Fine! Since absolutely no one asked — here’s my take on Sabrina Carpenter’s latest announcement as someone who was neutral about her previously.

TL;DR: it’s satire, it’s punk as fuck, and I love it. Now get ready, because I’m about to sound really fucking intellectual here.

The album is called Man’s Best Friend, a metaphor usually used for dogs. Sabrina Carpenter puts herself into the position of one on this album cover: on all fours on the floor, having her head pet. It’s reminiscent of a sexual activity known as pet play or doggy play. Needless to say, I think this is deliberate. Sex is always a good way to ruffle some feathers.

If you’ve listened to Manchild, her latest single, it’s basically her insinuating that a lot of men are idiots and incapable of keeping their lives together without women.

Sabrina Carpenter likes to play with vintage and Americana aesthetics, both of which are reminiscent of a more sexist, more misogynist time. And by ‘play’ I mean she subverts them. I think this is another instance of her taking something very familiar (and in this case, provocative) and subverting it — but not in the lazy, boring way (which would be ‘consensual kink’ — which, you can still interpret it that way, but I would go a step further).

I think Man’s Best Friend, and its cover, are about how men are incompetent and need women to assist them like service dogs. They know this, and they are so scared of being without a woman to take care of them that they force women into submission, into their ownership, to the point where they make the women believe they are doing this voluntarily. So a man’s best friend is not his dog, it’s women — and men would do good to remember that. The layers you can apply to this are insane, and I FUCKING LOVE IT for that! Edit: But most importantly — it’s a great way to start a conversation about some things that unfortunately still exist in our society and that we should really have some conversations about.

Also. On a meta level, the fact that she is doing that, putting herself into that position? She isn’t catering to men, she is actively taking their expectations, turning them around, and throwing them right back at them. She is owning her sexuality, adding yet another layer to this hell of a power move.

And yeah. Maybe this is me reading too much into everything (which is something I like to do). But honestly? I don’t care. I think this is fun, I think this is the best thing I’ve seen come out of pop since I can’t even tell you, I think it doesn’t matter if I’m right or not ‘cause I’m gonna appreciate this regardless, I think this is complex or can at least be interpreted in a complex way, I think it ultimately doesn’t matter which interpretation is ‘correct’ because it’s powerful either way, and yes, once again, I FUCKING LOVE IT!!

Bonus points because this is so punk that it pissed off the extremist babies on all possible sides, and I’m kinda here for that.

I don't think you understand how Italian is the "Stai bene? (Are you well?)" from Lawrence and Tedesco answering "Mah, no one is ever well at our age". I'll try to explain, it's like an italian thing, especially if you're from the South. That if somebody pays you a compliment or hints at things going well for you, you downplay it because by complimenting you they're "cursing" you. It's a folkloristic thing, the kind of thing that my grandmother would say to me: beware of people complimenting you and be careful not to share the good things going on with you, because the moment you do people might "curse" you. Very difficult to put this thing into words, but Goffredo Tedesco I see you. I see you a Patriarch of Venice on the road to papacy and still believing in grandmother's (pagan) superstitions because that's how religion, especially for old people, works in Italy. Again, difficult to put into words, but I know in my heart that he is answering Lawrence's question the same way my grandmother would answer it. I see you outrunning malocchio, Cardinal Tedesco. And I respect it.

Aborted by inducing her own miscarriage around three months after the crash. While Edwin’s more than a bit stand-offish and definitely not the most tactful, I never did get the sense that he doesn’t like people - in fact, I think his insistence that he’s “not good with people” and his general emotional detachment/disinterest has a lot more to do with his assumption that they don’t or won’t like him.

And while that’s very sad to think about… it’s not as if his belief here is hard to understand, considering his past experiences. But it’s left him quite guarded and lonely, and of course, the more he isolates himself from people other than Charles (and even here, he allows himself little vulnerability), the more he reinforces this fear that people won’t like him, and the less he allows himself to properly sympathize or empathize with others, which is why his friendships with Crystal and Niko and Monty (short-lived as that was) are so important. Once he started to let some of those walls down, to not be so scared of vulnerability and to be around people who allow themselves to feel and want so readily (to live! who allow themselves to live without fear of loving!), he’s really not nearly as bad with people as he seems to think he is - and, in fact, he’s actually quite good at saying or doing the right thing for them when it really counts.

Really leaning into the theory that Callum won't use dark magic in s7. Yes, they have set the stakes high and made the perfect set up for dark magic to be used again, BUT, those same stakes still remain if he doesn't succumb to them and instead chooses to not, to find another way which isn't dark magic. Especially since there is a theme in the show of dark magic being the second option, the only option, the creative solution, basically the easy way out.

I want Callum to see that he can do things the hard way. To affirm his beliefs that dark magic isn't necessary. I want him to discover a connection to the Moon Arcanum, (which is tied to illusions and truth ect ect) without using dark magic for a third time. Because he is the 'destiny is a book you write yourself' guy.
