It’s pitch black and I’m scaling a railway bridge somewhere outside Birmingham. True, it’s a strange vantage point from which to view Queen, but then I’m lost on the site of the National Exhibition Centre, Queen are due on stage at any moment and this seems like the quickest route to the massed, muted roarings I can hear in the distance.

Of course, it isn’t. I set off in the wrong direction, spend days plodding past vast, blank buildings and arrive, miraculously, only a few minutes into the act. And in the event, it doesn’t much matter; I’m in time for the community singing.

It’s wonderful in its way: there’s a great gasp of joy at the first faint notes of each number and then everyone starts singing, faithfully following all Freddie’s inflections. In face some of the numbers are almost entirely sung by the audience with our Fred (fashion note: he’s modeling red leather trousers, blue knee pads and bare torso) conducting.

“I don’t think they need me, actually,” he confides to Brian May at one point. Actually, he’s right; Fred’s only there as a symbol of himself.

For of course the venue is too enormous for any kind of experimentation (and Queen aren’t disposed towards it anyway); personality is dwarfed and success depends on exaggeration and recognition. The stage is huge and between the heads all you can see is four diminutive, two-dimensional figures and a large heap of gleaming gold drums.

The audience wants Queen’s greatest hits paraded; Queen graciously grant their request and everyone goes home happy if not stimulated or on the verge of new vistas.

The noise is quite pleasant, if rather pompous; Freddie sings nicely and doesn’t screech, the guitars are soothing and there’s a git of soggy punch from the percussion. The sound is a mock rock-mock classical pastiche and musical in the sense that it aims at beauty even if it falls far short of art.

Then we get the obligatory naughty and/or skillful tits: after all this is a “rock” show.

The awful “Fat Bottomed Girls” is dedicated with juvenile relish to “anyone in the audience with great big tits and a great big arse.” Fred ought to be ashamed of himself ; most thirdformers have a better line in chat than that.

Then there’s the bit in the middle where everyone shows what misunderstood prodigies they are: Brian May plays some pretty guitar, Roger Taylor hammers furiously at his kettle drums like a DIY fiend thwarted by the non-cooperation of a particularly obstinate nail; and finally we have that inane epic “Bohemian Rhapsody” with full effects of smoke, lightening, large gone, and the lilting tones of the promising young tenor who’s standing directly behind me.

After a suitably impressive pause, which is filled with clapping and cheering, Queen reappear for “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” go off (whistling, stamping, chanting), and come back on again. Only this time Fredis’ perched a little precariously on the shoulders of Superman.

Yes, I’m afraid so and no, I kid you not; the incredible hulk is clad in the customary red and blue costume (cape, underpants worn on top of the trousers etc) and there sits Fred, biker’s cap firmly crammed on his head leading the massed choirs through a rendering of “We Will Rock You.”

It’s all rather incongruous really.

Then after a final chorus of “We Are The Champions” that sounds like something stirring from The Sound Of Music, it’s all over bar the national anthem (and that, I suspect, is a pious hope for the preservation of the group rather than the monarch).

Can we glean from this performance on how to cope with the pressures of success and superstardom? It’s easy: relax, get hip, lie back and learn how to love yourself.
