Hello! I absolutely love your blog, everything from your festival recounts to animation analysis and programming (one of tumblr's recommended posts was the one where you made your own rasteriser, and I liked your attitude in what I've read so much that I'm gonna attempt to conquer my 3-year-long grudge against using opengl during college and do something similar now that I'm a bit older and have no deadlines :D).
But anyway, I have 2 questions (sorry if there's easily accessible answers, tumblr search is not helping): 1. During your animation nights, does the screen stay black while everyone watches their own video while you provide commentary? I haven't caught any yet but maybe someday! And 2. do you have any youtube channels or just one-off video essays that you like that also cover animation/directors? Or, even programming lol.

For the Animation Nights, I just stream the video over Twitch from local sources on my computer, typically by playing the video in mpv and recording it in OBS. This is obviously not ideal from a video quality perspective, but it's the easiest way to watch video in sync without making everyone download files in advance. Then we all chat in the Twitch chat box (in large part to crack stupid jokes, it's not that highbrow lmao). I've gotten away with it so far!
As for youtube channels, I can recommend...
anime production/history (i.e. sakuga fandom)
SteveM is likely the most sakuga-fan affiliated anituber. He makes long, well-researched and in-depth videos on anime history, usually themed around a particular director or studio.
Pyramid Inu might be my fave anituber - very thoughtful analysis of Gundam, obscure mecha anime and oldschool BL and similar topics. tremendously soothing voice too.
The Canipa Effect does excellent deep dives into the production of specific shows, both western and anime. I appreciate the respect he gives to the Korean animators of shows like AtlA in particular!
Sean Bires's 2013 presentation on sakuga is pretty foundational to this whole subcultural niche, and a great place to get an introduction to the major animator names to know and significant points in the history of anime. unfortunately a couple of the segments got slapped down by copyright but the rest holds up!
animation theory (for animators and aspirants)
I'm going to focus here on resources that are relevant to animation in general, and 2D animation. if I was going to list every Blender channel we'd be here all week :p
New Frame Plus is one of the best channels out there for game animation, describing in tightly edited videos how animation principles work in a game context and analysing the animation of various games. highly recommend
Videogame Animation Study is similar, examining the animation of specific games in detail
the 'twelve principles of animation' (defined by Disney's Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas) remain the standard approach to animation pedagogy; there are various videos on them, but Alan Becker (of Animator vs Animation) has quite a popular series. I haven't actually watched these but many people swear by them! Dermot O'Connor expands the list to 21. Note that some of the terminology can be a little inconsistent between different animators - c.f. 'secondary motion'...
Dong Chang is an animator at Studio NUT, who produces a lot of fantastic, succinct videos on standard techniques in the anime industry, timesheet notations, etc. etc. Studio Bulldog, a small anime studio, are a good complement; they focus more on douga than genga and are generally a bit more traditional.
programming
big topic here, I'm going to focus on game dev and tech art since that's my field. but also some general compsci stuff that's neat
SimonDev - graphics programmer with a bunch of AAA experience, fantastic explanations of advanced optimisations and some of the more counterintuitive aspects of rendering
Acerola - graphics programmer who makes very detailed guides to a variety of effects with a very rapid and funny 'guy that has seen monogatari' editing style. When he's good, he's really good. His video on water is probably the best one I've seen (though I can recommend a couple of others).
TodePond - the most charming, musical videos about recursion and cellular automata you've ever seen. less programming tutorial and more art in themselves.
Ben Eater - known for his breadboard computer series, a fantastic demonstration of how to go from logic gates up to the 6502 with actual hardware. worth watching just for how clean he puts the wires on his breadboards like goddamn man
Sebastian Lague, Useless Game Dev - both do 'coding adventure' style videos where they spend a few weeks on some project and then document it on Youtube, resulting in a huge library of videos about all sorts of fascinating techniques. great to dive into
Freya Holmér - creator of the 'shapes' library, makes videos on mathematical programming, with gorgeously animated vector graphics. Her video on splines is a particular treat.
There are definitely many more channels I can recommend on these subjects, but I'll need to dig into my history a bit - unfortunately I need to rush out right now, but hopefully that should be good to be getting going with!

Roleplay/Ask blog for "victim." from Animator vs Animation. 18+ only.
Rules: I block minors/ageless accs, I do ask karma, no racism/transphobia/proshipping/weird shit obviously. I tend to block extremely easily it isn't a judgement.
Content warnings: kidnapping, torture, abuse, drug use and self harm. the thing is, this series is goofy while balancing these topics. It's a cartoon! It's not that serious, but the warning is still applicable. Just remember, these guys are just stick figures on a screen. Specifically made to beat each other up. Lets get looneytunes with it.

Plot and character information underneath:
Vic, or more specifically "victim." is a sentient piece of vent art from the series Animator vs. Animation, he exists within a universe where art is sentient and alive as a sort of computer program or shimeji. After experiencing a mass deletion of his and many other sources of art he was close to, he has decided to avenge his wife and biggest supporter, Mitsi- and frankly himself- by targeting @forchosen, a stick figure who was responsible for the deletion, and using her both as a way to get vengeance as well as using her to track down his creator "Noogai" (Alan Becker/The Cursor) to take down once and for all. The plot is entirely contained within a fictional canon, and the characters themselves are all exclusively held within the internet. F2F likely won't happen unless vic visits them on their computer screen, or your character is able to enter the internet somehow!
victim. is the current (new) CEO and founder of "Rocket Corp." a tech corporation that has a vicegrip on all of stick city, which is the canon Vic has escaped to after forcefully breaking out of Noogai's desktop. He lives with his bodyguard (Agent "Cool GUI") of nearly eleven years, and the two of them are almost always seen with each other, there's no separating these two. Vic has very strong manipulation skills when it comes to the fabric of his animated reality, due to stealing his animators program tools before escaping. He has entrusted Agent GUI to take these and use them to his desire, trusting Agents choices when it comes to protecting him more than anything. The two of them have spent the last seven years hunting down @forchosen and have only recently imprisoned her, and the rest of the stick figures she brought with her. Victim has currently been using her as a stressball.
Despite all of this, Victim isn't anyone you should really be all that scared of. While he can be a hardass and extremely unwell at times, Noogai and his creations are Victims only target. Vic's body is coded to be explicitly weaker than most other stick figures, unable to withstand most violence that they are coded to withstand and even enjoy/seek out as a "species." Any of his aggression typically comes from the fact that he very well cannot protect himself, or at least, doesn't believe he can due to his experiences with Noogai. Despite losing Mitsi, he still isn't exactly interested in hurting or attacking anyone who isn't connected to Noogai. He has just developed extremely, extremely strong horse blinders to the world around him, and due to his the abuse he was put through in his earlier years of existence, he already had a lot of screws loose. Mitsi's death was just the final thing to knock him off his rocker for good.
Vic uses he/him pronouns only, and only masculine terms, but doesn't identify as a man or male. They just happened to be what he was called in comparison to Mitsi and he has no desire to change those things. Mentally, he is somewhere maturity level around his early thirties, but due to his jaded and awkward behaviors many people assume he's older than he actually is. He is unaware that he has DID, this will become more important later. Rocket Corp. is currently solely focused on hiring more soldiers and more employees, increasing profit margins with a specific goal to kill Noogai. This is seen as an extremely fringe belief/target, and Victim in his universe is regarded as an unwell and deeply traumatized religious nut or worse, actively a part of The Great Disappearance.
Due to Victims circumstances and breaking through the confines of "canon" while escaping from Noogai's desktop, his crash landing in the Shepherds Canon left him with quite a reputation. Like a fallen angel, he crashed down from space-heaven with the ability to create out of thin air, able to make a whole windmill out of nothing due to the adobe powers he had stolen from Noogai. This had created quite the image for him and Mitsi, a somewhat otherworldly and angelic pairing that broke down from the sky and started fixing everyone's tangible issues with very little expectations for anything in return. They were both immediately welcomed in to the farm town that surrounded the shepherds land, and immediately they were made at home. After The Great Disappearance, this left a sour taste in the people of Stick Cities mouth. No longer did Victim seem like this harmless blessing but an easy target to point fingers at for the terrorist attack- especially due to the fact that he looked eerily like the attacker. He was grey, and she was black, and those were the only differences. Victim was also the stick to invent the idea of color bucketing people- changing their color at will. He became a conduit for sticks who wanted someone easy to blame, and that only pushed him further into his paranoid delusions. Through this, and his own increasingly hostile behavior, Vic lost almost everyone who had taken him in, other than Agent.
Victim currently has his eyes on "The Dark Lord", a stick he hasn't seen before that he has only parsed through The Chosen Ones vague memories. This devilish figure has caught his attention in a way he hasn't been able to let go of, projecting himself- and a little bit of Mitsi onto what he's seen in Chosens memories, she's left a massive impact on Vic. He plans to do something about it.

AvGeometry [An Analysis]
Disclaimer: This is a very short Analysis for Animation vs. Geometry by Alan Becker. I am not a geometer, (according to Merriam-Webster, a person who specializes in geometry) this purely for fun.
First of all, I will NOT explain everything in the video. I will just focus on answering a few questions to which I found the answer for. I also have some conclusions at the end.
I will leave the in-depth explanations of everything to those YouTubers. Also, I have linked my sources using hyperlinks.
So, let's get into it- shall we?
Let's start with-
Which version of TSC is the main character for this one?
If you read my AvPhysics Analysis, you would realize that I named the TSC with the cowboy hat TSC_0 of Universe D.
Since the start of the AvGeometry video, I immediately realized that this is NOT the same guy from AvMath, since he didn't show signs of aggressiveness with phi Φ.
He's more curious versus the guy in AvMath who attacked Euler's Identity immediately. This is also the same guy who spawned in AvPhysics, TSC_0.
I think this MC is a TSC from a different Universe. I will call him TSC_0 of the AvG Universe.
Now you might ask yourself, why did I gave him the 0 designation?
Because the video ended with another TSC knocking at the point.
Now, you might argue, that this is not a perfect loop because there is a line below the point. While the start of the video, doesn't have that line.
You are right. Again, if you read my AvPhysics Analysis, I said that the TSCs in there are not stuck in a time loop.
It's just an infinite cycle that happens to different versions of them. Everyone spends only a short amount of time inside the singularity.
So the next TSC to arrive will not be TSC_0 but TSC_1.
How did TSC and phi Φ beat that Boss?
To start, let's define a few things. Click the hyperlinks to view my source.
Polyhedron - is any three-dimensional figure with flat faces that are polygons. They intersect at straight, linear edges. The edges themselves intersect at points called vertices.
Tetrakis Hexahedron - It is a Catalan Solid with 24 isosceles triangle faces and 14 vertices. It is the d24 die. It is also a 3-dimensional polyhedron, not 4D.
Now, first of all, the Boss is not 4D. It is two Tetrakis Hexahedrons overlapping each other and rotates at different speeds.
Platonic Solids - a convex polyhedron that is regular, in the sense of a regular polygon. These are also 3D shapes. There are Five Platonic Solids
Note that this not the original image from the website, but I rearranged the rows to highlight my points. I also added the dice names, incase you're more familiar with DnD.
In fighting the Boss, TSC and phi Φ started with lines that has 2 vertices or points. Then they slowly moved to the Platonic Solids, eventually defeating the Boss using a dodecahedron.
The Boss had 14 vertices vs the dodecahedron that had 20.
Now, I can't really say why more vertices is superior. It could be structural integrity, or the idea that the universe's topology and shape, references the shape of dodecahedron.
Or, that the golden ratio is the length from the vertex to the center of the dodecahedron, and is also the ratio of the diagonal of the pentagonal face as demonstrated in the video.
The Hyperdodecahedron and Singularity
Hyperdodecahedron aka 120-cell is the convex regular 4-polytope (four-dimensional analogue of a Platonic solid.) It is the 4-dimensional analogue of the regular dodecahedron. It has 720 pentagonal faces and 600 vertices.
It's basically 4D dodecahedron.
According to ChatGPT, in higher-dimensional geometry and theoretical physics, singularities often refer to points or regions where certain physical quantities become infinite or undefined.
Here's how I see it. If that yellow dot is indeed a singularity, the only explanation I could come up with, is at some point, the hyperdodecahedron's infinite insides would shrink to a single point in its 4-dimensional space.
Fractals
Now I think these are fractals by I cannot be sure. Also, I couldn't get a definite answer as to how fractals would be relevant to singularities.
What I got from ChatGPT were related to the event horizon instead.
That irregularities of the event horizon might have fractal patterns or exhibit fractal characteristics in its shape when examined at a different (smaller) scale.
The visual and structural complexity of the event horizon evoke fractal-like qualities.
Now, this Analysis is a lot shorter, and also inconclusive. I did try my best. My brain is now mush.

Alan finished hooking up the last cord, plugging it into his PC. A small smile went on his face. He never thought it would be possible, but here it is. He grabbed the VR headset off of his desk, doing one more final check that everything was plugged in, and put it on.
Alan’s vision was black. His heart jumped in his chest, possibilities racing through his mind. Had something gone wrong? Did he not hook it up correctly? But after a second, his vision slowly faded back and he saw the classic, default background of his computer screen.
Yes! Alan pumped his hands in the air, it worked!
He took a closer look at himself. He was actually a stick figure! On his own computer! His skin was a deep purple color, and was flawlessly smooth. Alan also hands, which was a tad strange. He then felt a pair of glasses hanging from his head -- good to know his imperfect vision followed him into this world.
He stood in front of a tall, minecraft house. It’s different from the last time Alan saw it -- it was for one, much taller than the one story building it was before, and two, well. Alan didn’t really have a two.
His stick figures weren’t visible on the desktop, so they must be the source of the noise from inside. It was honestly really, really strange seeing the house from the side angle (or was it the front angle? It did have the door, after all…)
Right as Alan was about to step closer, the door swung open and there stood Orange. Wait. How is Alan meant to communicate to them?
He waved, hoping it wouldn’t show how nervous he felt. Orange continued to stare at Alan, before glancing back into the house.
“Uhm.” Orange could talk? “Hi. Who are you?”
Oh, duh, he doesn’t recognize me. Alan opened his mouth to talk (wait, mouth?) but nothing came out. How does he talk?
Orange was clearly starting to worry now, the stick glancing back and forth between Alan and the house. Alan perked up, pointing to his own chest, then pointing towards where his cursor sat dormant. Orange, you’re smart. It’s me!
“Oh, Alan?” Orange’s eyes lit up as he looked up and towards the left. Alan followed his gaze, and oh. The stick figures could see Alan through the monitor. It was like looking through bathroom glass -- you couldn’t see the details, but you could see the major shapes and colors. And Alan was looking at himself, his real body, with the big black VR set over his head.
Orange took Alan’s hands, his eyes bright and full of life. Orange was shorter than Alan, having to look up to meet his eyes. “This is so cool! You’re here! You’re actually here! How did you get on the desktop? Did you really do this for us?” Orange spoke quickly, tapping his feet quickly as he spoke. “Oh, right, you don’t know how to talk. Gosh, how did Green try and explain this to me?”
Orange let go of Alan’s hands, rubbing his chin while thinking. “Okay! Green said that it has to come from your diaphragm,” Orange said, poking Alan in his chest. “Uhm. So just, focus a lot on it? And really think about what you want to say.”
That… doesn’t really help. But it’s the only thing Alan has going for him right now, so he takes a deep breath. He closes his eyes, and, “hello?”
Orange gasps, his arms quickly shaking up and down. Talking was different than Alan was used to, but it still felt natural. Like he was supposed to talk like this. “Oh my Cursor, it worked! Green’s gonna be so happy that you did all of this for his birthday!”
Oh, God, it was Green’s birthday?
Orange’s face dropped slightly, “you didn’t know? Blue said she put it in your calendar a week ago.”
“Hey, it’s okay,” Alan said, slowly, still getting used to how it works to talk here. “Just… Give me a moment. Uh, how long has Blue used she/her pronouns?”
“Oh, Blue doesn’t care what you call him!” Orange’s smile was back. “We all alternate for their pronouns.”
Okay, okay. So one of Alan’s stick figures doesn’t use explicitly he/him pronouns. One, at least. God, has Alan ever actually asked about it? He’ll need to ask about it sometime, write it down maybe.
As Alan was about to speak, the door to the house opened, revealing a black stick figure with a hollow head. Alan’s heart spiked, and he instinctively put Orange behind his own body. Orange let out a confused noise as Alan’s heart dropped, watching flames ignite in the stick figure’s hands.
“I don’t know what you’re doing here,” Alan started, keeping an arm out infront of Orange. “But you need to leave. Now.”
He didn’t know what The Chosen One was doing on his computer again. He didn’t know what it was going to do to Orange, or any of the other stick figures. Orange could die. Alan’s stick body could, but Alan would be fine. He probably wouldn’t feel it. Even if he could feel pain, he would not let Orange get hurt.
“Wait, Alan, what--” Orange started asking, before he got moved away as The Chosen One flew at Alan with his hands alight. The Chosen One tackled Alan, easily pinning him down on the ground.
“I don’t know what you’re doing,” The Chosen One hissed in a low voice, “but I will not have you ruining this for anyone. I don’t know how you were able to get here, or why you decided to, but I can kill you right here.” The Chosen One’s grip on Alan tightened, and he gasped for air. The Chosen One looked to Orange, before looking back to Alan. “Lucky for you, Second here says that ae trusts you, and aer’s siblings trust you too. I do not. Lord does not. We know what you’ve done to our kind, I know what you’ve done to me. But we’re going to be nice, and civil for Green, and everyone else showing up to their birthday party tonight.”
The Chosen One let go of Alan, letting his back and head fall back onto the ground from where it was lifted. The Chosen One looked at Orange, and cringed slightly. “Sorry, Second… It won’t happen again. I’ll go talk to Lord, that way she knows He’s here. It won’t happen again,” The Chosen One muttered under The Chosen One’s breath, “not tonight, at least.”
The Chosen One walked inside, leaving Alan and Orange together. “What was that?!” Orange asked, “The Chosen One is like, one of the nicest people I know! The Chosen One could be a bit standoffish when we first met The Chosen One, but not aggressive!”
“I… Me, The Chosen One, and The Dark Lord don’t have a good history,” Alan sighs. “I wasn’t a good person, when I made them. I was young and stupid, and I treated The Chosen One like shit. I created The Dark Lord to try and kill The Chosen One, but that obviously didn’t work and they destroyed my computer. I haven’t seen them since. How did you meet them?”
“Oh, The Chosen One kidnapped me.”
“What?”
“But it’s okay though! The Chosen One found me, cause we’re spirituality connected, apparently? And The Chosen One knew I was uhm, ‘The Chosen One’s Return’ or ‘The Second Coming’ or whatever, and The Chosen One was getting hunted, and needed help… but it’s okay! So The Chosen One’s been hiding here with Lord!” Orange explained quickly, his -- aers voice and words getting jumbled together. “But it’s okay! You’ve changed, and so have The Chosen One and Lord! C’mon, we’re wasting time, Green’s gonna be so excited! And you can meet King and Purple, too!”
“Wait, Orange,” Alan said, causing Orange to turn and stop in aer’s tracks. “How… old are you guys?”
“Oh. Well, I’m the oldest! Well, out of us who live here normally. I’m thirteen, Blue’s twelve, Green’s turning twelve, Purple’s gonna be twelve soon too, Yellow’s eleven and Red’s ten! I don’t know how old The Chosen One or Lord is, though they say they’re young. King’s, like, ancient!”
“You guys are just kids?” Alan’s face dropped in horror. They are kids. They’re kids. Alan had killed Green, and Red, and Blue and Yellow, and tried to kill Orange. Alan tried to kill children.
Oh, God, how old was The Chosen One and The Dark Lord when Alan created them?
“Yep! We’re all kinda a family. Purple and Green are even twins!” Orange smiled, taking Alan’s hand. “C’mon! Everyone’s gonna start wondering where I went.”
Alan gets dragged inside, and if Alan thought it was small before, it’s even smaller when full of people. The chatter was loud, laughter breaking the sound. “Guys! We have a special guest!”
Alan saw that The Chosen One and The Dark Lord were off to the side, The Chosen One squeezing the other's hand.
Honestly, Lord was fuming. She never wanted to see Alan again, and was only on this computer again for Second’s siblings. Most of the time when Chosen invites the others over, it's at his and Chosen’s house.
Lord never wanted to see Alan again. Lord wants Alan dead.
But unfortunately, Lord was told to be nice tonight. Her teeth clenched, and Chosen squeezed her hand. “Just for tonight, Lord,” Chosen whispered, leaning Chosen’s head on Lord’s shoulder. “We just have to tolerate Him for Green.”
“I hate Him,” Lord said in a hushed voice, “I hate Him. I hate what He did to you, Chosen. He doesn’t deserve any of this. They don’t deserve it. They -- we know Second got manipulated to literally work for Alan to stay alive. He hasn’t changed, I know it.”
“I know, I know. But we just need to ignore Him. Second and aers friends want to stay here, and they all love Alan. That much is obvious.”
Lord sighs, his shoulders relaxing. “You’re right, I suppose. I’m just worried for them… Second’s practically your sibling, and everyone else is like Second’s siblings. I want them to have a good life. I don’t want Him holding everystick’s lives over everystick.” Lord closes her eyes, and decides to just focus on Chosen’s comfort. Chosen wraps an arm around Lord’s waist, pulling her close.
Lord and Chosen can ignore Him for one night. One night, and then they can go back home, safe, in their bed.
This is just one more horror the pair have to get through together. For Green. --------------------
Green was ecstatic. Not only was it his birthday, but Alan was actually here! Green wonders if He designed His character to be a deep purple hollowhead, or if the way He got here randomized it. Green likes to think that it matches Him.
“Happy birthday Green!” Everystick said at once before he blew out the candles. Blue baked the three layer cake, just for Green. As the flames go out, everyone cheers for him.
“Now I’m really older than you now!” Green laughed, nudging Purple’s shoulder. It rolled its eyes, hitting his shoulder.
“Oh, shut up. I’ll be the same age as you again next week!” Purple huffed, dramatically crossing its arms. King ruffled Purple’s head, who giggled.
“You weirdo. You said you wanted to invite everyone to our house for your birthday, right?” King asked, to which Purple hummed and nodded its head.
“You guys have a house?” Alan asked, and King jumped, forgetting the dark purple stick figure was there.
King cleared his throat. “Yes, me and Purple live together in Stick City. It’s… not the best, but this one-” King patted Purple’s shoulder, “-has been helping me. The little stick isn’t letting me slack a day to get my shit together.”
Purple laughed. “I mean, you just can’t continue living in that dumpster! I know you were struggling with your depression and revenge plot, but I can’t live with this mess, and I lived on the street!” Purple giggled, teasing King. Alan’s face dropped as King let out a hissed “Purple!”
Alan tentatively spoke, “you were homeless?”
It shrugged. “After my mom died I was, but I found a mac for a while, and then King found me! It’s my trauma, I can make jokes about it,” Purple said as if it was talking about the weather.
“A lot of sticks are homeless at one point or another,” Lord spoke up, and Chosen shot Lord a look. “Especially children, or sticks created by Cursors.”
“Lord,” Chosen warned quietly. Alan glanced at the two.
“Hell, me and Chosen were homeless for a long time. And when we finally tried to get a house, we couldn’t. We built our house, together, in a place in the middle of the woods.” Lord stepped towards Alan.
“The Dark Lord,” Chosen hissed, placing a hand on her shoulder. Chosen used Chosen’s other hand and held Lord’s in them -- Lord hadn’t even realized that her hands had burst into flame. She took a deep breath, and his hands unlit. “Sorry. I’m gonna step outside for some fresh air.”
Lord walked out of the house without a word. Chosen silently followed.
The whole house was silent as the pair walked out.
“Maybe I should go,” Alan sighed. “I can… do this-” He gestured to His body, “-another day. I don’t want to ruin the mood anymore. Have a happy birthday, Green,” Alan leaned down and gave Green a hug, and Orange, Yellow, Red, and Blue joined in.
“We don’t want you to leave!” Green frowned, holding onto Alan.
“The Chosen One and The Dark Lord trust you guys. They trust you all enough to come back here after everything my stupid, younger self did to them. I can come back here later. You only turn twelve once, yeah?” Alan smiles sadly, patting Green’s head. He let go of Alan, and Alan waved goodbye. “It was nice to meet you, King, and Purple.”
Alan walked outside, avoiding eye contact of the two other people and walked to the corner of his computer. Alan brought up the VR icon, jumping slightly as the panel opened up. His hand hovered over the exit button, glancing back. His voice stuck in his throat as he watched the two stick figures whispering to each other.
“For what it’s worth,” Alan started, catching the attention of the two, “I’m sorry. Orange has -- ae’s helped. They all have. If I knew what I know now, I wouldn’t have done any of that.”
And Alan hit the quit button.

id love to explain the story behind them but honestly you can do that yourself if you watch AvA in its entirety. the entire playlist has about a 1h30m runtime at the time of writing and despite having zero dialogue it is still extremely easy to follow and the storytelling is Immaculate
on top of this, all of the stick figures have their own well-defined personalities and interests, especially the RGBYO (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Orange/The Second Coming) squad, whom the Animation Vs Minecraft series revolve around! red likes animals and is sort of the tank of the group, green enjoys building, music, and other creative stuff and prefers ranged weapons, Blue is an avid farmer and good cook and only fights when needed (but is good at hand to hand combat), Yellow is the group's technician- good at coding, commands, redstone, and who comes up with innovative new ways to fight (fishing rods, anyone?), and TSC is a general all-rounder when it comes to specific interests who is good at any type of fighting and really just needs a nap. theres so much love and detail and thought poured into the series and the production crew has gone from one guy to an entire team in recent years, it's incredible to watch, 10/10 please give the silly little stick figures a try

aaahh hi, i've been a follower for some time now and wanted to spill the beans to say that your art is a great key motivator and inspiration for me. you and a few other artists are the reasons why I got back into drawing and pursuing animation as a career. I'm also gonna start going digital with my art and I would like to ask what app you currently use for your art and how you do your art( i.e. pro tablet, ipad etc.). thank you very much! your art brings me much joy, take care!

As for what tools i use, recently ive upgraded to an ipad pro + apple pencil, the art program i use is procreate, which doubles as both an art and animation app, and can be finnicky to use at first compared to other programs, but becomes smooth sailing once you get used to it, it also costs 10$, but there are free alternatives! For example, as a beginner I used medibang paint, which is a pretty great app to start off, but this is just my recommendation/the programs im familiar with! There are plenty more choices before you jump straight into buying procreate, the choice is yours :]

FLASHBack: Week 105 - Animator vs. Animation
Today on FLASHBack, we're going to get a little meta. Over the last two years, we've looked at roughly over six-hundred fifty Animations by various Flash Artists, but have only rarely taken the step back to look at the Animation process itself. So that's exactly what we're going to do, but not in the conventional way. Instead, we're going to be looking at a series of Flash Animations that takes its cues from the Looney Tunes classic Duck Amuck, in which a cartoon character ends up getting into a fight with the animator who's bringing them to life. And also touch upon intellectual property theft by a notorious content aggregator website along the way. On 3 June 2006, Alan "noogai" Becker uploaded Animator vs. Animation to Newgrounds. The next day, it was Frontpaged and took Daily 2nd Place, and by the end of the week it was the Weekly Users' Choice and the Review Crew Pick. The animation was of a stick figure "victim" being drawn in Flash, only to be tormented by the animator until the stick figure's selection box gets broken, letting him escape across Flash's user interface to take hold of the various drawing tools to defend himself. Five days later on 8 June 2006, the same Flash was uploaded to Albino Blacksheep. It was from there that the website eBaum's World ripped the Flash file to upload to their own site a day later. eBaum's had a bad reputation for stealing independent creators' viral content and hosting it on their own site without permission or compensation, even going so far as to strip credits and source watermarks from the content before uploading it to their own site. This is what they had done with Albino Blacksheep's authorized copy of Animator vs. Animation, but what eBaum's didn't know was that in addition to the visible "hosted at albinoblacksheep.com" that they removed, there was other tracking code embedded in the Flash that meant they'd been caught red-handed.
On 12 June 2006, the siterunner of Albino Blacksheep made a statement about the content theft. eBaum's World then approached Alan directly with an offer of $250 to buy the permission to continue to host the Flash on their site (as well as naming him the "winner" of a nebulous "Best Flash" contest that had a prize of an additional $1000). However, this money came with a price: Becker had to submit a statement for eBaum's to post, making it look like he was clearing them of blame. Alan, who was 17 at the time, and from a family that was not well off, had initially taken the money, but then sent it back, demanding that his Flash and the "Statement" he'd made be taken down. In a post made by Albino Blacksheep on 23 June 2006, it was pointed out that the statement had been pre-scripted by eBaum's to carefully sidestep the fact that while they had contacted Alan ahead of time asking to be able to host his animation, he'd told them no, and so they went and stole his file anyways. That post included an apology to the Flash community from Becker for falling into eBaum's trap. The animation and the statement were removed from eBaum's on 26 June 2006. After receiving funding from Atom Films, Becker would revisit the concept with Animator vs. Animation 2, posted to Newgrounds on 15 Mar 2007. It took the same slate of awards as the first, with the exception of being the Daily Feature instead of Daily 2nd Place. This time around the stick figure isn't labeled "victim" but instead "Chosen One" (possibly a Matrix reference). He immediately breaks out of his selection box on his own, and begins breaking the Flash user interface with fireballs. This time around The Animator has prepared an arsenal of weapons in Flash's library of animatable "Symbol" objects, including a SPNKR rocket launcher from Halo. However, the Chosen one breaks though Flash to get to the Windows XP desktop beneath (complete with the Bliss wallpaper). There he battles with the fox from the Firefox icon and the Stick Figure from the AOL Instant Messenger Icon. Finally, he's contained by an Avast Antivirus Scan (though alas, Avast's language settings were on plain English, and not he infinitely more fun "Pirate" setting). The animation ends with The Chosen One having been tamed and being used as a Pop-Up Blocker. Later, this animation would get a Live Orchestral Score courtesy of Joe-Pietro Abela, who used it for his Masters project at the Berklee College of Music. On 6 August 2011, Alan would upload the third chapter in the series to Newgrounds, where it again took the quadfecta of top awards. In this installment, The Chosen One breaks free of his enslavement as a Pop-Up Blocker, to again spread havoc throughout The Animator's computer. This time around the battle ranges across such iconic windows software as Microsoft Word, Solitaire, & Minesweeper. Clippy the Office Assistant proves to be a formidable foe, but eventually, The Animator has to open up Flash to draw a new red stick figure to be "The Dark Lord", coding him to go after The Chosen One. In the end however, the two team up and end up causing a Blue Screen of Death on The Animator's computer. It would be another three years before Becker would put Animator vs. Animation IV on Newgrounds, 2 October 2014, to the usual maximum acclaim. For this chapter, Alan had turned to Kickstarter to get support for production, raising $11,280 in donations. With that funding, he expanded the scope of the series, by not just showing what was happening on the computer screen, but also incorporating real world video of himself as The Animator. The Chosen One has a Second Coming, and when The Animator discovers this, the ensuing battle ranges from Facebook to The Animator's iPhone, and then back onto the computer via Dropbox. In his process of containing The Second Coming, The Animator realizes that The Second Coming is better at animating than he is, and strikes a bargain with him, allowing his continued existence in return for tutoring. After that, Alan would begin doing spinoffs, such as Animation vs. Minecraft and Animation vs. YouTube, where his stick figures would begin having adventures outside the context of Adobe Flash and interactions with The Animator. These would then be followed up with Animation vs League of Legends, Animation vs Pokemon, and Animation vs Super Mario Bros. However, in between those spinoff episodes, he would continue to produce the occasional short animation for the main Animator vs. Animation series, and on 5 Dec 2020, he compiled those shorts into Animator vs. Animation V, which was uploaded to YouTube on 5 December 2020. 10 Animations (and games) that made my life a little better
So for my first post I’d like to just share my appreciation for 10 animations I really felt a connection to, whether they were emotional, out of fascination or just pure amazement. I have no “rules” for what kind of animations they’re gonna be, aside from them being animated (Shocker I know).
So yeah, I hope yall enjoy this list, and leave a comment about some of the animations that left you with a smile on your face!
#1- Wall-e
I’m gonna start of this list with my favourite animated movie (or just movie in general): Wall-e. It’s no secret that Pixar makes great animations, and I know I’m not the only one who loves this movie. What really captures my attention is the feeling of soltitude and ambience shown throughout the first act of the movie, until Eve arrives. What I find great about this part is how much “show don’t tell” is used, to describe to us, the viewers, about the post-apocalyptic world.
Being that the main character almost never speaks, repeating alot of words or lines when he actually does, makes it super duper cool how the animators used visual storytelling to show us how the world has gone to shit, as well as Wall-e’s expressions and sounds to pinpoint exactly how he feels.
If you haven’t seen this movie, I highly reccomend it!

#2- Ori and the Blind Forest
For my second pick I chose one of my favourite games, name is in the title.For me, this game has everything: Awesome music, tight gameplay, a flubtastic story, and smooth animation. Playing this game really felt like going on a journey through a MAGICAL world, where anything could happen! Even though this game was the source of alot, and I mean ALOT, of ragequits, it still brought me back every time. The art in this game is fenomenal, and combined with the animation I really feel it when Ori, the game’s main character, flies through the world, up and down walls and through changing environments.
Also Managing those difficult jumps feels really satisfying!

#3- Death Parade
There are alot of animes out there (yes I’m a weeabo), but there’s a few that I’ve really enjoyed, Death parade is one of them. It’s opening might trick you to think you’re gonna watch a friendly, happy-go-lucky show about different people living in purgatory, but you couldn’t be more wrong. It’s dark themes and how it tackles different topics about human pshychology with a touch of humor and warmth really got to me. I felt a connection with the main character in a way I haven’t with any other characters in anime, and the realization about the main characters fate (no spoilers), really worked for me.
#4- Night in the Woods
I really love this game. I don’t know if it’s the overall great stylized aesthetics, the great, great music, the amount of clever, funny voicelines given to the characters, the characters themselves, showing multitudes of different personalities and charisma, the general story of the game, the oh-so-smooth animation or the underlying themes of friendship, anxiety and an existential crisis that grips me. I might have a clue though.
This game really delves into the greater questions about life in a really humorous and philosophical way, and i loved every step of the journey. It has really worked as an inspiration for me when it comes to creativity and life itself.
#5- Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse (trailer)
I’m just gonna throw this out here first to clearify: As of the date I wrote this list, the full movie wasn’t out, so I had just the trailer to go by.
Ok, I’m not gonna lie. The moment I saw the trailer for the spider-verse movie my mind. Was. Blown. The animation in this video is perfect. It’s the amazing mix between cycadelic cartoon meeting animation. The colors are vibrant, the animation is smooth as butter, and the textures really capture the comic-feel of everything. Along with me being a Spider-man fanboy I really love the whole concept of the spider-verse, and I can’t wait for this movie to come out
I hope Spider-pig is in it.
#6- Animator vs. Animation (the whole series)
If you watch alot of animations on youtube, you’re bound to come by one of these videos. Made by Alan Becker, Animator vs Animation is a series about an animator (You don’t say), who has to fight his own animated stickman. The genious about these videos is how it’s animated. The animator uses different tools in the animation program, as well as the computer and even phone, to really make it seem that he’s fighting with a virtual stickman. Getting better and better for each video, you can really see how different principles of animation are applied, to make for a really cool untraditional “stick-man fight”.
The series is pretty funny and shows you how creative and meta you can get with animation. Just don’t come to me if your pc is attacked by a small stickman.
#7- Angry Birds - Piggy Tales (The first two seasons)
NOW BEFORE YOU LEAVE THIS BLOG IN DISAPPOINTMENT AND ANGER, let me just say that there’s a special reason as to why I chose this, out of all things.
There was a period in my life where I was going through some rough things, and I spent a lot of time cooped up in the hospital. As I didn’t have a lot to do, phone games became my rescue, one of them being angry birds. I remember getting 3 stars on every stage (get on my level noobs), and having fun watching the different animations the creators of angrybirds made.
That being said, Piggy Tales is actually a funny short show, made on computer to resemble clay and stop-motion animation, making use of physical humor and slapstick. The animation is pretty smooth and funny, where different kinds of settings are explored each time.
Be aware though, as the third season shifts from clay-like animation to more refined animation. This might be off putting for those who found the clay-style appealing.
Piggy Tales are short but many, so if you wanna kill some time, this might be a good time-assassin.
#8- When Marnie was there
I had to include a Ghibli film here, I mean come on! Which one was the question though, but I was kinda allready set on one in particular. “When Marnie was there” is my favourite Ghibli film. I feel like it really connected with the movie in a weird beautiful way. The themes I saw and experienced throughout the movie, might not have been the same as the ones the writers and producers saw. opr me though, I felt like the movie really showed what it can feel like to be alone. Along with beautiful music and composition of scenery, the movie really grabbed me from the get-go and didn’t release me until the credits started rolling. What I was left with was a feeling of solitude, but at the same time I felt grateful for having friends and family, and for being part of this journey we call life.
Conclusion: Anime makes you feel feelings.
#9- Sly Cooper (trailer)
As with the Spider-verse, this is only a trailer, since the movie has been either cancelled or suspended for a long time.
The Sly Cooper games were the first games I ever played on a home console, so they have a big place in my nerd-soul. So when a movie was announced, I was well on my way to the cinnemas, even before the trailer was released. When I saw the trailer though, I was overwhelmed with just pure good-feels. The character-designs had changed to give them a more natural look, but it worked really well in my opinion.
As for the dialogue, the voiceactors were the same as the ones I grew up with, aside from the main character, Sly, but I let that slide since the new voice actor, Ian James Corlett pulled off Sly’s charcter pretty good! The animation of him jumping, sliding and running through the city also matched the way it felt playing the game, and doing those exact same actions.
If the movie ever comes out, I’ll be the first in line by any sacrifice necessary.
#10- Pooh’s Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin
To finish of this list I thought I’d share a piece of nostalgia! Though It’s been a long time since I last saw it, this movie was a big part of my childhood! Now don’t make fun of me for choosing a kids movie for this list, I still think this movie has a great story and music, along with the animation and background-paintings. Besides, making fun of me makes me sad, and I’m a big boy so I’m not supposed to cry.
This movie really excels at showing how vivid our imagination can be. Every scary location in the movie is shown at the end to be a reimagined version of reality, emphasizing just how much a kids imagination changes the world around them.
So yeah! Thanks for reading through my list of 10 animated things that really made for the raisin in the sausage (It’s a norwegian saying so don’t feel confused).

Please what do you use to animate and how do you animate? Please be detailed I'll read it all no matter how long, I really help ;-;)
OH UHMHELLOI’D LOVE TO HELPBut disclaimer: I’m merely an amateur beginning animator. And have been for like...4 years... I literally just started really getting into the swing of things a few days ago. I can offer you my unprofessional methods and how I do things but If you want any actual guided tips, I suggest asking my friend @lieutkennyThey’re a second year at SVA. So they have more technical experience than I do, and some things I tell you here might be the bane of all animator’s work ethic lmao.
My biggest advice is stop being lazy. To just jump into the frying pan. I never understood this when other artists said it, but now I do. Once you start animating your first thing and grasping basics, you really get a kick start on it. Things that took me like 2 hours to try and rough sketch before take me like 30 minutes or less to map out now
And those skills keep building the more you do!!!My second biggest advice is, if you’re not majoring in animation and already taking courses, watch videos. Get the information you need from sources. Don’t be lazy like me and try and wing it. Winging it is what makes the process 10 times longer and more unbearable. You’ll end up hating it lol. You’ll end up like me and animating 2 second gif once every 2 year s.For the life of me, I had no idea how to do a walk cycle without it looking terrible and awkward. So I looked up a video on youtube. This one is super helpful in breaking down a walk cycle to something way less intimidating than the results you’d find in google images and try to follow.As explained in the video, a basic walk cycle can be broken down from this jumbled mess
to firstContact
and SecondlyPassing
and then inebtween thoseDown pose (or recoil) after Contact
And Up Pose (high point) After passing!And then you essentially switch legs/arms for the sides.Or if you’re just practicing and doing the bare minimum, like I was, just do some erasing and redrawing for the legs and arms to show they’ve switched position rather than redraw the positions of them entirely.And there you have it; a basic walk cycle consisting of 8 frames (mine is at 8 fps)
Learning how to do a walk cycle will teach you some basics. Like the fact that even the most complicated cycles and animations can be broken down to just two key frames before you branch off to more. For Cycles, you go for the two poses that are the most distinct from each other. For an animated pose or gesture, you sketch the start and end first. And then after those, you sketch the position directly inbetween them. And once you have those three positions, the between frames are...usually custom depending on the artist and what they want to convey. I suggest looking up videos on timing, anticipation, etc. Or basically just watch something on the 12 principles of Animation. Alan Becker breaks them down into 12 3-5 minute videos, which is much easier to swallow than a 24 minute video on the matter. He has a condensed video of all of them together tho if that’s your style.
You gotta know where you’re going in order to get there. So when you want to animate something, figure out your start, and then your end. Draw those. And please god love yourself and don’t try starting out sketching detailed sketches. Start simple. Make it pretty later.
That’s all I can really offer you, from the mouth and hands of an amateur. You get a lot faster once you start learning the basics and cutting corners where it makes you comfortable. I guess start with walk cycles? That’s apparently the first thing they ask of you in class. Get real sick of em lmao. Pummel them until you can punch out a decent one in 30 minutes or less lol. It helps build confidence! Do different ones like slouches, peppy walks, or run cycles!Part 2 BoisProgramI use Clip Studio Executive. CSP ex is 220 bucks. But both CSP Pro and CSP Ex go on sale quite frequently!!! I bought Pro when it was like $15 bucks a few years ago, and I snagged a physical copy of Ex for 60 bucks when Smith Micro sold it off to Celsys and needed to get rid of their physical copies (it was 70% off at the time). But I digress;They’re both 50% off right now for the next 4 days if you guys are interested
You can only animate up to 25 frames in CSP Pro. But it’s good practice regardless. Ask your parents. Get commissions. Do what you gotta do. I personally really like csp because it’s basically?? An amalgam of Photoshop and Sai. It has the simplicity of Sai with most of the features Photoshop offers. So if PS is too complicated for you, I suggest that as a go to.That being said; I don’t know much about exploiting all of CSP’s features. I just know what I know. I’m a big “Wing It” kind of person lmao. So as far as animating in CSP goes, I suggest doing what I did and watching this very helpful video on the basics of doing so; It’s 24 minutes but- if I had to do it, so do you! I’m not very good at condensing that much info lol.Here’s what it looks like tho

Week 4 Summary
Animation Principles exercise
Once again, I did not work on my morph this week, but I did carry on with more principle research and this time focusing on three different principles. I came across a video on YouTube by Alan Becker which he goes over all the principles in depth, it was very informative and made it much easier for me to describe the principles which I was analysing with ease. One very important bit of information that I learned was about staging that it is not only used to show a character or the centre of attention but also can be used subtle as signals for the audience which helps conveys a character’s personality. I am very surprised that the out of the current tasks that I’m working on the principles research is the most entertaining as of now.
Narrative research
This week our tutor was ill, and we were told to watch Up and focus on identifying the 12 principles.
Animated sketchbook
As for the sketchbook we have been encouraged to draw as many live drawings as we possibly can from primary sources. This will be strange for me because this is a much messier sketchbook than ones I have previously done, I have always been taught to finish my drawings and make sure every page is neat but for this specific sketchbook we have told to keep it ‘messy’ with a lot of concept ideas and scribbles. It will definitely be interesting to see it when its complete. As an introduction we visited the Norwich Castle Museum which was great as we had a lot of wild animal references which would normally be difficult to come by. It was definitely a fun experience.
