01. what’s your name/alias you go by ??
my name is jeff !! lmfao (i don’t let memes die) it’s not my real name but i’ve gone by cody on tumblr for a long time
02. what’s your age ??
twenty. jfc i’m old. but also apparently a fetus??
03. what’s your zodiac sign ??
aries, which couldn’t feel further from correct lmfao
04. what’s your ethnicity ??
uhh mostly italian & sicilian, but you could probably point to any white place in europe and i’ll have a little bit of that in me. i’m also 1/16th native american but it’s such a small amount and sadly i don’t even know which tribe to learn more about them.
05. what’s your nationality ??
‘murican
06. what’s your favorite band and/or musical artist ??
i’m super indecisive about everything, so it’s difficult for me to pick faves (as you’ll see in a sec) but… mac miller,  post malone, johnny cash, eminem, tenacious d, colter wall, kehlani, bruno mars, snoop dogg, elvis presley, justin timberlake, sublime, the rolling stones, etc etc there’s probably a lot i’m forgetting tho. i like most types of music except country. well, modern country anyway.
07. what’s your dream job ??
uh, i don’t have one? i mean yeah, i’d love to be a writer, or game dev, or a narrative director on a game, or direct, write, or act in movies or television, but like…i could live without any of that stuff. i just want to make a decent living, be able to own a house, not completely hate my job. yknow, not a glamorous life but a good one.
08. what’s one place you would love to visit ??
idk there’s a lot of places i’d like to go, but i’d most like to visit alpha centauri, even tho that’ll never happen lol
09. what’s your favorite tv show ??
i can’t pick that! but i love a lot of shows. general hospital, lucifer, the 100, supernatural, stranger things, izombie, south park, legends of tomorrow, once upon a time, arrow (at times), dragon ball, big brother, riverdale, chilling adventures of sabrina, that 70′s show, the ranch, umm… i could probably keep listing forever.
10. what’s your favorite movie ??
hmmmm, again i’ve got a list but… joe dirt, the new guy, why him, the waterboy, 50 first dates, all the spider-man movies, thor ragnarok, man of steel, 21 jump street, 22 jump street ,and a fuckton more lol
11. what’s your favorite song ??
constantly in flux, but the current faves are — creep by radiohead, stay by post malone, no below by speedy ortiz, unshaken by d’angelo, cruel cruel world by willie nelson, wanksta by 50 cent, shooter by lil wayne & robin thicke, stressed out by 21 pilots, self care by mac miller (along with practically everything on his final album), and i will always, un-ironically love only in america by riff raff. he’s not the greatest ever but that song is hilarious and always puts me in a good mood.
12. what’s your favorite sport ??
can i say rocket league? lol
13. what’s your favorite food ??
pizza, unquestionably. cereal is a damn close second tho. or pot stickers. damn, i’m hungry…
14. what’s your favorite face claim to use ??
typically, i’ve always really liked using paul wesley, chris wood, and matt daddario. i’m using lindsey morgan for the first time now though, and i really like her as an fc too.
15. what’s your least favorite face claim ??
to use?? um pretty much any singer or model just bc their resources aren’t too great. i really didn’t enjoy using pete davidson as much as i thought i would, either lol
to see… uh probs emma roberts or andy biersack. emma for obvs reasons but also bc i once had a really bad experience with people using those fcs. idm people using whoever they feel like using tho.
16. what’s your favorite character of yours to play ?? which do you think you’re most like ??
oh man, uhh i really enjoy writing chrissy & theo. they both speak to me. but tbh i’m not much like any of my characters? i’m boring af so i tend not to make any like me lol. i am kinda like theo in the sense that i’m quiet, and really just try to be a good person. other than that i’m most like jason solely based on the fact we’re both human lol
17. what’s your sexuality ??
danversexual. attracted only to fictional danvers women, examples including carol, kara, and alex danvers.
lmfao but nah i’m just a boring straight boy. well, like 99.9% straight. jensen ackles makes me question shit.
18. what’s the last movie you saw in a cinema/theater ??
captain marvel (thanks to dani lol). only two months late but it was worth the experience haha.
19. what’s the worst injury you’ve ever had ??
thankfully i’ve never really hurt myself too terribly except for a broken wrist, but between the ages of 10-17 i’d occasionally hurt my back by sitting weird, usually in an attempt to play video games without the glasses i desperately needed lol. once when i was like 11 i laid belly down on the couch with my elbows up on the arm of it for like three hours, which messed me up for days, then a few other times i hurt myself, but another bad one when i was 17, i had my back curved while sitting and propping my laptop up on my knee, tried to move and literally just cried, crawled on the floor, and laid there all night until i forced myself to move in the morning. lol luckily it hasn’t happened since i lost a little weight.
20. what’s a random or interesting fact about you ??
uhm, nothing? i literally can’t think of one, i’m dull af. i uh.. i replaced my own cpu cooler once? lmfao
21. do you listen to music while you write ??
sometimes. a lot of time i just like the silence or ambient background noise, but if i’ve got a fitting playlist for the vibe of what i’m trying to write, i’ll use it!
22. are you a morning, day, evening, or night writer ??
i’m a never writer, apparently v___v but lol ideally a night writer, my best work is between the hours of 12am & 4am, but my sleeping schedule is so inconsistent, and so is my dad’s who spends literally every waking moment of his telling me different stuff he wants done, so it’s tough to hit that sweet spot. i write whenever i get a chance tho.
23. have you ever roleplayed intoxicated ??
lol nah i’ve never even had a drink. like what teenager doesn’t have a drink at some point?? i told you i’m lame.
24. what language or languages do you speak ??
english, barely. and assassin’s creed 2 taught me some italian swears. and ac: odyssey has had me occasionally dropping “malaka” bombs since the day i first played it haha.
25. how long have you roleplayed ??
officially, about 9 years. i started at 11 on myspace, rping dragon ball z stuff. but basically about 12 years, if you count how from the ages of 8-11 i’d put an anime pic up on my myspace, pretend i was older, and talk to roleplayers i didn’t realize were roleplayers lmfao.
26. favorite roleplay genre ??
i like pretty much anything, tbh. as long as it’s well thought out, has an interesting plot, or whatever. sometimes it doesn’t even need that, it just needs to catch my eye or line up with something i’m looking for. but yeah, supernatural, multi-fandom, sci-fi, romance, town rps, high school/college rps, anime rp (well, pokemon mostly), harry potter… i’ve done it all tbh and don’t particularly have a favorite.
27. one sound you hate & one you love ??
the sound of cotton stretching is the absolute worst thing to me. or scratching cotton. idk, it just sends chills up and down my spine and makes my hands feel weak lmfao. i’m weird. i really love the sound of rain, or fire crackling, or like “ambient” harp or ukulele music.
28. do you believe in ghosts ??
short answer, yes. long answer… i’m pretty sure i was friends with a ghost girl as a kid?? like no joke, even looking back at it through rational “adult” eyes, i’m still convinced. my fam moved into a new apartment, and pretty much right after that i started having dreams about a girl my age at the time (11-12). i’d never seen her before but the dreams would be like just conversations, like i was visiting a friend or something. i don’t remember them much, but i do remember the feeling of someone else in my room all the time, like you know how if someone else is around you just know even if you’re not looking at them? like that. there was even one night i was getting in bed, laid there a minute, and then i could have absolutely sworn somebody came in the room and sat down next to me on the bed because i felt the bed sink a little under their weight, but i looked and no one was there. i had a really vivid conversation/dream/thing that night. then a few nights later, for the first time since moving there i didn’t have one. the next morning my dad was really freaked out and said he fell asleep in the chair, but woke up and couldn’t breathe, and felt cold little hands over his mouth. he rationalized it as just waking up from a nightmare but i didn’t think so, so that night when i went to sleep and saw her i got really upset, yelled at her for it, and woke up right after. then i never saw or heard anything even remotely similar again, like she left or disappeared or something. it’s so weird, and i know how crazy it sounds, but yeah. don’t get me started on the topic of ghosts lmfao. THEN AGAIN, like a year later we had a carbon monoxide scare, but i really doubt the two were related because that would mean there was an entire year that we were breathing it in and the monitor didn’t do anything lol
29. do you believe in aliens ??
no alien story, thankfully, but it just makes no sense not to believe in them to me. like, we probably don’t have them on earth, and we’ve probably never encountered any, but it’s as close as you can get to a mathematical certainty that there’s some other life out there in the universe.
30. do you believe in true love ??
like, people who are just meant for each other, like romantic soulmates? nah not really. but i believe that two people can grow to truly love one another. whether it’s based off an initial attraction/infatuation, or a friendship, or both. i’d actually argue that’s a simple explanation of the biological science behind the feeling of love, but that’s an essay i’m not gonna write lol. but there’s apparently a lot of different types of love, so i guess “true love” is suggestive?
also slightly unrelated but i don’t-quite-believe-in-but-am-open-to-the-idea-of soulmates, not necessarily as two souls who are just meant for each other romantically and always end up together, but more as two or more souls that gravitate toward each other to make up the important people in each other’s lives, like family members, lovers, or close friends. but that’s more of a theoretical idea/possibility than an actual belief of mine.
31. do you hold grudges ??
um, yes. lol i try not to, and i really do want everyone to be their best/happiest selves, but some people man… some people can take a long walk off a short pier lmao
32. do you have any obsessions right now ??
PO KE MON GOTTA CATCH EM ALLLLL. also… life is strange (thanks dani lol). supernatural. stranger things (thanks dani & steph) the 100 / clexa / becho  (thanks steph). lucifer. captain marvel (thanks dani). the song “creep” by radiohead and all its covers (tom ellis, haley reinhart, etc). cyberpunk 2077 (thanks dani). as you can see, i’m easily influenced lmfao.
33. do you drive & if so, have you ever been in a crash ??
nope i don’t drive, precisely because i’d definitely end up in a crash lol
34. do you like the smell of gasoline ??
uh that’s a big fat no from me, chief
35. do you prefer writing fluff, angst, or smut ??
i like it all equally, i think. i just really like writing & rp in general. i did run a smut rp once in the past tho. it gets old quick tbh and is the one of the three i can live without lol
36. are you in a relationship ??
bahahahahahahaha no.
37. grab the nearest book to you and turn to page 23, what is the 17the line ??
❝  “and why would that be?” kronos’s golden eyes glittered.  ❞
— the last olympian by rick riordan.
38. put your playlist on shuffle and list the first four songs that pop up:
1. season of the witch – donovan 2. riot van – arctic monkeys 3. busta rhymes – qveen herby 4. der kommissar – after the fire
also i gotta cheat because it’s too perfect that the next two are
5. stay – mac miller (one of my favorites ever that i forgot to mention above) 6. only in america – riff raff (i just love this ok. the video is hilarious but tw james franco for those that don’t like him)

i will never stop filling out character questions
1. Which should be saved – a bus full of innocent lives or a loved one?
Loved one first. Theo doesn’t have many of those left, and he wants to protect innocent lives, but the people closest to him will always be his priority.
2. You meet a man who has killed someone and done time for it before. Does this factor into how you treat him? Will he ever truly escape that sin?
Context is important here. If it’s an accident or it was to protect somebody else, I think Theo could eventually look past it. If it was on purpose, to shut somebody up, etc etc literal murder, Theo would never be able to get past that.
3. If you could jump back through time to save a loved one’s life, would you? Despite what it might to do the timeline? To everyone else? Do you believe it is their fate to die regardless?
Theo would save any of his loved ones if given the chance. The fact that he couldn’t save them all fast enough, and didn’t have the strength to do it until very late in their enslavement is something he still feels guilty about.
4. You have a secret you swore not to reveal. But this secret is the only thing that would prove your innocence in a separate matter. Is it worth risking your own well-being for the secret? Or would you betray the trust given to you?
I think it 100% depends on whose secret. If Theo is only cordial with somebody, or just barely knows them in general, I think he’d be willing to trade the secret for his life. If it’s somebody he deeply cares about or is close to, he’d be more tight-lipped.
5. Is it better to hurt others before they hurt you or let yourself be walked all over and hurt by others?
I think Theo is definitely in the camp of the former lately, he’s very distrusting and he’d sooner lash out than let himself be betrayed.
6. If you tell the truth, an evil person gets to walk away free. If you lie, you may be able to send them away like they deserve. Is honesty worth more than justice?
Lmao no Theo’s got a particular moral compass but he’s not letting people who do bad shit get away with dick.
7. You have the key to immortality in your hands. But not for free. If you want it, as a price, your worst enemy also gains immortality. Is it worth it?
Theo hates being alive too much to take that, not if he can’t make a few people he cares about immortal on top of that. His worst enemy is already an immortal lich so it’s no skin off his nose really, but he’d hate being alive and alone.
8. If you could gain as much money as you want for losing a sense, would you do it?
Money isn’t something super important to Theo, I don’t think he’d give it up. His body is already very physically weak and atrophied from his time with Jericho, he can’t afford to give anything else up.
9. Can people be held accountable for things people close or related to them did or are they innocent?
Depends. Were they aware of it and allowed it to happen? Were they coerced into keeping out of it? Did they genuinely just not know? Context is very important for Theo to pass judgement. If somebody was aware and jsut stayed out, he’d call them accountable. If they were forced or genuinely didn’t know, he couldn’t fault them necessarily.
10. If a lot of people, possibly innocent people, have to die in order to make a real change, is it worth it? Can you live with their deaths even if it helps people in the present?
I think Theo would have a hard time with that. If a lot of people have to die to overthrow an oppressive regime, that’s the sacrifice you have to make, but he’d feel a lot of guilt.
11. Imagine there is a beast that craves attention. If you ignore it, despite being deadly, it will leave you alone. Could you live like that? Even if it possibly attacked others? Would you try and challenge something that unknown?
I mean. The beast is his personality disorder like this describes bpd a lot so. Theo would just internalize it and take it on himself.
12. If someone else stole something and you stole it back is that a good deed, a bad deed or one of equal worth? Are you better than the original thief?
Theo would call it a good deed. You’re righting a wrong that’s been done.
13. Could you sacrifice yourself for the good of everyone else?
Theo has an awful martyr complex so yeah
14. What of love? Say you discover your lifelong crush on another has finally been reciprocated… but they are currently dating a family member or a dear friend the crush feels responsible to honor. Do you force the break up? Date on the side? Bottle it up forever?
Theo would tell the person if they do care for him, they’d make a decision and not string him along. Him or them. If it’s them, he’d bottle it up and try to get rid of it quickly.
15. Is lying to others to gain their approval more important than being genuine and hated?
Nah.
16. Have you ever contemplated killing someone? Who and why? Would you ever act on it? Are you frightened you might?
Theo spent a lot of time thinking about killing Jericho, for obvious reasons. He did act on it, and eventually it paid off.
17. Have you ever gotten sheer joy out of hurting someone else, either physically or mentally? To whom and why? Did it scare you?
I don’t know if Theo’s been given the opportunity to be this nasty yet? He definitely doesn’t enjoy hurting people. He did set the party paladin’s dress on fire for a moment, and he did it because she was attacking his fiancee, and it def didn’t scare him, but it wasn’t like. He wanted her to suffer and keel over or something. In general he definitely doesn’t take joy in hurting others, and he tends to punish himself if it happens on accident.
18. Have you ever done something morally wrong? If it’s morally wrong do you regret it?
Theo’s a morally grey character to begin with, so. Probably numerous things.
19. What is more likely a thought to you – that this world is wrong or that you are wrong?
The world is wrong.
20. Are there people in this world who, no matter how much time and penitence is given, should never be forgiven?
Absolutely.
21. Are there people in this world you simply think the world would be better without? If you could erase them out of existence without physically murdering them, would you?
Absolutely.
22. How do you feel about having an intimate relationship with someone you don’t love? What if they love you in return? Does that make you feel guilty?
Theo’s already had to do this, and he feels no amount of guilt. He got what he deserved.
23. Could you ever become your own hero? Is that a role you can fulfil or is it something you look to others for?
lmao no Theo hates himself too much
24. How do you feel about tears? Are they cowardly and weak? Do you cry? Would you consider that shameful?
Theo cries pretty openly? He hates doing it but it’s almost physically impossible for him to hold them in now.
25. What is more important to you? An idea of yours being used and appreciated or the credit for that idea beings yours and yours alone?
I think an idea being used
26. Is your personal happiness more important than anything else in the world? Than fame? Than the happiness of others?
Yes and no. Theo values the happiness of people close to him, but he also knows he has to protect his own happiness, because he doesn’t get to feel happy very often. He hasn’t been able to in a long time, so he’ll do anything to preserve what little he gets.
27. How far would you go to achieve a dream or ideal? Does it matter who suffers? Does it matter if you suffer?
Theo would go very far, and he’d definitely step over other people to do it; he feels no guilt there. He’ll suffer, others will suffer, as long as he get what he wants.
28. How long would you wait for the one you love? A year? Fifteen years? Forever? Could you honestly be loyal to an unfulfilled love?
Theo waited 110.
29. Is genius equal to hard work? Does a genius deserve praise for doing well without effort? Are they above us?
Natural brilliance is commendable, but Theo very much admires people who work themselves up from nothing.
30. Do we live in a world of parallels? Can there be no hope without grief? No happiness without suffering? Or is a utopia possible?
No. Theo believes that people are too cruel overall. He can try to make his own piece of utopia, but he always knows something will take that away eventually.
31. What is more important to you? Being respected and praised by your elders or being looked up to and championed by those younger or of the same age?
Theo doesn’t give a fuck about elders anymore. If younger people look up to him though, that’s something that makes him feel good.
32. If you could choose to remove certain feelings such as anger, confusion, sadness, would you remove them?
Theo would remove these feelings from himself in a heartbeat. He has a lot of that built up in his body and he just wants to be a functional person again.
33. If you could wipe certain memories from your head, would you? Why would you? What memories?
Theo would wipe all of the traumas of Jericho from his mind. He feels that he’s a completely changed person because of it, and that he’s a worse person because of it. If he believed he could be more pleasant and happy, he’d do it.
34. What path appeals to you more? An exciting dream that leaves you possibly penniless and alone or a drab existence where you have steady success.
A drab but steady existence is all Theo craves.
35. Is every person in this world wholly unique or can they be categorized? Can they be grouped and mentally dissected? Are you just another sheep in another flock or are you the sole unique soul?
People can definitely be categorized. Everybody is different, but they all fall into their own groups and labels that will determine a lot of their thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors.

[Pause: Currently] What style is your hair in?
It’s starting to become really hot in the afternoon so I’ve put it in a ponytail.
What’re you wearing?
My outfit yesterday, a turtleneck and shorts. I’m too lazy to change.
What’s the weather like outside?
No wind, just sun. It’s making me miserable. GIVE ME RAIN.
What time is it?
2:23 PM as of this typing.
Who, if anyone, is in the room with you?
I’m alone right now. Not my choice, but that’s what I’m stuck with.
What’s on your mind?
That I have a midterm on Tuesday and should really get to studying now lol
What make-up, if any, are you wearing?
I’ve stopped wearing makeup regularly. Come to think of it, I only really got into makeup because I wanted to look pretty in front of my ex…then I was able to ask her out again and eventually got too lazy to put in effort to use makeup anymore.
What month is it?
It’s March! …and getting so much closer to the end of the semester. I’m excited.
[Fast Forward: Future] What career do you want?
I want something that wouldn’t give me the draining feeling I’ve been getting in school for a while now. I don’t want a prison, that’s all.
What age do you think you’ll get married by?
I always wanted to get married by the time I reach my late 20’s. I don’t know about that now, though.
What about having kids?
Still around the same age, ideally. But then again I also always want my money to myself and be able to travel, be independent, and not keep a close eye on a kid 24/7, so I’m a little torn.
What age do you plan on moving out?
21-22.
Can you see yourself moving away from here and if so, to where?
Yeah, I’m not completely ignoring a move to another country. It’s possible. But I don’t mind ending up still in the Philippines, albeit in a different city. In the end all I want, honestly, is to cut off ties with my mother.
Do you think you’ll marry your current significant other?
It’s ridiculously early to ask…for now I’m the one entirely okay about marriage; excited about the idea, even. My girlfriend is rather closed off to it. But I do think it’s way too early to bring up a conversation like that and I’m not going to be sitting her down to talk about it any time soon.
Do you know what the weather is supposed to be like for the rest of the week?
Not specifically, but I know it’s only going to be warmer from here.
What tattoos and/or piercings do you want in the future?
I wanted so many tattoos. I wanted to put on my thigh, ankle, wrist, at the back of my neck, my fingers, etc. until watching my mom get tattooed totally destroyed that goal of mine. I turn into a wuss at the general concept of anything piercing my body, so I had to say goodbye to piercings too :c I wanted to get a lip ring so bad.
Do you want any cosmetic surgery sometime down the line, if you had money for it?
No. Imagine all the pizza I can buy instead.
In ten years, how old will you be and where do you see yourself?
I’ll be 29 and Gab and I have a lovely little place to call home. We’ll also have a golden retriever we’ve named Theo and hopefully I’m so much happier with life by then.
[Rewind: Past] When’s the last time you took a shower?
Yesterday.
What was the last text message you sent?
"I miss you"
What did you do yesterday?
I went to my one class for Friday running on two hours of sleep because I worked nearly all night for a news report project that I soon found out wasn’t needed until next week, so that fucking bummed me out. I drove to Gabie’s early so I could sleep in my car, then I drove her home where I stayed for a bit. We played games on each other’s phone till the sun set, then decided we wanted to watch a movie. I eventually realized we weren’t going to end up watching anything because we were only critiquing EACH AND EVERY FILM that we skimmed through on her hard drive like the film nerds that we are. We’re pretty great.
How old were you when you first started dating?
I was 16.
When was the last time you saw your best friend?
I saw Gab yesterday, and Angela I last saw about three weeks ago, at a friend’s debut.
What was your first word?
No clue. My parents didn’t care enough to track it.
What’s your earliest memory?
When I was three, my parents set up a kid’s tent in mine and my sister’s room to do pretend camping. That’s my earliest one and can’t remember anything before that.
Do you remember what you were doing twelve hours ago?
Passed out in bed. That was 3:04 AM.
Three years ago, did you dress the same way you do now?
Not really, but it’s not drastically different from what I wear today. 2014 I was obsessed with Audrey Hepburn, so all I ever wore out were little black dresses, summer dresses, skirts, flats, etc. Right now I can’t say my style is super defined because I would wear anything, as long as they match and make me look cute ha.
How old were you when your first younger sibling was born, assuming you’re not the youngest or an only child?
I was two.
[Eject: Stuff You Wish Didn’t Happen] How did your first serious breakup go?
A mess. I was so mad and was even made madder by the fact that she didn’t seem to be the least bit sorry for what happened at first. There was zero interaction made up for with endless subtweeting, and it was just silent rage all around. I wrote her a letter some time after expressing everything that was in my heart and head and that seemed to slap all the sense right back to her. We are now dating again though so it’s all goodski HAHAHA
TW// Have you ever had an eating disorder?
Nope.
TW// Have you ever cut yourself?
I have, yeah.
TW// Have you ever thought about or attempted suicide?
Yes, and yes.
What was the last thing you cried about?
I get triggered by the smallest things, so when I was asked to run errands in a very rushed manner this morning, I comletely lost it and had a good cry in the car.
What’s one thing that’s stressing you out like crazy right now? All the requirements being asked of me by all my classes.
Have you ever had a horrible teacher and/or boss?
It couldn’t get any worse than my history prof last semester.
The first time you dumped someone, was it hard?
I’ve never dumped anybody.
[Record: Awesomeness That Deserves to be Recorded on Video Forever] When was the last time you laughed really hard and what was it about?
Yesterday morning! Gab and I were having breakfast at Jollibee when I started playing with the filters on her Snapchat. We got to the face swapping option and quickly filled the area with our noise because we were laughing sooooo fucking much.
What was the last funny movie you saw?
No clue. I haven’t seen anything new in months.
The last time you ate something really delicious, what was it?
A goddamn plate of risotto. IT NEVER FAILS
The last time you got your paycheck, how much was it and were you satisfied with it?
None of that just yet. Hopefully soon!!!
How exactly did you and your best friend meet?
Gab in 7th grade, Angela in the 1st.
What was the last compliment you received?
I was told I smelled nice.
What’s one thing you wish you could relive just for one day? I wish I could replay the night I went to my WWE show, but with better eyeglasses because I saw dirt shit that night.
[Play: From This Moment On] Now that you’re done, what will you do?
Maybe look for something to eat. Then take another survey.
What’s on your agenda for today?
Surveys surveys surveys then hopefully get the drive to start studying for my soc sci midterm.
What’s your next meal going to be? I’m not sure. I’m craving for pasta though ;(
Will you change your clothes later in the day?
Maybe change out of this annoying uncomfortable turtleneck, yeah.
Who do you plan on seeing today?
My dog.
Are you going to take another survey afterwards?
Maybe.
Is the weather supposed to stay this way all day or will it change?
Yup. The sun never goes away here, unfortunately.
Do you have any chores you need to do?
I did all of them this morning.
Do you have work later in the day?
Hahahayeahdon'tremindmeplzsurveysaresupposedtobemtgreatescapefromthingsplzplzplz.
What about any homework to do?
SAME THING

Charlotte Peters in Caste rehearsal – Photo by Greg Goodale
In a new production commissioned by the Finborough Theatre to mark the 150th anniversary of T. W. Robertson’s 1867 comedy – and the first UK production in over 20 years – Directed by Charlotte Peters, Caste plays at the Finborough Theatre for nine Sunday and Monday evenings and Tuesday matinees from Sunday, 2nd April 2017.
Director Charlotte Peters recently took time out to chat about the production.
Q: An anniversary is a fair reason for a new production – but why this one and why now? Charlotte: Very few Victorian dramas and comedies survived the test of time. Despite Robertson being one of the founders of naturalism in theatre and one of the first ‘directors’ in terms of how we perceive the role today, his plays seemed to get lost over the years. Being such a fan of the play, it’s rather surprising to me that this is the first London production of Caste for decades. The 150th anniversary seemed a great reason for reviving this forgotten classic, but more than that, this seems the perfect time to bring to life a piece that at its essence is about reminding its audience that we’re all the same. The play may use class as its subject, but it feels rather apt that such a message should be celebrated just at the moment. Besides, with everything that’s been happening in the world of late, we could probably all do with a giggle and Robertson certainly knows his comedy!
Q: As the Director, what challenges do you face to make this production feel fresh? Charlotte: The brilliant thing about comedy is that it’s timeless so we’re fortunate that most of Robertson’s wonderful observations about people still exist today. That said, if one was reading the play they may find the language dated so we’ve been keen to introduce the style early on and slightly contemporise its meaning in places, and also to use the language to add to the comedy of the production. Whilst we have stayed very true to Robertson’s stage directions (he was certainly specific!), we’ve given the production a fresh edge by setting it within a Victorian photographer’s studio. In the mid to late 19th century, photography was starting to grow in popularity, and in an age where how you are perceived was vital, it felt interesting and rather fun to explore what would happen if every vulnerable moment was caught on camera.
Q: How do you ensure that the piece is seen to be authentic? Charlotte: Caste was first performed in 1867, but it is set in 1856, a year before the Indian Rebellion as two of our characters go off to defend the Empire. Despite many of the themes within Caste being timeless, it is set within an age that focused on morality, where the class system was starting to change to make room for the middle classes rising up from the Industrial Revolution, and where romanticism was spreading throughout Europe. We’ve wanted to keep hold of that setting as it’s crucial for the stakes of the play and so all costumes and props sit very much within the period. The language too, assists in the authenticity of the piece, paying homage to Old England, whilst remaining clear for a contemporary audience.
Q: What can you tell us about rehearsals and working with the cast? Charlotte: I feel like the last few weeks have mainly been spent laughing although I’m sure we got some work done too! It has been an absolute joy to share ideas and direct such a wonderful bunch of actors whilst re-discovering a brilliant comedy. I feel incredibly lucky to be working with such a brilliant cast who between them have worked for some of the most prolific theatre companies in the UK and brilliant television and film. It means Caste’s creation has truly been a collaboration of minds, greatly helped too by a fantastic creative, stage management and production team.
Q: Do you have a favourite character? (and/or a favourite line) Charlotte: My favourite character seems to change every rehearsal as they’re all so full of heart! I have started using “Confound it!” in daily life wherever possible as it’s such a brilliant exclamation – I hope to bring it back to 21st-Century vocabulary so spread the word!
Q: What is at the heart of the production? Charlotte: There’s a brilliant line in Caste: “Nobody’s a mistake. He don’t exist. Nobody’s nobody. Everybody’s somebody.” and I think that just about sums up the play. Hidden within this comedy of class prejudices is the idea that actually, we’re all the same. Caste celebrates that we may think there are fundamental differences between us and those who grew up in a completely different way to us, but fundamentally, we all want to love and to be loved. It may be a Victorian comedy, but it seems to me that never has such a simple idea seemed more important to remind ourselves of, than right now.

Q: What emotions do you go through on Opening Nights? Charlotte: I think I probably go through every emotion! Opening Night is about relinquishing control of something you’ve held very dear and looked after for weeks or months and so whilst it’s a very freeing experience, it can be nerve wracking too! Mostly it’s a chance to see the cast bring to life the ideas thrown about in a rehearsal room and that can be exhilarating and rather magical.
Q: Why should everyone get along to see Caste? Charlotte: If you feel that you’ve not had much to celebrate of late in terms the ever more depressing daily news that we wake up to, Caste promises to provide 90 minutes of comedic light relief whilst being full of truth. It’s an opportunity to see a wonderful collection of actors revive a brilliant piece that certainly deserves to be enjoyed by audiences for many generations to come.

1867. George D’Alroy is a soldier and the son of French nobility. Esther Eccles is a beautiful ballet dancer from a poor family. When the two fall in love, two very different families are brought together.
After George leaves to serve in India, Esther must deal with a drunken father, a sister with a fierce temper and a terrifying mother in law. Not knowing whether she will ever see her love again, Esther must confront the class prejudices of Victorian England, whilst coping with the chaos created by her increasingly exasperating family members…
Widely considered both as T. W. Robertson’s masterpiece and a ground-breaking milestone in British theatre, Caste was described by George Bernard Shaw as “epoch-making”, whilst W. S. Gilbert said it “pointed the way for a whole new movement”, and when William Archer and Harley Granville Barker planned the programme for their proposed National Theatre, they were agreed that the mid-Victorian period should be “inevitably represented by its one masterpiece, Caste.”
Playwright T.W. Robertson (1829-1871) was a theatrical revolutionary. His works include Society (1865), Ours (1866) which was revived at the Finborough Theatre in 2007 for the first time in over a century, Play (1868), Progress (1869), School (1869), Birth (1870), M.P. (1870) and War (1871). Robertson was the first playwright to treat contemporary British subjects in realistic settings, and also directed his own work. Many of his most successful works were produced for the management team of Squire Bancroft and his wife Marie – buried just minutes from the Finborough Theatre in Brompton Cemetery – who were instrumental in creating the West End theatre that we know today with their innovations in the fields of stage design, theatre decoration, ensemble acting and long runs of single plays, with matinee performances.
Robertson was a huge influence on later theatre makers including Arthur Pinero, who based the character of Tom Wrench in Trelawny of the ‘Wells’ on Robertson; and W.S. Gilbert, who said that “I look upon stage management [i.e. theatre direction], as now understood, as having been absolutely invented by him.”
