Severance Comforting x Reader Headcanons!

I got literally four separate requests in my inbox asking for comfort with Severance characters...y'all okay? Jk I know we're all not lol, especially after the last few episodes. The requests specifically mentioned Mark, Cobel, Helly, and Milchick, but I'm going to include a few others as well! Hope you enjoy and feel properly comforted!

Mark S

Somehow Mark always knows what to say and do to make you feel better, even if he thinks he doesn't know how

He picks up on your little unconscious signals that you're getting stressed or anxious, sometimes even faster than you do

He'll take you for a walk around the halls, donate one of his tokens to you for a vending machine snack, or simply give your hand a squeeze under the desk

There's also something about his eyes, and the way he looks at you so compassionately

He'll tell you how great you're doing, and how much he enjoys working with you

Helly R

I'm going to be honest here, I don't think comforting is necessarily Helly's strong suit. We saw how she brushed off Dylan's sadness about his wife leaving. So I don't think she's particularly sympathetic to woes concerning anything outie-related, at least

BUT, hear me out, I do think she'd really try to be comforting, especially with someone she's really committed to caring about

I think she'd be fantastic at pep talks if you're feeling down, she'd really enjoy getting you fired up and reminding you of your worth

She knows more than anyone how it feels to have no control, basically being the plaything of rich and powerful people. She would want to be sure you never feel that way

Irving B

Irving is probably the one who needs to be comforted let's be real, but I think he would be good at returning the favor too

He has a very calming presence, and I think he could use that to help you without much trying or effort

Maybe he takes you to look at paintings together, discussing them until you've forgotten your worries

In early season one events, he'd probably try to comfort you by reciting Kier history or the tempers. Whether or not that would help is up to you haha

Dylan G

Comfort king. I just know he knows what to do

First of all, he has trinkets galore to gift to you and distract you from your problems with. He'll insist you take a break from your computer for a bit to fiddle around with finger traps and ground yourself

He loves hugs! He absolutely would hug you as often and as long as you need, if physical comfort helps you!

He's also the funniest in MDR, possibly on the whole severed floor, so he would definitely use humor and jokes to comfort you as well

Harmony Cobel

Another character who probably needs just as much comfort back as she would give, now knowing what she's been through

Cobel is a bit--well, maybe a lot--emotionally stunted. That's what Lumon brainwashing does to you. But surprisingly, I think she'd actually be pretty good at comforting. She understands pain and how deep hurt feels

Whether you meet her on the inside or the outside, she might come across colder and harsher, but deep down she does care

I think her true self lies somewhere between her two personas as Cobel and Selvig. I don't think Selvig's kindness was all an act, and I certainly think her kindness from that side would come out frequently with you

Seth Milchick

Please comfort this man too, goodness gracious haha

I genuinely think Milchick has a lot of compassion within him. If he didn't he wouldn't have tried his best to make life better for the innies, ya know? He's not usually malicious, just a little Lumon-crazy lol

That being said, he would try his hardest to comfort you if you need it. Whether or not it works, he would at least try

Similar to Irving in the early show, he would probably read stories and history of Kier in an attempt to comfort you

I could also seem him enjoying hugs, even though we've never seen him give physical affection in the show. I think he's probably pretty touched starved, like this man works nearly 24/7, you really think he has time for loving friendships and relationships? So if you tell him a hug would comfort you, he will not hesitate to give it to you

Miss Casey

Miss Casey's version of comfort can be a bit strange and off-putting, and she knows it, but she still tries

If the wellness session doesn't seem to be comforting you, she'd try other methods if she can get away with it. She'd gladly risk another trip to the break room if it meant actually helping you

If her every move wasn't being watched though, you best believe she would be the comfort queen. She's so soothing and calm, and she would do her best to transfer some peace to yo

Bonus: Lorne

I know we only got one scene in one episode with her but I love her okay!!

Lorne can be very intense, but she is fiercely protective and passionate as well, traits which would definitely translate to her comforting skills

If you were ever sad or stressed about anything, she would do everything in her power to make you feel better. She doesn't mess around

She would probably like physical affection as well, assuming neither of you mind how dirty you get in the Mammalians Nurturable department. After working there a while, you probably barely notice the smell of goats anymore anyway

Yeah, seriously, I don't get how no one (besides Irving, maybe) cares about Helly being Helena Eagan?! Like, I would have freaked out if I found out my friend is an appendage of the oppressing entity I am desperately trying to escape! Heck, I don't get how innie Mark wasn't massively freaked out when he found out about Helena. None of their reactions made sense, tbh.

I found out who Helena is and I just can't look at Helly the same way either. It makes me sad bc she was so pivotal in season 1 but in s2, I guess my connection to her was severed (pun not intended). It feels like a big deal that she is basically one of them. Yet the characters are totally fine with it, it's wild in my mind!

sorry this was buried in my inbox i meant to get around to this but!! i do think the second part of your ask is so interesting because from my pool of friends who i've gotten to watch severance, many of them had the exact same reaction which is so surprising to me!! like they're completely turned off by helly/helena because they don't see the innies and the outies as different people, which i did say at one point was my take on it too... not to parrot the premise of the show but to me, the innies and outies are the same people without their memories.

for me the question really is should we be accountable for things we did even if we had no memory of it (up to you to decide, not sure if the show even has an answer for this) and also how our memories/experiences shape us. which is why i think the reintegrated mark will be neither omark or imark, although i'm conflicted about it because despite the whole argument that outies are not more important than innies, at the end of the day it feels very reductive to say that omark's experiences do not ultimately have a huge impact on the final version of reintegrated mark (it's even brought up when imark says the final version would be more of omark than him). sorry that was a hugeee tangent (but i think i answered the bulk of your question in a previous ask so i'm really just using this as an opportunity to yap).

there is probably a more eloquent way of phrasing this and it is probably an extremely hot take so please take this in the best faith possible (please). i think the tragedy of hellyna isn't that helly is what helena would've been if she hadn't grown up as an eagan. i think (and this could be supremely off-kilter idk) that ultimately helena is what helly would always become. now... this mostly comes from me placing more weight on the nature part of the nature vs nurture argument, but who knows... also this is not me rooting for some helly turning evil arc either it's just me theorising and probably spending too much time thinking about the hellyna of it all... sent in invisible ink etc etc please don't yell at me...

the brothers have devolved into another one of their fights, and it’s really stressing you out. exam week is right around the corner, so tensions are running high, and their poor attitudes is helping no one

“can’t you just shut up?” belphie groans, interrupting levi, who’s excitedly describing his new game. to who, you’re not sure, but belphie’s harsh words make you look over.

“what?” levi asks, frowning.

“just- be quiet for once, you know? some of us are trying to sleep here.”

this makes levi scowl. “if you wanted to sleep, you should be in your room. not down here. and anyway, you didn’t seem to have a problem with beel’s long-ass explanation of the restaurant he went to last week.”

“hey,” beel says, “don’t bring me into this.”

“oh, levi.” belphie’s tone is acidic. “always diverting whenever someone criticizes you. you really are just a pathetic otaku.”

“guys,” asmo tries futilely. “can we like, not?”

“stay out of this, asmo,” levi snaps. “you’re always putting your nose where it doesn’t belong.”

their voices are loud, and the room’s acoustics are making them magnified to an even higher level. you’re just as tired and stressed as they are, and you’re about at the end of your rope.

“don’t talk to asmo like that!” satan interjects, and soon, the room devolves into squabbling and yelling, everyone’s words mixing together into one, giant mess. it hurts, and you want out of there, but you’re afraid moving will draw their attention onto you.

covering your ears and squeezing your eyes closed, you pray for someone to help you.

“what is the meaning of this?” lucifer booms, his voice cutting over everyone else’s. you wince and squeeze your palms tighter against your head. you lose track of what’s going on for a moment, the voices in your head pleading for it to stop drowning out everything else. your breath is shallow, and you know you need to calm down, but you just can’t.

LUCIFER:

“excuse me,” you say, almost inaudibly, rising to your feet. pushing your way out of the room, you just follow your feet, not even knowing where you’re going.

you end up somewhere you always feel safe- lucifer’s study. his cloak is draped over the back of his seat, and you don;t even hesitate to place yourself in his chair, throwing it over you.

you’re far enough from the living room to not be able to hear the yelling, thankfully, so you just try to calm yourself, practicing the breathing methods you know. time passes, and while you can hear the tick-tocking of the grandfather clock, you’re not registering how much time actually passes.

“mc, there you are.” lucifer’s voice reaches your ears, and you sti up slightly, open your eyes.

“hey.”

“hey,” he says quietly, temper all but gone, worry replacing it. distantly, you feel bad for making him worry. “how are you feeling?”

“better,” you say, and he nods.

“that’s good. do you need anything?”

“a hug?” you’re half joking, but he surprises you by striding forward, carefully leaning over you and wrapping his arms around you. you lean into it, not one to pass by such a rare experience, moving slightly so you can better hold onto him. “sorry for freaking out.”

“don’t apologize,” he instructs gently, brushing his hand over your cheek. “i can understand getting overwhelmed due to this house. i get overwhelmed sometimes and i run the place.”

“really?” you hadn’t expected that. he always seems to put together and in control.

“yes, really.” a moment passes. “i’m… glad i found you in here. i’m glad you came to my office.”

“it’s safe,” you murmer, and he stills slightly.

“that makes me happy. i hope i and my space continues to be such for you. not that i want to you be in a situation where you need a safe space, but if the need arises, i’d rather have you somewhere i know is safe as well. is that selfish of me?”

“i don’t know,” you hum. “but i don’t really care. thank you for being my safe space.”

“of course, my love. of course.”

BELPHIE:

“what is the meaning of this?” lucifer booms, his voice cutting over everyone else’s. you wince and squeeze your palms tighter against your head. you lose track of what’s going on for a moment, the voices in your head pleading for it to stop drowning out everything else. your breath is shallow, and you know you need to calm down, but you just can’t.

“mc?” someone asks, stepping forward. you flinch, and barely a second passes before you feel a powerful surge of magic go through you, though it doesn’t do anything.

the brothers aren’t so lucky. the magic, which you identify as belphie’s has put them all to sleep, save for belphie, who’s still staring at you with wide eyes.

“what did you do?” you whisper and he looks around, as if only now realizing what he’s done.

“i just reacted instinctively,” he explains. “they’re not hurt, just asleep, and they’ll be alright in a few hours.”

“but why?”

“you flinched,” says belphie as if that explains anything. “and i- i just did it. let loose my power without thinking.”

your laugh has a hysterical edge to it. “well at least they’re not hurt.”

“who cares about them,” belphie suddenly bursts. “are you okay?”

all of your overwhelmed feelings come back to you at once, making you physically curl in on yourself, if only slightly. “i don’t. i’m not.” you flounder for words. “it was too loud.”

“the noise?” belphie repeats and you nod.

“i’m not great at situations like that.”

“i’m sorry,” he says falteringly. “then it’s my fault you were hurting. are hurting.”

“no-”

“yeah,” bephie insists, resigned. “it is. i started the fight, putting you in an environment that would hurt you.”

“you didn’t know,” you murmer, but he skaes his head.

“i shouldn’t have had to know.”

it’s quiet for a moment.

“is there anything you need?” belphie steps over satan, who’s slumped on the floor. “anything i can do to make it better?”

“i don’t know. i’m better, now,” you say, but he doesn’t seem appeased. “i’m just a little wrung out.”

“understandable,” belphie says. “just- let me know.”

“i will,” you promise. “but really, you being here, and it being quiet it already helping.”

“if you’re sure,” belphie agrees dubiously. “i can sit with you, if you’d like. we can go somewhere else so they’re-” he gestures to the rest of the brothers, “-not in the way.”

“that sounds nice.” you offer belphie your arm and he helps you up, hand lingering just a moment longer than it normally would. you don’t mind, though. the contact and warmth is nice, and he seems to get that, it the way he wraps his hand around your upper arm is any indication.
