The tarp of life. The respiratory diaphragm.

In addition to being your prime mover of respiration, the diaphragm is integral to multiple structures that keep you upright, moving, digesting, circulating, pumping lymph, and more. The diaphragm has attachments or connections to virtually every tissue in your body. And because its function is to fill and empty your lungs with life-supplying oxygen, the diaphragm muscle has a blast radius that impacts every cell in the body.

This blast radius means that body parts near and far to the diaphragm absorb the constant up and down oscillations of this muscle, and all of it is consequential. It also means that descriptions of its anatomy immediately spiral into the functional discourse of everything it touches.

Your diaphragm is the “heart” of your respiratory system. The parachute shape of the diaphragm isn’t symmetrical—it rises higher on the right to accommodate your liver and then swerves around to your spine. It has two tail-like tendrils, called crura, coming out of the back of it. The crura also make the diaphragm resemble a jellyfish, the most beautiful sea creature.

Whether you prefer to envision it as a parachute, a misshapen dome, or an irregular mushroom cap, the diaphragm serves as a partition dividing your lungs and heart from your other organs. Anatomist @gilhedley playfully describes the diaphragm as a “stocking cap” on top of the “abdominal sac.” I like to think of it as a hoodie for your viscera, a mattress for your heart, and a sofa for your lungs.

A little self myofascial release for you all on this wonderful, rainy Wednesday. I've dealt with a bunch of anterior hip tightness and some pain in my R hip.
