large-ish feeding session a couple months ago now i think?????? and im still processing it. i also dont tend to overeat bc it just makes me jittery and Too full of energy n i need to burn it off or ground it so i dont metaphorically explode into confetti

im def the type of vampire where its like ... it feels like my energetic system has a leak? so to cover for that i need to draw in more. that also means that divination and spellwork can take a SHIT TON OF ENERGY out of me and take me out for the day if i dont feed before AND after. 0/10 dont recommend the experience, its awful

ANYWAYS. TYPES OF ENERGY IVE EATEN.

for the most part, i prefer life energy if feeding off of another living being. humans and plants fall into that category. i also put physical food in this category bc i do take what little energy it has. i also eat celestial energies - umbra, stellar, and spatial void in particular.

ive also tried emotional and sexual energy, but honestly they dont do anything for me. its like eating air

life energy ... the closest equivalent i can say as to how it tastes is like. whipped cream mixed with cotton candy. the texture is like fluffy air, very incorporeal and like ur eating almost nothing, though it coalesces into a small firmer piece if u press it together close enough. very sweet in a light way - not overwhelming or rich. also kinda similar to very fluffy cake where it feels like ur eating a cloud. more filling than what youd think though! i tend to associate like... whispers of flavor with it.

my main experience eating life energy (not counting filter feeding) is eating souls astrally, in which case thats a bit different. souls are more tangible and in my experience can have a "hardened shell" around them kinda? it doesnt have to be actually hard, it can just be like a thick cloud or gummy or crunchy layer

theres a specific candy in the astral that gives you the experience of like. biting a star that gives a similar mouthfeel, though the star candy is ALWAYS crunchy and also isnt as big of an energy boost than i like so i always end up popping like seven of those bad boys when i wanna get something done magically. it prob would give me more energy if it was an energetic type that was more compatible w me

also! umbra energy! shadow, dark, etc. the texture is a lot more like. comfy cotton quilt. always soft, feels very comforting. like a warm bear hug :) it isnt warm at all though, its like. a chilling type of comfort? hard to describe. sticks around a lot longer than other types of energy for me, and im slower to process it. leaves me topped off longer apparently! if i eat too much, i dont feel "full" but i do need to immediately burn off the excess energy or ground it or else i feel like im vibrating out of my skin

interesting fact here! life energy tends to get processed via settling near my own soul - not in the direct vicinity, but near enough that it isnt a pain to leech energy into my soul. umbra energy tends to get processed with more distance - i notice it curling outside my body pressing against the outside of my energetic body, with my body only slowly leeching it in when its done processing the little bit i was actively working on. its a much slower process! its also a lot more sticky to me ?????????????? well. not STICKY. but like. once ive begun processing it i cant rid myself of it, its just There forever now until i finish processing it askdjfhskfu which isnt bad for me personally!! ive always been a lot more at home and comfortable with umbra energy. it sticking to the outside of my energetic body is actually really useful magically and also for comfort. it rlly Does feel like a comforting hug, plus umbra energy is very good for masking my presence bc i blend into the shadows more. easier to gloss over me.

5. hot chocolate i suppose i dont like it too often but it's nice friendly it's sweet its good esp w lots of whipped cream i love whipped cream on anything sweet but i usually dont have my hot chocolate w whipped cream but when i do oh baby i also enjoy it w peppermint when i can which also isnt often but it's good i also enjoy mint very much it doesnt perfect everything like whipped cream does but it's very good i have (pepper)mint extract that i like to add to so many things like brownies or cookies or something when i can just for a little zest but it's very nice w hot chocolate even when i add too much it also pairs w suman really well which is a little filipino of me to say but if you ever get suman you should eat it w hot chocolate

4. rasberry lemonade <3 this is my go to if im out eating somewhere and i feel a little more daring than just a water

um sorry i think from here on these are just gonna be bubble tea flavors bc idk what else i drink ever

3. coconut or matcha milk tea or both you can do both together but ive never personally had that but they both have nice textures in mind for me matcha is very crunchy to drink and ik old people who my mom is friends w who hate how gritty it is but let me tell you the grit is part of the experience and it's very good you can put matcha in so many things and its nice it's good i enjoy matcha lattes too but milk teas are kind of my favorite thing rn well for a while now but also coconut bc sometimes im not feeling matcha but coconut is always good i had this nice coconut water drink a few weeks ago and it's very refreshing and nice ahh coconut so good it had nata de coco in it did you know that originates in the philippines anyway it was nice ivebeen watching vids on how to make coconut milk too btw but that's unrelated anyway these are like safe easy flavors for milk teas they're good they're always nice i think everyone can enjoy either coconut or matcha but if you dont that's okay too ig but they are probably if im in a rush and dont want coffee flavors and dont wanna get experimental bc one time i did that and got a flavor i didnt like very much i should have gone for one of these tbh

2. hong kong coffee milk tea, whenever i get bobba i usually get a coffee flavor bc there is something wrong w me also this might tie for 1st bc it really depends on my mood sometimes i dont need super sweet drinks but sometimes i do but i always enjoy coffee teas they make my body feel fucked up for the next 24hours but it's worth it tbh this one is very good i cant tell you really what goes into hong kong style coffee off the top of my head but it's very good it's very very good i enjoy it

1. hokkaido coffee milk tea, now ive had lots of hokkaido [flavored] drinks ive had hokkaido oolong milk tea before too but it was not as good i dont think i mean dont get me wrong it was good but this one is better imho but im kind of a fiend for coffee so this one wins hokkaido milk tea is just very sweet and caramel-y it's so sweet but it's also coffee so this is something that also excites lucy but bitter coffee milk teas are not as fun for me i just love caffeine w sugar even though it fucks up my sleep schedule whenever i have it but this milk tea is just a very nice balance of sweet to it it makes me (: sometimes it is too sweet for some people but sugary things make me (: to think about they just feel sweet also i think it pairs well w the tapioca pears so yeah it's nice it's very good

Aidma: Fidgets a lot. Usually she’ll fidget with her hands and kind of shift in place. It seems to get on other people’s nerves though.... 

Najlynn: Her feet tap a lot on the floor and she’ll fidget her tongue in her mouth. Her eyes can’t seem to stay focused either. 

C is for Crush: what is it like when they have a crush? How do they know/act?

Aidma: She’ll be blushing more around them. When she gets even just a simple complement she’ll go shy mode. But she can still interact with them casually of course. She’d most likely find out about the crush when she’s taking one of her nature walks. Shy complement giver but she wants to show that she notices the little things about her crush. 

Najlynn: Smiley smiley :). She’ll be your little comedian. She makes people fall for her through her jokes for the most part. She’d give you complements confidently a good amount too~

D is for Date: describe an ideal date for them

Both: They don’t really have date ideals just as long as both sides enjoy the time spent together that’s enough for them ❤ 

E is for Essential: what is one thing they could NEVER go without

Aidma: Well,,, support. trauma still haunts her to this day and she appreciates every bit of support she gets. I don’t think she’d still be here if she hadn’t had support.... 

Najlynn: Her close friends that understand her thick and through. They are her shields from the hate she gets for just being her (because she’s  pan-sexual and poly-amorous).

F is for Favorite: a favorite anything- food, place, smell, book, etc.

Aidma: Spicy chips are one of her favorite snacks. Any lake/pond is a favorite place of her’s. wood, flowing water and however Zeus smells are her favorite scents. :> Her favorite books are academia books. 

Najlynn: Macaroons with whipped cream and coffee is her favorite snack. Cafes, parks and board walks are her favorite places. Flowers, books, freshly gritted coffee beans and grass are her favorite scents. Her favorite books are also academia books (but she leans towards light and romantic academia books). 

G is for Giggle: how they laugh/what makes them laugh

Aidma: Usually it starts out soft and she’ll be covering her mouth but it goes further it’d get a a bit louder and she’ll be clutching her stomach. Sometimes she just bursts out in loud laughter but tbh its rare. 

Najlynn: She always purses her lips before laughing. always. And she never holds back, she can sometimes be the loudest laugher which can sometimes cause people to look at her weirdly but she never notices it.

Both: They both snort a bit in their laughs and i find that really cute uwu

H is for Holding Hands: Do they like holding hands? Are their hands warm or cold? Pinky promises?

Aidma: Y E S PLZ. her hands are warm uwu. also a big yes for pinky promises. Pinky promises are extremely important to her and if you break it then you break a lil piece of her :( 

Najlynn: handholding is such a cute thing to do in her eyes so yes. her hands are actually cold! Pinky promises she sees as cute childish things to do. she usually doesn’t take them seriously but if the other person takes them seriously then she will too. 

I is for Inside Joke: something they do that everyone thinks is funny but they don’t understand

Aidma: When she’s mad at Zeus she’ll call him pin-chan or pinny just because he hates it. He said “those are to much of childish names” for him lol. He especially hates it when its in front of people. 

Najlynn: She likes adding the word girl in the most serious of sentences. ex “I am sorry for the death of your father girl”. Some kind of dark humor that is..... 

J is for Jinx: Are they Superstitious?

Both: No, they usually make fun of superstitious people together. 

K is for Kiss: how do they kiss?

Aidma: usually soft, and full of emotions. They leave you with a nice fluttery feeling. But when she’s horni she’ll be very passionate and you’ll be left to have to catch your breath. 

Najlynn: itty bitty kisses and even though they were little, because there were so much you have to catch your breath. 

L is for Love Languge: what is their love language? How do they give and how would they like to receive love?

Aidma: whether subtle or not, she gives constant reminders that she loves them. gifts, hand holding, cuddles, hugs and ect are her ways of expressing love. But she prefers to be shown love physically. You don’t even have to say the words to her, but affectionate touches are her favorite way of getting love.She also likes looking into the eyes of her lover lovingly and seeing the same look on their face looking at her (even tho she’s really shy about this).

Najlynn: She likes whispering sweet nothings to her lover and seeing their reaction. That’s her favorite way of showing love. She also likes getting shown physical affection.

M is for Meant to be: how/when they know someone is “the one”

Aidma: That when she spends time with them, it seems to go by so fast. That’s honestly what she really wants with someone. 

Najlynn: That they’re okay with how she wants the relationship to be and it actually ends up working out. it never seems to work out with any body like this and she just wants someone who is cool with being in a polyamorous relationship. 

N is for Nickname: a nickname they would have or their favorite thing to be called

Aidma: her nicknames are: Adi, Didi/Di, Dia and, Mani

Najlynn: her nicknames are: Naji, Naj, Nana, JeJe (its pronounced zhe zhe) DISCLAIMER: NEVER CALL NAJLYNN, LYNN. just don’t. She hates it and will end up breaking your arm if you do. 

O is for Organization: are they clean or messy?

Aidma: clean for the most part, sometimes she is a little messy but later she’d end up cleaning it up. But she can get really messy on stressful days.

Aidma: Strangers and non close friends who don’t get personal space. and constant small noises(like the ticking of a clock).

Najlynn: Being asked personal questions from non close people. like yeah she’s an open person but not that open.

Aidma: Nature walks, eat sugary foods, cuddle with her lover or get her emotions out by drawing

Najlynn: Scents really have a calming affect on her so she’d try to go somewhere that has one of her favorite scents. cuddling with someone also calms her pretty well.

Aidma: smile, laughter, basically her whole body. :3

Najlynn: her voice is loud but somehow soft?? idk how to explain it. her lips look so soft when she smiles i wouldn’t be mad if u wanted to kiss her right there when she smiles. 

T is for Telephone: are they a talker or a texter? How often do they use their phone? (modern au ofc)

Aidma: she switches btw liking to talk over the phone/facetime/txting. Usually, she doesn’t use her phone much, like around 1h some days or 5h other days. depends 

Najlynn: She likes txting better. sometimes she likes to facetime but its rare tbh. she uses her phone a lot, like around 7h. 

U is for Unique: a random quirk they have

Aidma: not really a quirk but she mocks ppl’s voices a lot. 

Najlynn: She can tell someone’s relationship with their family by first glance. lol idk how i thought of that.

V is for Valentine: Are they the type to celebrate or not?

Aidma: Even when she didn’t have Zeus by her side she loved valentines day. Although she did get a bit jealous of the happy couples she was happy for them.

Najlynn: Surprisingly, no. She doesn’t have any ill feelings towards it, she just doesn’t care for it.

W is for Wholesome: something extremely pure about them that makes you just *uwu*

Aidma: I know I already said this but she loves physical affection and imagining some Fluffy Adius scenarios really warms my heart 🥰

Najlynn: She’s just soo understanding!! I adore her for her supportive side. 

X is for Xenia: How they would entertain a guest/show hospitality

Both: Cook some bomb food and sweets, (modern au prt) and offer to turn on the tv. lol but they’d probably talk over the tv.

Y is for Youth: A fond childhood memory they have

Aidma: uh............................................... okay well.......... when she first met her older sister (Amalie) They were in hiding but here’s the thing, they had Iasona who was still a baby at the time with them cuz Iaso’s mother had been killed right after she had birthed Iaso and then Iaso had been thrown out left to die. But Amalie found her and took care of her. After a a year and a few months when Amalie found Adi they decided to go into hiding and Adi thinks that time in hiding, taking care of Iasona was “a calm in the cruel storm”.   

Najlynn: meeting her little siblings for the first time. She immediately adored them all.

Z is for Zzz: Sleep habits. Do they cuddle in their sleep? Talk? What do they dream about?

Aidma: She’s the biggest sleep cuddler. She doesn’t talk in her sleep (she’s quite happy for it). Nightmares unfortunately happen at least every week for her but her dreams are usually either totally chaos or, its of what she wanted her childhood to be. 

Najlynn: Sometimes she’ll cuddle but it’s not often. Yeah she does talk in her sleep (when she and Adi have to camp out on a mission her sleep talking annoys Adi to no end(cuz she’s do damn loudd))  Sometimes she has visions in her sleep but she never remembers them. When she does have nightmares, they’re creepy asf. Her dreams usually have clouds in them for some reason idk y.

Victor Grantz Observations

I’ve been playing Victor Grantz the Postman for 4 days now, and I’ve decided to compile some observations and headcanons into a convenient post for my own benefit. If anyone else finds this interesting, that’s cool, but this will be mainly for my own personal use. Check the Read More for my humongous paragraphs filled with Victor Grantz observations and headcanons. They’ll probably show up in my fics at some point, whenever I get around to writing again. Until then, enjoy all of this nonsense.

1. Firstly, Victor is a lot quieter than the other survivors. Yes, he pants and moans and makes ghastly noises from time to time, but on the whole, he keeps his mouth shut. Quite literally. The voice recorded for him, in addition to being extremely soft and light, has mainly an array of muffled throat noises to pair with the fact that his mouth is sewn shut. Even when he gets sent off on the rocket chair, he doesn’t scream but lets out a muffled cry. It’s very cute and I do enjoy it.

2. Victor is a genuinely good boy. Despite how he seems to not enjoy people in face-to-face settings, he has a deep rooted belief in the morality and goodness of people, finding that humanity’s moral goodness is merely hidden beneath the veneer each person shows to the world. This is in contrast to how Aesop views people, where he would rather interact with a dead thing rather than a living person. In that way, Victor has a charm that reminds me of Kurenai Wataru from Kamen Rider Kiva. I mentioned this on Twitter, and I still hold to it now that I’ve had so much time with the character. Wataru was also one to think that humanity was depraved and unclean, yet he believed in the hidden goodness of mankind and fought for them as Kiva. That is also Victor’s charm, only with handwritten letters instead of vampire armor and a demonic horse motorcycle.

3. Victor’s empathy shines through via his in-game actions. One of his traits is that he is empathetic, and I feel it whenever I play as him. I’m sure it’s because I’m a weirdo, but whenever I send off a letter, I hope it arrives safely. When Wick barks to indicate the letter has been delivered, relief washes over me and I feel so much joy that it was received safely. I’ll often get thanked for the letters, which isn’t necessary but greatly appreciated. It makes me feel like I’m doing a good job, even when I’m not utilizing the benefits of the buff. And Wick the Post Dog is very cute and hardworking. I always feel bad when he can’t deliver a letter or I send him off and it’s too late.

4. Speaking of Wick, here are some observations about him. He’s a weird mix of the seer’s owl and the wildling’s boar. When you use owl sight, the observed character can’t see the owl until it’s needed, which is how Wick is sometimes. Wick isn’t seen unless he’s needed, making him invisible until you’ve decided on the letter you wish to send. Once you give Wick a letter, he will appear visibly on the field like the boar and you can crash into him if you’re not looking. I think hunters can hit Wick, too, but I’ve never seen it since I give Wick letters and don’t see him until I send another letter. The only other times I see him are if we happen to be running in the same direction or if I accidentally crash into him while we’re going opposite directions. He’s very small and hard to see if you’re wearing The Embrace, since it makes him black. I’ve been using Victor’s base skin since Friday after crashing into Wick several times during one match. He’s a lot easier to see when he’s a bright yellow dog. Darned good doggo, 13/10, would pet infinitely.

5. From here on out, it’s headcanons. While playing Victor for… 4 hours… yesterday, I started to wonder what exactly was inside the envelopes he sends out. I then envisioned him writing each letter by hand before his matches, making sure he has a surplus to send to people. Sometimes he gets so excited about how well he’s written a letter that he wishes to read it again, which is why he opens letters surreptitiously during matches, as though to remind himself of what good writing skills he has.

Anyway, after thinking about that, I decided to try my hand at writing such letters given the letter types he has available as prompts:

I am writing you this to inform you that I am leaving. The time we spent together was beautiful, but it had to end. To part ways is a normal experience, as people ebb and flow from our lives like the tide. Each new phase of the moon brings new people for us to experience and love, just as it takes people away, and I now must away with the tide.

Should we see each other again someday, I hope that you will remember the happiness we felt. There is no malice in this parting, for farewells are hope for a bright future apart. May time be gentle as the waves of change flow over you.

Hope Letter

Do you believe in anything? Do you believe in God? Do you believe in science? Do you believe in the morality of humanity at all? Belief is what drives us to be so resilient and adaptive. We drive ourselves toward betterment because we simply believe that we can be better. What an incredible drive we have!

Tantamount to this drive is a simple belief in hope. A hope is like a wish, but more tangible and real. A hope can be so simple. I hope that you will see me. I hope that you will smile for me. I hope that you will say my name. Such simple desires can keep us motivated for short intervals. On a day that drudges on, one can merely hope that it will be lunchtime soon. On a day when the air is cold and the sky is dark, one can hope that the clouds will part and bring the sun back to smile on us. Hope isn’t as lofty as wishing. I could wish for something unfathomable, such as a giant swimming pool filled of ice cream and chocolate pudding, but wishes rarely come true. With hope, there is a flicker of reality in them and with enough hard work that hope can be obtained.

I hope that you have belief in hope. I am sending you this in the hope that you receive it. I am sending you this in the hope that it will aid you in some way. I know not how, but if it is helpful to you in anyway, that is all I hope for.

I hope to see you again. I hope that we will share a knowing smile between us. I hope that you will say my name and that the word is filled with your gratitude that I helped you, even if my aid was so small.

These are just quick samples that I whipped up, but I’d like to think that he is feverishly writing, knowing that his letters inspire hope in the hearts of those he sends them to. I feel like it’s a lovely sentiment that he endeavors to bring just a modicum of inspiration to his teammates, even if he fails in the match. Especially if he’s sending out the permanent buffs. That’s his last wish, essentially. He wants you to succeed where he has failed because he has faith that you can triumph.

6. Victor is quiet, meek, and a nervous wreck, but he has a heart of gold. Much like Aesop, he’s shy and not the most forthright with his emotions. He hides himself behind a mask of silence, as I enumerated in How Do You Explain Love? I wouldn’t say that he’s afraid of intimacy, but more that he worries that intimacy may shatter his worldview. I doubt that having his world be shattered in such a way would leave Victor in a poor situation. He already has belief in the goodness of humanity, as witnessed by his introductory video, yet he could be left shaken by the thought that not all people wear such reprehensible masks. To know that there are people who wear their honesty plain as the nose on their face would be a shock to him, but I think he would readily accept it. Despite how he hasn’t experienced much kindness in his life, he’s always open to giving kindness to anyone he meets.

7. And I believe that that kindness could be extended even to hunters. Though they pursue him daily for death, he likely understands that it’s merely their job and laments not being able to give them letters as he can for his allies. Perhaps if the hunters got warm, heartfelt letters like the survivors do, then they would not be so cruel and heartless. He knows that many of the hunters were human once, and he would likely want to appeal to the remainder of their humanity by offering them comfort in the form of a beautiful letter. A wonderfully crafted letter can bring even the strongest men to tears, and I’m certain that Victor would feel that the hunters are deserving of that kindness despite how terrifying and terrible they are.

The mysterious and misleading aspects of Tavis make Blackwall wary. Tavis knows Blackwall is lying about/hiding something but he doesn’t really touch on it... and he may poke fun at Blackwall far too often. He may think every opportunity to mess with him is fucking hilarious.XD

// At first their relationship is full of a lot of scowls and smirks. Tavis likes to make really bad jokes just to get a reaction... or flirt just to get a reaction. Cassandra is really too easy to get reactions from for Tavis to resist teasing and being a total dork around. She doesn’t like this of course... she finds him to be skeezy, impulsive and untrustworthy, at first. Over time though... he starts showing his more serious sides and she realizes that Tavis isn’t all jokes and flirtation. He likes her well enough too. He actually comes to like Cassandra a lot the more they interact and god he finds her groans and scowls to be adorable. I think I can go as far to say they have a weird adversarial relationship similar to her and Varric? Eventually it becomes a bit cute and he gets to see what people like her are like... her faith and he grows from it.

//Tavis is one of the few people that really likes when Cole goes off on one of his mind reading things (unless it’s about his blood magic stuff which he promptly informs Cole to be careful with because he doesn’t want to be... y’know... murdered on the spot). He really really likes Cole and moreover Tavis is extremely curious about him. He has never really had the chance to just... chat with a spirit before so he seeks Cole out a lot. Cole tries to heal his hurts and he is like “NO NO NO like... just tell me about bunnies and kittens... it’s fine”. He spends most of his time asking Cole how he can help while picking Cole’s brain. He just wants to know EVERYTHING about this kid.

cullen ★☆☆☆☆ 

//Cullen is an ex-templar who still somewhat adheres to the order... Tavis doesn’t even try to get to know him... he avoids Cullen as much as he can. He likes his personality, he thinks Cullen is nice but he doesn’t risk his safety in getting to know him better. It is too dangerous... considering Tavis is y’know... a secret blood mage and also does super illegal stuff that the Templars would kill him for and destroy all his work if found out. So... nope... he isn’t going to try. Cullen can stay over there with his pretty face and Tavis will politely ignore him and flirt with him when they happen to play wicked grace.

dorian ★★★★☆ ♥

//Potential romance. In our main verse canon they have done it and gotten pretty close to... romance-ish? But... it isn’t really a romance like Dorian would have with the inquisitor. It is odd tbh... I wouldn’t call them fuck buddies they actually become pretty close emotionally and then it trails off. Tavis cares greatly for Dorian and Dorian him but it doesn’t end up going with the route that Dorian probably wants. Tavis can’t be that... Tavis is a blood mage and has a life of his own where he pretty much needs to hand his life over to to it and involve no romance (especially of a potential Tevinter magister). And... once he finds out about Dorians father and Dorians problem with blood magic... Tavis distances himself for Dorian’s sake alone. It is... actually really sad... it makes me sad because they get on so well. But Tavis doesn’t want to hurt him after that and Tavis just... does his whole... ‘they will forget about me’ thing. It makes me so sad GAHHHH He cares about Dorian a lot but it just... doesn’t work out in the successful romance spectrum. It is full of pain. Maybe with a muse it would work but... in our headcanon it is sad and doesn’t work. They go their separate ways and only converse on occasion as good friends. But there is always that... what came from the troubles of life and social constraints thing.

iron bull ★★★☆☆

//I don’t put him down as an LI because idk!!! Tbh... they have this kind of casual relationship. Tavis might eventually get kinky with Bull but it wouldn’t really go anywhere... it would just be fun because... that is how they are as friends. They don’t get that close emotionally. That being said!... They are really good friends! They get along so well! Tavis loves picking Bull’s brain for info about Qunari and getting his perspective because it’s so incredibly different from his own. He just wants to learn all of the things but Bull hits on him all of the time because he is well... because he is Tavis lets be honest... XD The change in perspective actually excites him and he wants to learn pretty much everything there is about Bull’s people and the Chargers and about Bull himself.On the field he just asks Bull loads of questions concerning Qunari and also flirting with him shamelessly. But Josie isn’t an idiot... she see’s the genuine aspects within him. She is good at that and they work together a lot actually. They... actually become pretty close.

Leli is the only one who knows about his work in the Inquisition btw. He has considered asking her to be one of her confidants as she is the only one (depending on verse) that really knows what his work entails. She still supports him. That was enough to gain his support in turn. But srsly.... She has said multiple times if Tavis leads Josie on she will literally chop his parts off and send them to his best friends. He applauded her for gusto and smirked of course. ... He still flirts with Josie because he can’t help himself. XD But he tries to tone it down because Leli scares the shit out of him.

// Hahahaha it’s hilarious later on. Sera ignites the childlike wonder in him and he gets to just be... an absolute dork with her at all times. It is refreshing and he can just be silly. She really thought some dumb elfy elf would be more elfy. But... Tavis is the least elfy of all the elves in the Inquisition. He doesn’t even shout random nonsense at her like Solas does. When Solas does spout random elven at her ... Tavis knows what it means and quips back giving her a high five. Then promptly plans pranks on Solas with her like lizard bedrolls and putting whipped cream on his head when he falls asleep at his desk.

//Alright so they have some differences at first. Tavis thinks Solas is a pompous asshole even though he himself eschews the traditional Dalish way of thinking it really irritates him how Solas speaks against the Dalish and most elves in general(from his perspective). Of course... this makes it really interesting. Because Solas assumes Tavis is Dalish and Tavis doesn’t deny it because he finds the assumption amusing. That is literally his reasoning. He simply doesn’t deny it and then later is like... no I’m not actually Dalish. Eventually... Tavis is like... yeah I don’t really follow Dalish practices and have do things to actually help my people not just the tattoo’d ones. Then it gets really awkward and Tavis is like jfc Solas... I also can understand pretty much all of the elven you speak... Tavis: "I lied... I can actually understand nearly every elvhen thing you say" Solas: "Truly? I doubt that." Tavis: "You are very sassy." Solas: <sighs> Tavis: <smirks> Like that time you told Sera to stick her lizards up her ass. Solas: <silent> Tavis: <is pleased with himself> Tbh their relationship is one of my favorites because Solas’ biases really get to him but at the same time they can have really interesting conversations. They both have inquisitive and philosophical minds.They love going on about philosophy, history and stories once they get past the personality difference.

//Hahaha omg they have so much fun! THEY HAVE SO MUCH FUN! They play cards a lot actually. They hang out a lot. Tavis pretty much drools over his stories and Varric... (lets be honest) loves the attention. They quip, make silly jokes and really fuck with people whenever they can... especially Cassandra. Because how could Tavis pass up that opportunity. He is such an ass. Really these two just mess around and enjoy life together. Tavis and Varric are the nightlife in Skyhold. They gather people together and form the stories.

//Hehehehe ahhhhhhhhh. They went shopping together once. Just for the winter palace. Vivienne really doesn’t like Tavis at first (no shit).... Is it that surprising rofl... he is wary of her but is willing to experience her weird world, learn and have fun fucking with her.  He loves their shared salt though... he cherishes it. She knows this ... So it is kind of a back and forth mean girls salt fest between them both.

Where to begin? For those of you that may not already know, Disney’s Animal Kingdom is one of the many fun-filled adventure parks apart of Disney World located in Orlando, Florida. This spring break my family and I all took a week-long trip and explored the various parks in the area. In this post, I’m going to share my personal experience at the park, and talk about all the tips & tricks I have for you to make the best of your OWN trip!

OUR DAY AT ANIMAL KINGDOM

The first thing to know about the Disney parks is that for every ticket purchased, you are automatically given three (3) fast passes to the rides of your choosing. (TIP: Book your fast passes as early as you can to guarantee you get to ride the most important rides to you!) If you book your fast passes back-to-back, you also have the option to get a 4th fastpass at no additional cost. Unfortunately, our fast passes were not back-to-back so we only had 2 for that day.

Our journey through Animal Kingdom started out at “Finding Nemo: The Musical”. Truthfully, I didn’t know what to expect. I thought it would be fun for the kids but maybe not something I would enjoy as much…but I was completely wrong! It was such a great show with amazing performers – I was blown away thinking of all the hard work and talent that was put into the making of that kind of show. Not to mention Charlie and Keatyn had a blast; they were singing and dancing along the whole time!

For the next 2 hours until our lunch reservation, we walked around exploring all Animal Kingdom had to offer – including picking up some popcorn and Mickey Mouse-shaped ice cream bars along the way. During this time we checked out the most original and iconic part of the park, “The Tree of Life”. Inside the tree is the “It’s Tough to be a Bug” 4D experience. Our personal experience with that did not go so well. Unfortunately, Keatyn was terrified the whole time and had a panic attack. Charlie wasn’t as bad with it as Keatyn, but she definitely didn’t enjoy it either. Ultimately, I do not recommend that ride for your smaller kids as it may be too intense.

Next, we spent some time walking around “Africa” and “Asia”, spotting plenty of famous Disney characters such as the cast of Disney Pixar’s “Up”, and joining a giant dance party. Located right next to the dance party was a quaint little bar called “Yak & Yeti Quality Beverages”, where we picked up some delicious margaritas. Across the street behind the dance area at a small concession cart, was the only place in Animal Kingdom where you could get “spiked dole whip” aka soft-serve ice cream with rum. It was delicious.

We then headed to our lunch reservation at “Tiffins”, which is one of the highest-rated restaurants in all of Walt Disney World. Some of their popular dishes include that of Wagyu beef, lamb, and duck. Everything including the service was phenomenal. There are plenty of other fantastic restaurants to try such as Tusker House, Flame Tree Barbecue, and the Harambe Market. Not to mention there is a Rainforest Cafe located inside the park as well.

Right down from Tiffins you’ll find the newest and most anticipated part of the park, “Pandora: The World of Avatar”. Pandora is based off of the planet and home of the Na’vi from the box office hit, “Avatar”. (TIP: If you want to ride the NA’VI RIVER JOURNEY or FLIGHT OF PASSAGE, you’re definitely going to want to have a fastpass for those unless you want to wait 2-4+ hours in line.) Unfortunately, we did not have a fastpass for either of the rides in Pandora, as they sold out before we got the chance. Pandora was truly stunning nonetheless. Between the floating rocks, the music, the glowing paths, and so much more straight from the movie, just walking through it was an experience in itself.

Our next stop was the “Maharajah Jungle Trek” and our final fastpass of the day, “Kilimanjaro Safaris”. Within these two adventures, we got to see a huge variety of animals including lions, elephants, tigers, gorillas (which actually terrified me more than any other animal), giraffes, and SO many more! It was like we were genuinely inside of “The Lion King”. Out of every ride in Animal Kingdom, excluding Pandora, the safari is the one I would recommend the most for a fastpass. It is a MUST if you are visiting!

By this point in the day, we had done so much yet so little. There is SO much to do that it’s nearly impossible to do everything there in one day. So the safari was our last stop. Out of all our Disney park days, Animal Kingdom was our shortest. It was so much fun though. I definitely could’ve gone a whole other day and done every other thing I didn’t get to do or see the first time. Overall, we had a fantastic time and I definitely want to go back again!

DO’S AND DON’TS / IMPORTANT INFO TO KNOW

DO make sure to have plenty of water and sunscreen. An important thing to know is that yes, the parks DO let you bring in your own waters, snacks, etc.

DO get your fastpasses as early as possible. If you have specific rides that you want to do more than the others, I suggest putting that as a top priority.

DO expect to spend some money. Even if you’re just buying a bottle of water, that alone will cost you almost $4….it’s definitely not cheap.

DO expect to wait in line for AT LEAST 15-20+ minutes per ride. This does vary depending on the popularity of the ride given the “It’s Tough to be a Bug” only had about a 15 minute wait and two of the rides inside Pandora had a 3-4 HOUR wait.

DON’T rush your day. If you are wanting to do every ride, I suggest taking two days to explore the whole thing. If you try to do it all in one day, you’ll be completely exhausted. Plus, it’s probably almost impossible to do everything in one day due to the wait times.

They DO have single and double strollers available for rent if needed. We brought our own for Charlie but they do have them at the park worst case. You cannot take the actual strollers on most rides but they do have designated stroller areas to leave it.

Note that we did have our visit during spring break so it was definitely very busy but how busy it is will depend on what time of the year and week you go, as well as what time. Regardless, it’ll always be fairly busy at any Disney park so if you’re not into big crowds or long lines, you might want to avoid it altogether. It is always possible that at any moment a ride will be temporarily closed down for repairs so make sure to check any info about ride shutdowns before your visit! (The Kali River Rapids was temporarily closed during our visit.)

#TMIishTuesday #44 - Weird Sayings in English, German, and Dutch

Hey there mighty people of the internet! And welcome to issue #44 of #TMIishTuesday - my weekly Tumblr post about what goes through my weird mind and what you guys want to know more about. It can be something very personal, it can be something political, it can be completely pointless - but in 99.9 % of the cases, it involves opinions. And mine as well. // Last week I went quite cliché - again and reflected on my personal year 2016. Veeeeeeery long post but totally worth reading, if you want to know more about me! // In other news, I held the first poll of 2017 and the first poll in like… 4 weeks or so (?) for you to decide today's topic on Twitter. And you guys were interested in what I have to say about those "Weird Sayings". And... you guys, I just love languages! Languages are everything: Strange, very straightforward, not logical, ridiculous, inventive, confusing, never the same, I could go on forever. This is probably gonna be a long post again. #ifyoucouldnttellalready I'll take some bits and bobs from my experiences of speaking three languages - within a minute at times - and bring up some examples from that. If you don't know German or Dutch, don't you worry. I got you! I'll translate to English. As best as possible. #notyetaprofessionalinterpreter Let's start with the initial reason why I came up with the idea to write about this topic: The word "fangirling". If you are not a fangirl yourself, you probably don't have a clue what I'm talking about. Let's take a look into the urban dictionary for help (that's a very handy website for checking what slang means btw, it has saved my life numerous times! Else I wouldn't have been able to understand a lot of videos). Urban dictionary defines "fangirl" as: "A rabid breed of human female who is obesessed with either a fictional character or an actor. Similar to the breed of fanboy. Fangirls congregate at anime conventions and livejournal. Have been known to glomp, grope, and tackle when encountering said obsessions." ...and "fangirling" as: "v. 1. the reaction a fangirl has to any mention or sighting of the object of her "affection". These reactions include shortness of breath, fainting, highpitched noises, shaking, fierce head shaking as if in the midst of a seizure, wet panties, endless blog posts, etc. 2. a gathering of two or more fangirls in which they proceed to waste endless amounts of time ogling, discussing/arguing, stalking, etc. the object of their "affection" " I first learned about "fangirls" on YouTube watching some international YouTuber. Might have been Tyler Oakley, who himself has probably more fangirls any YouTuber will ever have. Looking to the word "fangirl", it makes me notice two things: 1. It's an absolutely brilliant neologism! Perfectly descriptive of its meaning. A "girl" who is a big "fan" of someone: "fangirl". "Fangirling" then is just the act of being such "fangirl". 2. Why is the term "fangirl" so common, while I haven't even heard of a "fanboy"? Why do I have to be "fangirling" when I like to go crazy about a celebrity? Shouldn't I be "fanboying" instead? And thinking inclusively: What about non-binary people who I identify as neither "boy" nor "girl" but somewhere along the spectrum instead? It's that slightly discriminative thing that exists in lots of languages when they just use one word that has an attribute of one gender attached to it to mean both genders. As far as I have noticed, it's not that prevalent in the English language as it is in German and Dutch. Well done, you creators of English! When you talk about a hair dresser that is neutral. It can be either gender. In German ("Friseur" for male; "Friseurin" for female) and Dutch ("kapper" and "kapster" respectively) you don’t have a unisex form: "I went to the hair dresser's to get a haircut yesterday. She did an awesome job!" would be "Ich bin gestern beim Friseur gewesen. Sie hat es richtig gut gemacht!" in German and "Ik ben gisteren naar de kapper geweest. Ze heeft het heel goed geknipt!" (That’s probably not translated too well, but you get my point, right? :D) Notice how both languages use the male form instead of the (correct) female form. Just because you refer to the hair dresser's place instead of the hair dresser herself. Obviously the English language discriminates as well. Think about police men or post men. Have you ever heard someone say "police women"? No, you probably haven't. Granted, I've never lived in a country where English was the native language. But I think it's ridiculous that we have that separation in so many terms, especially with professions. If you want to use the politically correct form, it sounds incredibly unsophisticated. When I read German flyers that are published by governmental organisations, I'm close to puking. "Die Schüler_innen" - yes, there are not only male students in that class (and this form of writing also includes non-binary people - as opposed to “SchülerInnen”). But why make such a mess of it. I think we should introduce a neutral form to use in such occasions. We have neutral pronouns, even to describe people (think of they/them or ze/zir). Why don't we use them for these occasions as well? But alright, I can tell you are getting bored of my political correctness talks again. Let's get on with this post. How about false friends? You may have some in real life (though I hope you don't), but I'm talking about words that sound similar in different languages, but have a completely different meaning. First one that sprang to my mind: The German "Handy". I mean… I have to give you that: A mobile phone is indeed handy. But I've seen lots of people using the word in English to refer to a mobile phone, when native speakers would probably have no idea what they are talking about. Or take "actual" which is actually a great example! actual ≠ aktuell. The English word "actual" is translated to German as eigentlich, tatsächlich; the German "aktuell" means current or up-to-date in English. And there are obviously some with Dutch as well. Take the German word "allemal" and the Dutch word "allemaal". "Allemaal" is often added to a plural pronoun: "wij" (we), "jullie" (you), or "zij" (they), to underline that everyone is involved. And without a doubt it is one of the most frequently used words in Dutch. The German "allemal" is slightly old-fashioned and not used much anymore. It means “certainly” or “for sure”. Another example: The German "fahren" (to ride or to drive) is obviously used very often, while "varen" in Dutch isn't. It sounds very similar, but only refers to "travelling by boat" instead of including pretty much any means of travel, like the German “fahren”. Dutch and English are more fitting. In a way... For “actual” it’s the same story as with German (called "actueel" in Dutch). For the rest: "map" exists in both English and Dutch. But the Dutch word means “folder”, while the English word translates to Dutch as "landkaart". And finally: "room". If you ask a receptionist of a hotel for a "free room" (or a "vrije room") in Dutch, you'll probably get very puzzled and confused looks. Why would you look for free whipped cream? I mean... I'm sure you could get some at a hotel, but… The word you were looking for is "kamer". (And while we’re on it: The Dutch “room” is pronounced with a long “o” sound) When I write a post about languages, I certainly have to address the "Schmetterling" issue. The moment you leave Germany and start talking in a different language, everyone will make remarks about how harsh and really NOT smooth German sounds. And on the one hand you're right! German certainly won’t win the "Best sounding language" award. But on the other hand: Which language should win that award? Dutch also sounds very rough at times. Just think about the "harde G" (hard G) in Friesland and how it sounds to strangers. Let me tell you first hand: It sounds freaking scary! I mean… you'll get used to it, but at first it's very frightening! And English… I mean you basically get to choose between the incredibly posh British English and the American version that - sorry to you Americans out there - quite honestly sounds very wishy-washy to me. And at times the pronunciation is a little too drawn-out for me. Talking about drawn-out things: In an attempt to not draw out this post any more, I'll leave you with this. The four will run at the Dutch championships shortly and over the course of the now intensified trainings, Sieger gets close to his best friend Stef. It's a great plot which shows the struggles of a gay relationship when one partner doesn't fully live up to it. Okay, enough of the spoilers! I suggest you find yourself a site that shows English subtitles with it and watch it! :D And if you know Dutch and don’t need subtitles, you can just head over to npo.nl.
