A few weeks ago Shabazz Palaces returned with a new song called "Angela", which is the first single from their upcoming LP, Exotic Birds Of Prey. Like their last LP, Robed in Rareness, EBOP is shaping up to be a highly collaborative affair that features members of the band's extended orbit on nearly every song. "Angela" is a particularly unusual development for SP given that the band's frontman and lone member, Ismael Butler, doesn't rap on the song whatsoever, instead ceding the space to bars courtesy of Stas THEE Boss (formerly of THEEsatisfaction) and background vocals courtesy of Irene Barber. The music is dank, dour electronic funk propelled by jittery drum programming and squelchy synths with vast pockets of space for Stas to roam in, bookended by samples of a lecture. While more off the cuff seeming than what we usually get from SP, "Angela" is nonetheless a satisfying experiment that tastefully shines the spotlight on a few talented guests while pushing their sound into stranger, more unpredictable realms.
