i’m tired as heck rn so i’m gonna tell u guys a little story that’s been told a million times but i love it: how Petty Michaelangelo was. 

So, background. Michelangelo doesn’t paint. Much. A lot of the stuff we know about is from the Sistine Chapel, which is the best achievement in religious art mostly for one reason: he hated doing it and it SHOWED. But that’s later. Now is background. He loved sculpture. 

The only reason he ever did any painting was a fresco to show that Leonardo da Vinci would NEVER be the artist of Florence. That man was a genius and never finished anything, really. That pissed Michelangelo off because he was the type of artist that had to have things finished, he felt it was important. Leo was a little bitch who invented shit and had cool doodles. 

So. 

The Pope asks Micky to design his tomb. Alright, shit. No problem. But the pope--or rather, his account--is stingy with money because he doesn’t like artists even though the only way the church was really surviving was through good art because when people can’t read, they look at art and listen to what people say about religion. If you didn’t have art, you bet your ass no one would come to service. And the pope probably wasn’t all that interesting or whatever. I’d rather look at a painting that SLAPS then listen to some old dude talk about salvation if I were a poor person. Poor people died early. 

so THEN this bitch, Pope Julius II. He was known as the “Warrior Pope” because he was pretty active in combat situations and was basically like the Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee figure of the religious world. 

but. he sees this fresco that michelangelo did and he’s like “oh shit i have to have something like that” 

(which, before hand, he wanted a bronze CAST sculpture--which Michelangelo never did bc u wanna know how hard that is? hella) but now he’s like “I want you to paint the Sistine Chapel” 

now michelangelo was a Bad Bitch who consistently pissed off most religious leaders bc he was like “okay well you need to pay me more money and i need supplies and this sucks.” and he generally talked back. A ton of religious figures thought he was wack, which was true! he was 

so julius originally was like “hey i want twelve apostles” and michel’s just like “...hoe.” he didn’t do painting anyway and if he was going to do it, he damn well wasn’t gonna do just the apostles. he was an all or nothing kind of guy 

so then he wants to freehand it and everyone’s so tired they say yes to it. Which is where the Fun Shit comes in 

You have The Last Judgment where that is a result of Cardinal Carafa and him having a Truly Salty Dispute about nudity and shit bc carafa was like “you’re painting dicks and boobs and that’s not cool!” and michelangelo just basically flipped him the bird and painted him in as Minos, the dude who’s the judge of the underworld. (they later got an artist who covered up all thedicks and boobs but no one liked him bc he was a little bitch) 

also, the last judgement wasn’t painted until like 20 or more years after the ceiling bc U Know...Shit Happens 

so in that time no one really depicted god bc he was like This All Mythical Being but michelangelo said FUCK and did it anyway so that’s cool and now the way he painted god is how a lot of people look at him (old, gray beard, muscular. imagine if michelangelo made him hotter. wow) 

also i’m just saying how pissed do you all think michelangelo would be if he knew that his most famous work was technically the sistine chapel. how badly.
