I had managed to hit the exact perfect setting on our dumb-ass upstairs thermostat to keep it within a few degrees of 70 for an entire-ass week, and then downstairs decided to adjust their thermostat by 5 degrees (which, fair, they had it at 65 before and it was a little chilly down there) but now it's thrown the upstairs one off (because the upstairs thermostat only senses the temperature from downstairs, not upstairs where it's affecting the temps) and I've been trying to find the perfect setting again but so far it's either swinging up to 80 when I'm trying to go to bed or dropping down to 60 when I'm trying to get up (or work on my paper, which I'm not very motivated to do when I'm cold).
Ideally we would just get some sort of remote sensor in one of the two rooms being affected and be able to set the thermostat at the temperature that we want rather than some random number, but I'm not sure how many more things I should be pointing out to the landlady when I've not even been here half a year lol
#she's already replaced my light fixture and given me caulk to fix up the room#and will be doing something tomorrow to further block smoke smell from getting into my room#both the thermostat and the bathroom fan are problems#and the downstairs thermostat is saying something about a communication error?#...maybe I should bring my thermometer down to see if that thermostat is accurate#also at least one of the buttons on the microwave does not work so that's fun

the one advantage to renting is when your landlord/property management company has to spot the cost for repairs. but oh BOY do they love avoiding responsibility for them sometimes.
#the property manager was like ‘if its the thermostat or batteries that fee is on you guys’#well i can see how little faith u have in us but i know for a fact we have been running the same schedule all summer with no problem#and no one has changed the batteries bc it has yet to need new ones? as far as i know?#like the display still works. so. i can only assume its fine#jordan talks#and that one time when they were like ‘did yall saw this square hole in the bathroom ceiling’#like why the fuck would we do that. and also how. its been there for years#i always assumed it was a mistake on the builders part lmfao

HVAC Repair: The Ultimate Guide to Keeping Your System Running Efficiently
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are essential for maintaining indoor comfort in homes and commercial spaces. A properly functioning HVAC system regulates temperature, improves air quality, and ensures energy efficiency. However, like any mechanical system, HVAC units can develop issues over time.
Timely HVAC repairs are crucial to preventing costly breakdowns and extending the system’s lifespan. Ignoring minor issues can lead to major failures, skyrocketing energy bills, and even health hazards due to poor air quality. In this guide, we’ll explore common HVAC problems, troubleshooting tips, professional repair costs, and maintenance best practices.
2. Understanding HVAC Systems
Components of an HVAC System
An HVAC system comprises several key components that work together to regulate indoor temperature and air quality:
Thermostat: Controls the temperature settings and signals the system to heat or cool as needed.
Furnace: Heats the air during cold seasons.
Air Conditioner: Cools and dehumidifies the air.
Ductwork: Channels heated or cooled air throughout the building.
Vents and Registers: Distribute air evenly across rooms.
Air Filters: Remove dust, pollen, and other contaminants from the air.
How HVAC Systems Work
An HVAC system operates by cycling air through heating and cooling components before distributing it through ductwork and vents. The thermostat acts as the control center, signaling the system when adjustments are needed. Proper maintenance ensures smooth operation, but wear and tear over time can lead to malfunctions.
3. Signs Your HVAC System Needs Repair
Knowing the warning signs of HVAC problems can help you address issues before they become costly. Here are some common indicators:
Unusual Noises
Banging, clanking, or screeching noises can indicate loose or broken components.
Hissing sounds may suggest refrigerant leaks.
Clicking sounds might signal electrical issues.
Weak Airflow
Clogged air filters, duct obstructions, or a failing blower motor can reduce airflow.
Inconsistent airflow between rooms could indicate ductwork problems.
Strange Odors
Musty smells suggest mold or mildew in ducts.
Burning odors may indicate an overheating component or electrical issues.
Inconsistent Temperatures
If some rooms are too hot while others are too cold, the HVAC system may need recalibration.
A failing thermostat or blocked vents can cause temperature imbalances.
4. Common HVAC Problems and Their Causes
Dirty or Clogged Filters
Clogged filters restrict airflow, causing the system to work harder.
Regularly changing filters improves efficiency and air quality.
Thermostat Issues
Incorrect settings or faulty sensors can prevent the system from functioning properly.
Upgrading to a smart thermostat can enhance performance.
Refrigerant Leaks
Low refrigerant levels can cause the AC to blow warm air.
Leaks require professional repair and recharging.
Electrical and Wiring Problems
Faulty wiring can lead to system failures or fire hazards.
Regular inspections help prevent electrical malfunctions.
Frozen Evaporator Coils
Dirty coils or low refrigerant levels can cause ice buildup.
Turning off the unit and allowing it to thaw before calling a technician can prevent further damage.
5. DIY HVAC Troubleshooting Tips
Before calling an HVAC technician, you can perform some basic troubleshooting steps to identify minor issues:
Checking and Replacing Air Filters
Dirty filters are the most common cause of HVAC inefficiency.
Replace filters every 1-3 months for optimal performance.
Inspecting Thermostat Settings
Ensure the thermostat is set to the correct temperature mode.
If the thermostat is battery-operated, replace the batteries.
Cleaning Vents and Ducts
Dust buildup in vents can obstruct airflow.
Vacuum vents and consider professional duct cleaning if airflow remains weak.
Resetting Circuit Breakers
If the HVAC system won’t turn on, check the circuit breaker.
Resetting the breaker may restore power if there’s been an overload.

I am going to go mad if I have to wrestle with this thermostat all winter, I moved the lever thing maybe a millimeter because it was 68 and dropping inside, and then it shot up and even though I've inched the lever back a millimeter, it keeps going up and I am going to roast.
#pretty sure half of the problem is the first-floor thermostat not being on yet#'cause it's cold down there#do not understand it

Had a really rough night last night, my radiators did that thing they USED to do but haven't done in a long while where they will go overdrive at like 2-3am and you start overheating under the covers. Mind you, my bedroom is in the coldest, draughtiest room in the house, so when it does that it becomes a tad too cold to be out of the covers, but far too hot to be under them. So you're left slapping them back and forth while half asleep for god knows how long until the draught takes over the room again. 🫠
Anyway not a lot of good sleeping was had last night. 🥲
#i do have a space heater for when it's too cold#the problem is that the thermostat is in the living room which has better windows#on top of my room having draughty windows I also have a window ac that isn't sealed well but I usually just put up with it#but the space heater has helped a lot this year#especially last night with the gale force winds- the chill was awful in here#anyway....don't rent bits of an old ass house kids!! the landlords will never do right by it nor you!
